Talking to Home Media Magazine to promote the release of X-Men: First Class on DVD and Blu-ray, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has revealed her interest in seeing classic characters such as Cyclops and Jean Grey in the sequel. Whether we'll actually see this come to pass is unclear, especially as director Matthew Vaughn said he only plans to introduce just one new mutant in the next movie.

Donner, who also produced the first three "X-Men" films, when asked if beloved "X-Men" characters such as Cyclops and Jean Grey would appear in the next "First Class" film, would only say, "Maybe. Let's just say, I hope so."

And in a separate interview with I Am Rogue, the producer discussed the cameos from Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romjin in X-Men: First Class, as well as whether or not there's any doubt about bring Ryan Reynolds back as Deadpool after the critical and commercial disappointment of Green Lantern. Be sure to click on the link below to head on over to the site where you can read much, much more.

To begin with, X-Men: First Class was intended to reboot the X-Men film franchise but at the same time it is obviously a prequel to the original film. Can you talk about the choice to bring back Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn in cameo appearances and how that helps tie this film together with its predecessors?

We always want to let the fans know that we are aware of the timeline, we are aware of the characters and we do try to adhere to the comic. When we can’t, we just try to then throw a little something in so they’ll know (we care). I will say that the idea of having Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn (return) was the idea of Tom Rothman (co-chairman and Chief Executive of Fox Filmed Entertainment ). With both of them … we’ve all remained friends so that was easy to get them. They were very generous to us with their time and allowing us to film them. It was a good idea and Hugh had the best scene. Rebecca had fun too, she had a lot of fun.

Is January Jones' Emma Frost somehow the same character we saw in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

No, she’s Emma from First Class. That’s who she was and she’s the real Emma Frost. I think January did a pretty good job of portraying her.

Has Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, or Bryan Singer discussed any story ideas with you for the sequel?

Yes. I mean that movie was a very strenuous movie so Matthew and everybody took some time off. Now we’re back and regrouping and kicking around some ideas. I think we just need to come up with a really good story and see where that leads us. If we could, great, if not, I think the story itself is what is most important.

How’s pre-production going on The Wolverine?

It’s going well. We’re prepping it, we’re figuring out where we’re going to shoot it and we’re working on it. It’s good.

Well many fans have questioned his [Ryan Reynolds] ability to play the lead in a big super hero movie after the mixed reaction he received for Green Lantern. As a producer, does that films underperformance concern you at all?

No, it doesn’t bother me.

She also says that both herself and the studio are keen to bring Vaughn back. What do you guys think? Do you still want to see Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool after Green Lantern? And how about Cyclops and Jean Grey turning up in the sequel to X-Men: First Class? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Hopes???

Better be!

Also: ICE MAN, ANGEL and of course BEAST.

Hey FOX ignored and messed up even their own continuity so much its easy to bring back THE ORIGINAL 5, the way it should be! :)

Why would a superhero movie from a competing studio flopping bother her?

"In fact, everyone here at Fox did a little dance when we realized how many more millions First Class would bring in from moviegoers avoiding Green Lantern like it had leprosy."

Bringing back the original 5 would *completely* confuse the non-comic-book (mainstream movie) fans, so is too risky a move.

I want to see a Magneto flick starring Fassbender, rather than a rehash of First Class.

Or even better, have some mutant re-age him in X4, so that Fassbender can play him ;-)

personally i don't think we're see anyone new, they'll just use the same ole characters from first class the only difference they'll be led by magneto.

i dont care about the timeline any more... i've stopped trying to think about it, I loved first class, liked X1 and 2, despised X3 and my opinion on Origins was a big fat 'meh'. I'm just paying attention to the films I like in the series and pretending the bad ones didnt happen.

I cant wait till Cyclops meets Havoc

Considering Cyclops can't control his optic blasts because he hit his head when his father threw him out of an airplane that was being attacked by aliens, and the other Summers brother grew up as a slave on an alien planet, the movies have a long way to go before they're anywhere near as confusing as the comics. And then there's Madelyne Pryor and Cable and Rachael Grey and oh god I'm getting dizzy.

if FC is a prequel, and McAvoy and Fassbender will continue playing X and Magneto, in the FC sequel, then we definitely WON'T have Jean, since if you remember that opening scene in The Last Stand, a not so young Stewart's X and McKellen's Erik paid a very young Jean a visit to her home, to ask her sign up for the mutant school. so, it'll most likely be like the whole two different Emmas from Wolverine and FC...a whole lotta confusion.

January Jones was my least favorite part of the flick.

girl had a the acting ability of a cardboard cut out.

i think they should have gone W/their First Choice.

Like I have said plenty of times here....they threw in the cameos to appease the fans and make it seem like a prequel, though by their own admission it really wasn't. I still don't see how they adhered to the comic other than taking characters from the comics. Beyond that it had nothing to do with the comics.

So is the sequel like 20 years later? Doesn't make sense to me if it's in the continuity.

I get the Wolverine and Mystique cameo in First Class given their ability to defy age, but they already kind of screwed with the begining X3 with Xavier's parlysis. If Jean and Scott are in a sequel it screws with the end Wolverine too.

So is it officiall then that there will definetly be a sequel? Great!! X men FC was the best cbm of this year, and this is coming from a guy who isent such a big fan of the X men, but a great movie is a great movie.

Cyclops and Jean would be cool, but with the way these movies are set up I guess we'll never get one set in modern times, or else Prof. X and Magneto would have to be like 70 or 80.

Yes, the mess-up makes a lot of sense now.

No doubt when we see Cyclops and Jean the movie will be set in 1968 and they will be teenagers. A few more mess-ups can't make it any worse than it already is.

Yay Jean & Cyclops!

Lily Collins for Jean!

I actually liked January, but I hope they do replace her with Alice Eve, Alice is a talented actress and looks a lot more like Emma, she wasn't a big role in the movie so it wouldn't be too hard to replace her.

CherryBomb - 9/8/2011, 11:14 AM
Although, Mike Mayhew the artist for X-Men Origins: Jean Grey did use actress Ashley Benson as a model for Jean, so she'd be a good choice too!

but I would prefer Lily Collins.

The X-men comics might confuse people but they have story arcs that let the reader fallow along but when they do thing like that in a movie with no explanation then that will confuse people, fan boy and general audience alike. And when has fox ever tried to adhere to the comics?

So I was watching XMen Origins last night on FX... did they ever finish the SFX for that Movie? kinda looked like ass!

Why was emme frost in this and XMEN first class... 2 defferent decades, if its a new contanuity why was hugh jackman in first class... Sigh =( why can't they just make up their minds.

Any way... Shouldn't they have been in First Class to begin with? Seems like a no brainer, but we are talking about FOX =(

Hey Lee, long time.

Green Lantern wasn't Ryan Reynolds' fault. It had a horrible script and a director that couldn't make sense of it all.

Ryguy88 - 9/8/2011, 12:25 PM
Marvel72, and they should've used a storyline right from the comics too. Also, they should've done panelling like Ang Lee so it looks more like a comic book...no, they should have made it a cartoon....no, it should've just been drawn up on paper like a REAL comic book, yeah, they should have just reprinted some of their older comics from the 60's...is that what you really want?
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 9/8/2011, 1:06 PM

@thatiscrazy Well they could just explain Emma Frost's clone (one of the Cuckoo's) was in X-Men: Origins, but I don't get why they just don't say that!

and Wolverine has been alive for like, ages! so it does make sense he'd be around in First Class. but yeah a lot of the other continuity mistakes are messed up, I'm thinking it's a quasi-reboot/prequel

who cares, those characters shoulda been in first class to begin with, so now scott is the younger brother to havok and is emma gonna play pedo bear and seduce scott? IT'S ALL WRONG!! All of it!!

they're going backwards with everything....

Heres an idea...since Fox has their own X-men films series timeline going. Why doesnt Marvel start their own X-men film series, but the original X-men. Im they aready sre doin that kind of stuff in the comics..I mean with different timelines going on.
dancingmonkey08
dancingmonkey08 - 9/9/2011, 6:52 PM
I hope they continue on with First Class and make another 5 movies set right up until the end of the 20th century. Anyone still demanding a X4 in present day are deluded idiots. Do you really want to see a series continue on from the crap that was X3?

@SuperKalEl

you dont know how Fox owning the rights to all X-men movies works, do you?

Someday it would be wonderful to see Marvel reboot the X-Men with the original five in their MCU but that wont be for decades yet. Marvel will probably have made all of their other characters into movie trilogies first before we get a MCU X-Men reboot.

And for all people complaining about First Class not tying in with Wolverine and X3, its [frick]ing simple, IT DOESNT AND WAS NEVER MEANT TO. Bryan Singer had nothing to do with these movies so he did not include them as canon

PLUS they were terrible so why would you want them to be in canon anymore. Treat X3 and Wolverine like Superman 3 & 4 and First Class as (a much better) Superman Returns. First Class is official canon with X1 & X2, X3 & Wolverine are gone

Ok, so if they are taken out of canon, there is a downside because it is damn disappointing we dont get a fitting conclusion to the onscreen Pheonix plot and we dont get to see a fitting origin to Wolverine but its the only way First Class will tie in with the other movies (oh and before anyone says it, Hank McCoy was using an image inducer in his cameo in X2)

@ Dancingmonkey08 yes Wolverine origins and last stand sucked balls but since first class wasn't a complete reboot of Fox's X-Men universe they are all still part of the same universe no matter what Singer says. It would be like saying Ironman 2 wasn't in the MCU just because it wasn't as good as IM 1, Thor, or Capt. America. Now as far as Beast using an image inducer in X-Men 2 when did they explain that to the general audience yes you can say well that was put in there as an easter egg for comic fan boys and we were expected just to put 1+ 1 together. Well can I do the same thing with first class and just change the characters to who they should have been to make every thing fit together and not make my head hurt. Fox does not care about the characters, continuity or the fans as long as people continue to pay for their movies
