Joss Whedon had expressed interest in directing the new Star Wars film, but he is not going to run Star Wars episode VII because of the sequel of the third highest grossing film of all time The Avengers. The interviewer asked him what characters he would bring back from the original series and what he would want to see.

"You know, I wouldn't go back, I'd go forward. I would want to create characters that would resonate the way they did." "But that's, you know I mean not I wouldn't want to see them, I'd be excited to, but I also feel like um I'd want to explore very different part of that universe."

The interviewer also asked Joss Whedon about the rumor of a potential Han solo standalone film. "No, that I'd never wanna do, some things may not be rebooted." Joss Whedon said.

Yeah keep to AVENGERS :P

He would be awesome at Star Wars but cant have too much on your Hollywood plate!

Yeah agreed, never reboot STAR WARS... Hell if they ever remake the original trilogy, I'm personally done with Hollywood!

Cant wait for 2015...

AVENGERS 2, STAR WARS Episode 7 and (fingers crossed) JUSTICE LEAGUE!!!

Omg that's going to be the biggest year ever for blockbusters movies, maybe never that big again!

@ LEE777

Well only The Avengers 2 is certain to be released in 2015. Star Wars VII is maybe and JL... Well maybe in 2017 at the earliest.
LEEE777 - 3/9/2013, 3:07 AM
IRON @ True, but its good to hope for the best! :p

Ahhh I thought STAR WARS 7 was... my bad.
IronDean2099 - 3/9/2013, 3:07 AM
Well said.
DeanVanHalen - 3/9/2013, 4:13 AM
To be honest, I wouldn't mind if they rebooted it all. Remake the original trilogy as close to the original as possible, get rid of the incest and the Ewoks, finally wash away the stink of the prequels and just start over
INSTANTJUSTICE - 3/9/2013, 4:24 AM

Just remake the prequels.

IIIAdamantiumIII - 3/9/2013, 4:28 AM
Meh he got lucky with Avengers... I cannot stand his Tv style cinematography, which was very blatant at times during the Avengers.
BIGBMH - 3/9/2013, 4:53 AM
@Adamantium, the guy is a good writer. nothing lucky about that.
darkmetal - 3/9/2013, 4:55 AM
Once again he makes perfect logical sense.
But really up until 1999 future Star Wars films were like the dream all fanboys had and couldnt wait to see.
Fast forward to 2012. 3 mediocre prequels and the never ending Clone Wars crap and Star Wars means less than a Twilight film.
No one can build it back to where it was before the prequels.
1. Vader was turned into a crying baby. His motive to become a Sith was he missed his Mommy and therefor didnt want to lose Padme.

2. Yoda became a very bad puppet then bad CGI and not all that powerful or wise.

3. Palpatine became a silly goofball Power Ranger badguy and laughed like a Green Goblin wannabe.

4. The Jedi were rumored to be powerful in Episodes 4-6 but in the prequels they became virgin monks dedicated to lives of masturbation in their temple.
The Jedi also were reduced to a being weirdos with E.S.P. who really lacked the imagination to use it properly.

5. The Heart Of Star Wars: 'The Force' was changed from a mysterious mystical energy field to a totally scientific occurrence involving 'Midichlorians'.

WTF are some of you guys talking about? Rebooting something as great as TOT is out of the question. It's like rebooting the godfather series, there's no need.
SpectacularJoShFest - 3/9/2013, 5:01 AM
Whedon knows what he's saying. I get it...I'm a SW fan...I can't stand the prequels and believe me,I don't want to see the same characters making a comeback just to please fans. That's what [frick]ed the prequels up. The idea of Vader was interesting enough without knowing what his past was. And goes the same for Luke,Leia and Han, we don't need to know what happens after Return of the Jedi. It's not movie-material.If anyone wants to know what happened:Extended Universe.
I'm really not hating on the fans who like the prequels and Clone Wars or are excited about seeing the original cast coming back for the next movies.I'm more excited about the stand-alone movies than Episodes VII-VIII-IX, and so is Whedon as far as I can tell.

@FriendlyJoShFest That's a great way of looking at it. And it was Lucas who started the whole idea of SW7 featuring Old versions of those great characters.

And though he wont direct it, SW 7 will diminish Episodes 4-6. 4-6 will now be 4-7.
In effect by following the lead of Lucas, they are continuing his destruction of Star Wars.
The best thing they could do is to drop his ideas COMPLETELY. And do what Whedon and others suggest by not continuing those characters.

They need to distance themselves from current ideas by Lucas and move on.
Any idea from George Lucas is a bad idea. If he says 'Walk to the right'-run to the left.

I bet FIREFLY would have been more successful if it had been called (MILLENNUM) FALCON and given a more PG sensibility.
Rowsdower - 3/9/2013, 5:36 AM
YOU HAVE TO BRING BACK BOBA FETT
JamesClement - 3/9/2013, 5:53 AM
Can't argue with any of that.
ShadowOfTheWeb - 3/9/2013, 6:14 AM
spot on.
ClaireLannister2016 - 3/9/2013, 6:32 AM
Good. I like it how he says he would move star wars FORWARD. It seems now a days some fans dont want it to move forward but instead just stay in the past *like they dont want new things they just want to see the old things over again*. I want Star wars 7 to be NEW, not rehashing old things just for nostalgia/fan service sake *which means no god damn OT cast as the main leads, time for new characters*.
nach1wan - 3/9/2013, 6:52 AM
he's excellent at everything he touches, but if he were to direct some star wars episode, expect half of the cast to die horribly for no reason at all =)
nach1wan - 3/9/2013, 6:53 AM
if they dont focus too much on the original characters, new ones could be developed just as well... easier said than done though
Godzillafart - 3/9/2013, 8:19 AM
He's absolutely correct. A solo Han Solo film is a terrible idea.
ThePowerCosmic - 3/9/2013, 8:52 AM
JCameron

Since you hate Whedon so much, why would you even click on this article?

Oh, wait I know why, to complain about Caps suit, like you do in almost every thread.
MarvelLight - 3/9/2013, 9:20 AM
I don't think it's a bad thing to bring back the old characters. I imagine the plan is to kill them all off in the first movie. It'll establish the threat for the series.
ckal - 3/9/2013, 9:57 AM
Mrmxy-

It would have been hard to [frick] up the avengers and most directors could have done what Whedon did?

That's a silly statement.

On topic: a Han Solo movie is a terrible idea. It would obviously be an origin story, and this is exactly where Hollywood goes wrong; things are over done. Harrison ford already made an icon out of the character so anyone else who would play Han would instantly be lesser than the original. Also, Han is a character that is much cooler not knowing everything about his past, just like wolverine....or Darth Vader. And if we are force fed all the details of their younger life, it seriously diminishes the character. [frick]ing horrible idea and I hope it never gets made.

About ep7, I agree they should've use original cast members.
ckal - 3/9/2013, 9:59 AM
Shouldn't use*
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/9/2013, 10:03 AM
Disney, take some notes, THIS IS A GOOD PLAN.
darkmetal - 3/9/2013, 10:07 AM
George Lucas discussing his Sex Tape and how he wants to enhance it digitally thus creating a Special Edition Sex Tape.
nld3 - 3/9/2013, 10:50 AM
I agree Han Solo played by someone else. Just not into it! It would just be another prequel and a disappointment.
nld3 - 3/9/2013, 11:04 AM
I think some here don't seem to understand what Joss is saying. He's saying no to that Solo idea but yes to Episodes 7-9. Maybe he could direct Episode 9. He has to be careful he does work for Disney.
billytwohats - 3/9/2013, 12:20 PM
You have to include some of the original cast or have characters that are linked to the original trilogy as it parts 7, 8 & 9 of a 9 part saga so the story has to be linked somehow. I agree that the Jedi are nothing more than space hippies now and the force has been raped. However I'm glad JJ Abrams is directing he was my number 1 pick.
Azazel1 - 3/9/2013, 12:35 PM
SOOOOO glad Joss Whedon is not directing Star Wars

JJ Abrahms is a FAR better choice...
Azazel1 - 3/9/2013, 12:36 PM
@thepowercosmic- You mean you like Caps suit?

Caps suit is the worst costume in comic book movie history....
ThePowerCosmic - 3/9/2013, 1:05 PM
JCameron

Ouch! That was a cheap shot!

I'm even more hurt they have Galactus too.
ThePowerCosmic - 3/9/2013, 1:16 PM
Azazel1

I agree he looked way better in CA:TFA, but the worst in CBM history is a huge exaggeration.

Hallie Barries Catwoman, Wolverine's Deadpool, X-Mens Toad and Sabretooth were all far worst.

Cap had my least favorite costume in the Avengers, but Overall I didnt think it was that bad, especially when the headpiece was off.
kemuael - 3/9/2013, 4:49 PM
spot on again from mr whedon if he'd directed star wars i might actually go to watch it in IMAX.
Crossbones - 3/9/2013, 5:22 PM
I like Cap's suit in all the MCU movies so far.

Anyways on the topic of Star Wars. I've never liked them nor have I found them interesting. Boring is more the word for it. I appreciate what it did on the technological side of film but, that's it. I never liked Star Trek either until the 2009 movie and that's it. I'm glad they rebooted Star Trek and I hope Star Wars does the same and actually becomes good and interesting.
