Henry Cavill Talks Superman

Prior to being announced as the next actor to play the Man of Steel, Henry Cavill had been in talks with both Brett Ratner and McG about playing the character, but both of those projects fell apart and ultimately became Superman Returns. The actor recently reflected on his first encounter with the Superman legacy.

When asked straight out about the reality of his involvement, Cavill laughed and responded, "Yes, there was talk about that, a while ago now. Must have been four or five years ago, maybe more. When McG was working on a script with them. I don't know how close I came. I understand it was very, very close and sadly the movie was cancelled because McG didn't want to fly. He certainly had a big fear of flying at the time; I think he's since overcome it. He wanted to shoot in New York, they wanted to shoot in Australia for obvious reasons. He said, 'I can't do it,' and they moved on. These things happen. It's the nature of the business."

The question, of course, was whether or not he would be interested in the role if it should be offered to him again for a rebooted version of Superman. "Very much so," said Cavill. "I'm a fan of the character, and it depends on the script and the director, though not in that order necessarily."

Apparently the director - Zack Snyder - and the screenplay - written by David Goyer -- did the trick as Cavill will don the right and blue uniform later this year.

Cavill will do the Man of Tomorrow TRUE justice :) he will be the true Supes
vermillion - 1/30/2011, 5:26 PM
Henry Cavill is a great pick. I wish I would have looked into him a lil more. I probably would have favored him over Joe M.

CAN'T WAIT! I'd love to see him appear in GL, just a little cameo. Even if it is doubtful.
PL - 1/30/2011, 5:30 PM
finally a Superman for the world of TODAY! this is going to be both something special and amazing!
Abed - 1/30/2011, 5:31 PM
Nolan will be the difference here, He can stand up to the studio and that will make the difference from a mediocre film to a timeless superman film.
EdGross - 1/30/2011, 5:34 PM
Abed, you're probably right. Richard Donner was able to stand up for his vision of Superman: The Movie and was proven right. With not only his own clout but having Christopher Nolan as his producer, Zack Snyder will likely have the same opportunity.
Krbartl78 - 1/30/2011, 5:43 PM
I don't think he is a very good choice the only reason he got the part is cause looks like a muscular guy. Superman isnt about being Super-Ripped I mean yes hes a little ripped but they have to remember he has to be Clark
Kent too and Superman he isnt about strength hes about heart and giving hope
Akercocke - 1/30/2011, 5:44 PM
Honestly he wasn't my first choice, but now he's been selected and I welcome Cavill as Superman with open arms. He may not be 6'4 and he may not be an imposing guy physically, but he's got something more important: Charisma. He's got the right personality to play the part and that, for me, is one of the most important things about Superman. And of course he's a good actor which is just as important. Can't wait!
vonstallin - 1/30/2011, 5:59 PM
since smallville isnt finished filming...I wonder how TOm W feels? will he act any better or less? done with the franchise? I wonder.

Daniellantern - 1/30/2011, 6:05 PM
Cavill was the best choice i think..
well, we will see the result. and i wish snyder and nolan will make a cameo of batman or other heroes from DC comic to make link for Justice League movie!
ManofSteel22 - 1/30/2011, 6:09 PM

marvel72 - 1/30/2011, 6:29 PM
@ leee777

no f*cking welling, this movie could be awesome now.
Akercocke - 1/30/2011, 6:29 PM
They won't be cgiing sh*t. Guys think about it, at 6'1 his secret identity as Clark is more credible. Honestly, at 6'4 and 240 pounds, anyone would be able to identify him, I mean, a pair of glasses and a nerdy attitude as a disguise are pretty lame. Remember, it's a Nolan project now.
LEEE777 - 1/30/2011, 6:47 PM
Exactly @ MARVEL72, exactly, the franchise would have turned into sh1t like Batman & Robin if he did had!

SMALLVILLES to [frick]ed up anyways.
airbeyonder18 - 1/30/2011, 7:03 PM
Now I feel absolutely safe. This franchise is going to be AWESOME!!!
mattattack - 1/30/2011, 7:10 PM

InFamouslyCool - 1/30/2011, 7:14 PM
i haven't seen the tudors, but i've seen the count of monte cristo.. this guy isn't some big award winning actor. not sure why everyone speaks sooooo highly of him.

him and matt bomer do look good together (superman batman)
ClarkKentSuperman - 1/30/2011, 7:18 PM
Lol No one believes me when I write this but u can wiki it. Back in the 70's they started sayin that the glasses Clark wears are mad with Kryptonian Glass from his ship and they cause the people looking at him to see him differently. That was y it was so hard for people to tell that the 2 man are one in the same

I LOVE SUPERMAN and cant wait for this movie.

I think that over all Marvel has a much deeper list of characters and story lines however I must admit that SUPERMAN and BATMAN are the coolest characters ever. I love the HULK and CAPTAIN AMERICA(dont understand y people say they dont like him whats not to like?) those finish off my top 4. I honestly LOVE nothing more then reading a great Batman or Superman story. I think that Superman and Batman alone can carry DC and they can keep putting out animated movies, books, graphic novels, real movies, merchandise and anything else of these characters and everyone will continue to buy it because they are amazing characters which leads me to my next piece.

I am so happy the movie is moving forward and glad to see they are changing the direction of the character and making him more modern and contemporary. Shedding the association of the past movies and hopefully Supermans son lol. I loved Routh but the kid and Singer not so much. Bottom line however I can watch the airplane scene a million times over and over again and get goose bumps everytime. That is the embodiment of SUPERMAN in a fast 2 min scene. Hopefully we will see more of that and less of the bullshit other stuff where Superman does nothing exciting. With that being said one thing I am honestly praying that I dont see is a SUPERMAN COSTUME CHANGE. THIS IS NOT NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His suit is as ICONIC as the character himself. It worked with Batman to a point because he changes his suit with certain amentities from time to time. Superman however IS the suit. I think even a slight change will really damage this franchise and upset allot of fans. This will be our GENERATIONS SUPERMAN movie and everyone knows we really need a GREAT ONE.

What this movie needs to make it great is a very short, if any at all, origin story(EVERYONE knows it by now...and I mean EVERYONE!!!). (2) Lex Luthor, maybe not as the main villain or main character but he needs a role. (3) A TOUGH villain. One that can challenge Superman physically. (4) An actual Fight Scene where Superman really goes at it with the bad guy(s). (5) Superman to have HIS SUIT not a variation of it!!!!

I really hope someone reads and I believe they do since Lee has been self promoting Cavill for the role for awhile now lol!!!!
TorturedXGenius - 1/30/2011, 7:24 PM
the title of this article should of just been "Superman Talks" lol...Henry Cavill IS Superman, Zack Snyder directing, Nolan producing, Goyer & Nolan(bro) writing.....the bad? 2 years away :(
EdGross - 1/30/2011, 7:36 PM
1 year, 11 months.
LEEE777 - 1/30/2011, 7:51 PM
1 year, 11 months ahhhh that'll soon fly by lol...

Look at Tron: Legacy!
spider1489 - 1/30/2011, 7:51 PM
i hope the new superman has long hair, i always like that style of superman,
Joe6Pack74 - 1/30/2011, 7:56 PM
I have no opinion on this so I post this.

Flop123 - 1/30/2011, 8:10 PM
@bronx - Totally agree with you as far as the costume goes. It HAS to remain virtually the same. I for one liked the Returns suite with the updated "S", just needed to be bigger, and have the yellow "S" on the cape. Other than that I thought it was pretty good.
BigChief16 - 1/30/2011, 8:15 PM
Dude's got the look. All I want to know now is if he is going to kick somebody's ass.
steelrocks - 1/30/2011, 8:27 PM
@BigChief16

steelrocks - 1/30/2011, 8:27 PM
omg that's so wrong for as it sounds like a joke and it [frick]ING ISNT
steelrocks - 1/30/2011, 8:27 PM
NO RED UNDERWEAR CAMPAIGN!!!!

superotherside - 1/30/2011, 8:32 PM

WhiteDragon66 - 1/30/2011, 8:36 PM
interesting now...... on to the villian casting
CapWriter - 1/30/2011, 8:38 PM
I like it. I've been a fan of this guys since the Count of Monte Cristo. I felt he stood up really well next to Jim Cavezeil.
blizzil - 1/30/2011, 8:41 PM
Superman must have an epic villain of pure awesome. Something that only we can see on film in 2011.

My vote is for this 3lb chihuahua below who wants to destroy earth.

LP4 - 1/30/2011, 9:17 PM
@Superguy- Yeah buddy! So far all our struggles for a PROPER REBOOT has come true! Ur my brother in arms (not to sound corny) same with BigChief, Knightstalker and Steelrocks30! Our dream Superman film is finally coming true!!!

LP4 - 1/30/2011, 9:26 PM
@BigChief16 & Steelrocks- I agree with u guys, we need to finally see Supes THROW A DAMN PUNCH. c'mon WB is it REALLY thay hard???!!!
Knightstalker - 1/30/2011, 9:56 PM
Question.....What is with these people that think Matt Bomer would make a great Superman. Don't get me wrong, White Collar is an outstanding program and I never miss an episode, but I just do NOT see him anywhere close to being Superman.
LP4 - 1/30/2011, 11:36 PM
@Intruder- Were you referring to ME? lOl =)

@Knightstalker- I agree about Bomer. I'm GLAD he didn't get it.
xXkryptoniteXx - 1/30/2011, 11:44 PM
Who gives a [frick] about his height, it just shows more that he can fight a bugger opponent and whoop his ass, just don't cast a tall lois lane or lex
xXkryptoniteXx - 1/30/2011, 11:47 PM
