ISSUE ONE OF SIX
There was an eerie silence as Shaw and Lee stared fixated on the body bag that lay in front of them; the name tag which was alive to them, the body which was going to haunt them; Matt Marvin. In life he was an assassin, one of the best in the business. He was sure to be burning in hell; karma. “What a waste.” Shaw mumbled. “Made us thousands, tragic accident.” “Accident?” Lee replied with a slight tease in his crackly voice. “Oh, the conspiracy. You don’t believe in that crap do you?” asked Shaw quite rhetorically. He knew where Lee stood on this. Such a brilliant man at his job doesn't get shot under the circumstances that happened two days ago. “Comin’ outside for a smoke?” What choice did Lee have? Shaw was scruffy, rarely washed and always stunk of beer and tobacco.
The only warmth outside came from the cigar which dangled from Shaw’s mouth. The bright orange light which came with each puff shown down the alley. There was something off. Lee was uncomfortable, partly because the body of long-time associate Matt Marvin was laying just meters through the wall to his left. Shaw clicked on his lighter numerous times before gaining a good flame, only for light. "We won't be able to head back for another while, anyway." Lee wasn't dissapointed by this. As much as Lee hated this week, he found a sense of security in the cold. The icy air on his face, the sepia streetlamps with the grey night clouds above the taunting streets calling you in for a long walk to no destination. "Who'll fill the big boots left?" Shaw was eager for a successor to Matt, no one else at TRANCE was. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. How about 'Blo-" Lee was stopped by Shaw choking from his cigar's smoke. "We'll find someone." Shaw was fumbling on his already barely audible words.
Lee's glance turned to the door feet away... something was being pulled away by silhouetted figures. Matt's body. The operation was careless. The lifeless man's body bag was launched into the back of a suspicious van. There was clearly nothing. The body bag... was empty. "I can see tomorrow's headline- 'Assassin Assassinated'." Shaw thought what he said was clever. Lee was dumbstruck by the sight in front of him. The conspiracies must have had a hint of truth in them. The two walked on later on that night, Lee saying nothing in fear of ridicule.
