Popular GMA TV Network actress Marian Rivera has recently began her physical training in Wushu, Street Fighting, and "flying" on a harness for the role of Mars Ravelo's iconic Philippine Superheroine- DARNA.

The New series which begins this coming August, 2009 in the Philippines will take a 'back to basics' approach to the series while breathing new life to her original lore. Whereas the 2005 tv series which starred Angel Locsin as DARNA took a slightly sci-fi/fantasy approach with its use of new alien villains, the upcoming new tv series starring Marian Rivera will be a reboot and not a continuation of the 2005 tv series' continuity. The new 2009 tv series plans to utilize many of the original elements created by Mars Ravelo himself.

The Villains of the new series will be her classic villains from the "komiks" and Philippine cinema's 'Golden Age':BABAING IMPAKTA (Roma) - A Vampiric female born with a conjoined parasitic demon-twin, BABAING LAWIN (Armida) - A Winged female with Hawk-like predatory qualities, BABAING TUOD (Lucifera)- a Shape-Shifting woman who can control dead trees with the power to transform into one, BABAING LINTA (Lutgarda) - A bloodsucking Circus-freak who can manipulate the weather, and of course, BABAING AHAS (Valentina)- Darna's arch-nemesis who crossed paths with our heroine when she unleashed a plague of serpents in the hopes of taking away Man's status as the Earth's most dominant organism.

The series will also co-star child actor Robert "Buboy" Villar as DARNA's younger brother (and sidekick), "Ding". For DARNA fans in the Philippines, tune in to GMA Network Channel 7. For DARNA fans across the world, check your local Cable TV Service provider and subscribe to "GMA PINOY TV". "DARNA" Starring Marian Rivera is expected to begin in August, 2009. The format of this series will be similar to the legendary Gothic/Fantasy soap opera- "Dark Shadows" (5 days a week on weeknights on Prime time and is videotaped like the early "Dr. Who" episodes from the BBC)

I wonder what that towel is for?
Kalabog - 6/23/2009, 6:03 AM
@ Betty
Ha-ha-ha. What towel? I believe its a stylized "bahag". A "bahag" refers to the loincloth which was commonly used throughout the Philippines before the arrival of European colonizers, and which is used by some indigenous tribes of the Philippines today.

Also, Darna's arch nemesis is Valentina. Her half-sister who is a beautiful gorgon which resembles Medusa.

In the 70s the most successful movie version was made- "Darna and the Giants" where Darna is pitted against 5 giants (100 feet). Its a classic.

Darna was first launched in the 1950s and from the start her primary powers include super strength, super speed near-invulnerability and flight. As a final note in the original comics Darna's alter ego is 10 year old girl-- Narda! Obviously, her chief inspirations were Superman and Captain Marvel.
