I've recently got finish watching The Avengers and noticed something at the end of the film regarding Agent Coulson. As we all know Agent Coulson was killed by Loki but Clark Gregg is set to reprise his role as Phil Coulson in the new S.H.E.l.L.D t.v series this fall (the S.H.E.I.L.D t.v show is set to happen right after The Avengers defeat the Chatari.) This left many fans speculating how Agent Coulson will come back from the dead. Well I think I've noticed something quick at the end, now i’m not sure exactly but let me know what you think…

Again the S.H.E.I.L.D show is set to happen right after The Avengers defeat the Chatari. So, what do you think?

Could be

Definitely not Coulson. If you watch that guy in higher resolution he wears glasses and a mustache. Maybe for misdirection, but that a would seem a little bit like a waste.

This is a pretty old theory that's been talked about before so I'm moving this to features.

Again, if they're going to have it where Coulson didn't really die, they're going to SHOW that, or at least leave some serious doubt in the audience's mind in the end. Not a blink-and-you-miss-it passing shot, or even simply "oh, Fury lies...so he lies about EVERYTHING" etc.

Whedon already said that Coulson really did die, and that he's being brought BACK in SHIELD.

I think it's Coulson. Good eye. Maybe it isn't, but Coulson is alive in S.H.I.E.L.D.

"If you watch that guy in higher resolution he wears glasses and a mustache"

This is completely true. I watched the bluray just now on a 67" screen. The actor looks more like Will Forte than Clark Gregg. Totally different hair/hairline, has a mustache, and does wear glasses.

Seems more like a producer cameo than anything else.

Coulson is being brought back as the first Life Model Decoy. That's how they'll introduce the technology to the Marvel universe.

I'd take a magical resurrection over that. The LMD has always been an incredible cheat in the comics, and I can do without it in the movies/show.

Coulson's death/resurrection needs to be handled VERY carefully. If death is no longer a consequence, then it strips all the peril out of future stories. Yinsen and Howard Stark can appear in Iron Man 4!

Could be, but... it could also be any random SHIELD agent. Still good eye. Never noticed this before.

I agree with Luminus
marvel72 - 3/27/2013, 12:52 PM
looks too tall to be coulson.
ruadh - 3/27/2013, 12:58 PM
It's already disproven. Watch the scene on a real tv.
Luminus - 3/27/2013, 2:44 PM
@ruadh: Why? Saddam Hussein had decoys (real ones), why not S.H.I.E.L.D.?
ruadh - 3/27/2013, 2:51 PM
Like I said, it's a cheat.

"Oh, it's okay, he's not really dead...that was a decoy!"

Imagine if Tony Stark had died at the end of Avengers. And then Iron Man 3 comes out, and it turns out that wasn't really Tony Stark. It takes away ALL threat, because they can just erase the death. No one is going to care about what happens to Tony Stark after that, because you know he can't die...because it's probably another decoy. It's just a lame cheat, and any writer can do what ever they want because it's easily undone in the next film.

I get that this is exactly how comics work, but this is movies. And we don't need the exact same things that are wrong with the comics (characters never really dying being a serious one) bleeding into the movies.

The main reason movies are different from comics, from a storytelling perspective, is that comics are monthly stories. The writers have to turn out a ton of material every year, and often they need to steer the stories back to status quo, which means resurrecting people that were important to the main character that were killed off now and then. Movies, you're going to get at most a handful of stories. Death NEEDS to have weight.
Luminus - 3/27/2013, 6:00 PM
^No. I'm saying that the new Coulson is a decoy.
ruadh - 3/27/2013, 6:04 PM
Got it. Still a cheat.
Luminus - 3/27/2013, 6:18 PM
Laugh out loud. Geesh, really CBM? You're regulating how much text we can post, now? I can't do this anymore, either:

WTF?
SpideyQuad - 3/27/2013, 6:26 PM
Not sure what to make of this. If Coulson is a regular human, and he has resuscitated in a medical lab I would think it would be sometime before he was sufficiently healed from his wounds.

On the other hand if he is indeed an LMD anything is possible. The above has been done multiple times since the late 70s in the comics.

"The above has been done multiple times since the late 70s in the comics."

Totally true, but this isn't a comic.

Alive on the show, dead in the movie.

e. g. see here (page 4 of 6)

But yeah still I think this might have been Coulson hinting that he never actually died.

"I think this might have been Coulson hinting that he never actually died."

Seriously, you guys need to pop the bluray in and watch this on a decent sized screen. After doing so myself, I cannot believe anyone would mistake this for Clark Gregg.
SupermanReturns2 - 4/2/2013, 7:15 AM
Luminus: I think the LMD scenario was introduced when Stark playfully hint at it when Coulson paid he and Pepper a visit at Stark Tower... Thereby setting up it's usage for the future... Subtle, yet effective.
