Venom Movie has Writers!

Sony has decided to officially go with a Venom spin-off movie. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (the writing team for "Zombieland") are set to write the script according to SciFi Wire. The writers claim that they are under strict orders of secrecy.
The writers also say that they are big fans of Venom (Sam Raimi said from the beginning that he wasn't). They've been doing research recently to make sure they get it right.

"We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts," Reese said. "We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job."
They also understand that there is a bit of pressure. Venom has some serious fans. They're going to have high expectations. A lot of people weren't happy with how he came out in Spider-Man 3.

Since they are keeping things secret for now, there's no word on the plot or whether this is a direct spin-off from Spider-Man 3. Venom apparently died in that movie. We'll have to wait and see whether or not his story will continue from there or if they'll just re-boot his character.

Which direction do you think they should go? Can Venom hold his own movie? Who should he be going up against (we can assume Spidey won't be involved). Should Topher Grace reprise the role or should someone new take over? Do you want to see a Venom movie?

What i think: as for topher grace, i think an easy way to reboot the venom character while staying canon to the films.. is to recast venom with someone playing eddie brock sr. I mean i dont recall eddie brock adding jr to his name in the comics, but he did every time in spider-man 3... so why not have his father, played by someone a bit bulkier such as kurt russell, return to take vengeance for his fallen son.

a lot of people point out how dr. connors still has a piece of the symbiote, so eddie can steal it from him. as for spider-man appearing, it would be good to have a smaller supporting role by spidey.. though anymore than that and it might as well be another spider-man movie. im not sure if tobey mcguire would do anything less than lead role, but it would be a nice thought.

the only storyline i can derive with more venom and less spidey would be if carnage were the villian. and that would be something id be afraid to see them tampering with...

I like the idea of a Venom movie... but Kurt Russell??? I know it's just a thought you threw out there & nothing official... I just think that Kurt would be a bad fit IMO....

Also, don't know how he would find out about the peice left over... Dr. Connors & Eddie had no interaction in the movie at all...

But I like the idea of a Venom movie...Could be pretty cool...
Pumchavas28 - 4/9/2009, 2:57 PM
It is easy to bring him back, that is if they do a sligh tie in. For Spider-man 4 have Scorpion aka Mac Gargan get defeated fairly easily in the beginning. For the VENOM movie have the symbiote attach it self to him creating a new Venom, just like in the comic books. Of course in the comic books the Mob and other characters are working to get the symbiote parasite to meet with Gargan but it can be done.

I think its a very possible idea. Anyone else?
VenomIsOnMyRibs - 4/9/2009, 3:10 PM
i think a venom movie will work but it has to be really well done not any of that spiderman 3 crap
tyko450 - 4/9/2009, 3:20 PM
NO NO NO to the HORRIBLE Max Gargan Venom! Seriously, who would want to watch that crap? The REAL Venom as Eddie Brock from the late 80's-early 90's was an awesome character.

Here's what to do: REBOOT HIM! They could make it excellent if they started over from scratch and do a new mini-origin like "Punisher: Warzone" and "The Incredible Hulk" did.

Please, do not F this up again. And use his appearances from 'The Amazing Spider-Man' issues 300-375 as references for him. Those appearances (I think he had 5-6 storylines during that stretch) were when he was the best.
MetalHead - 4/9/2009, 3:25 PM
I like Venom as much a the next person & it would do great amongest people like us who like anime, comics & such. But other than I don't think it would be that great. Look what happen to Watchmen it just made $105,346,566 over the weekend. {Yahoo movies} You Say Kurt Russell, Ummh? Kurt Who!!!1
Spock - 4/9/2009, 3:39 PM
Kurt maybe old but he has delivered some of the most revered characters there is. He gave us Jack Burton, Snake Pliskin and Stunt Man Mike. The former is the best.
SirPrize - 4/9/2009, 3:55 PM
MAYBE THEY SHOULD LEAVE THIS ONE ALONE.
GUNSMITH - 4/9/2009, 4:12 PM
Told ya lol! Anyway this would be a great movie but an AWESOME movie if they wen't with R RATED!!!! Could have a CARNAGE cameo at the end even!!! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/9/2009, 4:13 PM
P.s. This don't need SPIDEY in!!! That storys done!!! Anyone that don't think VENOM won't be a friggin' cool movie! You need help!! : D
LEEE777 - 4/9/2009, 4:17 PM
Yeah, well why not have Jack Nickelson play him by that logic? Not to knock him but Kurt Russell is too old for the role. I have thought about this for years (way prior to ANY "Spider-Man" films coming out) and I have no idea who could pull it off. I do know, however, that Topher Grace was in my bottom percentile of choices.

If I had to make a criteria for who to choose I'd say for starters it HAS to be someone who's jacked. Then I'd say that a younger up-and-coming actor who would be able to draw the younger audience would probably be best, too. Then I'd say that he has to be someone who can pull off looking badass AND like someone with a good heart all at once. That aspect of Eddie Brock was in my opinion why he was able to create such a huge fanbase. He wasn't just a guy killing or stealing, he only broke laws that kept him from getting to Spider-Man.

I'll admit that I don't know many newer actors. I don't watch many popular TV shows so I can't throw any names out there. I am pretty sure, though, that this part of making him a success would be necessary. And I can't think of any current big-name actors who would be right anyway.

So someone throw some ideas out there.
MetalHead - 4/9/2009, 4:19 PM
punisher warzone was horrible but i think it ll be good...as long as they build up the character, make the crowd love "the guy" and when he turns into venom they ll love him as well...writing villains as heroes is tough...take catwoman and punisher warzone....well punisher is an anti hero but still.those were over the top horrible movies while ghost rider and the punisher, again anti heroes i know, are two of my favorite movies
lee mitchell - 4/9/2009, 4:41 PM
This movie is not going to happen, so stop talking about it. Venom is not an anti hero. It would not work. Get it out of your brains. This conversation is beyond stupid.

You cant have Venom without Spider-man. Whats going to happen? Venom leaves NYC and begins a new life in another city??? Come on. Its over. They ruined the character in spiderman 3. They had one shot and stupid pussy, Sam Raimi, blew it.
DarkAvengers - 4/9/2009, 4:44 PM
If they do this film they do need to recast the character. I suggest Dominic Purcell from "Prison Break". Topher Grace just wasn't right for the role. As for his adversary; Carnage!!! Only thing though is that the film will have to be rated R.
ladsonb190 - 4/9/2009, 4:51 PM
I just looked at Dominic Purcell and I don't dislike it. I'd need to see more options before I stamp him with my approval but so far he's better than anything I've come up with and he looks like he might be a good option. He definitely looks like someone who could play the good guy & bad guy role all at once. He looks like he could be mean and yet not mean at the same time. You might be on to something.
MetalHead - 4/9/2009, 4:58 PM
They should do a Bride Of Venom movie!

If this movie gets made i guarantee you that they will not reboot Eddie Brock, nor will they use Scorpion or any other character that has ever bonded with the symbiote in the comics..they will make up and new character and either have him as an antihero or make it a Wolfman type transformation type thing..a Jekyl and Hyde story.

Either way there is a very strong possibility that it will suck ass

Darkavengers, in the comics Venom was ALWAYS an anti hero..he hated Spidey with a passion and wanted him dead, but both Brock and the Symbiote never hurt innocents and actually protected the public when they could.

Rorschach01 - 4/9/2009, 4:59 PM
I just hope that do justice by Venom, because Spider-man 3 just pissed me off. He is my favorite Spider-man villain. I think a fresh start would be better. It can show how he became Venom.
dbzfan - 4/9/2009, 5:03 PM
The problem is that they CAN'T correctly show how he became Venom WITHOUT including Spider-Man. Spider-Man had way too much to do with him and his origin to be left out. I really don't know how they could pull that off. IF they're gonna do it they may just need to leave his origin out.
MetalHead - 4/9/2009, 5:10 PM
its gona suck! you know why? cuz sony is producing it! and u know its gona be a watered down pg-13 movie so i am definitely not looking forward to watching a crappy movie about one of the sickest characters!
HopOff718 - 4/9/2009, 5:31 PM
As long as they make Venom the cool anti-hero he is in the comics it will be awsome. A little like a mix of Wolverine and Sandman in Spidey 3. They just need a bigger and grittier guy to play him. Not another Tobey knockoff.
ScrewdUp - 4/9/2009, 5:54 PM
Interesting... How about no.
adamant877 - 4/9/2009, 6:08 PM
Come on, they blew it in sm3. They took one of the top 5 all time spiderman villans of all time imho and made him into eye candy. What made venom great was the psychological damage he did to pete and mj. I mean come on pete stopped wearing the black costume because it freaked mj out to much. So what did they do in the move, make him a metro fag with too much product in his hair. With a build like a 10 year old girl instead of arnold, which is how he was portrayed in the books. And for those who don't know the only reason venom is stronger then spidy is because eddie is strongeg then peter. Eddie became a weight lifter to deal with the depression on loosing his job because of spidey. Frick you sam rami and the script writers you ruined it you ruined it. Boo hoo ann no spin off is going to make it better boo hoo hoo
Anyway
Nick cage for eddie brock sr
darthstern - 4/9/2009, 6:10 PM
I've already given my opinion in another thread on how Venom could be brought back, though, I didn't think about the Jr./Sr. part. That could work very well, considering it would give the character more reason to hat Spidey.

There has to be some connection with Spidey, even if it's only by reference. I don't like the idea of a reboot on this character, because he is tied so closely with Spidey, in fact that's his origin, and to do a reboot with this character, in my opinion, would require rebooting spidey as well.

I still stick with my idea that Marvel, the masters of resurecting v=characters, could bring back the same character (even the same actor), and make a great film. And I feel that Spidey 3 would, in this case, serve as a decent character introduction/origin. But this is a very good idea as well. As to villians, Carnage gets his start in spidey. This is an issue where I think the writers really need to look to the comics. It's a tag team story with Spidey and Venom, and should be done that way, no exceptions. However, a Punisher like storyline would do well. In Venoms own series he was either escaping evil scientists that wanted to abuse the power of the symbiote, or hunting down those who preyed on the "innocent". But I think pitting him against another symbiote, it's way too early for that.
Apoc4all - 4/9/2009, 6:32 PM
Lets face the facts, Eddie brock's portrayel in SM3 SUCKED, acting wise, screen time wise, and fight scene wise.

The Mac Gargon story WOULD make more sense after that atrosity of a movie, I mean Eddie IS confirmed dead, so who else is the symbiot going to go onto? Eddies' twin Edward?

TheSoulEater - 4/9/2009, 6:40 PM
return to take vengeance for his fallen son?

we could not mess the story up enough in spiderman 3 so we will finish the job in the venom movie.
grif - 4/9/2009, 6:41 PM
Sorry to be so blunt here but anyone who thinks they can bring back Topher Grace as Venom has no clue what they're talking about. HE ruined Venom, along with the writing. And forget about Max Gargan-- that was NOT VENOM! It was an absolutely STUPID idea.

And sorry but I'm not seeing Nick Cage as Venom at all. He doesn't look a thing like Eddie Brock. Darthstern, your description of why Venom is stronger than Spider-Man is a bit inaccurate. Eddie is not stronger than Peter. Peter has super-human strength. Eddie has ridiculous strength but he is not stronger than Peter. The reason he is stronger is because of the symbiote's strength.

I used to be the biggest Venom fan alive. I still have every comic he ever appeared in (even if it was just one page) up until the mid-90's. The reason I mention this is that the more I think about it, the more I just wish that they'd leave it alone. They ruined their chance in "Spider-Man 3." When I think back of all of the Venom storylines in the first 10 years of his existence I can't think of one that they should use for this movie-- without including Spider-Man, that is. So with that being said, anything that they do would be YET ANOTHER made up story or something that is nowhere close to how "it really happened" and would be yet another disapointment. Just let it go. Or wait til "Spider-Man 9" and reboot him.
MetalHead - 4/9/2009, 6:46 PM
Rorschach01, true, but you and i both know that they would not b able to pull this off. He was all about protecting the innocents, but his obsession, first and foremost, was finding Spiderman, killing him or joining with him again. The symbiote was always all about spiderman. I'm a Venom expert. I know what i'm talking about. They would never use Mac, because they would have to go into other things too. They CANNOT make this movie. It would be exactly like when they remade Catwoman with Halle Berry. And we all remember how that went, dont we?
DarkAvengers - 4/9/2009, 6:57 PM
Good luck on that one.

but yeah.. can not be a venom without a spiderman.

lol.. it could work for me because im still make believing spiderman 3 never happened :]
loganaspatch - 4/9/2009, 6:57 PM
they could bring in scorpion/gargan for spidey 4 (which i highly highly doubbt) so he could be VENOM and then technically its a spin off of spidey 4
dellamorte1872 - 4/9/2009, 7:07 PM
Raimi IMO has F'd up Spiderman starting with #3... and F'd up the middle end/end of #2.. So a reboot has to be thought of as "fixing mistakes/errors in the franchise or atleast the previous movie or movies.. Comicbook movie makers have to base their movies solely on the comicbooks alone and not tampered or F'd around with since there's always the possibilty (and probability) of having a sequel.. When a sequel is thought of, it has to be logical.. So like BATMAN and HULK "IF" they're going to go forward with a Vemon movie everything has to be erased as far as Vemon's inclusion in Spiderman 3.. Casting.. and the way they finished him off.. IMO Spiderman 3 was horrible.. The dopey caberet crap.. Peter Parker's Saturdaynight Fever strut in Manhattan.. The Peter Parker piano playing and dance routine.. WTF were they thinking..??? They could bring back Venom in a Spiderman movie (secretly slyly squeeze in Brook as if he survived the blast) recast the actor and have Spiderman & Venom fight Carnage at the end of either Pt 4 or 5.. It's not brain surgery.. But one thing should be done.. FIRE RAIMI!!!!!!!

Dude.. What the hell is wrong with you, DarkAvengers? Do you get all of you info from 3 episodes of Spider-Man: Unlimited and Marvel Adventures comics? The more you blab about stuff, the less I respect your opinions...

As a venom expert, you'd know that as soon as The Life Foundation came into his life, both Eddie and the Suit couldn't care less about Parker... In fact, they became a good cop/bad cop team... Anything involving his offspring (Riot, Phage, Lasher, Agony {and even Hybrid}, Scream, Carnage {and through Carnage, Toxin}), Venom doesn't even care about Spidey. At all.

As for the whole Mac Gargan thing... I support this. And before folks blow me up for saying that, I think that Scorpion would have to be rewritten as a loser (a la Shocker), possibly even a wannabe hero, who Spidey kinda boots to the side, because he keeps endangering himself and others in the process.

And instead of getting modified with Scorpion DNA at Connors', have him catch that lil bit of Symbiote... A really unstable piece, wanting to be whole (seeing as how it was separated from its main bit). And that instability makes the Monster.

At least... Thats what I'd think.

Brock Lesner as VENOM!
Scarecrow - 4/9/2009, 9:21 PM

dbzfan - 4/9/2009, 9:30 PM

Lesner should not be in a movie were you have to see his face. It is always frozen in that "I've got to take a crap really bad!" face.

Other than that I am staying out of this one, cause it could get ugly.
THEHAWK - 4/9/2009, 10:17 PM
metal head; no eddie brock s not stronger then peter parker/spiderman eddie brock is stronger then plain old peter parker no powers the symbiot gives him the strength of spiderman which is about the ability to lift 10 tons. eddie brock is almost a olympic class weight lifter therefor making him stronger. well at least thats how they classified it back in the 90's
any way
still nick cage for eddie brock sr
darthstern - 4/9/2009, 10:29 PM
i only pulled kurt russell out of the air cause i was trying to think of someone who was older but still tough looking... there are probably many better choices. i also hate rebooting characters as much as the next guy, so i decided to come up with the father/son angle... i dont see you coming up with anything better!!

Also I would find it highly upsetting if they used mac gargan for venom because that would only confirm that spider-man 3's venom is all we get of the eddie brock symbiote (the real venom.)

aaand i think people should stop crapping on Sam Raimi and Topher Grace. Raimi didnt want to include venom, but was forced by producers... and has stated that he isnt going to allow that to happen again for any upcoming spider-mans (so the next one will be the REAL test!) and topher only took the part because he is a huge comic book nerd, so can you really blame him? i think he did surprisingly well considering he's eric foreman.
Colt - 4/9/2009, 11:27 PM
Nick Cage SUCKS!!!

ScrewdUp - 4/9/2009, 11:27 PM
idk if this movie is a good idea the only way i can see non comic fans seeing it is if they spin it off of Spidey 3 and have grace play him again, otherwise it is going to just bring in the fans like Punisher: War zone did.

also the reason why Grace's Eddie refers to himself as Brock jr. is because he is being portrayed as the Eddie from the ultimate universe where his name is Eddie Brock jr.
Osiris - 4/9/2009, 11:47 PM
Darthstern, you are wrong about Eddie Brock being stronger than Peter Parker. And don't give me that "that's how they classified it in the old days" cause I have literally every single appearance that he even showed up on a page of all the way up to the late 90's. Eddie Brock has ridiculous strength, yes, but without the symbiote Peter Parker is still WAY stronger than him.

Colt, not to get into a huge debate over this with you (hopefully) but yes, I do blame Topher for taking the role even though he is "a huge comic book nerd." I am just a regular-built guy. Not huge, not small. I don't resemble Eddie Brock in the least other than that I am also white. Being as big a fan of Venom as I am I would turn down the role in the unlikely event that they came knocking at my door to offer it to me, knowing full well that I couldn't come even remotely close to doing Venom justice. I am not so arrogant as to think that because I read Venom from day one that I could portray him in a movie since I have absolutely nothing in common with him physically. (I do drule green slime though.) So that being sad, IF Topher Grace really is as big a fan as he claims then he should have respectfully declined knowing full well that he didn't deserve the part.

I know that they chose Topher because they wanted their Eddie Brock to basically be the exact opposite of Peter's personality. Too bad for Topher that he didn't get the role of Harry Osbourne cause he would've been much better for that role than the one he ended up with and the whole dynamic that they wanted between Peter and Eddie still could've worked with Peter and Topher as Harry. Anyway, we could go on for days at a time listing all the things that they should've done differently.
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 12:14 AM

You need a big guy to play VENOM!!! Also no talk about NIC CAGE he's too busy getting GHOST RIDER 2 done heh heh! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/10/2009, 6:49 AM
You make it dark. You make it R rated. You have it sort of pick up a ways after Spidey 3, but you offer some flash backs to offer up a bit of origins stuff. Recreate the flashbacks. Offer some flash back fight scenes with a "spiderman" created for the movie. He is masked. Not hard. Now, I'm not venom comic expert, but how about all their fighting has caught the attention of some individuals that want the symbiote so while venom is out and about hunting for spidey, he is ambushed. Fights out of it, but now goes on a mission to find out who (some scientific organization from the comics??) is after him. Reboot the character, by recasting him and offering up flashbacks of his origin and some time spent fighting spidey while brock/venom has a sort of gollum narration to kick it off? Blood, violence, dark, gore... I think thats what venom needs.
CyborgNinja - 4/10/2009, 7:07 AM
this is a bad idea
thenumber12 - 4/10/2009, 7:24 AM
Furthermore, its cool that he showed up in the spidey movies, but you can still create a darker more venom friendly universe and create a spiderman for that universe, kind of like you'd create a villan for spideys world? Comes and goes, fight here, fight there.

Pretend that ending in spidey 3 didnt even happen. Don't even mention it! I think something along those lines and the movie will fly
CyborgNinja - 4/10/2009, 7:25 AM
say what you will but even the look they gave Venpm in sp3 sucked, though too lets not forget you saw FOREMAN's face in the suit way more than venoms ie:the tongue. drool and forocious teeth i understand that raimi was harkening back to venoms first appearance
dellamorte1872 - 4/10/2009, 7:39 AM
Does anyone here remember when Marvel changed Venom from a villain to an "anti-hero" and gave him his own book? They ruined what made Venom cool in the first place. I don't see a Venom movie happening unless they make him an "anti-hero" and have him fight Carnage. I absolutely HATE Carnage. His psychotic nature is as cartoonishly overexaggerated as Goldberg's win streak was.

As for Brock Lesnar playing him, I always thought he'd make a good Eddie Brock. He's got the appearance and the huge burly physique. Only thing is: can he act?
comicb00kguy - 4/10/2009, 7:41 AM
Metalhead I'm not disagreeing with you but venom is stronger then spiderman because eddie in naturaly stronger the peter if peter did not have powers. As in if a non meta eddie went up against a non meta peter eddie is stronger there for venom is slightly stronger then spidrerman
darthstern - 4/10/2009, 7:53 AM
wow........some serious ragers over this topic
number10 - 4/10/2009, 8:19 AM
I personally believe Venom isn't a strong enough character to hold his own movie. Comic book, sure, but a film franchise no. After the ending of Spidey 3, some of the symbiote is still kickin' it at Dr. Conner's lab, so they could go from there but really, Venom without Spidey is like meatloaf without gravy.

It just wont be the same.

I am curious how this will turn out, but I don't have high hopes for this, just give me Spidey 4, and screw this reboot crap, not everything needs it. Yes the third movie blew, but they can't all be winners. I say move on, next villain please, and thank god no more Green Goblin, they screwed his character up enough as it is.

dellamorte1872 - 4/10/2009, 8:57 AM
Nothing even remotely involved with Spider man is ever going to be R rated EVER, so you can stop hoping for that right now. Jesus they cant even make a [frick]ing Terminator movie with an R rating these days for gods sake!
Rorschach01 - 4/10/2009, 9:03 AM
Darthstern,
What is the point of even saying that then? That's like saying that if Bruce Banner couldn't turn into the Hulk that he'd be annihilated by the military. The fact is that Peter does have his powers, he can't lose his powers like Eddie can when seperated from the symbiote, and therefore is and will always be stronger than Venom-- so long as he has his powers.

Comicbookguy,
Totally disagree. First off, when they gave Venom his own mini-series ("Lethal Protector") he had already been established as an "anti-hero" in the Spider-Man serieses. This was never a change from his character. Even in the events building up to Venom's second storyline encounter with Spider-Man this was shown through a series of 2-3-page short stories that showed the events of Eddie/Venom getting back to Manhattan after breaking out of the Vault in Colorado. The stories showed him traveling cross-country, hitchhiking, etc. He'd get rides from good & innocent people. One time they were all threatened by some thugs at a diner and Eddie whooped ass to protect them. Keep in mind that this was way back in Venom's early days. (I can provide issue numbers if anyone wants to read them.)

This character trait was exactly what drew fans to him. People loved the fact that we was a cool-looking, super-tough, badass guy who wasn't out for mindless slaughter, robbing banks, getting rich, etc. His sole purpose was to destroy Spider-Man but he always had a soft spot for innocent life, protecting the innocents, etc. He was ALWAYS an "anti-hero" as people like to call him.

CyborgNinja,
YES, it is "that hard" and I'll tell you why. You are forgetting a major factor here. You, everyone on here and I all know about Venom. We know his story, we know that he's a good guy who wants to kill Spider-Man, etc. BUT, the rest of the world does not. The last the casual fan saw of Venom/Eddie Brock he was a snot-nosed brat kid and a blatant supervillian with no redeeming qualities.

So how would this audience go from cheering when Spider-Man & friends defeated him to getting behind him all of a sudden without rebooting him, re-telling his story and origin-- and not in quick fake flashbacks either-- and showing the audience exactly why they should be getting behind this guy who as far as they know is a psychotic, murdering supervillian. The point is that they would need to spend an ENTIRE movie correctly re-telling his origin because that's how long it would take to get the viewers behind him. A few fake flashbacks wouldn't be enough.

Hookah0addict/others who feel that it doesn't need to be Eddie,
Maybe there have been several hosts, but YES, it DOES have to be Eddie! Who the hell wants to watch a movie with Max Gargan as Venom?!? That is NOT Venom and if they're gonna do that then they'd might as well just give the symbiote to whoever they want and just write an entirely new story. What is the point of doing a Venom movie WITHOUT making it about the real Venom?!? Just to try to justify that it could still happen in the universe that they created in the "Spider-Man" series? Stupid. No offense to you.

Look, no matter how we break this down, we're gonna keep coming to the same conclusion: this can't be done correctly due to the mess they made in "Spider-Man 3." It has to be a spin-off of the series due to the fact that his origin specifically involves Spider-Man. Therefore to do it right they'd need to either use his origin from "Spider-Man 3" OR re-tell it but the problem with that is that it involves Spider-Man too much and they're not gonna make a movie with Spider-Man as one of the main characters that isn't part of the "Spider-Man" series-- they'd just do another "Spider-Man" movie.
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 9:08 AM
just do it sin city style with venom narrating about how messed up he is and how much he wants to kill spiderman, and just have him first as eddie brock plotting revenge and then the symbiote giving him that oppurtunity to seek his revenge. and make it R rated.
Boekelaar - 4/10/2009, 9:24 AM
Kurt Russell..? Nooooooooo, I don't think so. +, you can't do a Venom movie without some reference to Spiderman, anyway. Secret Wars anybody? I see Catwoman all over again.
SWANN - 4/10/2009, 9:50 AM
ok i realy don wanna get involved in this stupid lil debate over venom cuz personaly i love venom...so any idea of seeing him redone excites me (just hope they don flop it) lol

oh yh this stupidness about why venom iz stronger...is exactly what it is..stupid.

the reason why venom is stronger then spidey is loads of reasons..infact no1 is truely wrong just that you ain gt the whole picture.

1) as a normal human eddie is strongr the pete
2) The sybiote gives the host added superhuman strength (plus obz otherabilities) so a supercharged eddie would be stronger then a supercharged peter parker (pre spider bit)
3) the symbiote was on peter 1st..so the sybiote has tasted spidermans power which is the reason why eddie as venom has similar powers to spiderman..also because the sybiote has been with spiderman 1st..eddie brock knows most of spidermans moves nd kinda knows what he will do before he does it which to him makes spiderman v predictable
4) Eddie as venom does not show up on spidermans 'spider sense' so venom always gets the element of surpise

There thats why venom is stronger then spidey!! so u all can shut up bout that now

i love anyfin to do wiv carnage or venom so im lookin forward to it (screw any1 hu finks otherwise) and as a bonus comment i wnt jim carey as carnage..hu else can pull of crazy better then him?
mutantJ - 4/10/2009, 10:26 AM
I'd have to disagree with you mutantJ. Spidey can lift a car, Eddie (without the help of the symbiote) cannot, no regular human can. Granted this is comics, but he's just a man. That's my two cents.
Stumblin - 4/10/2009, 10:36 AM
MutantJ,
Before you get involved in debates then maybe you should learn to read before telling everyone to shut up.

No one is questioning the fact that Venom is stronger than Spider-Man. You just inadvertantly proved the point: "as a normal human being Eddie is stronger than Peter." Well Peter ISN'T a normal human being!

Not to mention that no one was questioning fighting styles like this is Joe Rogan breaking down his prediction of a UFC fight.

Thanks for trying (and failing) to sound smarter than everyone by pointing out facts that are common knowledge to a Venom fan, like the fact that Peter had the symbiote first and the fact that Venom doesn't trigger Peter's spider-sense.

The debate never had anything to do with who was tougher, nor was is whether VENOM or SPIDER-MAN was stronger, it was if PETER or EDDIE-- WITHOUT POWERS-- was stronger. Learn to read before you run your mouth. And thank you for enlightening us to the fact that Peter had the symbiote first. (That was sarcasm-- I pointed it out since you apparently can't correctly interpret the things written on here.)
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 10:40 AM
nah nah Sumblin..what i meant was both eddie and peter gain superhuman strength

peter with the spider bite...eddie with the sybiote

eddie was stronger then pete without powers so once you give them both superhuman strength naturally eddi will b stronger..

so i jacked ur 2 cents and it goes in my piggy bank lool jokin dude
mutantJ - 4/10/2009, 10:41 AM
GEEZ PPL!!!! VENOM CAN HOLD HIS OWN!!! Easy, everyone knows who VENOM is so you don't need the origin bit, VENOM can come back easy!!! An can easy be a R RATED movie!!! Don't need SPIDEY in it either, heck no, SPIDEYS got SPIDEY 4 5 & 6 to worry about! : D ... VENOM can be a very big action packed hardcore movie!!! An have the birth of CARNAGE at the end, then SONY can make CARNAGE the movie!!! A really nasty never done before HORROR MOVIE!!! Like Hannibal Lector with SUPERPOWERS!!! Heck even can have VENOM turn up in it, halfway through to stop CARNAGE'S killing spree! Hey if SONY had the ballz they would! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/10/2009, 10:45 AM
@MetalHead hahaha learn to read? lool ok then..i wud reply to that but as i said i don settle arguments on a computer typing with 1 hand while bashin to a porn that u also watchin in another window like u...im more of a settle it face to face guy..buuuuuuuuut annnnyhuuu moving on

i still say Jim carey for Carnage!!!

mutantJ - 4/10/2009, 11:25 AM
my question is how would this work since he is a villain and most story lines "in movies" usually goes from the perspective of the hero or good guy.
he started out as a villain right and sort of started fighting for the helpless.
so would he be vengeful venom
or would he be more like ghost rider where he
looks evil but is not.
and besides spider-man what adversary can he go up against.
aside from this i would love to see a Venom movie.
HR - 4/10/2009, 11:30 AM
Damn it, I needed those two cents! But I do like the idea of Carey as Carnage, that or I could dig the guy that played Rorschach.
Stumblin - 4/10/2009, 11:38 AM
HR,
You're pretty much hitting the nail right on the head here with the problems.

As far as starting out as a villian, he always was a villian but he never killed innocents UNLESS they stood in his way of getting to Spider-Man. He's not a character who changed his views, it just became that he was so popular among the fans that he inadvertantly became a fan-favorite and I think that's why they really started writing him as a "good guy" completely. It started when Spider-Man was first forced to team with him to stop Carnage, and then again in the "Maximum Carnage" crossover. Once he got his first mini-series ("Venom: Lethal Protector") he was basically a full-on good guy and he teamed with Spider-Man again in that series.

You bring up another issue as far as who his adversary would be if not Spider-Man. Here is the problem: another Spidey bad guy would be great... IF they were also already introduced in the "Spider-Man" series. The problem is that most of Spider-Man's adversaries-- especially the ones that Venom would likely fight-- have origins that also involve Spider-Man closely. Carnage could be done BUT I would hate to see his first film appearance in a movie that doesn't also have Spider-Man.

Once again, we come to the conclusion that this can't be done right, as cool as seeing Venom done correctly on the big screen would be.

MutantJ,
If you want to debate then debate. I'm not gonna go back and forth with you making kiddie comments. That being said, I did like your idea of Jim Carrey as Carnage. I don't love it but I think it could be good if HE did it well. He'd need to want to be nuts again, though. He seems to be a bit of a Nancy these days.
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 11:44 AM
@Metalhead

agreed..if jim carey went back to his hard core crazyness i believe he can pull it off

truce btw
mutantJ - 4/10/2009, 12:07 PM
i could dig it.
TaffetaDarling - 4/10/2009, 12:15 PM
awww...i liked topher grace. But Jim Carrey? SWEEEEETTT IDEA! But seriously they are on thin ice with this movie. Somebody might be frickin' assassinated if they screw this up. But Venom, and Carnage would be a good idea.
Fartman - 4/10/2009, 12:15 PM
BaronBubba,

Yeah, i'm a venom expert who bases that off of spiderman 1 through 3. Youre an idiot. IT CANT HAPPEN AND IT WONT. You're wrong, I'm right. PERIOD.
DarkAvengers - 4/10/2009, 12:22 PM
You do NOT need a whole movies to recount venoms origin which amounts to getting oilly spooge on him while in the cathedral. You sum all that shit there that people remember from the spidey 3 movie and what fans know from the comic book up in a narrated flashback. Heck, if you want, even show the blast with venom saying "He thought he could kill us....etc"

An R rating though is probably very unrealistic. You get venom to tell things from his perspective. A bit of a sob story, make him the victem almost? You offer up a spiderman in his movie as a cocky little snot antagonist. Sort of turn the tables? Give it a more "from venoms point of view". The rest is simple. Everyone doesnt need a detailed recount of HOW he got here. What people want now is WHERE is he going? And he is going to go smash up some science lab full of inept guards, pseudo-scientific gagets, perhaps get captured and break free?

Reboot venom, and reboot spiderman with him? Make raimi's films obsolete since the spiderman franchise is taking a dump. Again, thats a tad more unrealistic, but people dont care. They just want a good movie thats accurate to the story line man.

Stop complicating something that IS NOT complicated.
CyborgNinja - 4/10/2009, 1:08 PM
CyborgNinja,
Here's why it is way more complicated than you realize: hardcore Venom fans like myself don't want a half-assed Venom story that isn't even close to accurate. It IS that complicated. I personally would just rather not see him in another movie than see him in one that ruins him like the 3rd Spider-Man movie did.

Yes, they could come up with a way to justify how things occurred due to the aftermath of the results of "Spider-Man 3." But if that's what they end up doing then you and anyone who would be okay with that are missing the point:

Venom is a character with a hardcore cult following. The general public doesn't know his completely "true" origin. Venom is not a character that Marvel would likely be able to turn into a blockbuster movie like the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" franchises. So the main target market for the film will likely be the hardcore fans with some appeal to the general public but for the most part it won't have mainstream appeal. Its audience will likely be similar to the "Blade"/"Spawn"/"Sin City"/"Watchmen" audiences.

Yes, some people without knowledge of Venom other than what they saw in "Spider-Man 3" will see it, but for the most part it will be marketed towards us, the hardcore fan. SO, IF it's gonna be a movie for US, then give US the movie that WE WANT! I can understand the business aspect of taking creative liberties with the "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Iron Man" franchises which are marketed towards the mainstream audience. Venom is not for the mainstream so don't take the creative liberties needed to sell him to the general public, do it right since WE are the people that the movie would be for. Do the "REAL" story or don't do it at all!
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 1:32 PM
mutantj @ lmao!!! good ol' CAREY, damn i would luv if he could play THE MASK again!
LEEE777 - 4/10/2009, 1:54 PM
This is just a bad idea right now. I love Venom, but his introduction to the big screen was half-assed at best. I think the only hope for the character involves Marvel taking the helm and launching a reboot of Spider-Man movies later on down the line. Then maybe if they set it up right it could happen. Also I know I'm gonna catch hell for this. But any opinions on John Cena as Eddie Brock? I mean really, if he's in the suit most of the time, how great does his acting need to be?
Deathlok - 4/10/2009, 2:22 PM
Deathlok,
Believe it or not, I don't hate that idea. He does have that "I'm mean if you piss me off but I'm a good guy" look to him. Don't know if he could pull off the acting or not but I think that with Eddie Brock finding someone with the correct appearance is just as important as any of the other necessary criteria.
MetalHead - 4/10/2009, 2:32 PM
now that u mention it i would have preferred cena rather then topher grace in spiderman 3.. haha a movie that i am still make believing never happened :D

i was thinking about this the other night, the big thing about watchmen being rated r and studios pulling the plug on rated r movies, get rid of the nudity ... granted im a adult and i didnt mind the nudity in watchmen. but it was not necessary, so tone it down a bit but keep the violence and darkness of a adult situations.

this will probaly be a generational thing if it ever gets done, like our kids might see a venom movie because we know the deal and would allow our teen to go see a movie like venom.
loganaspatch - 4/10/2009, 3:19 PM
VENOM needs a Reboot. I was devestated by Spider Man 3's depiction of him!

NO TOPHER GRACE!

Vin Diesel, John Cena, Dave Batista, Dominic Purcell, Triple H, just ANYBODY BUT GRACE, could be a better Venom.

A singular film about Venom to start, and for the sequel do a Spider Man VS. Venom crossover film.
SpiderMan209 - 4/10/2009, 5:28 PM
thanks for responding metalhead.
I guess we will have to see either go through the whole venom history to find a proper story line or just generate a whole new type of venom story line.
oh and one more thing going back to movie world alot of the time there is a love interest involved in these movies even if the love of their life is killed, how would they tie that in.

It did break my comic book heart when Rami said he didn't much care for venom or that it wasn't his favorite.
it was also wrong to take Gwen stacy away from peter and connect her with Eddie Brook Jr. tsk tsk.
HR - 4/10/2009, 10:21 PM
Spiderman 3 made Venom look like a noob.
GameAnime45 - 4/10/2009, 11:03 PM
Metalhead get over it dude. No one in their right mind markets purely to the "die hard got the pajama and bedsheets" fans. Never. You can't take 100+ issues of character history and turn it into one glorious movie that'll make die hard fans cream themselves and noobs to the character ache to know more! Not going to happen. The stuido/director is going to market to as many people as possible so the story will get hacked or your best bet is something like my idea. I don't care how many comics you have, collectors toys, etc etc. You're living in a dream land. They're going to hack the story line to bits and figure out a way to get the concept of venom across while still having all the usual movie elements to sucker in the masses. Promise you.

In a realistic cinema world, my idea functions.
CyborgNinja - 4/11/2009, 6:51 AM
AGAIN, THIS IS HOLLYWOOD!!!! An they can do what they wan't, they normally do lol!!! Everyone knows VENOM now, so don't need ORIGIN, Flashbacks maybe, but don't even need SPIDEY!!! Just a good solid VENOM story, can have the birth of CARNAGE at the end! Can easy make VENOM near a R-RATED and make it sweet too!!! Then spin off CARNAGE into the best HORROR movie never been told!!! (Ofcourse that'll be R). It'll be so far past SPIDEY, SONY can do it!!! CARNAGE would be up there with FREDDY, JASON, etc easy!!! Its a movie begging to be made! Also can have VENOM appear init obviously say half way through trying to stop CARNAGE'S killing spree!!! ; ) SONY, you got the ballz??? Something like this needs movie magic!
LEEE777 - 4/11/2009, 7:42 AM
CyborgNinja,
You're a clown. I never said I play with toys. You are completely wrong and since you can't come up with a better argument you start throwing insults.

Here is ANOTHER reason why you are wrong:
"You can't take 100+ issues of character history and turn it into one glorious movie..."
Who ever said to crunch all of his appearances into the movie? Newsflash to you, who apparently knows nothing-- Venom's origin took place on a total of less than one comic book between Eddie Brock being made to be a fraud over the "Sineater" stories and then being found by the symbiote. AND his first battle with Spider-Man was only ONE ISSUE! Now are you trying to tell me that all of that wouldn't fit in a movie? Nice try but you're wrong... again.

And YET ANOTHER point that you are wrong about:
"No one in their right mind markets purely to the 'die hard got the pajama and bedsheets' fans."
True. They may not market a movie purely to the hardcore fans. BUT that doesn't mean that they don't MAKE the movies that the die hard fans want and then attempt to market them towards the mainstream after the fact. "Sin City" is a perfect example of this. It was done correctly and very true to the comic. There is no reason that they couldn't do a film based on the same premise of staying true to the source material, making a good movie and trusting that if done well it will be a success. "Sin City" wasn't made to be a mainstream blockbuster. It was marketed to the mainstream, yes, but being a mainstream success wasn't crucial to its success. The same could be done with this movie. Your scenerio will not please the hardcore fans. It will-- at best-- mildly please the mainstream. They are probably smart enough to know with this particular character that IF they do a film where they can at least please the hardcore fans that they'll have a target market to build around.
MetalHead - 4/11/2009, 8:48 AM
I just hope SONY will do the best VENOM they can and will keep us all happy! An them that don't wanna watch it, go an watch FRIDAY 13th part two the remake instead lol! Oh man, METALHEAD i wish HOLLYWOOD would make all their comic book movies like SIN CITY an WATCHMEN etc!!! God i hate CATWOMAN lol, though the last 2 movies DC/WARNERS have brought out, all is forgiven heh heh!!! : D ... I sorta feel HEX and GREEN LANTERN are in good hands now. The bar for these movies has been risen! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/11/2009, 10:56 AM
WOWZERS
CRUSH - 4/11/2009, 4:25 PM
I am dumbfounded at how many picks there are based solely on the 'look' and mass of an actor or performer. Brock Lesnar? The mixed martial artist, right? I hope there is and actual actor who I've not heard of with the same name. Otherwise that is the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

If Sony really is going through with this, it will most likely be our Carnage feature as well. I don't think Raimi wants anything to do with symbiotes, so the studio is giving us something to shut us up. Only problem is, Venom has been a character primarily defined by his interactions with Spidey. To me, Venom has always been one of Spidey's most lethal enemies, but what are they going to do for a solo treatment? Sorry, but Venom and Carnage with Spiderman... doesn't sound like much fun. I feel like this might end up like Elektra. I'll watch it nonetheless.
TheMyth - 4/12/2009, 2:21 AM
ELEKTRA??? VENOM has the cool factor MYTH lol @ Geez ELEKTRA? That's like saying ROBIN or NIGHTWING lol! Well sorta, anyway VENOM is one of the most coolest characters in the MARVEL Universe! It don't need Spidey to sell it! An i reckon it'll still be better if we get the birth of CARNAGE at the end of VENOM! No point rushing CARNAGE, that's what SONY did to VENOM in SPIDEY 3! Then a pure HORROR movie with CARNAGE as the main character!!! It will be up there with horror movie greats like FREDDY an JASON on the Big screen!!! An be so away from SPIDER-MAN that SONY could get away with it easy! ; ) WOWZERS heh heh heh
LEEE777 - 4/12/2009, 11:29 AM
Man Elektra is one of the shit coolest comic characters in existance! And has as much (if not more) of a following than Venom. Just because the movies she was in didnt do her justice, by rights they SHOULD have been awesome.
Rorschach01 - 4/12/2009, 2:03 PM
Yep Rorsch she is a cool character an they should've done her with more of that cool factor and more justice!!! Though i did find i liked her more in ELEKTRA more than i did in DAREDEVIL!!! I remember booking time of work to go an see ELEKTRA on my own in the daytime, it was the last showing, i bought the ticket, i went in and i had the whole cinema to myself!!! It was so friggin' cool, the whole cinema for me, never has that happened ever before!!! An thats why ELEKTRA holds a special place in my heart, i read everywhere at the time how bad it was, i was expecting the worst but was pleasently surprised! I bought it on DVD too!!! Heh heh.
LEEE777 - 4/13/2009, 6:18 AM
I actually watched it on dvd a good while after it came out..and hated it! lol. It wasnt so much that the movie was awful..although it was pretty bad, but i was expecting them to at least partially follow her most famous story , Elektra: Assassin..but they just made up some crap about protecting some clown and his annoying daughter and just stuffed the movie with cliches. I dont think Garner was bad as Elektra though and wouldnt mind seeing her reprise the role with a proper script and director
Rorschach01 - 4/13/2009, 7:49 AM
Bout damn Tyme. Venom is the man
nitewing313 - 4/13/2009, 8:06 AM

TheJester - 4/13/2009, 8:34 AM
if carnage was ever in a venom or spiderman film i'd like him to be played by the guy who was Scarecrow in Batman Begins. He looks Carnage enough, but with that said, I would like to see this happen...
CONTRACTS WITH THE INDUSTRY!! None of this cross over B.S. Marvel to DCU. (Halley Barry-Storm-Catwoman) (Cyclopse-Lois Lane's lover) WTF! CONTRACTS PEOPLE!! WE NEED CONTRACTS!!!
Scarecrow - 4/17/2009, 11:05 PM
well, the venom movie is a great idea, especially how Sam Raimi didn't get him quite the way any of us venom fans wanted. But the story might get confusing if spidey isn't involved, he has to play a major role in it,like joker to batman, spidey is the whole reason venom exists and why he persues peter. Making carnage the villian would make sense, he teamed with spidey to stop carnage, but one of the newer spider-man movies would need carnage in them, to make the venom movie make more sense and more like the comics. they could also take up a story from the venom comics, which have been around for i think well over a decade, but peter parker is still a big part in that. even those who don' read comics know that pidey needs some kind of role in this.
pideyvenomfan - 4/20/2009, 7:39 PM
They should have it as carnage is introduced and the venom symbiote gets out of doc conners have a carnage vs. venom battle. Make a spinoff from there to the spider-man 4 movie. Good idea or not? and we can't have a pussy like Topher Grace play him. Horrible casting. Person who thought of that should be fired.
ScubaSteve2552 - 4/21/2009, 10:26 AM
i think it was sam raimi who casted topher grace, but he also never read spiderman into the 80s and he missed the venom saga. on top of that, he didn't have the control over themovie like he had in spiderman 1 and 2, it was more the producers pushing for venom
pideyvenomfan - 4/21/2009, 1:43 PM
for all of you that said this isnt gonna happen, read the article, they are writing a script. this might not guarantee a movie but it definately is big step in the process happening. and all of the ppl that said they were big venom fans or loved venom etc., but they dont want this to happen or wouldnt see it cause it would suck or whatever, thats pretty sad, u should want them to make it on the chance that it would be awsome even if that chance was a long shot or not, you should support the character and hope for the best. i for one hope this happens and is done damn well, maybe some of the bashers will regret posting then. i dont know who they should get to play venom or reboot or sequel, just hope its done good. they have a chance to do venom some justice after his 20minutes in SM3
NiteSoul69 - 4/23/2009, 7:55 AM
I like the idea of the Venom movie...I hated that Venom had only a short part in the Spider-Man 3 movie and I also hated that to...that in the comics Eddie Brock only said Eddie Brock. There was never sr. or jr. added afterwards you know...and they way that Topher Grace did the job as venom i liked it but they could've done some more work with Grace to embrace his inner darkness since i mean Venom is suppose to be Bulky, and very dark.
Now If you put Carnage as the villian you should use Zachary Quinto for Carnage since he does an excellent job as Syler for the Heroes series. And Plus if you add Carnage in there please for the love of god put in the sequal Carnage's son Toxin since there is a comic book that is called Venom vs Carnage and its of the birth of Toxin.
