I'll shamelessly say it; Mark Waid's re-interpretation of Daredevil was one of the best moves Marvel's (fairly) recently made. Bringing back Murdock to his charming, swashbuckling, quick-wit roots was a welcome return from his dark, depressive (though still exceptional) days under Bendis, Brubaker, and (I suppose) Diggle's pen. So, are there any Marvel characters you want to see a return to form to? A "rebooted" personality, if you will? Below, I've given a few examples of some characters very desperately needing to come back with style.
Cyclops
Let's not mince words, here. Scott Summers is a real hero, who, as of years of late, has become somewhat of a complete douchebag for the sake of his ideology. I give props to the character for being one of the few to stick to his guns about where he stands, but Cyclops used to be fairly iconic. He's now thrown into "leadership" positions to pose the bad guy. Cyclops has been through an awful lot in his career, but he was trusted as Xavier's right hand man for a reason: good moral judgement, values, and an ability to fight the good fight. It would be great to see Scott revert back to the man that was, instead of constantly trying to beat back lost causes with his bare fists.
The Hulk Until
The Avengers, I was never a fan of the Hulk. I'd seen both movies, previously, and didn't give too much thought to the character himself. What I liked about what Whedon did with him, that the comics seem to be lacking, is that he made the character
fun. And while I know Banner has never been the happy-go-lucky character with a chip on his shoulder, his brooding and basic...uninterestingness calls for a change! Let Banner be brilliant and let his adventures
utilize the Hulk; he isn't getting rid of the demon anytime soon.
Magneto I'll be the first to preach recent ignorance on this one; I've not been keeping a close eye on Magneto. Last I heard, he was a good guy? That, in and of itself, threw me. I'm all for radical character development, but I'm not sure how I see complete change in arguably the greatest comic villain of all time. I'd like to see Magneto get back to the basics, find his evil again, and wreak the havoc of a thousand worlds back on the X-Men. A strong, motivated, and developed villain, maybe I'm just not ready to let him grow up.
Nick Fury He had quite the leave of absence for a while, and I want him back with a, pardon the pun, Fury. Nick Fury was a prize-fighting, military champ who got his hands good and dirty without ever needing to. When he's been around, he's been the behind-the-scenes fellow, barking orders instead of kicking ass. Give me back field operative Nick Fury!
Floor's open, boys and girls. Who deserves a personality reboot? Do any? Play nice.
