The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

That star-shaped head is just weirding me out... in a good way.
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 7:32 PM
ok i cant wait for this movie but one thing is definately bugging me...
dwarves are smaller than men and bigger than hobbits.
so how is plopping full sized men in dwarve clothing on ponies supposed to make them look more like dwarves?
shouldnt it be smaller sized men in dwarf costumes on ponys? or regular sized horses?
they just look too big for the mounts they ride.
or maybe its just me.

cannot wait for this movie regardless my pic for best film of 2012 hands down!
Godzillafart - 12/22/2011, 7:35 PM
I wish Jackson had an editor that was by his side to say "Pete, everything has been great, but this idea is shit...it will really lower the quality of your film. don't do it this way"

All his 3.5 star movies would become 5 star if this person existed.
Deadpoolican - 12/22/2011, 7:36 PM
omg that hair style is suck bogus, dwarves cant fix hair the same way elves do
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 7:36 PM
unless of course they are supposed to be dwarf ponys asuming there are regular size horses ponys and then dwarf size ponies roaming middle earth?
shouldnt they resemble full size men on horsies? but be in fact dwarves on ponies?

lol horsies! i just said ponies more than any man ever should.
Deadpoolican - 12/22/2011, 7:36 PM
such

karloshuddos - 12/22/2011, 7:38 PM
@sansclaymore In TLORT trilogy Peter Jackson used Forced Perspective a lot to avoid CGI to make Frodo smaller than Gandalf in various scenes, I would assume he'll do the same again for The Hobbit.
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 7:38 PM
please dont get me wrong it looks cool but dont they have like midg.. ahem little people in costumes as standins for the wee folk?
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 7:43 PM
@karlos obviously...
but this is the opposite of forced perspective. unless your saying he is going to shrink them down in post?while leaving the little bitty horsies the same size?

common sense in using forced perspective is to make the regular sized folk look smaller or larger in comparison to the others by using camera angles, in this case if he doesnt shrink them down in post and this is what we get than its exactly what it is, a regular sized man on a pony.
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 7:47 PM
i only say this because it looks this way in the trailer as well... maybe they explain it in pj's idea of middle earth. like i said in that first post, maybe ther are 3 kinds of horse sizes regular horses, ponies, and then even smaller dwarf ponies, like as if they bred them that way

whatever best movie of 2012 regardless and 2011 aint over yet !:)

GrayFox1025 - 12/22/2011, 9:04 PM
@sansClaymore

The reason why they look so "big" is that its just a photo. Once forced perspective is implemented, they will look smaller.

Look back to the beginning of Fellowship with Gandalf and Bilbo in Bilbo's house. That was two sets, 1 large for Bilbo to look small and 1 small to make Gandalf look large. Same idea.
CaptainAmerica - 12/22/2011, 9:05 PM
@Helllbound, ouch, is that good or bad?
kingmonkeyman - 12/22/2011, 9:58 PM
That bald dwarf is giving star head dwarf the evil eye. Do you think he's jealous of his eyebrow braids.
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 10:50 PM
@grayfox lol wow...hand on forehead

believe me,... i am well aware i work in the cgi field
i am a computer animator and have watched every extra feature from the lotr series as well as the extended cuts several times,it was required as part of my film degree, i know full well what forced perspective is. for example the scene specifically when frodo hops on the wagon with gandalf in the opening 10 minutes of fellowship.
i think both you and karloshuddos missed my overall point entirely assuming i dont know what kind of tricks of the trade may be used to have them look smaller on film more specifically the use of forced perspective photography.
filming actual midgets or extra tall "stand-ins" in a smaller or larger room like you mentioned is not forced perspective.
refer to the example i just gave about the wagon above both principle actors in the same shot using a modified wagon to fool the viewer into thinking frodo is really that small, is forced perspective.
i was just stating the obvious that the principle actors are both saddled up on a pair of (whatever those ponies are called) ponies and not horses thus losing the effect of their stature as dwarves, they may as well have been midget stand ins on the ponies or regular size men on horses made to look like ponies to get the right effect.

that is all i was saying lololol no hard feeling you just totally missed my point! im sure if any adjustments need to be made in post production good ol peter j will get er dun!
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 10:59 PM
BTW the use of larger and regular size versions of the hobbit sets to film the origional movies actualy coined the term "bigatures" as in the sets are not miniatures. one was regular size for bilbo and frodo and the other was extra small to make ian mckellen appear larger than the hobbits. its simple trick photography using alot of over the shoulder shots where you can only see one actors face at a time using alot of quick cutting. not forced perspective in that case. as gandalfs stand in is like 7 foot tall(they call him tall paul)was used extensively for when we were looking at frodo or bilbo while just the shoulder or robe of gandalf was visible.

ok no more ponies screw it theyre filming midgets lol
sansClaymore - 12/22/2011, 11:03 PM
i can get pretty intense sometimes precious, sorry if i seem insulting im not trying to be, i just get frustrated when i try to make a point that goes woooooop right over masters head and get comments that make it seem like im silly for asking. stupid fat hobbitses!. they'll see precious, they'll see!
Whitemartian - 12/22/2011, 11:16 PM
Quick thought about the star shaped hair: if they're still using some or all of Guillermo Del Toro's designs on this film (and I hope so because I'd love to see the Smaug design he was so proud of) then the star shaped design might be a subtle reference to the Elder Things from At the Mountains of Madness.

And I'm sure you meant "precocious" and not "precious" right? RIGHT?!
brewtownpsych - 12/23/2011, 12:45 AM
sansclaymore, are you really intruder? jk
Batman27 - 12/23/2011, 1:25 AM
The film will be just as good the lord of the rings
jj2112 - 12/23/2011, 2:56 AM
I'm tired of people who are complaining about this film even before it's released... If you think you can do better then raise the money to film it and let's see what the end result looks like... After what he did in LOTR Jackson could plant a real star on my head and you wouldn't hear me complain
marvel72 - 12/23/2011, 3:00 AM
this movie is gonna be great.
Gmoney84 - 12/23/2011, 6:28 AM
I think all of the dwarves look great. If it were a bunch of Gimli clones running around in this film I think most people would feel somewhat cheated. I love the concept behind the younger dwarves looking more human "man" looking and as they age they become more Gimli dwarf looking. Each dwarf has his own look which is impressive as well considering the design element. Weta never ceases to amaze!!
valeriesghost - 12/23/2011, 7:49 AM
I think the movie is gonna be great, but i'm not digging the hair, it just seems out of place in this world. But i guess you need to be able to individual dwarfs in the movie
Godzillafart - 12/23/2011, 8:31 AM
@jj2112: So...unless someone thinks he/she could do a better job, they shouldn't criticize a director? That makes absolutely no sense.

Just got done watching The Fellowship of the Ring. Great movie with three or four TERRIBLE scenes.

Do I think I could have made a better movie? Absolutely not.

Do I think Jackson's movie would have been better if those scenes were done differently? Absoultely.
Whitemartian - 12/23/2011, 8:34 AM
Also..those are horses made up to look like ponies.
sansClaymore - 12/23/2011, 9:40 AM
HORSIES!!! YAYYYY!!!
brewtownpsych - 12/23/2011, 9:40 AM
@G-fart, just curious, which scenes were TERRIBLE?
headlopper - 12/23/2011, 8:12 PM
I love that dwarfs hair. I'd wear mine that way just to fu** with people.
