I don't like: Non comic book readers

Something that is just plain annoying.

This is about people who do not read comic books but assume they know about comic books because they have got knowledge from films and TV, not comics, this is not about comicbook readers and people that actually know what they are talking about or people that have nothing do to with comics.

This is just something that annoys me, this first came to my attention when I was speaking to someone about Batman and they thought that the Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents, this is untrue, Joker's never killed Batman's parents, it was only in the Tim Burton film that this occured to give the joker more of a backstory. The same situation occured when Spider-man 3 came out and people thought that the Sandman killed Uncle Ben.

Another thing is the dark knight. People have just watched that film, thought it was good and have suddenly become lifelong Batman fans, sure the film was good but just by watching it doesn't make you a comicbook fan, it makes you a movie fan. I also overheard someone talking about spider-man and they assumed that his webbing was organic and not from web shooters. This only happened after "disassembled" and was changed in brand new day anyway, after correcting them they felt the need to argue and kept refering back to the spider-man movies but when I pointed out the comics they walked off.

Thanks for your time in reading this, am I the only one to notice or are there others out there?

Sounds so familiar!

In the same way though, I'm sure there are things which you've commented on without knowing the intricate details of the original source of the subject.
Not just media like films or comics, but history, music, politics or whatever.
Doesn't mean you're worthy of hate.
Dumegg - 9/1/2011, 11:12 AM
hear, hear!
superotherside - 9/1/2011, 12:06 PM
yeah... it is irritating but oh well... I guess I've done the same thing with other stuff... lol
BlindLemonShemp - 9/1/2011, 12:29 PM
this makes me laugh... gotta agree with zeroethic on this one though.. everybody does this with something at one point or another.. maybe grow up and try not to be such an elitist... just because you know a few random facts that most people know but ultimately, there's no real need to care about (so some people choose not to), especially on a site called comicbookMOVIE.com... if this were the dc comics forums or something maybe... but seriously, grow up dude

Yea this has happened to me a couple of times, its usually pretty funny but can sometimes get annoying.

But its not only people who just watched the movies but sometimes its guys who read one comic like 15 years ago and they think they know it all.

I dont go around telling everyone I meet Im a comic book fan and when I run into some guy like this I let him rant thinking he knows better then me until it gets boring and I just put him in his place.

And Im not talking about someone who comments in passing, but Ive run into guys who clearly know nothing but swear they know it all and argue adamantly that theyre right. those guys are annoying.
OdinsBeard - 9/1/2011, 12:54 PM
Yeah it really sucks when new people are interested in our beloved past time. glad you're around to make them feel stupid and probably turn them off of comics forever...

It doesn't matter who killed bruce wayne's parent because bruce wayne's parents aren't real people. it's a story of a man. In the comics they wrote it one way, for the original movie they wrote it another to tie the movie all together so it worked as a whole film. The people who said the joker killed bruce wayne's parents were right, as right as you are about it being joe chill or whoever you argued. you can't say they're wrong because bruce wayne's parents were never alive to begin with. it's not real. don't blame the people, blame the studios who let it happen if it upsets you.

But i understand how you feel, probably the same way a writer feels when he clicks on the editorials section of this website.

nerds......

thats part of the reason why i hate batman now. people are like "oh hes my favorite superhero! ahh batmans so awesome." and all they did was watch [frick]ing dark knight, people are ignorant as [frick]
RunDTC - 9/1/2011, 1:10 PM
the guys I know who watch CBMs, save for one, read the comics. so they know the differences between the comics and movies.

I don't know a single girl who reads comics, but....I don't value their opinion on films. they all have bad tatse.
nuck82 - 9/1/2011, 1:45 PM

I agree with OdinsBeard. Instead of having a negative reaction towards things like this, why don't you try to recommend the medium? Get them interested in comics. Oh and movies and comics are both fictional universes. One way may be established first, but that doesn't mean the movies version isn't correct. It may not be a correct adaption, yet it doesn't mean it isn't correct.
BooYah - 9/1/2011, 2:13 PM
I agree with everyone disagreeing with you. Sorry!

I grew up with the 80s/90s animated series. Just give me a visual spectacle with a good story and I'm good.

@ Odinsbeard

haha! you're my boy, lol

idiot: who is your favorite superhero
Me: i like spider-man and batman
idiot: did you hear they are making a new spider-man. my friend said they are ruining it. giving him robot spider web shooters instead of his web powers. he might as well be iron man. they won't be able to top spiderman 3, and the new batman will have catwoman. i've seen a picture and she looks aweso--
Me: *SMACKS*
idiot: what was that for?
Me: you have never read a comic and know nothing about these characters.
idiot: comics are for nerds
Me: BUT THE MOVIES AREN'T!!!
BooYah - 9/1/2011, 8:21 PM
@JackDexx- Wait was that a conversation you had with yourself?

For us comic book readers who have been waiting for so long for a CBM to get as close to the comics as possible and then crap movies come out. Then on top of all this non readers say it was a great movie and think this is how it actualy is. Aggggggggggggggggg This is for any subject if one doesn't know they should shut the F**K up. JUST ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jjmeylar - 9/2/2011, 6:54 AM
I'm okay if they haven't read the comics and have done their research, though. I haven't read the "Harry Potter" books, but have done enough research to know enough to talk to true book fans about it. So, yeah. Good article, though.

@JackDexx: Good scenario.

Understood
Im in a kinda weird position on this one. My father collected almost every Marvel comic from 1975 to 1983 or so and he gave them all to me when I was 10 in 1992. Then I bought my own comics from like 94 to 97 mostly x-men. Then I started grabbing graphic novels in like 04. I cant say that I know all about comics since im not reading any right now but I have a firm grasp on what happens in them from reading Wikipedia a lot.

I do agree with you that if you never read comics or try to keep up please keep your opinions to yourself when siting source material. On the otherhand Just because you dont have a subscription now or visit the comic shop on wednesdays doesnt mean you dont know what your talking about.
CraptainAmerica - 9/2/2011, 12:54 PM
I read comics. But I NEVER try and talk about a character I know nothing about.

That should be the same when CBM watchers talk about comics.

Even I feel embarrassed when it happens!
MovieMaster - 9/3/2011, 5:18 AM
i dont read comics. there was never anywhere that sold comics near me when i was growing up so i never read them. but, since around the beginning of may i got annoyed cos i had missed out on all these great stories. so i picked the best ones and im trying to get through them all as graphic novels. i dont get into arguments or anything like that. actully, i owe CBM a privelege. the commenters on here where the people who taught me my basic knowledge of comics! thank you! and when i was a little boy i did used to think the things you mentioned in the editorial but i found out for myself whether they were true or not.
x24 - 9/4/2011, 9:32 AM
