In another couple of set videos, we see a scene being put together which will eventually feature Iron Man being thrown into a truck, not to mention some reliable sources further debunking the Skrulls...

IGN Movies have posted a story sharing their thoughts on the involvement of the long rumored alien race, the Skrulls, in The Avengers. While they speculate that the Chitauri are the most likely candidates, I found the first part of their report most interesting. With filming close to coming to an end, the only thing we so far know about the mysterious alien invaders is that they're going to be entirely CGI (several actors wielding strange weaponry on the Cleveland set proved this) and aligned with Loki.

Sources tell IGN that the Skrulls are not in the film.

Smart money is on Loki's allies being the Chitauri, the Ultimate Universe's version of the Skrulls (or one version, anyway). This isn't a new theory. Less cheesy than the scaly-faced green guys from mainstream Marvel, the Chitauri are nonetheless an advanced inter-dimensional race of shape-shifters who also happen to be pretty scary. They even first showed up fighting Cap during World War II as the secret power foundation behind the Nazis! And they are known by many names across the galaxy, including "Skrull."

If this is the direction Marvel's going with these characters, it would track with their other films' tendency to straddle both mainstream Marvel and the Ultimate universe, cherry-picking the best aspects of each. Plus, it probably helps them avoid any sticky legal issues they might have with Fox, since the classic Skrulls are kind of the domain of the Fantastic Four (who, of course, remain safely ensconced in Tom Rothman's version of the Baxter Building).

Meanwhile, we have a couple of new set videos from the last few hours of filming in Cleveland yesterday. The first contains what will eventually be Iron Man being thrown into a truck, while the other features yet another series of explosions.

So, is it or is it not the Skrulls?! At this rate, we're going to have to wait until next year to find out! Be sure to share your thoughts on that and the above set footage in the usual place.

I'm still hoping for Kree. It better not be the bloody Chitauri.
Curmudgeon - 8/30/2011, 4:34 PM
Until we finally get an official look at these aliens, I'm just going to imagine they're Korbinites. :p
SageMode - 8/30/2011, 4:35 PM
The Chitari......
If this is the direction Marvel's going with these characters, it would track with their other films' tendency to straddle both mainstream Marvel and the Ultimate universe, cherry-picking the best aspects of each.

Chitari is NOT one of the best aspects of the Ultimate universe. And yet another damn reason why I wish the Ultimate universe NEVER existed. UGH!!!!!!!!!!
Coloso - 8/30/2011, 4:37 PM
Booo!!! Skrull's or bust. If Fux really has the rights to the Skrull's Disney/Marvel should have gone another route. When they eventually get the rights back their gonna have to ret-con the Chitauri. They should have 616 not Ultimates!

I really don't care what alien race they fight, I'm just excited to see them all on the big screen together!! Can't wait for The Avengers!!!!
MarkV - 8/30/2011, 4:45 PM
Supposedly Fox Studios owns the rights to Supe Skrull, because they still have the film rights to Fantastic Four.
eyesore - 8/30/2011, 4:45 PM
There was a quote awhile back that talked about "Galactic Gangsters" I think is how it was said, is it possible we could see many different alien races.
MarkV - 8/30/2011, 4:45 PM
Thats 'Super' skrull
golden123 - 8/30/2011, 4:46 PM
Why does it matter if it's the Skrulls or the Chitari if they are both shape shifting aliens?
dirtygymsocks - 8/30/2011, 4:46 PM
I think they are Skrulls but they are never called that by name in the movie. They may even call them shitauri but they will resemble the Skrulls most.

ATLANTIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CaptainOtter - 8/30/2011, 4:48 PM
I mean, the Chitauri didnt really do much in the Ultimates directly. They fought from their ships, and we only ever saw one of them in physical form for the most part. And since he was in human form 90% of the time, they can look like whatever Marvel wants them look like.

What I'm getting from this is that they basically took the Skrulls and gave them less of a comic booky look. Which I'm fine with.
CrimboStrange - 8/30/2011, 4:51 PM
Also, it could work since Black Widow and Hawkeye are in this set of Avengers and Black Widow and Hawkeye hunted these guys down in the Triskellion.

I am stoked that Marvel is fusing the Main universe and Ultimate universe!! DFASKKLSA YES!
SHHH - 8/30/2011, 4:51 PM
I Knew It.... Ultimate route = The Chitauri....:)
eyesore - 8/30/2011, 4:54 PM
Looks like we are thinking the same thing TEABAG. I guess great minds really do think alike.
Fonzieismypal - 8/30/2011, 4:55 PM
God help the MCU if it's the Chitauri. I really hope it's just Loki's frost giant buds.
kingmonkeyman - 8/30/2011, 4:58 PM
I'm very disappointed(if this is true) with Marvels choice to use the Chitauri. I'd much rather see an invasion from the Poppups or even Mork from Ork, than the lame Chitauri. This movie is starting to sound like a live action version of Ultimate Avengers movie.
eyesore - 8/30/2011, 5:01 PM
What if its the Trebles, we know they're nuthin but trouble.
TayDee - 8/30/2011, 5:01 PM
either way they are [frick]ing aliens that will do the same stuff
LucasMend - 8/30/2011, 5:01 PM
damn it I don´t think that they should use the Chitari, was never really a fan of it, [frick] the Ultimate Universe. lol
marvel72 - 8/30/2011, 5:02 PM
until marvel make the annoucement it could be anyone,i thought fox only had the rights to the super skrull not the skrulls.
JordanKing - 8/30/2011, 5:03 PM
tbh, i'm way past caring now. Just bring on the bloody film already...
SHHH - 8/30/2011, 5:03 PM
No More Skrull Talk Please.... or Kree...

The Chitauri is still an awesome choice and if you guys think about it, Marvel will make it work because they havent let us down on their movies yet.
MarkV - 8/30/2011, 5:03 PM
The average joe sixpack doesn't give two shits if it's scrulls or chitari. Not sure why people are complaining when it's practically the same thing.
TayDee - 8/30/2011, 5:04 PM
what is the big deal? they're all aliens
capreborn - 8/30/2011, 5:04 PM
Fox doesn't own the Skrulls
Coloso - 8/30/2011, 5:04 PM
It's not fux's fault! Quit crying! Stupid fanboy!...Well I can complain if I want to, cry if I want to, you would cry to if it happened to your cbm too (little Lesley Gore for you youngins) :P

""""If""""" this is true this could be the first stumble for Avengers. I won't be able to shake the bad taste in my mouth as I watch the SHITauri (nod to tea) when it should be the Skrull's. Of course this could be just a rumor (please baby Jesus!) in which case I will come back from beast mode and be happy again.
CorndogBurglar - 8/30/2011, 5:05 PM
it could still be okay.

FF is very close to reverting to Marvel.

By using the Chitauri, they could say it just like they did in the comics. They don't know what their true form looks like.

Then when Marvel gets the Skrull rights back, they can have them appear in the classic Skrull form.

Remember, in the Ultimates, the only time we saw a Chitauri in its own form, it was all dissected and stuck between two forms. So we still never knew what they looked like.
soberchimera - 8/30/2011, 5:07 PM
The Chitauri ARE the Skrulls. If they're the Ultimate version and one of the names for them is skrull. Then they're the frickin skrulls.
