Forbes on the Chances of Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Thor 2, Star Trek Into Darkness & Pacific Rim Hitting $1 Billion

2013 is a big year for comic book movies. Fans have argued back and forth which of the many films could break the coveted billion mark. Now Forbes weighs in on the possibilities.

According to Forbes.com contributor Scott Mendelson, "there is a pretty decent chance that not a single film will gross [a billion] in 2013."

With this said, he does acknowledge the possibility for surprise, pointing to Star Trek into Darkness, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and Pacific Rim as possible candidates for breaking a billion:

"There is the possibility for surprise and the unexpected breakout. Star Trek made just $395 million worldwide in 2009, but it’s certainly possible that the 3D/IMAX-enhanced Star Trek into Darkness could ‘pull a Dark Knight’ and capitalize in the original’s good will and massively outperform its predecessor (Batman Begins earned just $375 million back in 2005). But that’s not a guarantee.Iron Man 3 could build on the success of The Avengers and earn $1 billion the third time around, again enhanced by 3D and IMAX, but the previous two films topped out at $585 million and $623 million respectively, so that’s an awfully big jump to presume. Man of Steel is no guarantee, as Superman Returns earned $391 million back in 2006 and it’s partially a question of whether or not the Zack Snyder-helmed/Christopher Nolan-produced epic can deliver an iconic Superman film and/or whether the world still needs a Superman film. Pacific Rim is the major wildcard of the summer, an original entry that is gaining massive buzz among the geek set but. But even with that whole 3D boost thingy going for it, I’d argue that how well Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters vs. robots epic does in July depends on how good or bad the summer slate up to that point is (I’ll expand on that in a later essay)."

Mendelson does not see Thor: The Dark World as breaking $1 billion, arguing that the movie "will surely get a post-Avengers boost, but going from $449 million to $1 billion without a major selling point (like a marquee villain played by a major star) is arguably impossible."

iron man 3,man of steel & pacific rim all might hit a billion,i think the hobbit the desolation of smaug will definitely hit a billion.
Sophisticated - 4/6/2013, 2:15 PM
Make it rain up in churr!
Sophisticated - 4/6/2013, 2:16 PM
Lotr is so done . That last movie was bogus if you can stay awake through it.
JerBear - 4/6/2013, 2:20 PM
@THANOSxRISING
The Hobbit: AUJ was great and also crossed a billion. LOTR is far from "done."
BANEofExistence - 4/6/2013, 2:23 PM
Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and possibly Star Trek.
JerBear - 4/6/2013, 2:23 PM
Iron Man 3, Catching Fire, and Desolation of Smaug are the safe bets. Man of Steel, Star Trek and Thor: TDW all have a chance depending on how good they are. Pacific Rim has as much of a chance as Oz does.
BANEofExistence - 4/6/2013, 2:23 PM
Though Iron Man 2 sucked so that may hurt it
Spideyguy94 - 4/6/2013, 2:24 PM
Iron man 3 I can see hitting a billion. Man of steel maybe, depending on how good it is and considering its a reboot and an origin story.
arsonjack - 4/6/2013, 2:28 PM
so iron man and thor needs avengers to succeed, go batman.
Nick56 - 4/6/2013, 2:29 PM
i think Man of Steel can easily make a billion. Iron Man 3 may come close but I doubt it will make it past 800 mil. Thor the dark world will probs make about 600 mil at most and i honestly see pacific rim flopping or barely making its budget back cause it looks awful and laughable
Anton - 4/6/2013, 2:55 PM
@Nick
Pacific Rim will be a HUGE hit, they are already developing the sequel. (also, PR looks fantastic, you on the other hand - as an idiot)

@FRIG
We all do, stop your stupid trolling, nobody cares.

@JerBear
Do agree, although PR has buzz much stronger than Oz and Thor:DW has zero chances to hit the billion.
marvel72 - 4/6/2013, 3:03 PM
oz has been out four weeks & has gross $421,041,000,i don't know how many more countries it has left to be released in but i can't see it doing more than $600,000,000.
robster - 4/6/2013, 3:22 PM
LotR were SOOOO long and boring I didn't even bother with that Hobbit one. Just took a lot of people's word for it that it was crap. But everyone has their likes and dislikes,plain and simple. I look forward to those four big movies this summer,and I hope at least two of'em will be great. I'm happy with that.

Broken record here, but no mention of Iron Man 3 earning Chinese money?! Really?! It will make a billion. Marvel is playing the same card as last year, making different versions of the film to engage international audiences (such as replacing the Soundgarden track with a Hindi band). Except, with China, the world's second largest film market - which so happens to eat up IMAX and 3D - there is no doubt that Iron Man 3 will make massive bank.
SpiderParker - 4/6/2013, 4:48 PM
"but going from $4449 million to $1 billion"

Something just doesn't feel right. :P
JerBear - 4/6/2013, 4:54 PM
@Anton
Are you really telling me Pacific Rim "WILL" be a huge hit and has a chance, yet Thor has zero chance? Whaaat???
ManCalledSting - 4/6/2013, 5:29 PM
I would love to see Man of Steel make over a billion dollars.
brazilianbatman - 4/6/2013, 5:49 PM
pacific rim breaking a billion? hahahaahahaha
they will make 400 if they are lucky
brazilianbatman - 4/6/2013, 5:51 PM
my bets are hobbit 2 and iron man 3.

RextheKing - 4/6/2013, 5:59 PM
The safest bets are Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit 2.
Those I think will come close are Man of steel and Thor 2.
marvel72 - 4/6/2013, 6:01 PM
@ SpiderParker

batman begins $371,853,783

the dark knight $1,001,921,825

it could happen the same way with iron man 2 & iron man 3.
Facade - 4/6/2013, 6:57 PM
Hobbit is a sure bet. LOTR has such a following it won't fail.
typicalfanboy - 4/6/2013, 7:10 PM
the thing is all these supposed "locks" to break a billion are sequels. aside from avatar, titanic, what movies ever broke a billion on it's own without help from a good previous movie(s)?

MOS - doubtful maybe 400-600mil(nolan name, riding on tdk trilogy, but also it's not a sequel, and tdkr wasn't great for everyone.)
Pac Rim - doubtful maybe 200-350mil(not much marketing)
IM3 - Possibly because it's a sequel, it's riding avengers's coattails, and big name actor as the villain.
Into Darkness - possibly since it's a sequel to a very entertaining star trek movie.

the above films are going to be big, but unless the non sequels are events like avatar and titanic, they aren't going to make a billion. i want to see all of them. they look awesome.
l0rdleg0las - 4/6/2013, 10:02 PM
The Dark Knight didn't jump that much in box office because of the quality of Batman Begins, it jumped some because of quality, but a shit ton of that revenue was due to Ledger killing himself. (and don't give me the accidental OD argument. you take that much prescription meds in that wide a variety, you know you won't wake up)
TheOneAboveAll - 4/6/2013, 10:22 PM
"will surely get a post-Avengers boost, but going from $4449 million

In any universe $4449 million is very big...I think that might be a typo
Ramiel - 4/7/2013, 12:08 AM
Only The Hobbit: TDOS will hit a $1B this year. IM3 will come close, but will miss the mark.
AmazingFantasy - 4/7/2013, 1:01 AM
Tl, dr
KalElKent - 4/7/2013, 5:55 PM
MAN OF STEEL not making close to a billion? is Forbes stupid or just retarded? the most popular hero world wide with Zack Snyder & Nolan/goyer + weta digital graphics + Hans zimmer + Russell Crowe,Kevin Costner,Diane lane,Amy Adams,Michael Shannon,Lawrence fishburne,Henry cavill.This is the most talented cast of any comic book movie this year!
boyofsteel - 4/7/2013, 7:52 PM
@KalElKent preach it brotha. Anyone who says Man of Steel isn't going to make a shit ton of money is mentally handicapped, it will hit a billion (drops mic)
EarOne - 4/8/2013, 1:26 AM
my prediction IF all the movies deliver all they're promising:

1. Man of Steel
2. Pacific Rim
3. Iron Man 3
4. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
5. Monsters University
6. Star Trek Into Darkness
7. Fast & Furious 6
8. World War Z
9. The Croods..with Epic in its shadow
10. Thor: The Dark World
knocturnalzen10 - 4/8/2013, 6:18 AM

JorL5150 - 4/8/2013, 12:46 PM
im not worried about it- but it IS awesome that comic book movies are in this discussion.

eat it titanic!
Emjeed - 4/9/2013, 5:35 PM
I'm going with Star Trek on this one... Although Man Of Steel could benefit a lot from the Nolan name attached to it and good word of mouth should it be all it promises to be
