Aliens and Predators... Where do we go from here?

With Troublemaker Studios apparently ramping up to reboot the "Predator" franchise, and Sigourney Weaver expressing interest in another "Alien" flick, you have to wonder, what else can be done with stories from those universes?
Okay, in case you fail to read the article listed as my source, in a nutshell, Weaver is in talks with Scott about a fifth installment in the "Alien" franchise. Departing from the previous stories however, this one may not feature the "Alien(s)" alien and instead take Ripley on a new journey. Now let me be up front and say that I haven't really heard much about this in a few months, but thought it would be cool to write about, so it is possible that I've missed something in the news since then. Anyway...the problem with "Aliens" (and by that I mean the entire franchise barring "AVP") is that after the insanely awesome "Aliens" movie in '86, they made a HORRIBLE sequel in the early 90's that pretty much ruined EVERYTHING that made the first two great.

For instance, Weaver took on the monstrous Aliens in the first two films with without thinking twice...but in this one, she seemed timid amongst HUMAN criminals. Granted they were degenerate rapists and murderers, for the woman who beat the $hit out of a super-sized Alien-Queen with an exo-skeleton in the the middle of space, those guys she should have been able to eat for breakfast. Then there was the fact that she beds the prison doctor in no time, after not putting out for Cpl Hicks in the last movie after two hours of tension. Speaking of Hicks, he's gone, so is Newt. They die...off-screen...after Ripley has to kick a million alien asses to save them. All that's left of her original posse is Bishop who's basically dismembered.

Then there's the fact that she basically loses in the end, after all that fighting, she loses. In a what I guess was supposed to be a dramatic moment she kills the alien that sprouted from her by killing herself. It was ridiculous. The whole movie actually was ridiculous. So in a pre-reboot age, what is there to do? Well, fast forward 200 years and CLONE the main character and feature her as an alien/human hybrid. Oh yeah, and there's a gang bang scene featuring Ripley and her former prey getting all kinds of freaky. That would have been OKAY if it wasn't for the fact that it basically dug the franchise into an even BIGGER hole.

So, what to do next? Reboots are very played out. VERY. And on top of that, I don't think the fans or Weaver want to see Ripley played by another. Which means they either continue with a sub-par story or do the whole dues ex machine thing where the third and fourth movies never occurred. THEN there's the fact that Aliens have moved on to a new series with predator, which isn't very good. I dunno what the status of a third installment in the "Alien VS Predator" franchise is, but I'd rather skip it. But I AM curious to know how a FIFTH alien movie would affect "AVP".

And finally there's Robert Rodriguez. The guy who directed "Desperado" and a few other badass flicks. He wants to REBOOT the Predator franchise, or so I've heard. But that seems a little stupid since they JUST put the last "AVP" movie out about a year and a half ago! So how would THIS affect the other movies?

No one hates to see classic film cheapened with crappy sequels more than I do, but at the same time, you have to know when to let go. Maybe in many years they could revisit those two great franchises, but in the meantime, move on to other things and try to create NEW ideas and entertainment, instead of retreading old waters.

i completely agree. live and let die. the originals were really good. I mean they were awful. But they were amazing. If that makes sense? I don't get why hollywood wants to keep ruining classic movies. Crow, last house on the left. friday the thirteenth. I mean, tons of great movies. getting raped by the money machines. Its a sad thing really

ya come up with something new instead or just doing remakes, is there really no one in hollywood with imagination any more? I never got into aliens, the first predator was horribly awesome, which can be said for a lot of old 80s movies, i completely understand what you are saying joslezio, so terrible you cant stop laughing but at the same time it makes it awesome, like snakes on a plane. Hollywood needs to come up with some new material.

predator: amazing movies
alien: shit movies
AvP: shit movies

clearly they should only make another Predator if they have to make any at all (which they dont)
the alien movies suck

What!? No chance avenger, First predator movie was great but they should have stopped there. First two Alien movies where works of pure genious. First one was an artistic masterpiece. Second one was just completely kick ass. Fair enough third was crap and fourth was just okay. AVP yup pure shite.

Anyway in my opinion I'd rather go see a revamp than a sequel of predator cause i dont think it's aged the best and I'd rather see a sequel of alien that is going in a different direction than a revamp cause i cant see them improving on whats already been done, why not try something new.

I did enjoy all the Aliens & Predators movies. But for once, If they are going to do an another AVP, do it in space & give more background or history on both species. And also take Predator 3 off world as well. Sigourney doesn't need to be a main character. Its been played out all ready. Maybe a cameo or something. Besides they killed Bishop Wallen in the 2 & 3 already.

I gotta throw this out...(speil begins) I liked Alien 3 better than Aliens.
I know... crazy. Hear me out.
In part one she was a tough acting character with her crew but she was scared sh!#less the entire movie when it came to the aliens (as would be anyone). The original is a horror work of art. It was well acted, directed and a hell of a mark was made in the genre.

Aliens; the movie was a good sci-fi-action-horror malage, and a hell of a sequel. The characters were fun but pretty one sided, and despite the kick a$$ nature, it was much more typical as a genre film than the original was. Done hella well, ala Cameron (who used the same basic idea for his other hit during that time, T2; add a kid, add more badguys = success), but it wasn't as good as the first (in either case).

Part three roles around. OK, killing the rest of the crew was really lame. It was a dues ex machina. It was a mistake. Beyond that, I thought that the third was a better movie than the second. They took ripley out of her element, put her on an island of violent men. She maintained her character but it's easier to be a badass with a fully auto-machine gun that has an attached flame thrower. It returned to the quiet terror of the original only this time, she's in danger from the people as much as the alien. Also, ripley is the only one you really care about this time... and she dies. I thought it was tragic, but pretty surprising. And it was f*&%ing Fincher at the helm. Love that guy.

Four was a cool sci fi film, but it was probably the poorest of the bunch, despite a great director. The script was just a lot weaker.
Give me Ripley with no aliens. I'm all for it, just don't call it Alien, because that's kind of dumb. Just don't give me Ripley with more aliens, because that's stretching it.

Also. There is never a reason to reboot any of these. The whole idea of a franchise like this is that it's easy to make sequels/prequels. The only reason a director like rodriguez would want to reboot these is because they're so egotistical that they think they could change the rules, the look and the idea of the originals for the better. Which is always a good idea, right? Why fix what doesn't need it? It wouldn't be hard to keep Alien in the same continuity. Space is a big place. Or a prequel. When did the Company first learn of the aliens? They seemed to know about them, at least by myth, even in the first one.

Predator deserves a good sequel too, rather than a reboot. Someone should take that up. Hell, you could make a great prequel with that one too, go back in time. Why reboot? Just so you can give the predator chains and a cape? WTF. Then again, AVP was terrible. So it's probably just a matter of talentless tennis jockeys owning the rights and not knowing what to do with them. Does fox own both of these? That would make sense.

Coats...I heard you out and...It's great to have someone to have some back-and-fourth with. I agree with you in principle about Alien 3, the whole "taking Ripley" out of her element and having her be the only one you truly care about. I can respect that. However, I still think it was lame to go there when you could have a much better story with her on the lam from the Aliens AND the company. I mean, poor Hicks deserved the nookie and after Ripley whooped the Bitch's ass with the fork-lift, Newt's execution deserved reprieve. As much as I like the idea of a NEW set of bad guys taking on Ripley, or vice-versa, I don't like the idea of it being a clone. The snarky, super-strong mutant from "Resurrection" is not the blue-collar balls-to-the-wall heroine from I and II. I cant root for her. I mean...she got gang banged by a horde of aliens in Resurrection. I just can't imagine where to go from here. I'd rather see a dues ex machina and have Ripley and Hicks and Newt resume their storyline as lame as that sounds, because at least I'll CARE about them. I don't CARE about a clone...y'know?

neither needs sequels just no avp stuff and no more ripley(sucks i know) but the one dude was right these movies never have to be rebooted maybe not the human stuff but let both franchises be seperated as well as unified. i will miss lt ripley she was the last survivor of the nostromo guys!
dellamorte1872 - 4/7/2009, 5:15 PM
I say look to Dark Horse comics for inspiration. I'd like a predator film minus the humans.
iNsaneMilesy - 4/9/2009, 1:00 AM
To true iNsane the dark horse comics where fantastic.. It wouldn't take a genies to read one and come up with a better story line then the other 2 avp disasters..

What they should do is show Ripley (clone) tracking down 'Alien' ships when she stumbles across a 'Predator' ship. After poking around a little, she realizes that the predator species are much more dangerous because they can hide in plain sight and have advanced weapons. As she makes her way around the ship, fighting predators, she understands the relationship between the aliens and predators and decides that they both have to go. So she crashes the ship into a star and at the end of the movie it is unclear whether or not she made it to an escape pod in time. Show them being deployed automatically by the ship's computer as it approaches the star.

Maybe she narrates a little bit, and at the end we see that we are actually listening to the ship's log or something.

End it at that. no more sequels. no more spin offs!

aliens sucked? this is news to me. i think avp would've been much better if it didnt follow the stories of the humans involved. they should've just been casualties to the alien war. i want predator vs batman but thats never gonna happen. and if it did it would suck so much a$$
