Nicolas Winding Refn Explains His Interest In Wonder Woman Nicolas Winding Refn Explains His Interest In Wonder Woman

The director of the new Ryan Gosling movie, Drive has not been shy about his desire to make a Wonder Woman film. Click the jump to see how this obsession took root.

Most of us know by now that this director is doing everything possible to the director of a Wonder Woman film. He already has his leading lady in mind, Christina Hendricks. The Mad Men actress just the other day said that she would play the role in a heartbeat if asked by Nicolas.

Refn also disclosed that he has assurances from insiders at Warner Bros., which owns the rights, that if his remake of Logan's Run is a hit he'll get his dream project. The buzz on Drive is outstanding, and his past project Bronson is still making noise and becoming a cult hit. As of now I'd say that Refn is in very good shape to get want he wants, and he deserves it.

Was he always a fan? Did he read the comics? So, I asked if two of the biggest names in shaping Diana Prince’s comics run, writers Greg Rucka and George Pérez, rung a bell.
“Who are they?” Refn asked.

“I think my whole fetish and my interest in Wonder Woman came from three or four years ago,” Refn said. “My daughter got obsessed with the Wonder Woman television show. The old, ’70s version. I would watch them back to back with her and really enjoyed them immensely. And I’ve always been fascinated by her as a character. I’m not a knowledgeable comic fanatic, as a lot of other people are. But I was very fascinated by a woman of power. And I couldn’t come [up] with any other great role models for my daughter to, say, ‘That’s a woman.’ Besides her mother. So I started getting wholly, completely obsessed about Wonder Woman and saying, ‘I’ve got to make her as a movie. I’ve got to make my take on it.’ And then I met a comic book writer who told me the origins about her, which was very fascinating and I began to see that myself and the creator of her probably had the same fetish of women. And then I knew that I had to make this film… if it ever gets made.” - COLLIDER

By the way I'm not bothered at all that Refn didn't know who Rucka and Perez are or were. I'm a child of the show as well and I never enjoyed the comic books as much as Lynda Carter running around in a gold bustier.

Drive opens up in theaters this Friday!

From the title of this thread before I clicked on it, I was fully expecting his reason being "boobs and ass bouncing around on screen". This is good too I guess...

I don't see what the big deal about it being a male or female director as long as the director is passionate and wantst to make a good film.

I don't care what sex it is that directs this movie as long as it's good. Make it happen, and make it in the likes of Thor. That would be insane!

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY- You know the Biggest most iconic Female Character was Made by a man...right? I am not saying a woman couldn't direct this but to insinuate that only a woman could direct this is very detrimental to us dudes man.

There isn't a female director in Hollywood with the kind of track record it takes to be put in charge of a film of this nature. Warner Brothers at the end of the day does not care if the films are unique and creative. They want money. Maybe in 20 years when there are more female directors this would be possible but until then it will just have to fall to one of the many excellent directors that are men. (or possibly an Unknown.)

If he has a passion about the project it could be awesome. On the other hand, if he just wants to take theis character and mold her to HIS ideals it could be a disaster.

I'm gonna go watch "Bronson" now.

It's a great idea to have a true lover of WW like Winding to make this movie.

Anyone can say "just copy the comic", but the truth is this is one character that's been in a constant state of flux, there is no definitive version (not even the cartoon).

So yeah, bring in elements from the 30's to the 70's TV show and beyond!

I hope he gets the gig :-)

I want to see this movie happen, but do not make it like Thor, Thor was Mediocre. Wonder Woman deserves so much more. This movie needs to blow the Marve movies out of the water and be on par with TDK, Watchman etc. WB and DC can't afford another Green Lantern or just a mediocre movie.

I'd like to see them take a serious look at the script Gail Simone had in mind for the movie. If anyone can write WW properly it's her.

Oh and Disclaimer before anyone thinks I'm saying all the Marvel movies were Mediocre. I thought Ironman 1 and Captain America were Fantastic.

Refn or Bigelow for director!

Bridget Regan ("LEgend of the Seeker" series) if done right now, Jamie Alexander if it takes a few years.

Also they should take a look at the "Wonder Woman" animated film for an idea on how to go storywise. It was a great origin story, just needed a bit more action, but it was great!

@marvel72,
I highly recomend you to see: the Pusher trilogy, Valhala Rising and Bronson.

They're not easy-to-digest kind of movies, but all of them are excellent movies, really great movies.

I don't know, maybe you've some salvation! lol
