Morbius May No Longer Be the Villainous Frontrunner for Spidey 4

Producer Todd Black rules out the vampire for the 4th installment...or does he?

While picking producer Todd Black's brain about "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," I asked a few questions about the upcoming "Spider-Man 4." Black was understandably cryptic, but here's what I did learn:

- Kirsten Dunst is definitely on board. Last month, director Sam Raimi was quoted as saying he didn't know if the actor was going to sign up to play Mary Jane again, but it appears that she has.

- Contrary to online rumors, it doesn't look like the script will feature a wedding between Mary Jane and Peter Parker. Black had no knowledge of that subplot.

- Also contrary to online rumors (but really, are there any other kind?), the villain will not be Morbius the vampire. Sure, vampires are hot, but Black squashed that rumor completely.

- As for who the villain will be, Black had this to say: "We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

I don't know if this guy is messing with us - probably not. But either way he doesn't give us much of a clue about the villian being a big part of Ny.......What the hell does that mean? My biggest guesses are Kingpin (a stupid idea considering the obvious rehashing) - or the Lizard considering the sewers of Ny? Who knows? Ideas anyone?



Looks like Morbius is probably out though unless this guy's being a total ass.

Morbius? That was not a cool idea. at all. lol. I think it's funny that a bunch of people were going Morbius crazy and how it would fit into the storyline and then the producer just casually says, "Morbius in Spiderman 4? Nope!" -

Then it's over. I love it.

I always hated Morbius so I'm relieved! My hate for him aside, this film needs to make up a lot of ground so a "flavour of the month" vampire is NOT going to cut it. I'm not saying Morbius wouldn't work but it's not good throwing him in just because "vampires are hot".

I love how everybody is so happy that Morbius is out. Like having an A-List villain like Venom made any difference for the suckfest called Spider-Man 3. It doesn't matter who the villain is if the script sucks.

All sarcasm aside, Morbius crush? Not at all. I just laugh because 99% of the anti-Morbius arguments have been "I don't like vampires" or "Morbius is stupid" without a single rationale or reasoning behind them.

As I previously stated, they could use any of the top tier villains and it won't matter if they script sucks or if the decide to throw in "beatnik" Peter Parker again.

I've pretty much washed my hands of the Spider-Man movies after that last piece of sh*t they released. They have a lot of ground to make up in my opinion.

Good, vampires have been oversaturated in movies recently and we don't need any more cropping up in 'superhero' movies, unless it is logical like Blade or Hellboy. Sam Raimi likes the old school villains and Venom was not his choice for SM3, rather he was shoe-horned in at the request of Avi Arad at Marvel as he was a fan favourite. I think we are building up for the sixth film to feature the Sinister Six. Doc Ock and Sandman have been already been introduced (I know Doc Ock is supposedly dead but any comic book fan knows that no one dies forever - That could be a James Bond title!) From the original Sinister six we need Mysterio, Electro, Kraven the Hunter and the Vulture, so I would expect to see any combination of these villians being introduced over the next 3 movies.

It simply has to be the Lizard. I've thought that he'd be the villain since the first movie he just fit's with raimi's style. Hopefully this is the case.

I'm also glad Moribus isn't in the fourth installment. I mean honestly how would he really fit in the Spidey universe on screen? To regular joe schmoes he would seem out of place compared to the others which are genetically enhanced by chemicals or animal oriented. Sure you could say that's how the vampire comes along, but really, a vampire and Spider-Man? Works in comics not on screen.

And like topcat10 said, the vampire thing is being over done, and we already had a vampire hunter, why make another Marvel movie about a vampire hunt? Spidey has so many more known villains that would blend better in the universe Rami designed on screen.

Kirsten Dunst... I really dislike her, and more so as MJ. I dont know if its how the script is written for the character, or the character itself, or Kirsten but I dont like her. I dont even think she brings much to the table. They should write her out. They are not even getting married in this next movie? Why bother I say. She gets on my nerves!

Okay, I say in almost all my Spidey posts. Bruce Campbell as the Spot. A quick one two three cameo, or have Spot get away and come back and get caught in Spidey 5 and you could still have the main villian storyline.

Only problem I have with Morbius is because the whole vampire thing seems to be drained (pun intended) of all its cinema power. Just makes me think (at least ever since that terrible plague called Twilight) that it would be like Spider-man meets Ed or whatever his name is.

In the comics he is a rather gifted and exotic character, at least for a take on a vampire. He would bring a different approach to Spider-man but at the moment I personaly feel it is the wrong approach at this juncture.

Hahaha, no more morbius. I can live with that. The whole Kraven/Lizard thing sounds good, but i would leave it for a 5th movie. Give me Mysterio, Rhino or Vulture instead!

@Keven, good job at holding back ;). No one can expect you to go cold turkey :P. And some things just have to be said :D

alten2345 - My rationalisation for not wanting Morbius is that if he was in, it would most likely be just because "vampires are hot". He would be thrown in the same way Venom was thrown in. I agree with you that to some extent it doesn't matter who the villain is as long as he's written into the story nicely. As a perfect (personal) example, I always hated Doc Oc in the comics and even cartoons so I was more than sceptical when I heard he was in SM2, but he turned out to be one of the best on screen villains this genre has seen!

Morbius and Spiderman have a long long history. Morbius and Spider have been at each other twice as long as Venom or Carnage if not more. Morbius has been fighting Spderman since 1971. That is 40 years.

Yeah I am a big Morbius fan...But I would rather see the Lizard than Morbius in Spiderman 4. I was just hoping to have both of them. Morbius has been around for 40 years but Lizard has been around for 50. Spiderman The Lizard and Morbius have a long intertwined history together. The first appearance of Morbius was when he was attacked by the Lizard and ultimately defeated by Spiderman and The Lizard. Morbius bit The Lizard, and through a wierd enyme infection, made The Lizard retain the personality of Connors. Connors then synthesized the 'Morbius enzyme' and used it on Spiderman to cure him from the 'four-arms' mutation. All this stuff is classic Spiderman.

"...In the Bonus Features of the Blade DVD under the La Magra title, an alternate ending can be seen where Blade, after dispatching Deacon Frost, walks out onto the rooftop of a building only to glimpse a figure whose identity is concealed behind a cloth mask. The writer, David S. Goyer, has stated that he originally intended Morbius to be the primary villain should there be a sequel to Blade. This was eventually scrapped in favor of the Reaper storyline in the actual Blade II film."

Like I said before, a movie about the Midnight Sons would be cool. It would have to have Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Morbius, Blade and the NightStalkers, And The Darkhold...Marvel needs to retain the rights to ghost Rider.

I haven't read a comic book in years, but back in the day I kind of thought Morbius was pretty cool. He always had this weird sort of misery because he screwed himself up so badly.

But anyway I never believed for a minute that Raimi was going to do that. He was just messing with our heads.

My feeling is that they will go with the Lizard, and that would be SO awesome. And also I will submit this humble opinion: If I was Raimi, I would look at the plot element of a monster on the loose in NY as a chance to introduce a certain big game hunter..

THAT would be awesome.

Jojo: I've got a buddy who saw the Man-Thing movie. Said it was the worst comic-related film ever. Idiots who wrote it didn't even know that Louisiana has parishes, not counties. And it just gets worse from there!

Morbius v. Blade could be really fun. Good reference on the "four arms" Spidey.

I'm with a lot of people wanting to see Kraven and the Lizard. That could make for a good movie, and make up for the last one.

I just hope to God that there is no wedding in this movie. That's the only thing that could make this more of a bad soap opera than the last one. Cue the cheesy organ music: Will Peter make it to the wedding on time or will Doc Ock finish him off before he makes it to the church? Oh no! The Lizard has taken Aunt May hostage! The Kingpin has raided the reception and eaten all the cocktail weinies! Mary Jane is having second thoughts about marrying a superhero! WhatEVER will happen next?

I seriously doubt Kingpin, he was in the Daredevil movie, which is owned by Fox. I can't imagine Sony can use him, and honestly I hope they don't. I don't want to see another lame version of Kingpin, a new villain not a vampire not a mob boss, boo that crap so many more villains to choose from.

Unless they can do it right this time and find a big fat white guy to be Kingpin then it's not going to happen. I personally would love to see Tombstone and Hammerhead and then they can introduce a Kingpin later. Isn't how that new spidey cartoon went anyways? What's wrong with that story line? I'm glad they're not using vampires, talk about overdone these last couple of years. I would like to see the lizard as well it's about time for him to show up. Just not sure if what's his name is on board for the movie yet. Guess we'll have to wait to find out about him, see if any of you guys can dig up some stuff about him wanting to reprise his role as Dr. Conners. Can't wait to see what they come up with. And am I the only one who thinks KD is a hottie? Come on she's not that bad it could be worse.

I would have to say the idea of Kingpin as the main villain is a bit of a stretch. Fox still holds the rights to the character after the Daredevil movie, so it would be pretty costly, and highly unlikely that Raimi would WANT to use him.
As for the Lizard, he's probably the most logical choice.
I'm holding hope for a Lizard/Kraven/Chameleon trio. ;-)

You know, I read the entire Twilight series, and thought it was pretty o.k. (the ONLY reason I started reading them was because I live less than an hour from Forks, WA)... Then I read the True Blood series and discovered that Stephanie Meyers is a complete hack! She stole ALL of the aspects of her stories that I thought were interesting from Charlaine Harris' books!
The fact that people are still reading her plaigurized works makes me ill!
(And the movie blew.)

I think if you introduce Kraven as a character, it only makes sense to introduce his brother (in some capacity). They're both formidable villains in their own right. Just because they're not physically as formidable as some of Spidey's other enemies does not make them any less dangerous. They are FAR more cunning, and would make for a far more intense psychological story.

Personally I enjoyed the Anne Rice vampire chronicles and have not read Twilight or any of Charlaine Harris' books. Lestat is one of the best vampires ever written. Anyway Morbius would have been neat to see but there are other characters I would rather see like Rhino, Shocker, Vulture, LIZARD!

Shaman: Yeah, I thought it would also make sense for the story to include both... You have Sergei (Kraven) as the big game hunter/assassin, and his brother Dmitri (Chameleon) as the guy who secures his targets. Dmitri is a master of disguises, so he would be able to find out the identity of Spider-Man so that Sergei could begin the hunt. Throw in the Lizard as a "target" for Kraven, and an excuse for why he is in New York.
(He's actually been sanctioned to take out Spidey.)

And the beauty is, it doesn't matter who hires him! It could be ANYONE in the cannon, and it would still make sense!!!

Even if they did have Morbius as the villain I don't think that it would have tread on Twilight because Morbius is much more interesting than any vampire or character for that matter in Twilight. He has a science based background and creation which would have fit nice into a Spidey movie but I am glad that they will have another villain instead of him. He should have been in a Blade movie since they almost went that route with the Nomac character in Blade 2.

ironknight27: You're right...to a degree. Morbius IS a far more complex and interesting character than your average vampire, but with the recent fad, it would seem contrived. Like they were trying to ride the vampire bandwagon.

adamant- while I agree that everyone is jumping on the vamp bandwagon, like wulfcomicfan, I was hoping that a character like Morbius could redeem the vampire image. While I would like to see a Morbius movie I think he would fit better in a Spidey or Blade movie.

I have no problem with Morbius, but I never saw him as a lead character to base the movie around. He'd only be good as a side villain in my opinion, unless they did the obvious tie in with Blade, which they would never do.

After all the build up in the past 3 movies they need to just come on and do the Lizard. And bring Venom back since he's getting a movie to himself (Spidey and Venom team up against Carnage, like in the first carnage comic, that's what I want to see!)

Meh. I was just warming up to having Morbius being the villain, but was never really for it. Still hoping for a Lizard/ Mysterio combo as their contrary nature of their powers/ skills would provide a good show. One has sheer brawn, savagery and deadly claws while the other has illusions and missdirection. Fending both off at the same time, or even in different situations one after the other, would be a lot for Spidey to handle. They can even use desperation/ exhaustion (both physical and mental) as the main theme for this movie, much like they did in Batman: Knightfall.

Imagine getting so see an epic fight with the lizard while spidey is trying to orient himself from Mysterio's illusions. Hell, I can see Mysterio using his illusions to take advantage of the Lizard and use him as the brawn he needs during the climactic final scene.

mr jojo i know you are one of the elder representatives on this site so ima respect your knowledge of comic book history. to say morbius had a longer history with spiderman than venom or carnage might be accurate but it was no where near as personal. the symbiote was PART of peter parker (or was peter parker just a part of the symbiote...?) its not venoms fault that they screwed up his character on the big screen. i like the idea of the lizard just because doctor connors has been in the first 3 movies already but he cant be the only bad guy. i do believe connors still has a piece of the symbiote from the third movie... "MAXIMUM CARNAGE" anyone?

ok people keep on talking about the sinister six but doesn't the king pin bring them together im not seeing the ling pin any any spidey movie ever im thinking they'll replace the king pin with tombstone like they did in the new cartoon then i see the sinnister 6 in spidey 6 they dont need to introduce the characters in 4 or 5 they can just throw them in there and i think the sinnister 6 should be scorpion doc oc rhino mysterio shocker scorpion and vulture the only ones that i think deserve a spot on #5 are mysterio and scopion the others can just be thrown in
