BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Soars To The Top (Again) At The U.S. Box Office

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel Studios obviously had more than '12% of a plan' venturing into the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and releasing the James Gunn helmed Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014. Guardians opened at #1, holding on to the top spot for a week. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened on August 8, knocking the Guardians to the #2 position.

After it's 18th day of release, Guardians of the Galaxy returned to it's former glory and reclaimed the #1 spot atop the U.S. box office with a take of $2.88 million ($2,884,902) on Monday, beating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which earned $2.80 million ($2,801,620).

Surely, the impressive critic and audience reception (92% and 95% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes) with strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings have helped the Guardians with this ascent to the top of the box office almost three weeks after it's release.

As of August 18, Guardians of the Galaxy stands at $226 million domestic and $196 million foreign (still to open in the large markets of China and Japan), for a total of $422 million. For comparison, Marvel Studio's Captain America: The Winter Soldier finished it's theatrical run with $260 million domestic and $714 million world-wide.

Quill: Ninja Turtle you better stop poking me

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opened in the United States on August 1, 2014.

No movie deserves it more

There's no keeping a good raccoon down

Oh joy, we can get more people raving about it instead of giving the actual great MCU movie (Winter Soldier) its proper due. God does this kind of shit piss me off.

Everybody on here all enjoyed and raved about CA:TWS----but it was what ,....MAY?

We can like both things can't we?
Maven - 8/20/2014, 5:47 AM
Wow.

[Almost] outgrossed every X-Men film but DOFP (should bypass Wolverine soon).
Doopie - 8/20/2014, 5:47 AM
yeah I remember TWS had people raving about it - some still are
Snotzo - 8/20/2014, 5:48 AM
lol is this really news. How about Amy Adams (newest Lois Lane) just turned 40.

Although I have seen her without make up and it's very telling.
ekrolo2 - 8/20/2014, 5:48 AM
@kevberg

Liking both is not the issue, this contingent of people calling Winter Soldier overrated and now saying its no where near as good as they originally thought just because its not as brightly colored, jokey and hollow as GotG is what pisses me off.
NovaCorpsFan - 8/20/2014, 5:50 AM
@ekrolo2
What? Cap TWS was May, it's [frick]ing August now. This movie is now the new thing, people have moved on from the brilliance of TWS and are now celebrating the brilliance of Guardians.
digymastr - 8/20/2014, 5:50 AM
@ekrolo2
Winter Soldier came out in April, it's August now. Time for Guardians to shine!
0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 5:51 AM
@Ekrolo

People were calling Winter SOldier the greatest CBM of all time when it came out, and that continued for at least 2 months. Go to any Winter Soldier article and you'll see more of the same. The movie got it's due and then some. Praising GOTG takes nothing away from TWS

These things aren't inversely related. We can (and do) like both
NovaCorpsFan - 8/20/2014, 5:51 AM
Oh wait, you're one of those, "If I laugh I hate the movie" kind of people. My mistake.
0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 5:52 AM
Damn, I must have missed all these GOTG threads where people backed away from their own praise of TWS in favor of GOTG

Probably because those threads don't exist

ekrolo2- "Oh joy, we can get more people raving about it instead of giving the actual great MCU movie (Winter Soldier) its proper due. God does this kind of shit piss me off."
everyone was praising the winter soldier when it came out just because everyone is praising GOTG doesn't mean they dont think TWS was a great movie. it's been a while since TWS came out so there is nothing wrong with everyone praising GOTG which come out 3 weeks ago.
ekrolo2 - 8/20/2014, 5:53 AM
@NovaCorpsFan

Id prefer a movie that can make me laugh and have a compelling story, which MCU gave me with Iron Man 1, First Avenger and Winter Soldier. Guardians is not one of those movies, its an alright movie that is only as enjoyable as it is because of all the jokes, structurally it has a lot of problems.
Doopie - 8/20/2014, 5:53 AM
lol - I enjoyed GotG which means I now don't like TWS. I just can't handle liking both at the same time
kinghulk - 8/20/2014, 5:53 AM
OmegaDaGod- well said
NovaCorpsFan - 8/20/2014, 5:53 AM
@ekrolo2
Well then, our opinions differ far too greatly for an argument to be worthwhile.
digymastr - 8/20/2014, 5:55 AM
@ekrolo2
Cool, it's great you've got an opinion. Although I acknowledge the film has some structural issues (saying and not showing some things), the overall feeling of the film makes me over look the issues that it has. A solid 8.5/10 for me.
Bekss - 8/20/2014, 5:57 AM
No one is calling WS overrated but trolls and I haven't see anyone do it
0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 5:59 AM
Bekss

Exactly. The only people calling TWS overrrated are the ones who were saying it when it first came out
Maxi91291 - 8/20/2014, 6:00 AM
What is this strawman shit ?

Still ... excellent news
ThePowerCosmic - 8/20/2014, 6:02 AM
I think sometimes people in this site think that if a film doesn't fit into their mold or formula of what a CBM should be there must be something wrong with it.

There are no structural problems with GotG. At least not anymore that any other CBMs if you want to nitpick the shit out of everything. If you don't like humor in CBMs then you just didn't like it, but let's not convince ourselves Marvel made a mistake. They took unknown characters and made them A listers in one 2hr film. One if the greatest Marvel films ever IMO.
Bekss - 8/20/2014, 6:03 AM
The first 5 minutes of GotG is one of the most emotional scenes in any CBM and there's people saying it didn't have any depth.
A raccoon has an Emotional, serious AND funny scene, a tree has one, a wrestler who no one thought could act has dramática scenes.

Not because the story has kind of generic it means the movie had no real meaning
nibs - 8/20/2014, 6:05 AM
Sweet. It won a Monday by $80,000.
Bekss - 8/20/2014, 6:05 AM
Dramatic* scenes

0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 6:06 AM
GOTG is just structured differently than most films OVERALL

It seeks to acheive it's goals via different methods than conventional films

People who had issues with the 'structure' should really read this

0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 6:07 AM
It's oddly similar to how Avengers worked thru it's plot, except it's introducing it's characters using this method rather than just blending preexisting characters
0megaDaGod - 8/20/2014, 6:07 AM
The humor is actually a tool used to define characters, not just make the audience chuckle
McNyagano - 8/20/2014, 6:07 AM
Well it deserves it. It was a great film in its own right but Cap 2 is still he best CBM this year imo.

lol @Doopie

@ekrolo2: I love TWS just as much as I ever have, I'm counting down the days till I get the blu-ray. Show me one example of someone saying they love it less because it's not the exact same movie as GotG. They're two completely different films which both happen to be unbelievably awesome in their own unique ways. As far as I'm concerned they're BOTH Marvel's best movie thus far.

@ThePowerCosmic

I didn't want to get too much into it because it would just end in a long rant but since you asked for it here goes 1) Ronan is just another Malekith, his whole motivation is to destroy Xandar because they did something really horrible to his forefathers.... and yet hes going around murdering people wily nilly and hes giving the Xandarians crap for being evil bastards, good on ya there dumb ass.

Sure hes an actual challenge which puts him above Malekith at least but his whole teenage emo thing of being pissed off at everyone like an annoying little [frick] tard of a 5 year old who hasn't gotten his candy not only made him painful to watch but also made me wonder who the [frick] would ever let this guy command anyone, let alone an entire ship. Lee Pace's overracting didn't help matters either.

2) Drax and Gamora's backstories needed to be expanded upon, Nebula tells her sister she hates her the least out of all her siblings even though Gamora is hyped up to be a total murderous bitch before this and the comic tie in which was supposed expand on this doesn't make a good case for why Nebula wouldn't hate her guts the MOST out of all their siblings.

Drax's backstory also confused me since hes supposed to be an alien, who lived with other aliens before becoming a lunatic and yet he doesn't understand metaphors at all? Not a big problem by any means but they could've shown a flashback to when he was good to make his some what reversion to that personality at the end even better.

3) The romance scenes were cringe worthy, you can debate the other stuff with me all you like, but not this one. Its another one of these "I'm a though chick with a hard ass background and I want to let you in but I can't because I'm a tough chick" shit which is cliche as [frick].

The scenes with them listening to the music on Knowhere and that shot of him "bravely" going out there in space to save here had that Desolation of Smaug shit where they lingered on it for far too long and it almost felt like a parody of shit romances, that might've been what Gunn was going for but nothing hes said or done is any indication of this.

4) Drax and Gamora again, this time its the fact that they're chumps! Gamora needs to get saved by everyone and can't even beat Nebula in a sword fight without Star Lord helping her and Drax gets his ass completely beaten by Ronan.

5) It makes Thanos look like an idiot. Not only can this guy not control anybody working under him, in 11 movies he has completely failed to get any of the Infinity Stones and has lost almost everyone whose worked under him minus Nebula. Why the [frick] is this guy the "end boss of MCU"? [frick]ing Alexander Pierce is a better schemer then him.

So no, this isn't a thing where I dislike shit because its not like DUR CLASSIICCZZZ FROM DUR 60s! like some purist douche bag, I don't give a rats ass how faithful you are to the comics, if I want a comic I'll go read a comic, if I want something that's a new spin on shit I'll go watch the movies.
