30 Days Of Night 2 Shooting In October

30 Days Of Night sequel is shooting in Vancouver this October with a new cast and new idea...

It's been two years since the sequel to 30 Days of Night was announced. So they've definitely taken their sweet time getting everything done right(hopefully). So just as everyone is forgetting about the movie, yesterday it was confirmed that it is still happening and that it will start filming this October in Vancouver,Ca.

The main character Stella Olsen will return, but sadly Mellisa George will not. This time instead of one of the few survivors of an Alaskan town suddenly attacked by a ravenous horde of bloodthirsty vampires, she’s actually one in a group of vampire hunters. They’re out for revenge. The story was written by Steve Niles and Ben Ketai, who also wrote two 30 Days of Night webseries. Ketai is also directing.

No news yet if this will be a theatrical release or a direct to DVD, but usually when the main cast isn't returning studios would rather release them as direct to DVD to not risk being such a failure. Plus its being written by a guys that have only made a webseries. I’m not sure about a 30 Days of Night spin-off about hunting vampires. The first one was about ordinary people in shitty circumstances, not a bunch of wannabe Buffys and Blades. That’s been done A LOT. Maybe the sequel is better off on bottom shelf DVD. If Hartnett isn't on this one, i might go see it in theaters!

i liked the graphic novels and liked the movie also. which is weird, because i don't usually like vampire stories that just make them out to be inhuman monsters / animals. the novel gave them a LITTLE more humanity, i mean they could actually talk in those, lol. but the movie screwed up a pretty important part, which is the fact that Barlow, the leader of them in the first novel, did not like the idea of what the other vampires were doing. in fact, he killed the vamp that organized it, and was totally pissed off because it was wreckless and could possibly put them into the eyes of the public, when the vamps have been spending generations trying to hide. that was completely left out of the movie. and oh yeah, the vampire hunter lady and her son in new orleans were left out too, which is weird, because the hunter lady plays a HUGE part in the second graphic novel. i still liked the movie though, which is weird, considering those important changes

and oh yeah, if it follows the graphic novel at all, the sequel won't have hartnet in it until the very end...

they didn't only write the web series, they wrote all 7 or 8 of the graphic novels. if anyone can get it right, it should be them. plus, vampire hunters were present, even in the original graphic novel, they just left that out of the movie.

They should have skipped ahead to Return to Barrow, that;s an awesome book.

Two years since the sequel was announced ???

I thought 30 DAYS only come out last year lol???

Cool article though, cant wait for the sequel although i hope its better than the first one, put more of the comic book in it!

I love the comics and even though they left some stuff out I still own and love the movie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Steve Niles wrote the adaptation for the screen too. If Steve Niles is involved, it can't be all bad considering he is the creator of the characters and the original writer of all the comics/graphic novels that these characters were in. Btw, I met Steve at WizardWorldCon Chicago '03. He was incredibly humble and super-nice. In short, if he's writing it, I'm watching it.

Cool. I liked the first movie a lot so this should be good... as long as its theatrical release. Direct to DVD means poor film quality and even worse acting/ directing.

OK, since no one else here is apparently aware, the first movie(from the perspective of someone FROM Alaska), was a freakin' laugh riot it was so ridiculous all the things that were wrong. From the reaction of the audience up here, you would have thought it was a comedy. Still have a hard time not giggling remembering "Brrrr.. It must be ten below out here." At ten below in the middle of winter, residents of Barrow would be considering wearing shorts and t-shirts. We'll ignore the ludicrous transition from normal twelve hour day to total dark for a month, understandable hollywood theatrics. Never mind that Barrow does NOT shut down during the winter for a bit of darkness, Really people, planes CAN fly, land and take off in the dark and cold. Then came the absolute kicker, The freaking Pipeline's northernmost end is 120 miles SOUTHEAST of Barrow. No offense to those who liked the movie(a few good sequences) but SO much SO wrong about the setting it was only viewable as a comedy for me.

But the winner of the most moronic movie moment regarding Alaska still goes to On Deadly Ground with Steven Segal, where the native alaskan heroine says "Of course I know how to ride a horse, I'm Native American!"

I was one of those guys who'd never heard of 30 Days of Night until the movie came out. I eventually picked up the books and loved them, but honestly the persons work that appeals to me is Ben Templesmith's. I think his writing and art is amazing and I feel he wrote the best of the books "Red Snow." For me Steve Niles being involved isn't exactly a seal of quality but it might be for others. I say when I look at what the two have done since Simmon Dark vs. Wormwood, Welcome to Hoxford, and Groom Lake my money is still with Templesmith.

Second movie could be good or disaster, it seems really easy to make a terrible movie now a days.

BTW to the questions about why is it called 30 Days of Night if they aren't in Alaska, it's just what the series continued to be called despite the lack of relevance. The majority of the series is not in Alaska, that's why you should always plan ahead.

The 30DON horror.net series looked good, but the writing wasn't super impressive. Potential lost, I thought. They may have been pretty limited though, so who knows.

From what I've read, hartnett and the rest will NOT be returning. And why do they need to? A different story with the same breed of vampires would be just as interesting.

The first movie did one thing really well, and that was their vampires. Those things were great. If they got together a half decent script, another go could be fun. I'm agreeing with the orignal poster that this will most likely be a DVD only release.

Oh, also - I loved the guy in the beard in the first movie, Hagrid? He was great. Wish he would have been the main character. No offence to Hartnet, but why does the good looking young guy always have to be the hero. Lets get some guys like the Hagrid guy to last till the end for once!

Awesomeness.

The whole Alaska thing aside... I loved how they portrayed Vamps there. Instead of being emo with sparkling bodies or aristocrats, they are presented as visceral, beast-like creatures.

Judging by most of the comments on this article...I'm in the minority of people who thinks that "30 Days of Night" is a great film and that Josh Hartnett is a talented actor.
I've never read the GN but the film was great, I'll check out the GN someday.
To some of the people saying they hope Hartnett isn't involved...why would he be? He was basically turned to ash at the end of the first film.

I wouldn't mind a sequel but I think "30 Days of Night" is good on it's own, they don't really need a sequel. It'll probably end up being straight-to-dvd...as some of you have stated.

I loved the first movie, and thought that Hartnett did a GREAT JOB! He played the everyday hero quite well. He came off as someone who didn't WANT to be the hero, but was far from a puss too. The movie also made the vampires scary. This sounds like shit. I don't think it even follows the comics anymore does it? I would MUCH RATHER a prequel about how the vampires came to be. They didn't have much of a back story, and I thought they were fascinating!

A prequel would be cool, I'd like to see how Ben Foster's character ended up being the Vampires' bitch.

Hartnett would come back b/c he gets ressurrected(?) by Stella later in the series....and the first thing he does is turn her.Loved the books, thought the movie was better than most vampire movies out now (f##king Twilight..), and I'll go see it. JUST NO DIRECT TO DVD!! PUT IN AN EFFORT!!

Tonydark, while I actually think the film was fairly well done from a vampires perspective, the fact that almost every single thing about Alaska, they got horribly, horribly wrong was pretty hard to ignore.

Well at least you know that Hartnett wont be in this one (unless vampires can walk around extra crispy) I say they make a movie off the book "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" lol
