The actor states in an interview that he was at first hesitant to take on a role in the sequel after the negative reaction to the first movie.

In the reboot/sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Idris Elba plays Moreau alongside Nicholas Cage's Johnny Blaze. Idris spoke with the Huffington Post about his role and his thoughts when he was asked to do Ghost Rider.

HP: Your character, Moreau, seems like a carefree guy.

Elba: I don't think he cares, but I think he lives in his skin so much that he's well-lived and well-traveled. But he does have a mission.

HP: Did you go to them or did they come to you about this role?
Elba: They came to me.

After the preliminary questions, Elba spoke about his reluctance about signing up for the next outing of The Rider after the lackluster performance of the first film.

HP: This sequel is nothing like the first film. But did it go through your head, "Maybe I shouldn't do this movie because people didn't like the first one?"

Elba: Yeah. It was definitely a sort of like a, "Hm, should I be doing this?" because of the previous film. But, there was a new take on it and I personally know what I can bring to the table and I just felt that there was something there to work with. So, I believe that the second version of Ghost Rider has a completely different DNA. Just a different feeling and tempo -- and I'm part of that. So, hopefully, people will be forgiving.

HP: That's interesting that you say "forgiving." Do you think people are hesitant because of the first one?

Elba: I don't think they're hesitant, no. I think that any preconceptions that they have from the original Ghost Rider is going to go in with them when they see this film. But, they're going to be pleasantly surprised on the way out, I think.

Elba said that it took him a couple of days to decide if he would do it, but he felt it had potential. When asked if he had seen the first film, he said that he had seen "some of it." He also stated he felt that this version was more grounded in reality, that while special effects were a big part of the film, the story is about Johnny Blaze and the audience will feel connected to him.

Elba said he had very little prior knowledge of Ghost Rider and that he hadn't read any of the comics but did research it after getting the role. He said that the comics were "alright" and that he felt this movie sticks pretty close to the source material.

Johnny Blaze, still struggling with the curse of being the Ghost Rider, is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when a secret sect of the church asks him to save a boy from the devil. At first Johnny is reluctant to use his power, but it's the only way to save the boy and possibly rid himself of this curse forever.

Ghost Rider cruises into theaters this Friday and stars: Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Fergus Riordan, Ciarán Hinds, Violante Placido, Christopher Lambert, and Johnny Whitworth

Seeing it this weekend, looking forward to it.

I only enjoy Nic Cage when he's going on about bees.
TheHitchhikingGhost - 2/15/2012, 7:08 PM
I think Idris is still hesitant. Lucky he has tons of talent to fall back on. He'll come out of this one unscathed.
Ghostt - 2/15/2012, 7:11 PM
whats up with Elba and Marvel. Are they promising him Luke Cage or Black Panther? and if so, doesn't taking these weird supporting roles diminish his chances at becoming a main character. This guy has talent, hate to see him blow his wad on supporting roles
MrReese - 2/15/2012, 7:13 PM
The Great Heimdall woulda saw this coming ;)
sexfoodcomics - 2/15/2012, 7:21 PM
I wonder if nic cage will be talking about camel toes in this movie.
tazmaniak - 2/15/2012, 7:30 PM
@Ghostt, I don't think he's blowing his wad on supporting roles.While he is ultra talented, he is still making a name for himself.He still needs to take those supporting roles.

And this is still Hollywood and he's a black actor whose name isn't Will Smith or Denzel Washington, so he doesn't have his pick of lead roles.Not yet, anyway.

But, he is getting there.He's proved in Luther that he is a leading man.He's playing the ship's captain in Prometheus and he is the lead in Pacific Rim(a role that was intended for Tom Cruise) so that should boost his cred.

I'm also wondering about the other Marvel roles.They knew they had plans to do Black Panther, Luke Cage and Blade projects before he was cast as Heimdall, so why would they cast him as a secondary character instead of one of those leading characters?They say he nailed his audition, so did they just want to work with him now?And why would you want to reuse an actor for a film that will probably be set in the same universe?

Anyway, good luck to him.

idris elba is an amazing actor!

i hope at least this movie is decent. just for him. he's a quality actor who definitely deserves a break through in hollywood.

i'm not suprised he was hesistant, i thought the 1st movie was crap. dont know the comic but dont care, it wasnt a good MOVIE! to a degree being faithful to the comics shouldnt be a priority to making a good movie! even though ironicly a lot of movies suffered for not being faithful lol but still making a brillant movie should be fine with changing the comic a bit.
Supes17 - 2/15/2012, 7:58 PM
He should have listened to his gut.
This movie'a gonna suck

I was about to watch the early screen today but after reading some bad reviews and one that scared me the most, saying it's worst then the first one. So I'll just wait for what more people say on Friday, if it's worst then the frist one, count me out but if they say it's an improvement but still not the best, just more action I'm in this.
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/15/2012, 8:11 PM
@chaos

Being fateful is good but not that important as making a great movie, be fateful but not too fateful and your forgetting the rest of the audience.
GUNSMITH - 2/15/2012, 8:14 PM
WATCHING IT THIS WEEKEND, HOPING FOR THE BEST.
chaos91 - 2/15/2012, 8:22 PM
@xXkryptoniteXx

thats what i was trying to say. be respectful to the source maaterial but make a good movie first. there is a fine line between the two. some can make up for it by being a very, very good movie but being different to the materail, (nolan comes to mind, but i still think he's really faithful to the character)
thewolfx - 2/15/2012, 8:36 PM
im not seeing this till reviews roll out , i will not be duuped again

Grimm - 2/15/2012, 9:02 PM
It's sad that the first one was such an incredible let down to me... I will wait for this in RedBox unfortunately...
Grimm - 2/15/2012, 9:03 PM
Sorry, but even the promo pic gunsmith has up there is pushing me away...

Idris Elba is a one of the best actors in the world right now. I recently just started watching Luther and holy crap he takes a more or less typical cop crime-drama and makes it interesting.

I want to see him as 007 and would love to see him play a Superhero, possibly Luke Cage or better yet Green Lantern John Stewart
DioFoRio - 2/15/2012, 9:35 PM
Idris Elba Was Hesitant To Appear In GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE.....then he saw what they were gonna pay him....Man's gotta eat
DioFoRio - 2/15/2012, 9:37 PM
@113 John Stewart for sure.
vtopa - 2/15/2012, 9:42 PM
He sounds ambivalent. Hedging bets?
misner89 - 2/15/2012, 9:51 PM
Tallglass54 - 2/15/2012, 10:01 PM
So I have a question since every time an article is posted about him, someone says he should be the next James Bond. If he were to be the next Bond would it be business as usual or do you start all over? I don't mean to sound racist because I have no problem with him being Bond, but that is a big shift in the series. So do you reboot or do you carry on like usual?
JohnTom88 - 2/15/2012, 10:01 PM
Elba fits better as Luke Cage strong, likeable guy than Black Panther kind yet shady person. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a better actor for Black Panther.
ZombieOverEasy - 2/15/2012, 10:32 PM
@Tallglass54 I'd say business as usual. The only Bond flicks that are directly related are the recent ones with Craig with Quantum of Solace being a direct sequel. Most of the Bond flicks are kind of stand-alone and through most of the lead actor change-ups they were pretty much just business as usual.

So why not just treat it like another Bond adventure? I'm all-for Elba as Bond.

@JohnTom88 Elba's far too British for Cage. Not to say I wouldn't go see a Luke Cage flicks starring him.
holeymonkey - 2/15/2012, 11:34 PM
Man, that picture up top looks as though ol' Nic is dealing with a urinary infection....
ScootyPuffJr - 2/15/2012, 11:53 PM
@Misner That's the Nic I hate to love.
jimoakley666 - 2/16/2012, 3:13 AM
@Just1Superguy - You think a person who doesn't want a white character played by a black actor is racist? Does that work the other way around too? Waving that term around so flippantly takes away from the shit that should be flung at the real racists. Dunce.
marvel72 - 2/16/2012, 4:00 AM
its another pay check,why be hesitant?
BackwardGalaxy - 2/16/2012, 5:12 AM
Good actor.
BlanketMan - 2/16/2012, 5:31 AM
"No reviews yet :( "

Yeah, when a movie is less than 24 hours from its US wide release and Rotten Tomatoes still has not a single review by an American critic - MAJOR red flag... Sony's trying very hard to keep this turd under wraps so they can at least get a decent haul on opening weekend. I'll probably be there, anyway - like DoubleD, I'm a sucker for just about every CBM, especially based on a Marvel character. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised!
knocturnalzen10 - 2/16/2012, 6:10 AM
second favorite actor behind clive owen , think he'll be the only bright spot in this movie................
ScootyPuffJr - 2/16/2012, 6:52 AM
Oh, haven't you heard? Spidey is gonna make a cameo. Someone get Thorv!
ClosetNerd - 2/16/2012, 7:10 AM
Does this movie have any reviews yet?
jazzman - 2/16/2012, 10:52 AM
@Ghostt

u cant blame him for taking supporting roles when Hollywood dont give alot of chances for unknown or underrated black actors a chance.

@ZombieOverEasy

what u mean far too british for the role of Luke Cage u do realise he is a actor. the guy played American roles u get he was in THE WIRE.
Ryguy88 - 2/16/2012, 1:44 PM
So far it sounds like the new one is even worse!
Ghostt - 2/16/2012, 6:20 PM
@jazzman and Tazmaniak

I am just concerned that playing in 2 CBMs might diminish his chances at a main CBM character. I think he's the guy for Luke Cage. He's a cool guy.
