Henry Cavill's Superman to Be "As Contemporary" As Possible

The casting of Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder's Superman film will usher in a new era for the Man of Steel, and the impression given from Warner execs is that this will be an opportunity to put away previous cinematic versions of the character and offer something new.

"He's got an amazing quality," a studio exec confided to Deadline.com. "He doesn't look too much like Reeve and Routh, but he's big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him. We're really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible."

This will, of course, mean the John Williams theme from Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie that symbolized the character for a couple of generations will be retired. The film itself will likely be as radical a rethink of the franchise as Batman Begins was to Batman and Robin.

Exiles - 1/30/2011, 1:35 PM
hey if its any good as batman begins then it works for me but one thing I don't want to see is some dark take because no matter what you say thats not superman but I am not saying it should be totally campy. I just hope we get to see superman return to the big screen properly this time
luckylu - 1/30/2011, 1:36 PM
sad to see the the john williams score go but oh well. this sounds great and hopefully supes will beat some sh*t up and throw lots of punches and fully use his powers.
gibbyblaylock - 1/30/2011, 1:36 PM
Hey Darth Vader, didja hear? They're not going to use John Williams' theme for the new Superman movie.

jazzman - 1/30/2011, 1:36 PM
new theme music i cant wait but the theme music got to be epic

@LEEE777

to me he doesnt.

EdGross - 1/30/2011, 1:36 PM
I think I mentioned this a while ago: I had the opportunity to meet Cavill in person and talk to him for a few minutes, and while he was speaking all I kept thinking was that this guy would make an incredible Superman. Very pleased about this news, and you damn well that Leee is, too. I guess WB listened to you.
continuezero - 1/30/2011, 1:36 PM
Tough to judge, I haven't seen anything he's been in...but at least the Welling and Routh arguments can finally stop. He does look the part.
drfate - 1/30/2011, 1:37 PM
cool.
dahamma - 1/30/2011, 1:37 PM
good, Reees was great, but i dont want a reeve imitation like Routh did. Give us a new take on the character.
revloveR - 1/30/2011, 1:38 PM
@leee exactly.

kinda wish he was taller though.
ClaireLannister2016 - 1/30/2011, 1:39 PM
I want to see this:

*or at least a fight where superman beats the living crap out of someone*
Cyclops - 1/30/2011, 1:40 PM
Next Brainiac and Lex Luthor castings...
LEEE777 - 1/30/2011, 1:43 PM
ED @ Wicked stuff, I bet he's a real nice guy too!

He's great in TUDORS and was class in STARDUST too!

revloveR @ ; )

...an yeah he is 6'1" tho, they can make him look a couple of inches taller easy.
Moreci333 - 1/30/2011, 1:45 PM
This is good news, we need a real re-boot and to do that they have to change the theme its to campy and cheesy for today plus it would just remind me of Donner and Singers Superman and again its too cheesy. But it better be a real epic theme, themes help make the movie.
LEEE777 - 1/30/2011, 1:47 PM
P.S. Pity about the Superman tune tho, but Cavill makes more than up 4 it lol! : P

Just hope we don't go to day one again, Superman's origin has been told a billion times, we need straight to the Superman action!

(Bit like they did in The Incredible Hulk)
Twenty23Three - 1/30/2011, 1:51 PM
I wonder if this gives us a hint at them attempting to give us a modern suit? Id rather keep it classic but you never know what they are thinking over there at WB
Ship - 1/30/2011, 1:53 PM
ahh, the can use the theme for action scenes, and i hope a lot of fricking action, the theme is part of superman, is like his cape, in fact it seems like when we see the cape swing, it is singing the jhon williams theme.
I Warning u Warner, use the theme for action scenes. we all like it.
GUNSMITH - 1/30/2011, 1:57 PM
SNYDER PROBABLY READ BLOGS AND THIS SITE BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR HIM TO BE SUPERMAN CONTINUOUSLY
Exiles - 1/30/2011, 1:59 PM
@LEEE the superman origin story has only been show once on the big screen and that was in donner's superman so how you came to the conclusion thats its been shown a billion times on the big screen I will never know.

I for one don't care if they do the origin or not I want a good movie its that simple
Cyclops - 1/30/2011, 1:59 PM
Does this mean new suit?
EdGross - 1/30/2011, 2:00 PM
Hopefully they'll incorporate the Williams theme at certain moments in the score. As to the costume, I have to agree with CaptainProg: getting rid of the "underwear" will, I think, contemporize the outfit in a very good positive way.
ThomYorke - 1/30/2011, 2:01 PM
isnt hans zimmer doing the score?
Phlegmbot - 1/30/2011, 2:02 PM
It'd just be nice if we had an American actor in the role for heaven's sake. It's Superman.

I keep thinking of what Donner said when he got onto his Superman flick: "There were no Americans working on this thing." Or words to that effect.

Plus, this guy looks a bit too much like Dean Cain for me...who always felt more like a Superboy than a Superman.

Would've liked this guy:
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3092417280/nm0005543.

SUPERMAN2013 - 1/30/2011, 2:03 PM
Maybe they can use SAVE ME by Remy zero for the theme ;p LOLZ
Twenty23Three - 1/30/2011, 2:05 PM
no hans zimmer said he isnt doing the score, he just commented on it.
supersteveprime18 - 1/30/2011, 2:06 PM
just dont change the costumes to much
Flop123 - 1/30/2011, 2:07 PM
Good stuff. It doesn't really bother me that they are changing the score to much, but they HAVE to stick with the same basic costume!
YourMomNaked - 1/30/2011, 2:07 PM
Tiny better [frick]ing LIVE in the gym if he's not to be CGIed.
Angelus - 1/30/2011, 2:09 PM
Most interesting. I guess the iconic costume will get an update as well. The Williams theme is without a doubt one of the msot iconic themes ever made, as most of his themes are.

I know this is kinda laaaame but I wanna suit where his cape and insignia intervenes:

Anyway, Henry Cavill will do Superman justice!
Twenty23Three - 1/30/2011, 2:11 PM
the thing about the suit is they wont have it the same as any we have seen before, merchandising will see to it that its a new take i think. However after how faithful Snyder was with Watchmen I'm hopeful we will get a classic supersuit.
NotThatGuy - 1/30/2011, 2:12 PM
O well.
zachman2013 - 1/30/2011, 2:12 PM
he better punch somthing....and costume wont get changed..snyder said cavil "would be best to be in s shield and cape...besides in watchmen costumes were spot on for almost every character.
jazzman - 1/30/2011, 2:13 PM
@Phlegmbot

but yet American actor been playing British characters u know RDJ is playing Sherlock Holmes.

@YourMomNaked

the guy been hit the gym he got ripped for his new movie coming soon.

also u need to realise Superman should not really look like a bodybuilder.

this is what Henry Cavill looks like now from the set of "The Cold Light of Day"

luckylu - 1/30/2011, 2:21 PM
@videocolor-really? you had to post your comment that big?? really????
boredsox78 - 1/30/2011, 2:21 PM
eh i wish they'd keep the john williams theme, but oh well. great find!

vermillion - 1/30/2011, 2:22 PM
Yeah he doesn't need to look like a body builder, he needs to look like he grew up on a farm. Like Tom Welling looks in Smallville, really.

Henry Cavill is going to be a great Superman. So glad he got the role.
Twenty23Three - 1/30/2011, 2:24 PM
but then again you can NEVER change iconic themes and make it work I mean imagine if they changed the STAR TREK theme for a movie it would just be...oh wait they did and it worked better than the original would have
LEEE777 - 1/30/2011, 2:24 PM
SUPERGUY @ Birthrights good but JOHN BYRNES MAN OF STEEL is awesome!

And no we don't need to go back to square one but if they do thats the way to go, the true origin of SUPES!

But exactly, the suit should be left alone, don't want it turning into the new Spidey lol.

EXILE @ Cool.

OBSCURO @ ; )

ED @ Perfect... incorporating the score is the way to go!!!

RichardTheNerd - 1/30/2011, 2:27 PM
I've got no issues with not using John Williams' theme -- this stems from feeling a little uneasy with no Danny Elfman theme in Batman Begins. Trying to apply something that isn't part of a complete vision would feel too forced -- much like Superman Returns.

Sure, Elfman's theme isn't as iconic as Williams' Supes, but it's the same principle.

Thank you John Williams for giving an amazing piece of art for the last 30 years, but it's time to try something new.
SUPERMAN2013 - 1/30/2011, 2:27 PM
LEAVE THE SUIT ALONE!
PaulRom - 1/30/2011, 2:31 PM
@TheBlackWidow DEFINITELY!
@Intruder He listens to Justine Beaver?! I just had second thoughts about their casting decision.
Anyways, if they're doing like what they did with Batman (in rebooting with a much more realistic feel), then it should rock!
SoulAllFlush - 1/30/2011, 2:36 PM
I don't mind if the theme is scraped. I'm more concerned about any 'artistic' decisions that are made that change the film Superman from the source Superman.

we don't need any Elseworld on film until the main universe has been done well.
EdGross - 1/30/2011, 2:36 PM
I hope I'm wrong, too, and the thought about the music was not presented as fact. Just conjecture based on comments made in the past, and by the studio's need for this Superman movie to stand on its own.
Checkmate - 1/30/2011, 2:39 PM
I'd like it if they used the theme for the credits, and I hope they don't go for a CGI suit.
BIGBMH - 1/30/2011, 2:39 PM
If I were to pick one Superman to say he most looks like, I'd say George Reeves. I don't know much about Cavill, but I'm satisfied and think he looks like he'll work for both Clark and Superman. I also hope when they say they're making it contemporary, they don't mean making unnecessary changes that don't add much for the sole purpose of attempting to make it feel new and different. cough!NEWSPIDERMANCOSTUME!cough!
Shunt - 1/30/2011, 2:42 PM
I hope this guy gets jacked up in the weight room.. I want to see a muscular Superman.. Im not talking HHH muscular like some of the comics depict him as, but at least have muscle definition that will show through the suit..
ThePhantom832 - 1/30/2011, 2:44 PM
to me he doesn't look different from Routh really, but I'm glad a decision has been made, now write the script and 'git'r done', keep some old, (Lois, Jimmy and Perry), add new, to the big screen that is, Doomsday, Darkseid, Brainiac, Deadshot, but actually keep Luther, a scene in the beginning of him going to jail, thereby not escaping justice, maybe a look at a newspaper, about him going to jail, while discussing the new problem at hand for Superman, and please do something to update his Uniform, he's not a wrestler, maybe stripes fading away from the sheild, rather than the shorts. Otherwise, please, please, please, do not do an origin story, or a searching for his identity, (not taking away from Smallville) but that is getting done to death, anyway, I for one am looking for a Super Movie so people can move on, best wishes to Snyder and Nolan
BloodRed - 1/30/2011, 2:52 PM
So, it's a movie about an American icon being portrayed by a British actor and it's being filmed in Canada. Riiiight...

Personally, I wanted to see Brandon Routh return but, I'm not the one making those decisions. Given an action-packed script, he would have kicked some serious arse. Maybe down the road they'll bring him back for a JLA movie...

And as far as changing the costume, that's definitely a HORRIBLE idea and not using the John Williams theme is equally HORRIBLE. Both of these things are iconic and people will look at him and say, "THAT'S not Superman. THAT doesn't sound like a Superman film to me."

You can make him contemporary as much as you want but if you stray TOO far from what people like and to what they are accustomed, they in turn, will not seek this film out. Period.

Singer did his film as an homage to Donner and didn't take his vision very far. Snyder will have to figure out how to balance how far they can go because if they go too far, they'll turn people off. That's the nuts and bolts of it.

And just because it's a film with an iconic figure, doesn't mean it will automatically make money. We all know enough examples of that situation.

I have serious reservations about this film....and one of those reasons is because Warner's is basically trying to get this done because of their lawsuit with the family of Jerry Siegel.
They are required to have a film in production by this year. So, they just want to rush this through to avoid possibly paying money to his family.

Time to cram something down the fanboys' throats!
Shunt - 1/30/2011, 2:53 PM
Im a little disappointed in this guys height.. I just checked & he's listed as 6'1.. IMO Superman should alway have a tall stature.. Reeve was 6'4 & Routh is 6'3.. So this guy is the shortest actor yet to play superman in a movie.. I think the Ideal height for Superman should be 6'5

anyways, he does look the part tho. other then his height..
