Nick Fury And His Howling Commandos Influenced Inglorious Basterds

Director Quentin Tarantino has revealed that the Marvel comic book was one of the movie's main inspirations!
"The Basterds are kind of comic booky," Tarantino told MTV News.

"A big influence on the Basterds was Marvel Comics' Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. That was definitely an influence on that flick."

lunk

What did you think of Inglorious Basterds? With the similarities between Tarantino's ragtag, scalp-hunting Basterds and Sgt. Fury's wartime crew would you like to see the director handle a movie adaptation of Nick Fury's WWII adventures?

; D
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 3:18 PM
lee- which is your favorite fury?
flames809 - 11/24/2009, 3:21 PM
CLASSIC FURY!! Of course, the ULTIMATE one sucks!!
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 3:37 PM
SWEET!

Oi, LEEE: Enlighten me because I truly don't know, but isn't the Ultimate Fury just like the classic except for being a black fellow?

I never read the Ultimates.
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 3:43 PM
This is Nick Fury (to me)..and always will be!
Photobucket

Ultimate fury is OK, and Jackson does a good job at playing him(I hope) but the original is ALWAYS the best.
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 3:44 PM
MarVell- Yes, but he also has a whole different origin
in "ultimate universe" he was a part of the
super soldier projects and was actually
injected with the serum!
READ THIS COMIC IT SAYS IT ALL!!
Photobucket

Sorry LEE I beat you too it! LOL
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 3:46 PM
Personally, I wasnt a huge fan of Inglorious Basterds - it was a good movie but I just dont think all that much of Taratino as a director even though some of his past stuff has been decent!

LEE: I prefer the regular Fury as well but not only is Sam Jackson a great actor but the character in The Ultimates was drawn to look him (his wife even contacted Bryan Hitch after for a piece of artwork featuring Fury to give to Jackson on his birthday!) I think they made a good choice casting SLJ as Fury - its not as if they just changed the characters race for the sake of it as they've seemingly done with Heimdell in Thor! :P
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 3:46 PM
MarVell: You're missing out! The Ultimates are basically more realistic versions of the classic Avengers characters but set in our world! Ultimates 1 & 2 are two brilliant graphic novels (with excellent art by Bryan Hitch) and you should definitely go out and buy them! LEE will tell you that they're crap but only because he cant accept them as different versions of the classic characters! ;)

JoshW - 11/24/2009, 3:49 PM
josh- YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!! LOL!
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 3:51 PM
just watched Basterds again last week - such an epic film. That movie will go down as one of the best of all time - wait for it mofos - Academy Awards are headed it's way - up the ass. It's being heavily favored this year.

as for Black Fury over White Fury? I could give a sh!t less. Personally Jackson on film is a good time - I can see in the comics why this might be odd - but fcuk it. Leee's a racist. lol. Good ol' Uncle Racist Leee.
Keven - 11/24/2009, 4:02 PM
I prefer normal Nick Fury but the Ultimate ones fine. I hate the Ultimates themselves though, just take everything great about a character (like Hulk) and forget it. Instead of making Hulk a complex, misunderstood hero they tuirned him into some brute supervillain...thats pretty sh!t...HATE Ultimate Thor, I like Ultimate Iron Man and Cap..the rest are meh. I hope the Avengers movie won't be inspired by Ultimates too much...Hulk as the villain is probably the worst thing that could happen to that movie.
Ryden - 11/24/2009, 4:07 PM
Dude Inglorious Bastards was one of the best movies this year. It was so intense and bloody.

I like the Ultimates, everything felt more realistic. Cap and Iron Man were the coolest.

@Ryden- i agree Hulk shouldn't be the villan, but them recruiting him could be a side plot of the movie.
BatmanKnight - 11/24/2009, 4:21 PM
Ryden: I get your points but The Ultimates were supposed to be different - if they hadnt changed the characters then there would have been no point in the title existing! Though i prefer the regular Hulk, I found the Ultimate take on the character to be pretty interesting especially how different Banner was! :) I also hope the movies arent too influenced by them though - I want an Avengers movie, not an Ultimates movie! Some aspects like Cap's costume and him finding it hard to fit into the modern world would be ok but I'd rather they stick closer to teh classic characters!

BatmanKnight: I dunno, I actually found it a little boring in places! :P The scenes that were suposed to be tense (like the first part of the movie in the cottage) just dragged on too long until I was sitting there just wishing they'd get to the point already, lol! The action was great though and some parts of the movie (such as the bar scene with Michael Fassbender pretending to be a German) were brilliant!
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 4:22 PM

That would've been the best ever [frick]ing FURY!!!

Instead we gotta have a crappy photo copied one, with a guy who plays the same [frick]ing character virtually in every movie role, "No snakes on this plane!" : D
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 4:35 PM
i like ultimate fury better
Denn1s - 11/24/2009, 4:41 PM
Don't dis Jackson! He may do any damn movie for the money but the dude can act up a storm when he wants to..Ultimate Fury is the same character! They barley altered him at all except for the color of his skin so why like one and not the other?..Unless your Leee, who just hates everything Ultimate. He;s probably never even read em:)

Inglorius Basterds was excellent. Sure Tarantino gets a bit self indulgent, but nobody sets the scene like him. personally I could have watched that opening scene for another 20 mins!
RorMachine - 11/24/2009, 4:45 PM
@Josh- yeah the beginning scene was kind of long. But it payed off to see that happen lol. I'm not crazy don't worry lol. Michael Fassenbender was definitely one of the coolest people in that movie.

@Lee- Dude you casted Willis for Sgt. Rock lol. He cant be everyone. We dont want another Ryan Renolds.
BatmanKnight - 11/24/2009, 4:48 PM
BTW, Josh, keven, and LEEE777, I am DarthMulder, I just changed names.

Anyway my thing about the Ultimates is this: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't need a "new version" because I like the old one just fine. And as for the claim that it's more realistic, well that's a specious argument at best. I mean it's a COMIC BOOK. Realism is good, but sometimes the regular U has realism also, especially these days.

I agree with peterparker420. The original is usually better.
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 4:51 PM
Leee: Agree 100% about using the REAL Nick Fury, not the Ultimates one. I just don't care for seeing a great character with a rich history downgraded to a ripoff of a popular actor.

And if I wanted REALISM, I wouldn't be reading a COMIC BOOK. The fantasy element of people with fantastic and impossible powers doing battle is a large part of the FUN of comics to me. If I want REALISM, I'll go to a news site. Comics are an ESCAPE from all the crap that's going on in the world.
comicb00kguy - 11/24/2009, 5:06 PM
Josh...i just finished reading that. I bought it and i downloaded it. Issues i know but it was definitely worth the space and money.
Inglorious Basterd....didn't care much for the scalping but im a die hard Tarantino fan so i pretty much think everything he does is Gold.
And yeah...Eli Roth was the best part of that movie.
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 5:09 PM
Exactly, realisim ruins the plot...it becomes less exciting.
Ryden - 11/24/2009, 5:14 PM
DarthMul..I mean MarVell..great name change!!

MsKyle- tarantino..the man! I too am a die hard fan
of Tarantino, I've seen everyone of his movies
I also am a HUGE fan of Eli Roth.
CABIN FEVER, the first movie Eli directed
is super EPIC! go see it if you haven't seen it!
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 5:18 PM
HELL YEAH comicBookguy!!!! And exactly man 100% True!!!!

MarVell @ i mean DARTH MULDER why lol????

And [frick]ing ULTIMATE characters poluting the MARVEL movies is as bad as the CRAP FOX makes!!!

It's called....

SELLING OUT!

; P

LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 5:21 PM
Thank [frick] we're not getting that ULTIMATE [frick]ING THOR!!!

: D
LEEE777 - 11/24/2009, 5:22 PM
same here Parker. The violence, the language...i just love it. I started watching cabin Fever but i stopped halfway. But i did watch Hostel 1 & 2 and i loved it.
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 5:23 PM
The bastards was a great movie, but i have to agree that bruce willis would have been the best casting for fury...
PhillyHulk - 11/24/2009, 5:24 PM
Leee, its called...INSANITY! lol, how the hell is it selling out? They just started a new brand from the characters, no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to read them,,the classic comics are still there! So how is it "polluting" them? Its offering an alternative thats all..you don't like it, don't read it. The movies are just another take on the characters..like the Ultimate line. So, let them pick and choose if thats what works best. Personally I prefer Ultimate Cap, Thor and Pym..but thats just me. The Ultimates are not necessarily more realistic, just a bit grittier and more hard hitting. I do prefer the classics for the most part, but I read both on occasion. The new Ultimate Avengers by mark Millar is very good.
RorMachine - 11/24/2009, 5:32 PM
@ LEEE: I just don't want to be a Sith Lord, my man. It's just not me.

wow... just listen to all this. People are so divided about the Ultimates. Well personally I don't hate them, but I also don't need them.

Ror says Ultimate Fury is the same and that's cool. I would have rather them gone classic but since he's the same dude but just with a different skin color I guess I can live with it. I saw that cartoon movie Ultimate Avengers and he certianly ACTED like the classic Fury.

I think Im gonna go get some Ben n Jerry's and think about it lol
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 5:43 PM
@ peterparker thank you sir
DarthMulder - 11/24/2009, 5:45 PM
MsKyle- OH NO! you gotta keep watching!..
hostle 1 and 2 is a must watch!!
who doesn't like hostel 1 and 2! LOL!

MarVell- NOT A PROBLEM!

*wow I use alot of exclamation points* LOL
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 5:45 PM
Siths rule.
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 5:47 PM
lol...parker...i dunno...i saw a scene where the chick was shaving her legs and she shaved her skin...oh no thank You. I don't scare easily but shit like creeps me out.
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 5:48 PM
@Rorschach -- Maintaining two separate, ongoing continuities dilutes the brand as a whole. Tough to get new fans involved when they find out that they can't expect even remotely consistent characterization and back story in most cases from one title to the next, sometimes even within the mainstream MU, much less adding Ultimate MU to the mix. It then makes it harder for people who aren't fanboys but are making the movies to choose what storylines and elements to use in the CBMs we all want. We wind up with a mish-mash of elements that don't go together but Hollywood types think will look cool. Look no farther than X3 for how kinda thing turns out. That's probably part of why LEEE doesn't like it, if we're thinking on the same lines. And Ultimate Nick wasn't the same as regular Nick until Origins came out and retconned it.

I'm an old-school kinda guy myself though, with my favorite era for Marvel ending right about the time of the original Onslaught storyline. I've read some of the Ultimate stuff and found most of it to be a less than enjoyable read, but then again, I've thought the same of most of the main Marvel universe stuff for the last dozen years or so.

As a long time Nick Fury fan (classic Nick, not that sorry ass wanna-be they made in SLJ's image for Ultimates), I suppose I'll have to bump Inglorious Basterds up on my list of movies to see, sooner rather than later.

TheDemonHunter - 11/24/2009, 5:58 PM
I take your point Demon Hunter, but wouldn't they face the same problem whether the Ultimate brand existed or not? As it is in the regular Marvel Universe we have no less than 5 X Men titles, about 4 Wolverine, 2 Avengers, 3 Hulks etc. New comers to comics are gonna have a hard time regardless. At the end of the day though, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to navigate the titles. This is Ultimate..this isn't. Not really a brain teaser! I don't see how more stories and takes on any character can ever be anything but positive..its when they stop writing..or hiring great writers..that we have to worry. I mean if Frank Miller was worried about somehow "diluting" the DC Batman canon, we wouldn't have possibly the greatest Bat story ever written in The Dark Knight Returns.
RorMachine - 11/24/2009, 6:07 PM
Dark Knight Returns isn't an ongoing monthly collection of titles. It's a one-shot (or two if you count the sequel) graphic novel. Not remotely the same.
TheDemonHunter - 11/24/2009, 6:09 PM
Well, the principal is surely. And Miller has taken his version of Batman into that very thing..the monthly Allstar Batman And Robin, which imo is 10 times the read half the other regular Bat titles are. And Grant Morrison's Allstar Superman is absolutely fantastic. I'll happily confuse a few noobies if I'm getting stories like them thank you:)
RorMachine - 11/24/2009, 6:15 PM
DarthMul-I mean-MarVell: Cool man - I like the new name/avatar! :)

LEE:Im guessing you've never read The Ultimates! As ROR said they're just grittier versions of the original characters set in what I would say is a slightly more realistic world (with superhumans being deployed to the Middle East etc) They havent and never will replace the original characters and if you're saying that The Ultimates are polluting the regular comics then I guess the same goes for the Zombie Marvel Universe as well? Thats an alternate take on the characters set in its own continuity just as The Ultimates are!!!

The fact is, a lot of what Millar introduced in The Ultimates should be used in The Avengers simply because it would make the movie better! In the original books there was very little focus on Cap being out of place in a modern world but The Ultimates handled that really well and I for one would like to see how a man from the 1940's reacts to a guy in a flying metal suit not just have him accept it because we as comic book fans could accept that maybe but the general movie going audience sure as hell wont!

ROR: I've fallen behind on Millar's Ultimate Avengers (I have the first two issues) but what I read was excellent (I miss Bryan Hitch though) In fact I'm heading off over to eBay to buy the ones Im short of - thanks for reminding me, lol! :)
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 6:21 PM
special preview of sherlock holmes playing right now during V
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 6:29 PM
@Ror -- I don't think it's ever a good idea for any company to divide up their resources for fans in the manner that currently exists, especially at the cost of comics these days. We'll have to agree to disagree on whether multiple ongoing continuities is bad or not for fans for now. Time will tell though.

@josh -- In the original Avengers and Cap books, there was quite a bit about Cap being lost in the changes in the world just from the 40s to the 60s. As the character has been around for multiple decades now though, it wouldn't make sense to still have him confused about seeing these things in the mainstream MU being so different from his time in WWII. He's put in more time since coming out of Suspended Animation than he did before it.
TheDemonHunter - 11/24/2009, 6:31 PM
Mark Strong is such a Gorgeous man.
MsKyle08 - 11/24/2009, 6:31 PM
TheDemonHunter: I agree, it would be idiotic for him to still be like that in the current MU but my point was that Millar handled that really well in The Ultimates and I'd like to see that in the movie! LEE sees The Ultimates as the anti-christ of comic books but as I said above there is a lot of good points that could make the future Marvel movies better! :)
JoshW - 11/24/2009, 6:48 PM
@josh -- Hopefully somewhere they have a story bible, setting up the continuity for this Avengers movie universe they're making. I don't mind seeing a mix of old and new ideas, but it has to be cohesive and make sense when tied together or the movies will suffer badly for it. I'm not particularly optimistic on this note, given how disjointed things have been for all of Marvel's titles in the last dozen years or so, but that's another argument for another time :)
TheDemonHunter - 11/24/2009, 7:02 PM
Another important point to remember is the marketability of CBM's and the need to appeal to larger audiences to ensure ongoing popularity and budgets. This said, Ultimates would be more accessible for ppl that are not comic fans simply because it is set in our current world/era and takes little or no explanation...much easier to relate to imo.
scribe - 11/24/2009, 7:20 PM
MsKyle-LOL..That part gets me everytime! And I'm a GUY!!
peterparker420 - 11/24/2009, 7:53 PM
The marketability is all the more reason to make sure it can appeal to fans of both Ultimate MU and mainstream MU. A movie set in a purely Ultimates-based universe probably wouldn't get my dollars, for example, as I haven't enjoyed much of what I've read there. You can use elements of both continuities to make sure it doesn't alienate anyone AND still have a half-decent story if it's planned out properly. It's not as though nobody outside of comics fans has ever heard of Captain America, the Hulk, or Thor (just to name a few).

Take the most recognizable elements of each character and do them properly in a non-specific continuity all its own, in a manner that allows them to come together in an actual cohesive story instead of just seeing how many explosions and big-name actors (ie. eye candy) they can cram into two hours. Without enough thought put into each character's backstory and what fans will think of it, the whole series will fail.

We should be past the simple joy of "hey at least they made a movie with (insert hero name)!" and should be looking at it more from the standpoint of "What can be done to make a movie that is commercially viable and doesn't alienate the fans that got it this far to begin with?"
TheDemonHunter - 11/24/2009, 8:11 PM
Tarantino is the MAN!
hardcorefrokid - 11/24/2009, 9:35 PM
I enjoyed the bastards.
Betty - 11/24/2009, 10:01 PM
The Hoff was the best Fury.
HannibalSmith - 11/24/2009, 11:36 PM
The MAX Fury is the best in my book.

The guy took off his belt and whipped an Air Force general who was getting on his nerves. In the pentagn.

Tha's just awsome.
Frank Garret - 11/24/2009, 11:43 PM
@TheDemonHunter: Great discussion! I thought they did what you were talking about pretty well in Iron Man. What are your thoughts about that? I do, however, think that you have to have both the Ultimates and Mainstream MUs to appease those two separate audiences. You can see the division in this forum as to who likes what. Both titles have strengths and weaknesses. I like old school Fury because he's more rough around the edges, but like smooth design of the Ultimate Fury because he seems more spy-ish. Fury hasn't had enough screen time to get my judgment on SLJ's performance. What about the screwed up DCU?
Upupandaway - 11/25/2009, 1:35 AM
Mark Miller is sick The Ultimates are cool when handled by him, in no way can they replace the originals but the spin he gives them is awesome. Captain America really is really a soldier first and foremost though I dont like ultimate Tony Stark
breakUbatman - 11/25/2009, 3:55 AM
I must say that I don't see what anyone who says that Ultimate Fury and 616 Fury are the same are talking about. Aside from apperance and general mannerisms, there's still notable differences. Fury was always about saving the wrld, Ultimate Fury is mostly interested in building an army of supersoldiers. I mean would mainstream Fury kidnap the black panther, turn him into a super soldier and then refuse him the opportunity to return to his native land? I don't think so.

I understand that people tend to like their comic book characters t be edgy and gritty and what have you, but come on. I

Its the same thing with Captain America. Mainstream Cap was above all things an idealist, he believed in the American dream, justice and liberty for all. Ultimate Cap on the ther hand is an arrogant douche, he's pretty much the punisher, or Batman in a Cap uniform. Ultimate Cap is missing the point, is what I'm saying.

Now I saw Basterds, and overall liked it. Too long, though. I did not need an eight minute scene on [frick]ing strudel.
Frank Garret - 11/25/2009, 3:57 AM
.... huh. Well Frank, that's interesting. That doesn't sound all that great to me.

I'm hearing conflicting reports here lol
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 5:16 AM
i like the regular fury better, but it makes sense to use the sammy jackson one in the movies. but they're so different that they really are two completely different characters.
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 5:39 AM
@ frank

yeah, MAX fury is funny as hell. ...banging down hookers and shit
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 5:40 AM
Actually Frank, 616 Fury could be just as ruthless depending who was writing him. In Elektra: Assasin he's a right bastard. He would always do whatever necessary to win. As for Cap, I feel exactly the opposite. Classic Cap I was never really a big fan of because he came across like a self righteous boy scout a lot of the time. In fact, I only really gained an appreciation for him when Millar began writing him ..and his interpretation was more like The Ultimate version anyway! But, there are pros and cons of both..which is why a mix would be nice for the movie.

Marvell, don't worry, that scene isn't about [frick]ing strudel! It involves strudel. Nobody appreciates tension in movies anymore!
RorMachine - 11/25/2009, 6:46 AM
I haven't seen Basterds yet but the best thing i felt that Tarantino ever did was "present" Iron Monkey, no joke. I'm really not a fan of his. He's got a distinctive style that just doesn't sit well with me.

And i wouldn't want Cap to be this Cyclops douche boyscout but i wouldn't want Cap to be a Punisher knock-off either. I agree that a mix of both worlds would be best for the film!
Shaman - 11/25/2009, 7:24 AM
Tarantino is great with ensemble casting. Maybe he could do a Suicide Squad movie? I know there's no definitive team, but that would be up his alley. I like Fury as a behind the scenes guy, so I like what they're doing with the movies.
Upupandaway - 11/25/2009, 7:55 AM
LMAO... ok Ror man.

Well really though I don't even remember anything from IB about streudal, so I didn't think he meant ACTUAL intercourse with a German pastry XD

oh wait... there was the part where that Nazi maniac that kept bothering her sent his men around to pick her up and fetch her to that restaurant to SIT AND EAT WITH MOTHER[frick]ING GOEBBELS!! She might have been eating struedal then but I was too busy trying to wrap my brain around the idea of this poor little lady whose family was murdered by the gestapo was now stuck at a table with that twisted monster.

DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 7:56 AM
well... If I did a bit of a pepsi challenge, and read up some Ultimate Fury, would that make me a sell out?
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 8:01 AM
yeah that scene was something else Marv.
MsKyle08 - 11/25/2009, 8:22 AM
DarthMulder you changed your name? And I just made this!

Betty - 11/25/2009, 9:07 AM
!!!!!! Betty that rocks!!! LOL OMG.
Well hell.. maybe I should change back now cause that photoshop is SO BOSS! lmao..
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 11:13 AM
If you change your name I wont know who you are anymore. I liked your darthmulder name. MarVell is cool too. Can't think of a interesting photoshop job for that one though.
Betty - 11/25/2009, 11:23 AM
well Betty, yoo da man. That manip is so sweet I will save go ahead and change back.
Mostly because I feel so honored that you even did it. I have a Betty original as my avatar! You can't beat that!!!
DarthMulder - 11/25/2009, 11:32 AM
Ha, how 'bout this one? I like the first one better.

lol, thanks man. It's a fun name. I'd been meaning to do it for a while but kept forgetting oh and then my computer got sick. I did Leee's tick and CapTick America one too. Too bad he uses them for his star-propaganda, damn his eyes! J/K Leee.
Betty - 11/25/2009, 11:33 AM
