Following up on the previous article about the Daredevil and Black Widow show that almost happened, it turns out Angie Bowie (model name Jipp Jones) also did a photo shoot for the second attempt at a Wonder Woman show.

Believe it or not, Lynda Carter wasn't the first Wonder Woman on television. She was preceded by two other live-action Amazons. The first was Linda Harrison, who played alongside Charlton Heston as Nova in Planet of the Apes in an unaired 1967 screen test. The second live-action Wonder Woman was Cathy Lee Crosby, who starred in a 1974 Wonder Woman TV movie, which Mrs. Bowie was trying out for.

The Wonder Woman museum elaborates:

Bowie's audition was mentioned in the Feb. 11, 1974 issue of Newsweek, in which it was reported that Angela Bowie had been considered for the role of Wonder Woman for an upcoming ABC-TV movie but lost the part for her refusal to wear a bra.

Bowie herself wrote in her autobiography in 1993:

First I showed them the photographs, which totally flabbergasted the director- things were going well so far- but then, before I went to my dressing room to don the stipulated turtleneck, some woman from the studio came up to me.

"I see you're not wearing a bra," she said. "You have to wear one for the screen test. It's mandatory."

I couldn't believe it. I hadn't worn a bra for years. "Well, if that's what you want, okay," I said. "But I think you're going to have a problem finding one small enough."

She didn't like that very much, but she walked off, and I went to the dressing room.

If all that wasn't bizarre enough, one of the show's writers tried to pull the ol' "casting couch" on Bowie. It turned out that she was never seriously considered for the role.

Why does this remind me of 70s porn?
Wish I could relive the time I discovered my dad's secret porn stash.

Interesting. Miss Carter's beautiful cones of doom still represent the best of Wonder Woman.

Linda Carter and Chris reeves were perfect casting something the directors of moderern superhero movies should take note of.

Wow, I just looked up the Cathy Lee Crosby Wonder Woman... Horrible. She was blonde and the costume looked nothing like WW.... Check it out...

A Wonder Woman TV movie? I'm glad I wasn't born in the 70's; seems like people in the TV/Movie industry were hard up for good ideas. With obvious exceptions, of course.

She's got nothing on Lynda Carter.

Angela Bowie is and was gross. Too bad Lynda's WW wasn't more serious. I enjoyed the show and it sure made want to grow up faster!
comicb00kguy - 1/23/2012, 6:24 AM
I think it's best for everyone that this never happened.

If it had, we may never have had Lynda Carter in the role, and she wound up as THE iconic Wonder Woman.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 1/23/2012, 9:31 AM
It's amazing all these years we have had different Superman and Batman actors that each generation could identify with, but only one Wonder Woman Linda Carter! That makes it tougher on the actress and director who finally get the go ahead to do a new WW.

They didn't have sandwiches back then...
