Laeta Kalogridis to adapt Ghost in the Shell movie

DreamWorks has hired writer Laeta Kalogridis ("Birds of Prey") to adapt the Japanese manga franchise, "Ghost in the Shell," into 3D live-action.

Marvel comics legend, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment originally brought the project to DreamWorks, and are now set to produce the futuristic detective thriller. Ghost in the Shell's story follows the exploits of a female cyborg who works for the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, a unit that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Originally created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. To date, it now has two more manga editions, three anime film adaptations and two anime TV series. DreamWorks already has some experience with the franchise as the second anime film, "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.

Jamie Moss was the original writer but it eventually shifted to Kalogridis who has also written and produced Martin Scorsese's upcoming thriller "Shutter Island," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

no No NOOOOOOO! Didn't they learn their lesson with Dragonball?!?
MultiPurposePoni - 10/23/2009, 12:55 AM
Lol @ SUPAH!! ; D

MUTLI @ DRAGON BALLZ was a shite kiddy cartoon, GHOST is a Animated Manga masterpiece dude!! You never seen it???
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 1:13 AM
@LEEE: Of course! I own 2 of the movies and 2 of the TPBs. C'mon man, if they couldn't do a decent job with DB (simplicity factor: 3/10), how do you think they could do justice to GITS (simplicity factor: 8/10)? Mainstream comics are hard enough to translate, studios shouldn't even touch manga yet.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/23/2009, 1:19 AM
Birds of Prey? god help us.

i have only seen the first movie. good thing too. because the rest of the shows and movies suck.

grif - 10/23/2009, 4:39 AM
I really hope this works out .

@Multi the problem with Dragon Ball wasnt the simplicity of the story but the fantasy and sci fi elements. If they had done it CGI like Astro Boy it would have worked.
GITS is more sci fi oriented 'like' the Matrix so it wont be hard to pull of technically. My only fear is finding a suitable story to tell.
breakUbatman - 10/23/2009, 4:55 AM
i hope its based off the first movie and not the crap ass series. but this a bad idea
CorndogBurglar - 10/23/2009, 5:16 AM
GITS @ lol! : D

I don't see a major problem here, base it off the first movie, its like WATCHMEN, SIN CITY you cant mess with it too much, if they keep to source with this one it'll be [frick]ing fantastic!! DRAGON BALLZ sucked becoz it was a crap piece of sh!Te, nothing more!! ; D

Its like say don't make any more Comic book movies because BATMAN & ROBIN sucked?!?

BREAK @ Good call!!
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 6:21 AM
lol GITS :p

Well who knows really just dont let them touch Ninja Scroll :(
teabag - 10/23/2009, 6:29 AM
I used to be into Anime, but it was always a toss up if it was any good.

Blood, Ghost in Shell, Ninja Scroll, Violence jack, Fist of Northstar, 8 Man After were good.

Problem was I saw Akira first, and everything else does not compare.

SkunkApe1 - 10/23/2009, 6:37 AM

NATASSIA MATHE would make an excellent GHOST i reckon!!
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 6:43 AM
Yeah NINJA SCROLLS, is the nuts!!

Hey im sure NINJA SCROLLS in floating around HOLLYWOOD @ TEA!?

SKUNK @ And AKIRA!! Though that will have to be really careful if they ever get to make that one, though thats been floating around for 15 to 20 years i think lol.

LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 6:46 AM
@ breakUbatman: I agree that DBE would have been better as CGI. Anyway, what's done is done. I'd rather they don't try it again.

As for Ghost in the Shell, that could be great. I agree with LEEE777. They should base it off the first movie.
BmanHall - 10/23/2009, 6:51 AM
LEEE@ NATASSIA MATHE would make an excellent addition to my body..:D
teabag - 10/23/2009, 7:04 AM
Heh heh heh @ TEA!!! ; D

BMAN @ Ive actually heard FOX wants to start all over again an reboot DRAGONBALLZ already lol!!

BMAN @ Yeah the first movie would be so sweet!!

On a very good note, this is DREAMWORKS not FOX!! Though im sure FOX will do better after their last MANGA attempt with COWBOY BEBOP?? Hopefully lol!!
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 7:38 AM
wow...LEEE... you have a wide range of movie and comics likes! I have never heard of this either. with all this new stuff & things not yet made but ready for the taking why then all this other talk of reboot this...reboot that? There is so much new material just waiting to happen. Course i have never heard of this... and I did not like that chung li movie... gg

Bandrews1 - 10/23/2009, 8:11 AM
tea.... i have some "fixing" to do with you!!! lol... btw where is your tea bag we have all come to know so well? its just not the same without it or your flag!

do you also like the anime and manga? Its not something appealing to me too much.
KeepItReal - 10/23/2009, 8:16 AM
KEEP @ Yeah this is a classic in MANGA, i get your point, all this reboot sh!T is all HOLLYWOOD does, once something makes money everybody else jumps in, like BATMAN great reboot, but most of the other reboots just suck lol.

They should just try and make great sequels and top the originals!

Bandrews @ Me too man!!

TEA @ Is TEABAG free lol! He's always changing KEEP!

One day he might even have a AVATAR like this =

DEFENDERS style!! ; D

LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 8:43 AM
OK, so question: If they manage to not F this up, what anime/manga do you guys want to see get the same treatment?

In the Sci-Fi realm I really would like to see Silent Mobius.

Aside from that if they are going to do more kiddie stuff it would be nice if they tried some of the anime/manga with a more female fanbase (Saint Tail! or Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne come to mind or even resurrecting Card Captor but I'm sure with more coffee I can come up with a better example)

I could even see some decent live comedies of some of the "harem" style comics, just a thought!
ComicChic - 10/23/2009, 8:58 AM
KIR@ Im not a big fan of Manga but there are some things i like.......as for the Avatar , for you il go back to the flag for a while. :P

LEEE@ lmao.....very cool Defenders pic :P

DRAGONBALL SUCKED BALLS.STREETFIGHTER SUCKED HADOKENS..PALE COMPARISONS AND SHAMES TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM
GUNSMITH - 10/23/2009, 9:39 AM
Gunsmith@ very true :)
teabag - 10/23/2009, 9:42 AM
ComicChic @ I would really like SILENT MOBIUS too, good call! I'd also love a new GUYVER feature as well, what they can do with special effects now, the movie would be amazing!!

GUNSMITH @ Most Western comic books are that too, its sad but overall true!!

KEEP @ Talking new AVATARS, you've got a new one lol! And did you sort out your Photobucket???

TEA @ Welcome back buddy, i think thats gotta be your official trademark AVATAR from now on lol!! ; D

LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 10:13 AM
GUNSMITH only hates anime because deep down he knows anime and manga are better. I on the other hand love marvil and DC and manga and anime. As long as it has a good story and plot.
luffycapri - 10/23/2009, 10:14 AM
LUFFY @ Lol!

Hey man, i miss ya YOU TUBE thing you had going on!

Your not you, without it!! : D
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 10:16 AM
no, lol if i post any videos you may spray me with that anti luffy pray
luffycapri - 10/23/2009, 10:18 AM
@ ComicChic: That's a good question. I don't really have one I would like to see that is related to Ghost in the Shell. If the Cowboy Bebop movie does well I would like to see Samurai Champloo. But if I had to pick one anime to be a live action movie, hands down, it would have to be Vampire Hunter D.
BmanHall - 10/23/2009, 10:44 AM
LEEE@ yeah it may have to stay lol
teabag - 10/23/2009, 10:51 AM
TEA @ Lol! ; D

Hey TINY PIC is suppose to be a good one? Not used it myself though.
LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 11:47 AM
KIR@ i dont see it sorry :(
teabag - 10/23/2009, 11:47 AM
sorry guys...she was pretty too. =( how do use this site?
KeepItReal - 10/23/2009, 12:11 PM
I think Ghost in the Shell could be pulled of nicely. It's definitely got a more complex story that DBZ but effects-wise, I don't think it would be as daunting.

I'd be for a story from the movie OR the series.

I loved the Laughing Man. :)
Runefyst - 10/23/2009, 12:25 PM
have faith in such a huge film, but even tho i never really watched any of it i still am interested. the only way we'll know is if shutter island is good. chris nolan shud do this film, and not spielberg. he sucks nowadays. look at indy 4 and transformers 2...
kyle dalton - 10/23/2009, 2:42 PM
I must be the only one who thought the "Ghost in the Shell" film was boring. A few good scenes and it looked great but it was a snooze. I haven't seen the series so maybe there might be something there but if this is supposed to be a remake of the '95 anime flick - then boring.

@LEE777 - Now, I'd be down for that, Natassia Malthe needs to be used a lot more and get the [frick] away from Uwe Boll projects.

I'd leave the live action adaptations of anime and manga to the Japanese. Because they get it, Hollywood doesn't. If they were smart they would just financially back and partner up with Japanese firms and do adaptations properly. No more "Dragonball" bullshit and more "Shinobi: Heart Under Blade" stuff.

WeaponX - 10/23/2009, 2:58 PM

WeaponX @ Yeah man, im wiv you there buddy, NATASSIA MALTHE!! And very cool, i luv SHINOBI: HEART UNDER BLADE!

Your right the Japanese do make much better stuff, its a shame HOLLYWOOD don't wake up, an really look!

LEEE777 - 10/23/2009, 4:02 PM
Ghost in the Shell isn't hard to adapt at all. It's really nothing that hasn't been done before and the special effects aren't something that movie makers couldn't handle. Plus they've got Avi Arad, and he really knows his stuff. I mean c'mon, he gave us Spider-Man 2!

Hopefully they can make the dialogue a bit more exciting.

Because 7:14 - 7:24 in this video is pretty much Ghost in the Shell in a nutshell.

@Weapon X: They really don't. The Kaiji and Death Note movies were terrible.

Speed Racer and Astro (as well as Silent Hill and The Magnificent Seven) were all wonderful movies despite being American made.
MovieTheaterLad - 10/23/2009, 4:09 PM
In fact, they should let Conan O' Brien and Andy Richter do it.

MovieTheaterLad - 10/23/2009, 4:11 PM
If they do justice to this there are so many other great Anime series to make live action. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gunsmith Cats, Full Metal Panic, Cutey Honey and GUNDAM. Gundam would be awesome! I do realize there is already a Cutey Honey live action movie, but that was a piece of suck even by Japanese standards.
Number21 - 10/23/2009, 5:55 PM
if they have a good story and is related to the show/comic im ok with it
flames809 - 10/23/2009, 7:46 PM
@MovieTheaterLad - It's not to say the Japanese haven't made some stinkers but they hit more than they miss especially since they have nowhere near the budget Hollywood has to play with. They are the best for it because there is no cultural side stepping to be done. They understand their stuff far better than any foreign company that can hardly grasp their own pop culture properties let alone another countries.

WeaponX - 10/23/2009, 10:47 PM
Dreamworks? As in 'Shrek' Dreamworks? Not good.
BryEL - 10/23/2009, 11:22 PM
I love this anime, so i really want to see a faithful adaption for the movie.
shibazz - 10/24/2009, 3:09 PM
gits was the shiz when i first seen it and it only gets better. but i wish they would make a movie (animated or real) of blue seed
