DetBullock - 6/10/2011, 3:43 AM
John Cassady from some time draws superheroes only so he can afford to do indie comics, with that stuff he's simply awesome.
MarvelousMarty - 6/10/2011, 3:54 AM
He made him look like Captain Stupid. Terrible.
Jolt17 - 6/10/2011, 4:13 AM
Well Cassaday is one of my fav artist, but that doesn't look that good!

Um without those Astonishing X-Men colorist and inker, his art can be weaker indeed.
NotU - 6/10/2011, 4:14 AM
where's the rest of his arm behind that shield?
he has a bad case of Cartman-mouth too.

". No wonder no-one's buying anymore. "
@weneedrevelelation

Lol ! You've got to be fricking kidding me... you are so wrong, you don't even know.

btw, from the pics you shown as "arts', i suspect you're a Liefield fan, which makes your opinion, invalid.
VictorHugo - 6/10/2011, 4:33 AM
What´s with you folks this morning?

John Cassaday is one of the best artists ever.

MovieTheaterLad - 6/10/2011, 4:57 AM
@weneedarevolution

"They try to have this painting feel and that's never what comics were supposed to look like."

Says who?
BrandonLi - 6/10/2011, 5:29 AM
Dude, that funking bankruptcy was a goddamn decade ago, and what you said was "No wonder no-one's buying *anymore*."

And i thought what i said was, i *suspect* you were a Liefield fan.

Jesus christ, ppl resorting to name-calling nowadays
JahanX - 6/10/2011, 5:49 AM
Huh, a comic book movie site full of users who apparently don't read comic books. Well, not enough to know who John [frick]ing Cassaday is

ThaMessenger07 - 6/10/2011, 6:08 AM
@ MrEko:

It's from Ultimate Captain America Annual. Not really a great twist on Black Panther yet still a nice story. Cap was training T'Chala in that Panel.

@ JahanX: THANK YOU!!! and to continue where you left off...

Though I would say that is pretty Sloppy work for him up there.....Makes me think he may not like the Movie version cause he has always been very passionate about Drawing Captain America.
imnotwearinghockeypants - 6/10/2011, 6:14 AM
Not a big fan of Cassaday. Kind of crappy.
VictorHugo - 6/10/2011, 6:24 AM
>Trust me, 10 - 20 years from now they won't be making >comics anymore. They'll just be doing motion comics, >cartoons, DVDs and movies.

I hope it doesn´t come to that. I love reading comics on the bus and on the train here in Brazil. Even an occasional gameboy playing. But few people dare to use an I-pad on the bus or train, or he´s expecting to be robbed.

Besides, maybe it´s me, i feel my hands itching if i use the Cell-phone too much, or on my pockets, it´s like it´s microwave cooking my legs.

So, i guess i´ll be skipping digital comics altogether if they´ll give me cancer on my hands. :(
BIGBMH - 6/10/2011, 6:25 AM
That cover is very mediocre. I can see that he's done some very good work in the past, but this dose not live up to that. I've seen much better fan art.

MovieTheaterLad - 6/10/2011, 6:34 AM
@weneedarevolition

Actually, my avatar is a character from a video game, so that just shows how much you know.

As for you, you seem to be under the impression that all comics are superhero comics drawn by George Perez and John Byrne.

Like any artistic medium, comics evolved. People realized that any art style should be allowed when trying to create a story, and since then, comics have become so incredibly diverse and varied, that many artists who've risen to super stardom within the field did so because they were able to find a unique style unlike anything else out.

You, however, don't seem to be one of those people. My suggestion? Read the "Flight" anthologies. Then you might learn what comics are about.
NorrinRaddical - 6/10/2011, 6:34 AM
can somebody please tell me where on earth Tim Sale & Jeph Loeb's "Captain America : White" mini-series is!?!?! that thing was supposed to be out years ago!

Cassaday's run on Planetary, though inconsistent in quality, was overall terrific. though not really my style, that book remains one of my favorites. i like a lot of the OTHER covers people have posted here, more than the new one
Jer3miah - 6/10/2011, 6:45 AM
Yeah, that was gay. Never been a fan of Cassaday. All the fanboys posted some good shit, though. Keep 'em comin', guys.
thecheetoman2004 - 6/10/2011, 6:54 AM
You might want to correct the article or the preview description because it says it's for issue #4 when the cover itself says issue #3. Just thought you should know :)
Skeletor - 6/10/2011, 7:01 AM
How has someone not posted this cover yet?
Photobucket
Y'know, the one this is based off of?
THORION76 - 6/10/2011, 7:03 AM
Cassaday is a very good artist. His cap after 911 was F-ING EPIC, he was just tired when he drew this.
THORION76 - 6/10/2011, 7:06 AM
Im an artist and have been drawing superheros for 15 year's and KIRBY still destroy's everybody with power and energy.
Ceejay - 6/10/2011, 7:10 AM
@weneedarevolution

That Jim Lee cover art you posted is the worst type of comic art there is! His biceps are twice the size of his head for crissakes! You can see every sinew and vein around his neck THROUGH HIS COSTUME??? Jesus its art for kids who are still in awe of a pile of muscles. Cross-hashing is a skill, Jim Lee literally abused the privilege!

John Cassady is light years ahead of Jim Lee and his anatomy-challenged art style. These are artists...

Brian Bolland...

John Cassady...

Adam Hughes...

Frank Cho...

Greg Land...

Travest Charest...

J G Jones...

ThaMessenger07 - 6/10/2011, 7:12 AM
@ MrEko: Yeah it was kinda cool but I love the Royalty he brings to the table. Ult BP lacks that.
profamagoole - 6/10/2011, 7:26 AM
It looks a lot more realistic the other artists; probably just to align with the movie.
BIGBMH - 6/10/2011, 7:49 AM
Greg Land better than Jim Lee? Nah. More realistic doesn't mean better.

There are a lot of artist that excelt at more flashy stuff and some people, myself included prefer that to shooting for realism.
comicb00kguy - 6/10/2011, 8:28 AM
I usually like Cassaday's art, but even he can't make that steaming turd of an outfit on "Cap" look good. That pose also looks very awkward. Furthermore, he looks like he has no ears- like a big blue prophylactic.

Ceejay: thanks for posting some great comic art (though I don't like Cap on that Land art- that chin strap is beyond lame!). Really classed up this thread. All you're missing is some Perez and maybe Epting. Good stuff!
TheDorkKnight - 6/10/2011, 9:13 AM
Cap looks like he's having an epic battle with the toilet. Absolutely terrible. Cassaday could've done a better job... probably in a rush or didn't give a shit.
valeriesghost - 6/10/2011, 9:21 AM
I really like Cassidy, but as @Skeletor pointed out, it was based off of an earlier cover, plus he had to make it LOOK like Chris Evens and the movie, and Chris doesn't have a Jim Lee body.

And i LOVE all of the different artistic variations in comics now. Complaining about it is like saying all cinematographers should have the same look. What if every CBM was shot like 300? yeah, its great and works for that movie, but would not for TDK.

I don't think it has anything to do with bankruptcy , i think it has everything to do with letting the artists explore and be themselves. and we all benefit from that.
ThaMessenger07 - 6/10/2011, 10:14 AM
@ comicb00kguy: Not a huge fan of Perez but I support Epting!

Ceejay - 6/10/2011, 12:01 PM
@comicb00kguy - Yeah but I forgot one of my favourites from the last 10 years..

Bryan Hitch...

JackJNapier - 6/10/2011, 12:31 PM
John Cassaday is one of the best artist out there, if you don't like his art its because you don't read comic books and are a poser. His work on Astonisher X-men is regarded as some of the best X-men work out there.
JackJNapier - 6/10/2011, 12:39 PM
@ThaMessenger07

That second image is Steve McNiven not Epting
MovieTheaterLad - 6/10/2011, 1:31 PM
@Ceejay

You are aware that Greg Land traces almost all his work from recycled images ad from porn, right?
Ceejay - 6/10/2011, 2:48 PM
He doesn't trace, he uses pictures as reference just like most decent artists do when they require realistic presentation of anatomy as opposed to the ultra dynamic perspectives and over exaggerated anatomy of traditional superhero comic art.

Boris Vallejo does it, so does Alex Ross, Bryan Hitch, Steve Sampson, Alex Maleev and I used to use pictures of freeze frames form VHS movies when I was drawing Judge Dredd for 2000AD back in the day too. Here's some of my old work...

Ceejay aka Cyril Julien

Unfortunately I worked in black and white ink and the colourist they used to have do my work was lousy! Ahh the good old days. :-)
marvel72 - 6/10/2011, 3:27 PM
@ ceejay

wow man, you're not bullshiting me that really is your artwork.

because its really awesome,i use to read 2000 a.d in my younger day.

a.b.c warriors,rogue trooper,nemesis the warlock.

classic british comic.
comicb00kguy - 6/10/2011, 3:51 PM
Ceejay: Like that Judge Dredd. Quality stuff. Think I have a couple of those- I'll have to check my longboxes this weekend. T

Not as big a fan of Hitch, but that's more because of my well-documented contempt for the ultimates. The art, taken for itself, is fundamentally excellent- I just hate those costumes and the story. I've got a couple of other things he drew somewhere- drawing a blank on what- that I did really enjoy.
TheDorkKnight - 6/10/2011, 6:39 PM
@weneedrevelation Niiiice.. Joe Mad is one of my all time favortites. Good stuff. I don't get why people want realism... it's a gotdamn comic book, man!
Ceejay - 6/10/2011, 10:56 PM
@DEADPOOOL - It's not about having realism it's about having good art. Just because it's a comic doesn't mean the rendering has to be sub standard. Comics are as diverse a medium as film, the better the illustrator is at telling a story the better the visual narrative. Especially when you get to my age, you simply don't want your stories told by artists who can't illustrate beyond a few action poses!

@weneedrevelation - SCHOOL ME? Ha, if you were half my age then you could use those words with meaning! Not only did I work as a comic strip illustrator for ten years and do a graphic novel but I actually ran a comic shop for 7 years too and being British, we collected all kinds of comics and have a much wider appreciation for the business of comic art than this obsession you guys have with spandex and powers!

You may like Finches, Lee's and Maduerias as much as you want but they are LIMITED in their talent to not being able to draw anything unless its challenged by proportions of anatomy. These guys can't do facial expressions beyond grim, grimmer and mouth wide open baring all teeth! In the case of Madueria, he's the worst, he draws caricatures, not even characters! He shouldn't have been allowed back into comics in the first place without finishing Battlechasers which he left abruptly once D.C forced him and the the rest of lazey upstarts at Cliffhanger to be more professional about their comics and stop playing video games and drawing alternate covers to bleed their fans dry!

All that cartoony wanna be manga style art may blow the mind of children, but I'm 44 years old and seen way too many fine draughtsmen in the business who can deliver real expressionism and outstanding visual breakdowns. You're artists are fanboy's favourites at best, pop stars for teenagers who want to see a lot of muscles they don't have and costumes that fit like skin! Every women these guys draw look the same with different colour hair, it's actually hilarious to have you try it with those kind of artists, it only shows how narrow your knowledge is at best and how young you really are.

Never mind, some of us never grow up! :-)

Here's another outstanding artist, Glenn Fabry! He stopped working at 2000AD just before I started and I so wanted to meet the guy. The stories they used to tell of his genius in the offices were legendary!

Glenn Fabry...

comicb00kguy - 6/11/2011, 1:09 AM
Ceejay: Your last post earns many cool points in my book. I'm close to your age and have seen many great artists, and many that were flavor-of-the-month, including all this Image crap that I have prayed for over 20 years people would grow to dislike when they sobered up and realized how bad it was. I don't like to have to read word balloons to identify characters I've been reading for twenty years. The only places I do want realism in a comic book is for people to look like themselves, anatomy to be portrayed in ways God intended the human body to move around, and action to obey basic unbreakable laws of physics.

not familiar with Fabry, but I LIKE those pics you posted. Now THAT is comic art.
Ceejay - 6/11/2011, 2:22 AM
@comicb00kguy - I know, isn't he outstanding? Fabry was notoriously late for deadlines and apparently would stay out drinking all night. But my editor told me a story where he delivered nothing for months and came in on the deadline day with nothing but pencilled sketches half drunk. While they were all panic, this guy just sat down with a pen and finished all the pages (Beautifully) in the office in a few hours! They were gobsmacked, GENIUS!!
TheDorkKnight - 6/11/2011, 11:10 AM
@Ceejay Those pics you posted were [frick]ing awesome. But hey man I appreciate all art work whether it's manga style or realistic because art is art and the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Madureira's work holds special meaning to me because he was doing his run on Uncanny X-Men when I started actually buying X-Men comics (instead of reading all my friends' cbs lol). I understand what you're saying but I have an appreciation for different styles and don't dig just any one in particular. Why not have a broader horizon instead of expecting art to be a certain way.
