Digital Spy report that Green Lantern has gone straight to the top of the Australian box office in its opening weekend. Knocking the critically acclaimed Rise of the Planet of the Apes from the #1 spot, the DC Comics adaptation took in an estimated domestic total of over $3 million.

Will this help its chances of a sequel? Probably not, but if it continues to perform well overseas and on DVD/Blu-ray, that'll certainly convince Warner Bros. to push ahead with a sequel! Do you actually want to see one though? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place. Here are the box office results in full.

marvel72 - 8/15/2011, 4:15 AM
someone in the world had to like it more than rise of the planet of the apes,it just happened to be the aussie's.

It's the opening weekend for it over there. Big films like this always knock each other off during opening weekend. People forget that GL opened #1 it's opening weekend here (the US) too. That doesn't mean it'll have legs at the box office though.

I still hope for a sequel as long as they give us an actual coherent script and a great director. I hope that the miscues in the first movie don't doom a GL franchise for 5-10 years (because that's what it'll take to reboot...see Superman: Returns to Man of Steel)
ScionStorm - 8/15/2011, 4:17 AM
What's Red Dog? Hmmm. Glee Live is only supposed to be in theatres for like two weeks right?
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 4:18 AM
Why are you guys so shocked? Greens part of our national colours
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 4:34 AM
ScionStorm - It's an aussy film about a dog in the outback

teabag - Don't be surprise if it doesn't. Glee was a pretty amazing movie.
er101 - 8/15/2011, 4:39 AM
Now that's a surprise
dcbat - 8/15/2011, 4:45 AM
im a Aussie and will be seeing both asap. i just gotta see gl and see if its as bad as everyone says it is. Cant not see a cbm.
batmitedimension - 8/15/2011, 4:53 AM
I have no idea why everyone is hating Green Lantern. When I read all the negative reviews I was really disappointed and it put out the excitement I had for the movie. When the movie first arrived here however, I went to see it, and damn it, it was a GOOD movie! It wasn't bad at all! I mean yeah, many of us fanboys would have wanted some stuff differently but that doesn't mean its not a good movie.

I am definitely excited for a sequel and want the whole trilogy they were discussing in the earlier stages of the film to happen!
Fantine - 8/15/2011, 4:53 AM
Green Lantern was ok....
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 5:00 AM
teabag - If it makes you feel any better, I didn't pay for the tickets. When I went and saw it I was surprised. I found myself singing along to almost all of the songs. Hate to say it but Glee is one of the best movies I've seen in my life.

dcbat - I know how you feel. I walked pat the X-Men movie and I don't know how I did it. We should go grab a drink sometime, except I'm too young, way too young.
marvel72 - 8/15/2011, 5:09 AM
i will 100% guarantee you i will never...ever watch glee live,if you put that crap into a blu-ray it will damage your player.
DukeAcureds - 8/15/2011, 5:10 AM
I'm hoping it goes on to gross more than any film in Oz ever! That way we might get a sequel. GL deserves another chance. Maybe if it continues to score at the Aussie box-office, they'll release a director's cut into theatres, instead of just on DVD and it'll suddenly turn into a big success.
Pipe dream, I know. But I don't want this movie's failure to halt a GL2, Flash or Justice League movie.
Wait, Glee was a movie?
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 5:10 AM
teabag - Take any woman along and see the movie. No girls can resist Sam's prefect smile and gorgeous lips, oh and his eyes, those eyes, those blue betty eyes that just stare in your heart.

man, that movies got to me. Green Lantern will probably sit on 3,050,000 at the most.
gandalf550 - 8/15/2011, 5:11 AM
Hopefully we do get a sequel out of it.
JackDexx - 8/15/2011, 5:11 AM
this is why we are not going there for the olympics.
if they want to get it they need to stop being stupid.
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 5:14 AM
Marvel 72 - Give it a try.

DukeAcureds - Yes Glee is a movie, one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.

gandalf550 - Are you talking about Glee?
HoneyBadgerDontCare - 8/15/2011, 5:21 AM
@batmitedimension

I agree, I thought GL was pretty good. It had it's flaws, like any movie, but I really didn't think it was anywhere near as bad as people made it out to be.

I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to a sequel.
KALel3412 - 8/15/2011, 5:24 AM
Awsome. GL was nowhere near as bad as they say
KALel3412 - 8/15/2011, 5:24 AM

Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 5:26 AM
Nephillim, have you seen it?
Jefferys - 8/15/2011, 5:29 AM
Oh Tea. I'll never get you.
JoshWilding - 8/15/2011, 5:45 AM
I doubt Glee 3D will reach the #1 spot ANYWHERE after debuting at the #11 spot in the US, lol. :P
Ric - 8/15/2011, 6:02 AM
[frick] the script from the first movie! bring an awesome script for part 2 and rescue the franchise!!!
HannibalKing - 8/15/2011, 6:03 AM
i just didn't like how the narative at the start meant hal jordan was playing "catch-up" storywise against the audience for a majority of the movie.
it made things a little boring whilst we waited for hal to get his stuff together.
billnye69 - 8/15/2011, 6:15 AM
Green Lantern was good, people just got their minds poisoned by the critics because nobody goes to see a movie these unless the critics approve it.....people are stupid.
Maximillion - 8/15/2011, 6:29 AM
Green Lantern was not that bad of a movie, although it had a lot of flaws, they should make part2 and strive to make it better. First thing they should do is stop trying to fit it into the usual Hollywood mold, do what George Lucas did with Star Wars and innovate. It would be good to see more action and dialog with Sinestro, they nailed the look of that character.
Shaman - 8/15/2011, 6:29 AM
There's gotta be something in the water over there.
Solomon - 8/15/2011, 6:35 AM
Green Lantern was way better then the critics made it! It was far from perfect, but it was a very entertaining movie...I talked with a lot of people and most of them enjoyed the movie!
Shaman - 8/15/2011, 6:47 AM
As "okay" as a lot of people are making GL out to be, just so they can get a sequel, saying it's better than Rise of the Planet of the Apes is pushing it. And since no one is saying that, how the [frick] does it beat it in theaters??? What is Australia "Bizarro world" or something?
rorschach1326 - 8/15/2011, 6:54 AM
Just saying Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released a week before Green lantern in Australia. So that could explain the drop?
gasmasquerade - 8/15/2011, 6:58 AM
GL was a fun movie, despite it's story and editing issues. It certainly wasn't horrible as many have claimed. I would say it belongs somewhere just above Fantastic Four on your dvd shelf, but below Captain America.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 8/15/2011, 6:59 AM
I'm hoping GL makes enough money to warrant a sequel. It was not a bad movie, just not a great one.
gasmasquerade - 8/15/2011, 7:00 AM
By the way, none of the avatar images I upload are visible to me. I wonder if I even have an avatar?
Marikina - 8/15/2011, 7:04 AM
*yawns* Thor, Cap, and X-men made more in their opening weekends in Australia. Plus it's just sad that it barely managed to beat out "Rise" despite the 3d boost.
thunderforce - 8/15/2011, 7:06 AM
I think that if they make another one they will do a better job so I want another one , and a justice league too .
Keeks - 8/15/2011, 7:19 AM
Just got back from seeing Green Lantern here in Australia. Glad everyone lowered my expectations. I went in not expecting much, and because of that came out quite happy.

It's sitting at 26% on rotten tomatoes, but in truth I believe it deserves closer to 60-70%.

By no means great, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
SuperSoldier004 - 8/15/2011, 7:22 AM
How did Aus only just get GL now??? We got it here in New Zealand less than a week after the U.S
