A Theory on the Hulkbuster Armor Concept Art A Theory on the Hulkbuster Armor Concept Art

What is going on with The Hulk fighting Iron Man's Hulkbuster armor in the Avengers: Age of Ultron concept art? Here is a theory that explains it.

With the ABC special Assembling a Universe, nothing made waves as much as the concept art for Avengers: Age of Ultron—particularly the one featuring the Hulkbuster armor locking up with the big green giant himself.

Immediately, fans began to speculate about this sequence in the film and what it means. Two main theories have sprouted:

1) The Hulk is in the midst of a bout of destruction and it's up to Tony Stark's brand new armor to put a stop to him before he hurts anyone else.

2) Ultron has taken control over Stark's armor and the roles are reversed: Hulk is our hero and he's merely fighting off the enemy.

I, however, present to you an argument that neither of those are true and that things are much less exciting than they're made out to be.

Let's cut right to the chase. My theory is that this is merely a training sequence.

Tony Stark in the comics is no stranger to working with S.H.I.E.L.D. and although we may not be heading toward any kind of Civil War scenario, the movies have never shied away from casually referencing elements of different storylines in a much lesser capacity. Stark may very well have created the Hulkbuster armor for the government as a means to prepare for the worst case scenario.

Perhaps the Council we've seen in The Avengers are more worried about Hulk than anyone else and they'll only allow him on the team if they have a backup insurance plan set up just to be sure that if Banner loses control, they aren't screwed.

Why would Banner be up for this? Because after the events in New York, he's not only more trusting of Nick Fury, but he's also clearly gotten closer to Tony Stark and they've become friends, as evidenced by the post-credits sequence in Iron Man 3. Banner's struggled with his other side and understands fully that if things got out of hand, he would be dangerous. After all, he's tried committing suicide, remember? So why wouldn't he trust someone that stood by him in the darkest hour to set up a contingency plan to put him down if need be?

This could very well just be a sequence at the beginning of the movie to show that our core team has been interacting not only with each other, but with S.H.I.E.L.D., to advance their tools and be ready for anything else that might come their way. Ultron can even be an extension of that, with Stark trying to argue that himself in the Hulkbuster armor is more reliable than the alternative A.I.-driven program they've been developing with him.

The first two theories have about equal weight to them as anything else at this point, since it is all speculation, but I wouldn't rule out this merely being a simple scene of "let's test out the new toys and have some fun to start the movie off", working in a cameo that fans have been waiting for. If you think it will be a huge action set piece, you may be disappointed.

What do you guys think? Is it one of the first two theories, this one, or something entirely different? Leave a comment below!

Good article, interesting idea although seeing as it's rumoured to be towards the opening of the film, I really think it's as simple as a Hulk rampage in South Africa and Stark using the Hulkbuster for just the reason he made it. In the same way Batman sees the threat in Superman, Iron Man, although intrigued by Banner, clearly realises the potential threat the Hulk poses. So, he builds a suit that's capable of taking him down.

Interesting theory. With the set pics it does look like Hulk is on a rampage. I doubt they would do some training in the middle of downtown Johannesburg. However the Hulkbuster could still be an experimental armor for Stark and SHIELD.

Wowsers! I wouldn't be mad if this was the case.

I don't know what's up with this scene. If you look at the concept art of Hulk and Black Widow, it looks like they are in this same location, and Hulk is not antagonistic, this leads me to believe Iron Man is somehow the enemy.

I know the Avengers probably aren't SUPER concerned with property damage, but I don't see them really being okay destroying parts of a city just for practice.

@gamecreatorjj

It's hard for me to really judge that piece of concept art, since the Hulk in it is from concept art for the first Avengers movie. Black Widow may be as well, but I can't remember. Some versions of the bluray cover even used that Hulk art.

Or. . .

The Real Mandarin is in this and has taken over the mind of The Hulk.

Even though the second theory is really easy to assume, concept art is used (if I'm not mistaken) to capture and image and a specific idea to display the state of the scene in the film. So, long story short, this piece of concept art seems to give off the vibe that The Hulkbuster armor is the more menacing threat.

Then again, The Hulkbuster's sole purpose is to match The Hulk. It would be pretty weird for Ultron to just so conveniently take over the only thing that could match The Hulk. I guess it would work if the story meant to get more salt on the wound of Stark for having already created Ultron in the first place.

Anyway, nice theory.

I am not entirely sure that Shield will be a functioning agency by the time AoU roles around.

I think General Ross is using this. I think Tony made this before the events of TIH for Ross and maybe Ross doesn't like Hulk being a hero or he's playing a mind game with him to turn on the Avengers.

I think banner ran away from Stark in between IM3 and AAU and is hiding in south africa. When they're getting the team back together, Stark has to find Banner, who's reluctant to join again. Fight ensues.

wats funny is that I actually thought this as well, I thought either he was caught off guard and hulked out again or this could just be a training sequence, then the ultron idea started poppin up.

You know, this makes sense, or rather, it would probably BE exactly what's going on in the movie.... had it not been for the background in the concept art.

If it were a training simulation with Bruce, it would be taking place in the desert or an unpopulated area.

I know we're all excited here, but I'm not going to jump to conclusions just yet... the alternate opening animatic sequence for the Avengers made me a bit skeptical. Do I think we'll be seeing a Hulkbuster? Clearly, since it's actually in production and a scale model is being used for authenticity... but the circumstances are up in the air.

I want to see Wasp do what she does in the Ultimates. I think it's hilarious, and fans would riot and pick it apart, but it's hilarious how the Avengers go to great lengths to neutralize the Hulk, from dropping a tank on him, pounding him with Mjolnir (sounds wrong), deploying a sonic scrambler... and all Janet does is just fly inside his ear and sting his brain.

But I also think it's Ultron at work.

I thought of it being a training exercise but it seems like they would do it in another location if they wanted to do that and I'm much appier with it being an actual fight in the middle of the city. Even if it was a traininc Joss Whedon said that the movie would be more mature, I don't think that he's going tohave SHIELD let Hulk in the Avengers no matter what the situation is. That's incredibly unrealistic and it was enough to let Bruce Banner in the hellicarrier the first time around, let's not make it even more cartoonish. I don't think that the story will be about Tony gathering the Avengers. I think that a number of situations will lead to them going to eachother but it won't be as simple as that.

Now that I think about it this could still work except for the part with SHIELD. They could be in a holographic room like the Danger Room and Tony could be testing how he would act if this situation occured, the best way to fight Hulk and avoid damaging the place full of civilians. I'd still prefer if Hulk was on a rampage or the armor was taken over but it would be cool to see Tony trying to figure out how to protect the civilians. Plus it helps the character grow in a much more profound way than it has been done because he now realises the responsibility that he has in these situations. There would probably be a part in the climax of the movie with Tony trying to apply these techniques and telling everyone to make as little destruction as possible.

Could be a theory as to just a training sequence, but i think that it's Ultron that has taken over Stark's Hulkbuster armor and other armor suits and uses them all against The Avengers and even SHIELD.

Interesting theory.

It'll be a fun fight to watch for sure, but I hope it's written well. We saw Hulk lose control in Avengers, requiring one of his teammates to come in and stop him. We saw Iron Man lose control of his armor in Iron Man 3. This needs to feel like a fresh element of the story and not just an excuse for a cool fight scene.

Well it is a concept art, so it doesnt mean that this image will be depicted in the movie, just a test of how the clash would look like. So if it is Ultron controlled JARVIS or whatever why would the hulk bother hand locking with it instead of just trying to absolutlely destroy it. The grapple makes me believe Stark is trying to subdue him but not defeat him. Who knows, again only concept art.
