JJ Abrams About Rebooting Superman

He was able to bring back Star Trek, will he do the same for Superman?
Recently Abrams stated that he wasn't going to direct Mission Impossible 4. when asked if he would like to reboot the Superman franchise, he had this to say:

"No one has talked to me about it," said Abrams. "Writing that script was a long process. It was a very passionate character for me. As a kid growing up it meant a lot to me. It would be wonderful and fun to see that brought back. I don't know what Warners is thinking or what their plan is. It would be a blast."

This is not totally out of the blue. Abrams once stated that he wrote a draft of the script for Superman. The only problem was that it was rejected.

But it sounds like he isn't against rebooting the franchise. And he sounds passionate to the point that he might actually pay attention to the comics. Unlike many other directors that "go their own way" with it. This is good news but Warner Bros. is still taking its sweet time bringing it back.

The last we heard director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) was in talks to reboot the franchise and comic book writer Mark Millar (Wanted) revealed that Warners contacted him regarding some Superman project.

So what do you think? Will Abrams bring back the man of steel? Would he be able to bring it back the way it should have been in Superman Returns? Would Warner Bros. give him a shot even though he was already rejected once? Would James McTeigue be better to direct it? Discuss it all and more below.

I like Abrams. The only time I felt let down on something of his was Cloverfield.
Bamf7 - 10/29/2009, 2:41 PM
He's a great choice for the reboot.

He's a sci-fi geek himself, and knows how to direct epic space action, humor, and faithful performances as well.

He's in my top 3 directors for the reboot, the other 2 being Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson.

I like Abrams. I wouldn't be totally opposed to him. However, I hope he would have a better script this time around. In his first one, Krypton wasn't destroyed and Lex was Kryptonian, for God's sake!
Geek4Life - 10/29/2009, 4:02 PM
You've got to be kidding me.
There's going to be a Mission Impossible 4!
bubastis237 - 10/29/2009, 4:16 PM

teabag - 10/29/2009, 4:19 PM
i like jj abrams and im even a HUGE cloverfield fan! but i don't know about him being right for this.
CorndogBurglar - 10/29/2009, 4:22 PM
Yes please. I think he'd do a great job...if he doesn't use that last script. That was a bit off center in my opinion.
ecksmanfan - 10/29/2009, 4:27 PM
@Teabag- Ohhhhhh it says sex lol!

I didnt get it at first.

I think Abrams would be amazing for Superman. He really brought back Star Trek in an awesome way and he could bring this one back well too.

@Geek4Life-wouldnt that totally destroy the whole "last son of Krypton" thing.

It would be an interesting take on it though. very original
BatmanKnight - 10/29/2009, 4:28 PM
Yeah, he should leave the script to a traditional screenplay writer, and I would be happy if Mark Miller made some contributions and was a consultant on the movie, just not him as the big head writer.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/29/2009, 4:30 PM
James McTeigue would probably be a good choice, but I think JJ Abrams would be the better choice. I feel like that he would do it more justice like what he did with Star Trek. I also think he's a person who understands the source material.
Bandrews1 - 10/29/2009, 4:31 PM
My first choice for the reboot!
tea-LOL!
NightAvenger4 - 10/29/2009, 4:32 PM
Maybe get Geoff Johns to do the script
and have JJ direct and produce! He's a
damm fine director! Knows how to set up
a Sci-fi action shot!
DDD - 10/29/2009, 4:50 PM
Geoff Johns would be a fantastic addition to the Superman writing team! Hell, he'd be a fantastic addition to any CBM writing team, especially the Flash and Green Lantern!
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/29/2009, 4:56 PM
its petition time!!!!!!!!!!!! quick lets make one, I have been dying to hear him say this. we have to do something FAST (that's fast with CAPS ON and 15 exclamatory marks)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Misterfan - 10/29/2009, 5:15 PM
If they had johns writing and jj directing I would actually have faith in a supes movie again! Any thing johns touches is gold and jj did great with star trek. If they do a supes movie though they need to do it with darkseid! Or how ever the hell that a**hat spells his name lol
comicboyV1 - 10/29/2009, 5:16 PM
A Johns/Abrams collaboration on a Superman movie would be a force to be reckoned with for sure :)

comcboy: IMO what they need to do is bring in Brainiac and build up to a Darkseid centered Justice League film! ;)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/29/2009, 5:20 PM
Not a bad idea I just really wanna see dc get there s**t together and do some good movies. I love dc comics but as far as movies they are sub par with only a few exeptions
comicboyV1 - 10/29/2009, 5:30 PM
Superman does not need a reboot. Just have a new villian next movie. He has other ones then Lex Luthor.
Michael Galusick - 10/29/2009, 5:38 PM
MI:III, Cloverfield and Star Trek were all amazing so this would be a great project for Abrams! Though he's still a great choice to direct 'The Avengers'!
joshw24 - 10/29/2009, 5:41 PM
comicboy: Amen brother. They need to get it into high gear, they have all the resources and characters to do so, GET TO IT!

Josh: I personally didn't care for Cloverfield, but Abrams was only a producer on that, so I don't put the full blame on him.

Though MI 3 was great, and Star Trek '09 was simply amazing, so I'm all for an Abrams directed Superman flick!
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/29/2009, 5:43 PM
I am all for JJ to be Producer, Director or heck Writer just to get a Sups story that can jump start the franchise. He can do it, I have every faith in him.
JYCowboy - 10/29/2009, 6:09 PM
i have complete faith hed give it the kick up the arse it need, maybe even have him fight cloverfield...............or maybe not.

but to be honest as long as it does not screw up plans for a dark tower addaption , id be well excited bout it.
Rolanddeschain19 - 10/29/2009, 7:05 PM
alex proyas or frickin wachowski bros!!!
Anil Rickly - 10/29/2009, 7:13 PM
I'm more for Abrams well over McTeigue. I was a little put off from the way McTeigue saw the character. But I'm curious as to what Abrams vision is for the character. Will he deviate? If he brought Johns on as writer, I'd be sold.
Phinehas - 10/29/2009, 7:26 PM
SAID IT B4...JUST MAKE THE DAMN MOVIE,STUDIOS PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND.
GUNSMITH - 10/29/2009, 7:28 PM
I did'nt realize that JJ produced Cloverfield. I did not see it in the theater and bought the DVD when it was released. Still in the cellophane...

They ought to reboot Superman but enough with the origin story. I would still like to see the Superman vs Batman movie.
Number21 - 10/29/2009, 8:36 PM
I think Richard Donner should direct the next Superman!

Superman4 - 10/29/2009, 8:37 PM
Donner makes a lot of sense, too bad hollywood is full of nonsense. I think he could pull it off with a contemporary spin on it. I know at least he would continue to use Routh which is a good thing.
ASSASSIN666 - 10/29/2009, 9:19 PM
@ tyler

jj was a producer on cloverfield, but he was also heavily involved in everything that happened. it was HIS vision and idea from the get go. he was in a toy store in japan with his son, and they had a bunch of godzilla toys, so he wanted to make a good american "giant monster" movie. i'd say he should get a whole LOT of the blame. but then again, i loved cloverfield, so i'm not compaining one single bit.

I've read the script he was talking about, it wasn't too bad, it's more no-holds-barred then what we've seen. A bit of a throw back to Superman II in a way and I think there was a scene when someone called Clark a dick.

you can go here to read it;

http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Superman%28JJAbrams%29.pdf

As you can see it's a pdf file.

Singer's wasn't a bad film but if the want is more action, I think his script is a decent direction to go in.
WeaponX - 10/29/2009, 10:50 PM
Abrams rocks!
ReikoLJ - 10/30/2009, 1:58 AM
Watchtower31: nice bit of news!

WB should go with Mark Millar's 3 Film trilogy idea! ;)

BigNick - 10/30/2009, 4:32 AM
One thing I can never understand is why they dont get a muscular guy to play supes, in every comic he is cut up and muscular, but in the movies he is just "athletic".
blee947 - 10/30/2009, 11:14 AM
@ blee

youre right! routh was a good superman, but he was way too skinny looking. supes should be ripped. to quote RDJ in tropic thunder, "he's more shredded than a Julien's Salad, man."
CorndogBurglar - 10/30/2009, 11:18 AM
Crap! Now you've done it! Leee777 is going to blast you with that pic of Routh working out. I think he has a man-crush.
Phinehas - 10/30/2009, 12:00 PM
If JJ writes this, then I'm gonna see it. I HATE SUPERMAN! But if JJ writes this, I'm not missing it.
JJMeylar - 10/30/2009, 12:10 PM
I'm with you JJMeyler.

I Like SuperMan in the Cartoons and Animated Moives (Most of them) But I CAN'T STAND SUPERMAN in the Live Action Movies.

He's just looks TOO WEAK in these movies. It has me wishing that he could loose his power so that Batman can just WHOOP HIS A%% and be done with it (I'm trying not to cuss)

But If JJ can do it and do it RIGHT, and tell the story the Right Way, and have him actually FIGHT A VILLAIN then that would be so Wonderful...even if Lex is brought back again....Don't care....just give Superman someone to go toe to toe with to make me actually WACTH another SuperMan Movie.

I didn't see the last one and I'm SO glad that I didn't waste my Time and Money. I didn't even RENT the movie... I just Looked at him and said No Thanks.

Hopefully...JJ will make a Good one cus other then Batman...Marvel ahs been on the Money for the most part.

(their 3rd sequels have Sucked)

NubaX - 10/30/2009, 4:06 PM
Superman Returns deserves a sequel. I want to see Brandon Routh's Superman beat the hell out of Kevin Spacey's Lex Luther.
Torian Brown - 10/30/2009, 9:36 PM
@Torian: Superman Returns may deserve it, IMO not, but the fact is the studio has dropped the Donner/Singer continuity like a hot potato. I am a Routh hold out myself, I liked the guy. I hope he gets another shot at the tights, but if DC/WB is going for a reboot he is more than likely out of the running for whatever Superman movies we see from here on out.
nerosday - 10/30/2009, 10:32 PM
@ nerosday

i didn't like superman returns, it was well made movie, and even had a good story, but it wasn't a CBM really. it was a love story with a superhero. it probably should have been called "My Super Ex-Boyfriend". lol.

having said that, i think the best way to go would be to do a sequel and do it right, just move on. have brainiac as the villain. i don't know if i can handle another superman origin story. i mean who doesn't know superman's origin? and if they HAVE to do a reboot and HAVE to show his origin, then do it during the beginning credits, or in flashbacks.
CorndogBurglar - 10/31/2009, 7:45 AM
I just finished issue #2 of Geoff Johns' "Superman: Secret Origins". Its funny how close they made young Clark Kent look like Christopher Reeve. Superman Returns was an insult to a casual Superman fan. The visuals were well made. Spacey's rendition of a darker version of Gene Hackman's Luthor was good. But the story was stupid for such an epic character as Superman. If it were Ghost Rider or Catwoman, I'd care less. But there were too many inconsistencies. I think Routh is a horrible actor. He has no commanding presence as Superman. Lame.
I'm not outright opposed to a reboot. But it is evident that general concensus is opposed to an entire overhaul of Supes' origin. I would, however, do flashbacks to his past as anchor of guidance for him to reflect upon. Such as, having him consider his training from both his bio-father Jor-El, as well as the moral guidance his adopted parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent provided when he is faced with compromising situations.
Phinehas - 10/31/2009, 12:13 PM
Singer kill Superman for 10 or 15 years, forget Superman.
OSCURO - 10/31/2009, 4:38 PM
I think superman returns was supposed to be a closing chapter for that superman. Whether or not they reboot has no bearing on the previous superman franchise.

I would probably begrudgingly like a superman from JJ Abrams. I say begrudgingly because although I do think his work is good, I hate the fact that he basically made millions off a fan-fiction of star trek.
