The Truth About the Silver Surfer Spin-Off Rumors

Writer J. Michael Straczynski clarifies his remarks about the Silver Surfer movie project.

Many online movie news sites took screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski's recent statements about Fantastic Four movies to mean that the Silver Surfer project was dead. Well, today Straczynski clarified his statements about Silver Surfer, saying that Fox's proposed spin-off is still very much alive and in active development:

Guys…guys…GUYS…whoa, slow down, back the bus up a second.

When I was asked about the Silver Surfer script, I responded about the one I’d written around the time that FF2 was launched, and was designed to pick up where that one left off.

When FF2 didn’t do as well as hoped for, that script was set aside, but that has NOTHING to do with the Silver Surfer script that is NOW under development at Fox with other folks. As far as I know, that is proceeding apace. So the hysteria that’s gripped the nets about “ohmygod the Surfer movie is dead!” is not correct, as I was again referring to only that one specific script tied into FF2, NOT what’s being done now.

	Dude, you liked both Fantastic Four movies, AND Ghost Rider. Don't even try to tell me what sht is. I don't even like Origins that much. I recognize that it's a really bad CBM, and a bad movie in general. However, I enjoyed the action and performances, and that kept me entertained. 	Lee: I've always said that Origins entertained me. I never said it was a good movie. I have said that the performances and action were good, and what did I say in my comment? The movie was bad, but entertained me, and had good performances and action. So if they say it, they must be telling the truth! Of course they're not going to say "We're bringing back the same thing everyone hated and laughed at." They're playing to the crowd, simple as that. How are you so immediately hailing this movie as amazing, yet you know Fox's track record? So after you famously declare your hatred of Origins, you're more than willing to jump back into Fox's greedy hands? It is the exact same thing with Magneto, only it makes even less sense, considering it is another X-origin film. 	Tyler--- What I'm saying is that fox brought in some serious coin with their movies, not paying much attention to the source. Then they started seeing how much cash films that like Iron Man and TDK took in and started to listen to what the fans actually wanted. Hence talk of FF reboots, Silver Surfer movies not connected to FF and so on. They are going to get it right pretty soon. 	aaaahhh distancing themselves from FF2, huh? very wise. Very strategic. I would say this is positive news in many respects @ Spilox: The very best Silver Surfer stories are to be found in his original solo run, and in his appearances in FF over the years. There is a very good edition of Essentials if you can handle the black and white and there are reprints and trade paperbacks available. 	Hawks: Then why was Origins so far off from the source? It came out after TDK and Iron Man, yet it was obvious Fox hadn't learned from them. They COULD get them right with the reboots, etc., but it isn't a sure-fire fact. 	I agree Hawks@! Fox execs are trying to fix what their individual movie-makers have done with Marvel properties because they have lost a pile of money on the movies that were not done right. They're trying to make them more like Marvel has done with Iron Man and DC with Dark Knight. FOX has made a lot of very good movies through the years, many of them Oscar winners so their studio is very well capable of making a good movie! If they look at what we the fans have been saying about staying more in line with the character's original characteristics and look at the movies done right, that made a ton of money, they can begin to make movies that are true to the characters and get more peole in the theater seats! I think they are starting to learn what is good in a CBM from Marvel and some from DC and are getting their crap together! 	ANIL: I doubt it...Fox must have noticed the success of Iron Man that stuck closely to the comics whilst still taking some of the best bits of Iron Man and putting them into the story and setting up future movies at the same time. A year later they make Wolverine...ruin Deadpool, make it nearly impossible to include Gambit in future X-Men movies and wipe Logans memory with a magic bullet because their script was messy and nonsensical. 	DDD---Exactly. Like I said, they made loads of money off of the CBM's from Joe Blow general public. These veiwers know the name of the hero they are watching but nothing else,therefore they think its a great action flik. Then Iron Man and TDK came out and those movies raked it in from not only the general viewing audience, but us comic geeks who had to see them over and over.Fox is starting to see as much as they made, they left alot on the table as far as bringing in money. Tyler----If you look at Origins you'll see most of the characters fans have been screaming for for years (Deadpool, Gambit) but they still missed most of the continuity. It still made assloads of cash. Now even though it made money, we get these tidbits here and there from Jackman and Reynolds that they were a little dissapointed the characters strayed so far from the source. They are constantly putting out feelers. They will get their act together I'm sure of it. Maybe not the next movie, but soon they will realize all they have to do is pick up the comics and stick to the source as far as personal character and history goes. 	LEE: Damn, I thought you had a PS3? If you did/do I'd recommend InFamous, Killzone 2 and most definitely Uncharted 2! (they're all PS3 exclusives) As for non exclusives I'd recommend Fallout 3, Modern Warfare 2, Prince of Persia and Mirrors Edge. I got caught up in all the hype surrounding Haze before it was released...I've never been more disappointed in a game, lol! I hope you didnt pay too much for it because I wasnt a fan - it was decent but nowhere near as good as they made out it would be (in fact it got so many bad reviews, sales and fan response the company that made it ended up closing down afterwards!!) 	Yeah, lets see what they do with it. Im not going to dismiss it just because its Fox. I think sometimes people don't get that Fox is just a studio..they don't actually make the movies..they hire screen writers and directors to make the, they just produce them. They may interfere a bit, but thats only because they seem to have a team of writers they can control, and hire directors that don't have the balls to stop them sticking their oar in. Pray for a director worth his salt..and don't worry so much about the damn studio! Anyway, Fox produced Star Wars! 	I have both PS3 and X-Box. Here are my recommendations to you X-Box players: 1. Mass Effect 2. Left 4 Dead 3. Fallout 3 (it's way better on X-Box than PS3) BTW, my gamertag is TheDURDENarmy if anyone wants to add me :) Oh yeah, I just watched my Blu-Ray copy of Trek yesterday. And guess what? 	TYLER: That makes sense - the game froze a LOT on PS3! Especially nearer the end after I had all the DLC and the save file got bigger...it would freeze and slow down all the time! Still, I managed to get the platinum trophy on it and played it for 90+ hours so I wont be going back on it for a while, lol! mounted88: Yeah, I've just left the asshole a reply! :P I too was never into Star Trek but always loved Star Wars.
