Top 25 Horror/Suspense Films

Aside from being a comic book/CBM fan, I'm also a huge follower of the horror film genre. I have compiled a list of my Top 25 favorite horror films.
Here you have them, in decsending order. Some of them are odd choices and may not be popular, but I enjoyed them none-the-less. Enjoy!

nice but some of your picks are more so thriller than horor like Silence of the Lambs and The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Alien is a sci-fi

Impressive list. I'm shocked that you picked Night Of The Living Dead, instead of Dawn Of The Dead. Halloween elevated the slasher genre up to new heights, so naturally i'm glad that you put it up there. Not sure that Se7en is a horror film. Dr. Caligari was the original Frankenstein to me, and i'm glad that i'm not the only person who remembers it. And who could forget Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece. Mighty fine list.

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't label the list as just horror, but some of those are just amazing films and will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

@Supermario- Dawn of the Dead is great as well, but Night of the Living Dead has a special place for me...it was one of the first horror films I ever watched and it's still a favorite to watch.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD IS MY FAVORITE HORROR MOVIE! ITS HISTORIC IT STARTED THE "ZOMBIE" GENRE. PLUS I LIVE CLOSE TO A CEMETERY AND OBVIOUSLY LOVE "CENETERY MAN" LOL

@SHHH- The Descent was good, but it just doesn't do it for me. Frailty I saw a while back and it too was good. The Exorcist...to be honest...its a scary show, but I kinda think it's over-rated. Blasphemy, I know.

@TheUnknown- Never saw The Wicker Man actually. The other two were good shows as well.

It was actually really hard to put these films in order to be honest with you, harder than you'd think. The horror/suspense genres have really done a lot for the film industry and have created some of the best films out there.

@ecksmanfan - Yeah, night of the living dead, did set up the zombie genre, so it does make sense to have that on the list. It's just that most people i know prefer dawn of the dead. (me included). Paranormal activity is another really good horror film

Not a bad list, I'm glad you got Event Horizon in there, that movie rules! Also, Sphere is a nice mind f^ck, and Rosemary's Baby is a bad ass movie too. Strangers is freakin' sweet, I love all the Living Dead movies, except Land of the Dead.

SupermariowworldE, which Dawn of the Dead do you like? The most recent or the original. I love Snyder's but the original kicked major ass.

Just a few random comments:

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, awesome, I loved this! I think it's where Tim Burton got his style from.

I love that you put Event Horizon, Se7en, Freaks, Jaws, The Shining, and Blair Witch on there.

The only one I dont agree with is 30 Days of Night. It at no point made me even a little nervous. The end was highly convoluted imo. The only thing I did like was the creature design. Actually the creature design was pretty scary to me so I take that back.

I am a HUGE fan of Frailty so I wish that was on there. That was Bill Paxton's directorial debut and I have to say it was a great one!

Tea, I like your list. What is "The Devil Rides Out"?

I think the new film "Anti Christ" should start to clime these lists.

Betty@ Its an old 60's Hammer Movie starring Christopher Lee.....classic and one of the greats imo :)

@Betty- The creature design on 30 Days of Night is exactly why I put it on my list. Freaked me out!

The Emily Rose film is interesting. It was different than I expected in that part of the film deals with the court case that followed the exorcism (based on actual events, by the way). Jennifer Carpenter did everything in that movie. No dummies were used when she contorts her body, no CGI on her face. One of the cameramen swears to this day that she was actually possessed during portions of the film. My opinion is that the film is quite under-rated. Has a great cast as well; Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Colm Feore.

Great list! I liked 30 days of night if, for no other reason, than it made vampires scary and grotesque again instead of the pretty pomp of twilight and vampire chronicles. The cinematography was very well done too, as well as the lighting. The story was my only beef... it wasnt bad in any sense, just a litle lackluster considering the fantastic set up they had going.

@Shadowelfz- Thank You! I totally agree with you about the prissy-little girl friendly-poptart versions of a vamp. Give me Bram Stokers Dracula any day.

Haha no prob fingers. I have to say, Bram Stokers Dracula is by far my favorite vampire movie because it shows vampires in their dark, grotesque glory. Sure, it makes sense for vampires to want to be pretty and social (they are predators after all and often need to do some carousing to get their food), but underneath that glossy veneer is a true monster, as evidence by Oldemens Dracula in the beginning, as well as his wolfmen and batmen forms. Vampires are grotesque frightning monsters in their true form, and by taking that away in Twilight and other vampire-posure shows and movies, they are taking away the intrinsic horror of the vampire, replacing it with something more pop-like than scary.

Bram Stoker's Dracula was epic! Oldman's portrayal of Dracula was awesome, in any form. Keanu Reeves...not so much.

Speaking of Frankenstein =), one of my favorite portrayals of that character is Shuler Hensley's version in Van Helsing. I know, it's odd, but I thought that version was cool.

Yeah, that was horrible. Some parts of that movie were really cool, but for the most part...crap.

Yeah Keanu's acting was pretty consistent with all his roles... consinstantly bad. Still I don't mind seeing him on film, but theres no denying hes lacking in the acting skills department

Its funny that you bring up Frankenstein. He was always may favorite of the old-school monsters. Not sure why, he just creeped me out. I thought Van Helsings Frank was cool, definately my favorite character...except maybe kate Beckinsale ;) One of my guilty pleasures, though, is Kenneth Brannaghs Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. For some reason I just love that movie.
