Did Drew Pearce Reveal Joss Whedon as the Director of THE AVENGERS 3?

If a comment from screenwriter Drew Pearce during a recent interview is to be believed, Whedon might already be set to return for the third installment of THE AVENGERS, possibly as both a writer and director. Hit the jump for more.

During an interview with Movies.com in which he discusses Marvel’s creative process and the Easter Eggs hidden in his Iron Man 3 short, All Hail the King, Pearce casually mentions that Whedon is on board for Avengers 2 (which we know) and Avengers 3 (which we’ve only speculated about). Here’s the quote:

Movies.com: Will we see some aftermath of this short at some point, either in the cinematic universe or Netflix or any of the other crazy things Marvel is cooking up?

Drew Pearce: Honestly, it’s a question above my pay grade. One of the things when you’re a writer or director in the Marvel universe is you come in, you leave some tasty morsels dangling at the end, and maybe you’re the one who comes in and picks them up again next time, or maybe it’s someone else, or maybe they just hang there awhile and that’s fine too.

Despite any cliffhanger-ness to the short, I also don’t feel like it’s unsatisfying. That’s all you can really hope to do. Unless you’re Joss [Whedon] and you’re making Avengers 2 and 3, and then you have a pretty good idea if you’re making the next one or not.

Hard to tell until we get an official word one way or the other. It would certainly make sense to keep Whedon in house, if only for story consistency. The Avengers: Age of Ultron might already be too big to fail, so keeping Whedon involved is about as low a risk as you can take. Only time will tell.

I'm so surprised
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 2/24/2014, 7:15 PM
If this is true, he'll be the only director/writer to helm a full trilogy in the MCU.
marvel72 - 2/24/2014, 7:17 PM
i thought whedon was planning out avengers 3 already,if avengers age of ultron makes the same money as the avengers he'll be back.
npamusic - 2/24/2014, 7:18 PM
How is this "not news"? smh.
SpoonWielder - 2/24/2014, 7:20 PM
Hmm...I wonder if he'll actually take the job. Directing such a huge movie, that literally the whole world is watching and waiting for would be incredibly stressful.
Isra - 2/24/2014, 7:28 PM
He is the only one who knows how to make this work.
DrDoom - 2/24/2014, 7:32 PM
@ThefoulMatti

He said that he was intimidated by Iron Man 3 because of how good it was. Get out of here.

Regardless, this IS news, since they've never confirmed Whedon for a third film. Very excited to see what he brings to the table with Age of Ultron.
xfan320 - 2/24/2014, 7:34 PM
As long as Whedon commits to DR. HORRIBLE 2 first!!!

Maybe even theatrical release?? A boy can dream...lol
nuclearpriest - 2/24/2014, 7:35 PM
After RDJ signed on for Avengers 2 & 3 but no Iron Man sequels, I said that Avengers 2 & 3 were going to film simultaneously and I'm still betting I'm right. That would also go to explain why they are bringing in so many Avengers and I bet they're not done.
MrReese - 2/24/2014, 7:38 PM
Not really surprising.I'm pretty sure it's a given by now.
Destined - 2/24/2014, 7:43 PM
Kind of expected at this point.
Starfox - 2/24/2014, 7:43 PM
Makes sense

@ThefoulMatti

Josh Whedon has said he likes Iron Man 3.
batz11 - 2/24/2014, 7:47 PM
The general public loved IM3, few pissy fanboys means nothing to the bottom-line...
Comedian03 - 2/24/2014, 7:52 PM
As of right now, I wouldn't mind one bit if they brought in someone else for Avengers 3 as long as they're a competent director.

But I'll wait and see what he does with Avengers 2 before I say I really want him back for a 3rd or bring in someone else. Fingers crossed.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 2/24/2014, 7:52 PM
In fact, Whedon said Iron Man 3 was so great, and that it was so intimidating (This is around the time he first started drafting AOU), after seeing the third act, he was scared to finish A2...
sKeemAn - 2/24/2014, 8:06 PM
This was bound to happen.
JoeMomma29 - 2/24/2014, 8:12 PM
@ batz11

Wow me and Nomis are now considered pissy fanboys?????
DCMarvelFreshman - 2/24/2014, 8:22 PM
@NPaMusic ...SMH... This is not news because we're just assuming something that's been widely assumed; it's not confirmation in no way shape or form. No one has ever said or even implied that Whedon is not returning. If these comments were coming from Kevin Feige, then I guess I would understand. However, Whedon's current contract isn't even up yet, but it's still safe to assume he will renegotiate.
ATrueHero1987 - 2/24/2014, 8:34 PM
@nuclearpriest "I said that Avengers 2 & 3 were going to film simultaneously and I'm still betting I'm right" ....I'm afraid you're wrong.lol
GliderMan - 2/24/2014, 8:49 PM
This has been all but confirmed.. Whedon said he saving thanos for his "third act"

Kurne - 2/24/2014, 9:28 PM
Please, yes... Also, let Whedon have more input on the Phase Three scripts - he couldn't really do much on IM3 because that script was being written while he was filming Avengers, same with Thor - also, both films were being written before he signed on as Marvel's consultant. Give him a bigger deal, like, RDJ money.
ExSOLDIER - 2/24/2014, 9:58 PM
I think that was a done deal anyway. If it ain't broken, don't Fox it!
Alphadog - 2/24/2014, 11:47 PM
@GliderMan Joss Whedon never said that.
TheRealistStarLord - 2/24/2014, 11:57 PM
Not surprised at all..
mgeoff88 - 2/25/2014, 12:02 AM
I would be surprised if Joss Whedon didn't come back to direct The Avengers 3.
nikgrid - 2/25/2014, 2:24 AM
This is news? wtf?
batz11 - 2/25/2014, 4:08 AM
Joe, Haha, I'm one too...
DropAload - 2/25/2014, 4:25 AM
It's not news because DCMF didn't post it.
ProfessorX - 2/25/2014, 5:59 AM
What the [frick] is DCMarvelFreshman smoking? It's not news because "No one has ever said or even implied that Whedon is not returning"... What kind of backass logic is that?
