Simon Kinberg Says No FANTASTIC FOUR Comic-Con Plans Or Any Specific Comic Inspirations

Commenting once again on a potential Fantastic Four/X-Men movie, Fox's Marvel producer/writer talks in-depth about Josh Trank's reboot, not adapting specific comic book storyline, and more.

"No, I can definitively officially tell you that there will not be anything from Fantastic Four at this year’s Comic Con," writer/producer Simon Kinberg confirmed to Latino Review in a recent lengthy interview. "We are still very much in the middle of shooting and we don’t want to show anything until it’s ready and it’s not ready yet. We want the first stuff that we show from the film to really blow people away, and it will but we have got to wait until it’s ready. We are hopefully going to be refining the way the people see the Fantastic Four movies. There are so many things we are doing different from the previous film and so many things different from other comic books films. When we really step forward we want it to be with our best foot forward. Instead of rushing something together for the Con we’d rather really wait until we have that perfect first image, perfect first sequence and first scene to show people. And I know that there’s a lot of people that think that’s the big surprise from Fox this year at the Con and knowing that I’m talking to a reporter and I’m going on record that I’m saying unfortunately that will not be a surprise for the fans of Comic-Con this year. Obviously the Comic-Con world is incredible important to Fantastic Four and because of that we want to give them the best version of what we are making." It was then suggested that The Fantastic Four could instead be showcased at New York Comic-Con or WonderCon, to which Simon Kinberg agreed is possible.

After commenting on the challenges of making a Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover movie, Simon Kinberg then commented on Kate Mara's (Sue Storm) comments that the reboot is not based on a specific comic unlike X-Men: Days of Future Past. "I actually think that this Fantastic Four movie is sort of a celebration of all the Fantastic Four comics that have preceded it," said Kinberg. "We have elements from the original Fantastic Four that there’s a sort of optimism and inspirational quality to the film. In some ways a comedy that was really distinct in the original Fantastic Four. Also, the notion of this dysfunctional surrogate family that comes together and has to work together is very present in the movie that owes a great debt to the originals. And this idea that they are scientist and that it’s almost like this science adventure, more than being superheroes, they are almost like scientific adventurers, that’s a big part of the movie too. We also owe a lot to the Ultimate’s and the current crop of Fantastic Four comics and you’ll see that. I don’t want to give anything away but you will see it in the details and a lot of the story telling. It’s really sort of inspired by all the different history of the Fantastic Four comics. I think what Kate meant, and I read that comment, I think what she meant which was right is that it’s not based on any one run. Days of Future Past was obviously based on Days of Future Past comic run and that was something that I could easily give the actors to read and they’d know the whole story. In this case because we are really snatching details, story lines, moments, action sequences from across the whole gambit of the decades of Fantastic Four, there isn’t one comic that defines the movie." The producer went on to discuss how much freedom Fox has on Fantastic Four in terms of character rights, honoring the comics, and whether the film will be found-footage, all of which you can read over at Latino Review. What do you think?

Directed by Josh Trank, The Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm), Toby Kebbell (Victor von Doom), Reg E. Cathey (Dr Franklin Storm), and Tim Blake Nelson (Harvey Elder), and hits June 19, 2015.

m0th3r - 7/22/2014, 9:13 PM its less then a year from release and they are not doing

I'm wondering about the conspiracy theory that they are not even making the movie, its a rights hold..
m0th3r - 7/22/2014, 9:13 PM
O, First.
Mercwitham0uth - 7/22/2014, 9:13 PM

I can respect that, really wanted to see at least a poster. But I'm waiting patiently man. lol
SonofBatman - 7/22/2014, 9:19 PM
Just give the rights back to Marvel damn.
TokenNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:19 PM
No banners to be revealed or official stills?
Not even a Q&A?
The Avengers 2 hadn't started filming yet, Batman V Superman hadn't started filming either, and they still had something to show and SDCC.
Fox you are failing!
*insert picture Red Skull saying "you're failing" here*
Shroombeast - 7/22/2014, 9:20 PM
@Mercwitham0uth That's because they're not trying to make it good. They're just making it to keep the film rights and hoping to make a quick buck in the process.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:20 PM
We will have plenty of Marvel Studios films to occupy Comic Con 2014. Fox usually don't have their Shit together so F4 not being ready for a peak or artwork being shown is no surprise.
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:22 PM
i can respect what they are saying but its still strange to me but oh well,i think FF would have benefited from being at Comic Con and creating some buzz atleast..anyway as i have said,i have never been a big FF fan but i cant say that i am not the least bit curious about it because i am , i am curious as to how this turns out, hopefully its good
TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:22 PM
Simon Kinberg is afraid if being booed off stage. Lol. The crowd knows the deal and they would chant "Give the rights back to Marvel".
TokenNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:23 PM
@m0th3r Imagine the uproar from fans if that was to happen, they did it once in the 90's why not do it again now?

Showed GotG footage, what was it, 2 weeks after shooting started? Hope this doesn't become a Trank indulge-fest...

KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:30 PM
Jamesman-yes, exactly..its all a ruse ..;)

well nothing from Sony and now Fox(maybe we will have some X MEN stuff) so i guess its up to WB and Marvel to deliver
TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:30 PM
Isn't mole man the villain. That's one terrible villain.

TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:31 PM
Lmao @jamesman Gambit is a charming man. ;)
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:31 PM
i am so curious about this film,i hope its good,i am really interested in how Toby Kebell does as Doctor Doom
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:31 PM
Remy-no, the actor said its his beginnings so that means Doom is the villain
MisterHolmes - 7/22/2014, 9:32 PM
DrDoom - 7/22/2014, 9:33 PM
Aside from the Ultimates influence, Kinberg is actually saying a lot of good stuff here. Will the movie still be garbage?

KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:34 PM
batz-well Marvel likes to get their some of their VFX done before and even during production i have ehard which is why they were able to show the guardians footage
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:35 PM
Jamesman-i think they did, their press release mentioned Pixels and Goosebump only, they could still surprise us but i kinda doubt that
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:36 PM
the three superhero films for next year-Avengers:AOU( EXCITED), Ant Man ( CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC) and FF ( CURIOUS)
MisterHolmes - 7/22/2014, 9:36 PM
im hoping for a revealing Con this year
TheRationalNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:37 PM

And even this quote won't put the "they're not basing any of the material from the comics" rant to rest...please...however for those who say "They're already not following the comics with a young Reed, Ben and Sue, a black human torch and them not being called "The Fantastic Four (For now, it's only the first film. Even Stark didn't notify himself as Iron Man until right before the credits rolled) I can understand and respect your argument. lol

-For Now! jk
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:39 PM
funny enough, the director of Ant Man, Peyton Reed was gonna do a FF film back in 2002 but he walked away because Fox wanted to do something more akin to the two FF films we got and Reed wanted to do his sounded pretty is a review of the script...
TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:39 PM
@Ezio were getting mole man. Deal with it. :p Joking. I do say the young dude who is playing Victor Von Doom doesn't even look like a guy who can carry the weight of such a villain. Fox produces made up fake characters. Not this glorious villain.

ALegendaryPanda - 7/22/2014, 9:41 PM
It's okay guys, the rights still aren't going to back to Marvel.

KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:42 PM
Remy-then u havent seen Dawn of the Planet cause Toby Kebell plays oba who is the main ape villain and he gives one hell of a performance
TheRationalNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:42 PM
Man, Kinberg stays busy. I wonder what the 2009 script for the reboot was like in it's earliest stages?
Ignition - 7/22/2014, 9:44 PM
Don't be one of the degenerates that thinks Fox is faking a movie production. Don't make the rest of us look bad.
DaVinci31 - 7/22/2014, 9:44 PM
"In the X-Men world of the movies we never hear them talk about a famous super team called the Fantastic Four and in the Fantastic Four movie they are fantastic because they are the only ones of their kind meaning there aren't other people with super powers on the streets."

One of the few reasons, the X-Men franchise needs to be rebooted.

"They said are you interested in doing the Fantastic Four movie and I said I was only interested in doing a Fantastic Four movie, meaning a movie that really honors the Fantastic Four comics. I’m not interested in doing something just to use the title as an excuse to do a goofy kids movie."

"The most important audience for us are the core fans, the fans who love the books and for them to come out and feel like it’s really the first time they've seen the Fantastic Four on the screen."

Is everyone satisfied now?

"I will let you know that our choosing of the Horseman was something that we, Bryan and myself took very, very seriously and did only after an exhaustive review of all the different Horseman, both in the comics and the cartoons who have at one point or another fallen under APOCALYPSE."

"LR: Is there any chance of seeing Nightcrawler in APOCALYPSE?

Simon Kinberg: Is there any chance? There is always a chance."

AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 9:45 PM
I wonder when a trailer will drop?
TheRationalNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:45 PM
So given that they exist in these different domains or dimensions there are some inherent challenges. Part of the fun of working in this realm is trying to overcome those challenges and try to figure out how you can bridge the gaps between different worlds and different dimensions.

I've been saying this ever since they started expressing the challenges of a possible crossover film. Different dimensions speaks the Fantastic Four. It's so many different ways in which these two different universes/dimensions can overlap one another. I think I'd rather see them find their way into the X-Men's world instead though.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/22/2014, 9:45 PM
If this movie bombs it will be good and bad. The good is it will probably be given up on by fox and the rights will revert back letting Marvel use the great F4 villains. The bad is the F4 team will be shelved for a long time.
KurtWagner1225 - 7/22/2014, 9:46 PM
OmegaDaGod-yes please, NightCrawler is my favorite X Men, my boy Kurt Wagner
