What would you think of Christian Bale-bailing out of Batman?

I think it's a real possibility and wonder how badly that would hurt the brand.
Okay, so we all know Christopher Nolan is a genius. He revolutionized comic book movies with "Batman Begins" by putting the hero in a real world setting and forcing out a logical plot while incorporating as many elements as possible, from the source material.

While fans saw three different men portray the Dark Knight on-screen, and arguably only ONE of them looking to be a potential Batman (I'm talking about Kilmer here) Bale was an outstanding choice. With his dark features, intense acting, big build and on-screen enthusiasm, viewers were able to finally witness BRUCE WAYNE the way he was meant to be seen.

For many fans, Keaton remains the true Batman. I can't totally agree or disagree. Michael Keaton is a munchkin who was too old to take on the role and was essentially loaning his voice to an avatar. It could have just as easily been CGI to tell you the truth. The only part of Keaton that viewers got to see-that was REALLY Keaton and not excess rubber and foam...was his mouth. While he made Batman menacing, and gave the character tremendous presence, Keaton physically, was a piss-poor choice for the role.

With Kilmer came the man who looked asthetically, closer to the part of Bats/Bruce, however poor writing and directing took the movie in a drastically different direction. Batman no longer was intimindating or threatening. Bruce Wayne seemed more lost in thought than dark and brooding. Finally we saw that bed-wetting-liberal George Clooney take on the role. Man he sucks.

Point is, when Bale took on the title character in the relaunch, viwers were blown away by the movie, especially him. The second movie was just as epic, and had a legendary antagonist which lead to a legendary performance by the late Heath Ledger. Bale was "solid" was one reviewer wrote, but I felt there was something missing.

Now a year and a half later, we await an announcement from WB that will let us all in on the fate of the franchise. From my understanding, there is no definite return scheduled for Bale or Nolan (Bale is contractually obligated for a third but I'm not convinced).

Should Warner Bros decide that they need to move ahead, and cannot secure Nolan and Bale to return, what would then happen? It's obvious Warner Bros would replace the two and commence production on a third installment. However, who would they pick to direct it? I would actually be more worried about the director than the star. Bale did a decent job, but I think we can trade up easily.

Then again, it would irk me badly to have a new player step in for what will likely be the last installment in a trilogy. If it's a supporting character that isn't so hard to get past, but the main man? A "meh" performance by Bale with his punched-in-the-throat-voice is one thing...a Monday Morning QB (is that how the expression goes) stepping in and us trying to convince ourselves it's Bad-Tempered-Bale is a whole other thing.

So what do you guys think? Would you be able to get past it and enjoy a third installment if either or both Bale/Nolan were replaced? And if Bale is gone, who do you think would be the man to replace him?

Thanks for the love LEEEE777, I think I'm slightly prejudice to Kilmer cause he is Doc tho!!

i think the problem now with Bale is that he just lost his desire to become the character once more. In Batman Begins he was efficient and effective. He moves well as the battling Batman, and conveys the emotion that Bruce Wayne has. In TDK however, Bale could not anymore distinguish which one is Bale-Bruce and which one is Bale-Batman...the desire to BE the character (not just act) was not there anymore.
It is really not surprising that many fans still look up to Michael Keaton as the Best Batman to date. He has the vision of what Batman should be. Please don't look at the physical aspect, Keaton is really undermatched...look at his acting and his desire to be the character himself. His was a very unpopular choice at that time, as people wanted a bulky Batman, but there were reasons...and they were proven to be fair reasons in the end.
I wish for Bale to finish the rumored trilogy (with Chris Nolan) of Batman so Henry Cavill or another guy can take up the mantle of the Bat and tie in (hopefully) with the Justice League storyline.
Peace!

i think bale is the best cuz i love his bruce wayne and despite his slurry voice...his batman is that dark intimidating figure that it was meant to be...i didnt like the flashy bats from all previous films....
his drunken tirade in bat begins was classic...
i hope he stays on and nolan finishes his joker arc but if bale bails, i guess my bet would be matthew fox to take over

Well IMO Keaton is and always will be the best Batman until someone else comes along and does one better. Bale was the worst, he acted nothing like Batman, that voice was incredibly irrating and distracted me from the story and he his characterw as an idiot (however some of those factors were Nolan's fault not Bale's) Saying that though I would like to see Bale in the third film to round these films up to a trilogy. After that though, Henry Cavill and the Justice League all the way...

thunderforce - 11/26/2009, 8:02 AM
Val Kilmer would've been a better Hal Jordan.
MovieTheaterLad - 11/26/2009, 8:37 AM
I say sure, go for it. New everybody. It does kind of make one nervous without a tried and true crew. It could be exactly what Battymens needs.
Betty - 11/26/2009, 10:02 AM
matthew fox for batman if bale shoves off
Anil Rickly - 11/26/2009, 10:37 AM
Thanks guys, for continuity's sake I would like to see Bale finish. Matthew Fox would be interesting. I'd like to see Jim Caviezel, though a lot of folks want him for Superman. Interestingly Henry Cavil played his SON in Count of Monte Cristo

Bale is a legend...I dont think Keaton shaved when filming...
GambitAceOfSpades - 11/26/2009, 8:30 PM
lol Bale is far from a legend, he played a good Bruce Wayne, but he was NOT a good Batman. Both movies were great but theres someone better to wear the cowl.

Bale is the best Bruce Wayne/Batman [I'm one of the few people who appreciated his dedication to the role and the intensity he brought to the role, also...the bat-voice was good], Keaton is a close [but not really that close] second.

I would hate it if Bale were replaced for the third outing. If Nolan and Bale don't sign on...they should make the next Batman movie a separate entity.

Also...Kilmer had potential, I think his Bruce Wayne was good but not his Batman for the most part. It wasn't his fault he was working with the wrong director and writers.

TonyDark - 11/27/2009, 12:10 AM
Flames @ Bales Batman comes from a world with no other Superheros, Nolan has said many times that Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman etc.. do not exist in his interpretation, that is why Bales Bman would not fit in a JLA movie.

I would also like to see them make it a Trilogy and i'm willing to wait for Nolan to finish his other projects before he does it, my only concern is that when Nolan finally has time to think of doing a third film he will want a great script otherwise he wont do it. i dont want to have to wait another 2-3 years for him to turn round i say "this is the best script you've got, it's not good enough", i'd rather have a director who can dedicate the time to work constantly with the writers to flesh out a great script over the next 6 months and then push on with that script.

To sum up, i dont want it to be 2014 before somone starts making the next Batman movie because they cant write a good script. i have read many great fan fic's on this site for a Bataman movie, most notably a story with "Calander Man" as the villain, which would not only work in Nolans Universe but would enhace it. I think the fan fic i'm refering to was written by HAWK but i'm not sure, all i remember is how awesome it was, who ever wrote it please post the link in the comments so i can read it again, i cant find it anywhere.

Before Batman Begins I think Keaton's performance, though flawed with his physique and compensated with the suit and a commanding presence that the following two actors lacked, was the standard. Bale/Nolan's interpetaion changed the world that the previous movies existed in, making the two newest movies automatically grittier and more realistic. It lent a feeling of legitimacy to the character that Forever and Bat & Rob eroded with their all too painful direction in the script and directing. I believe the cast to Forever , if given proper direction under a visonary like Nolan, could have been an impressive movie instead of the beginning of the mockery of the Batman franchise. Having said that I do not worship at the feet of Nolan or Bale, especially after his portrayl of John Conner. However I must say that Batman Begins set the tempo for the rebooted franchise with great actors who rose above already exceptional material in a movie that had vision. Bale's performance in Knight was less. That is the best way I can put it. Lacking in the drive and conviction he showed in the first. However the passion remained with the storytelling and the other actors who made up for a Bale who seemed to be on cruise control. With Batman Begins Bale set himself as the defacto Wayne/Batman, but knight merely relied on his previous performance without building on it. I say that Bale and Nolan SHOULD receive the oppourtunity to make the third movie and end out the sequel, however if either of them have lost the passion and desire (as Bale appeared to have in Knight) to make a quality Batman movie that moves the audience, then they SHOULD not return.

Having said that the next Batman/Wayne should be Sam Worthington . . . just kidding!!! We must take into consideration that the actor must be young enough to make at least three movies that could span ten years, so older actors should be set aside, sorry Cavizel fans. The actor must have presence, charisma, and the ability to be physically imposing, not necessarily a particular build, but imposing if you were to meet him in an alley you would not want to mess with him. Bale earned it in Begins. Keaton earned it with his presence in Batman. Not a flaunted power, but a matter of fact. Clooney with nipply suit didn't have a chance. The actor must have the ability to be a frighteningly imposing dark menace, and yet have the ability to portray the two faces of Wayne, the quirky, fun, carefree, playboy Bruce, and the unmasked Batman, brooding without the sulkiness of an emo, the easily seen intelligence of the world's greatest detective, and the haunted shattered remains of a man attempting to hide the tatters of a small boy forced through the most tramatic experience of his life, forced to grow to manhood having lost his innocence with the loss of his parents, a man who wants desperately to have healthy human relationships, but shys away because of both the responsibilty he claimed as protector of Gotham and as a man afraid that through friends he may find the healing and forgiveness he secretly desires that stems from his parents death.

Considering that the dynamic duo of Nolan and Bale has brought the studio it's biggest hit in history, I think they would be incredibly foolish to to jump ahead with out them. True they can be replaced by why would anyone want them to be? I know Bale's voice in TDK was a little over the top but I believe that will be corrected in the next installment given the negative criticism over it. Bale is still by far the best choice for Batman/Bruce Wayne. You need an actor who is just as determined to give the character justice as much as Batman is to fighting crime. He looks and acts as though Batman literally jumped from the comic book pages. With the amazing vision and guidance of Nolan as the director, the next film can't lose. Replace these two and you risk getting another Batman And Robin. Also as the article above pointed out, it would be very uncomfortable to have a new director and lead actor pop in for the last film in a proposed trilogy. It would be distracting and disorientating. Let these guys finish what they have started. If they ask for more time then give it to them. No one should want the next film rushed into production before it's ready. If they ask for a bigger budget then give it to them. You know that every cent of it will be on screen and, judging from the incredible gross of TDK along with the hype for a 3rd film, they can rest assured they will make their money back plus a lot extra.

BALE IS A CLOSE SECOND ALTHOUGH HE IS THE BEST BRUCE WAYNE AND KEATON IS THE BEST BATMAN BUT A GODAWFUL BRUCE WAYNE!!!!!!
Antonio - 12/21/2009, 9:19 AM
Lets keep in mind that there is a huge time difference in these movies. Back when the original Batman was made it was the top notch filming of its time. No CGI or fancy tricks. With Bale, there is much more that film makers use to enhance the film that makes it so much better. Wayne was a dumbass playboy which Keaton did not play... he played a serious Wayne. Bale, in the few Wayne rolls that filmed, was more of the playboy in public.
