Guillermo del Toro Talks About PACIFIC RIM
Guillermo del Toro talks about why the cast of Pacific Rim is so diverse, the robots, the monsters, and the enormous battles.

Director Guillermo del Toro (the Hellboy movies, Blade 2) recently sat down with Collider to discuss Pacific Rim. This comes on the heels of the news that we'll see a trailer in November or December.
Collider will be releasing part of the hour-long interview each day. In this interview, Guillermo del Toro discusses the reason for a divers cast, the monsters, robots, and huge battles!
On why the cast is divers:
The main drive behind that is that I didn't want a single country saving the earth. I really didn;t want that. I wanted everybody saving the earth. I wanted to have people from every race and color as possible coming together to work as a unit and I felt that it was very important to have the charismatic leader to be played by Idris Elba.
When talking about the robots:
We designed a little over half a dozen Jeagers and they're in the film one way or another but the main four that are there for the body of the movie are Russian, Chinese, Australian and American. We have others but those are the main four.
When talking about the monsters:
We designed about 10 but in the movie not all of them appear as main set pieces. The main Kaiju are about 7 or 8 and there's one that i keep on forgetting but that's gonna be a big surprise.
On why he chose China as a setting for a huge battle:
I felt that one of the things i wanted was a battle in a city that was lit in neon, by fluorescent lights, by colored neon. We're losing the war. There's only one outpost left. I wanted that outpost to be in Hong Kong.

Pacific Rim hits theaters July 12, 2013.
