Tom Hardy Discusses Gaining Muscle To Play Bane And How He Nearly Missed Out On TDKR!

In a revealing interview, the actor reflects on his past addictions ("I can’t have beer, but I can have a fight with Batman.") as well as talking in detail about how he just managed to nab the role and being heavier than ever...

While doing the press rounds for Warrior, talk has once again inevitably turned to his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. The actor revealed that while he put on over 18 kg for Bronson back in 2009, he's shot right up to 87 kg for this latest role - the most he's ever weighed! "I feel heavy. This size is not real. I only feel strong in short stints of times. If I needed to get across the room and throw someone through a door, I could do that, but...as soon as I’m done shooting, I’m dropping the weight."

Hardy then went on to elaborate on how exactly he landed the role. Filming rom-com, This Means War, he was just about to head on over to Australia to film new Mad Max movie, Fury Road, only for the torrential floods down under to cause the cancellation of the shoot. It was then that he received a call from the man he worked with on Inception, Christopher Nolan. "Chris rings and says, 'I’m not sure if it’s your sort of thing because it would mean wearing a mask. How do you feel about wearing a mask as an actor?' How do I feel about wearing a mask? I’d wear a plastic bag over my head for Chris! I’ll do anything for him. I did not see that coming. I never, ever thought I’d be in Batman."

And in a surprising turn of events, the British actor then confessed to his trouble past, and how strange it is to look back on that time of his life now that his Hollywood career is taking off to such an extent. "I’m 10 years into being aware of my addictions and in those 10 years, my life has gotten fortuitously better and better. I can’t use, I can’t drink. So that means I can’t go out and dance and be comfortable doing it because I feel stupid and embarrassed. And I’m embarrassed doing karaoke because I haven’t had a beer. You win a few, you lose a few. I can’t have beer, but I can have a fight with Batman. At the end of the day, who’s complaining?"

it's pretty achievable with a good hollywood-sponsored diet, seeing he's white

he's not that huge though

he's at 87kg but his bf is at least 15%

he should get larger than that

Hardy used to be a crackhead for reals. So it is good that he is sober. As for the Backne, most people who use this site probably have Backne?! I know I got a little going on haha..

Well Hemsworth is 6'3'' and weighed about 210 to 220 for Thor and extremely low body fat, so you can tell for yourself if that kid is mostly fat or muscle.

Exactly. Probably less than 5% body fat and pure muscle. That's 6'3'', 220 ish pounds of high maintenance workout and diet. So 6'3'', 235 pounds and most of the day spent on this website is less likely Thor and more likely Jabba, wouldn't you say?

i workout 3 times a week an hour each time,eat lots of chicken,brown rice,veg,i have alot of low fat alternatives as meals because gets a bit boring having chicken every day & expensive.

i have/take a creatine powder drink & creatine plus capsules.

unlike mr.hemsworth who had a personal trainer ate six chicken breats,broc & brown rice plus fitness shakes a day,i think i'm doing alright.

All, keep in mind that these actors don't have a year or more to slowly bulk up like most people with a fitness/weight training lifestyle. They usually have a few months at best so they do some crazy diet/bulk up routine not meant to be sustained for long periods of time.

The guy is real classy. I like his admiration for Nolan. It shows Hardy is a down-to-earth type of person.

I just hope he looks bigger on film... he looks like sh*t to me... honestly.. I dont like the outfit, he looks short and hes not really that stocky in these leak photos.. Im like 90% sure Nolan will prove me wrong once I see this film, but regardless I seriously thing he screwed up the looks of Bane & Catwoman without a cowl...

i think the other nolan batmans are good films,but this one i don't like the look of bane or catwoman & i really haven't seen anything that makes me excited,maybe it'll change when i see the trailer.

this is the 7th batman film i can't really get excited for a character that i've seen so many times before,unlike the avengers & a new take on spider-man which both have got me pumped.

6'3" 235 at what body fat? That matters a lot.

Steven Jackson of St. Louis Rams is about that height and weight. He's also 4% body fat. Even if you are only 8%, that makes a huge difference.

I'd say Hardy is somewhere around 10. That's still pretty low. Low enough to "look" big at least.

Marvel 72, assuming you don't have a freakishly low body fat, at 6'3" 235, your muscle mass to body size/density is proportionately similar to Hardy at 5'10-5'11". If he were your height, he'd be similar to your weight.

im not a gym rat but im hyperactive due to basketball for school being that im 6'4 270lbs im like mini lebron plus the beard frm what the ppl in my building say

that pic of his back does not mean he's on STEROIDS no see some time and some people can get back acne from sweating see if he was working as hard as he should be his back can look like that so do just think its juice ok and the thing I know what people want him to look like is more cute you want him to be leaner see all that is just bulk not lean muscle like you want you want to see Tom all lean and cut right I know thats how you all would like it well to bad sorry listen he might pull it off until I see him in action not Me or Anyone can say any thing ok so how about you all lay off and put you trust in Nolan like I have in the las two Batman movies

I've been lifting for over 16 years now. You can achieve that size, in that time frame, NATRUALLY. IF you know what youre doing, or being trained by someone who does, and simply put in the work and diet the right way. ALTHOUGH bad outbreaks of acne on the back can be an indicator of steriod abuse. Since I dont know him personally I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

87 kilos for a 1.78 meter guy, it is quite a lot. It will look very "big". 192 lb, 5'10.
