Justin Lin and Neal Moritz Team for Highlander Remake

The Fast & Furious director and producer reunite for a new remake.

Summit Entertainment announced today that it has tapped the film making team behind this spring's hit film "Fast & Furious," director Justin Lin and producer Neal H. Moritz, to direct and produce respectively the studio's re-imagination of the cult film Highlander. Summit's Highlander is being written by "Iron Man" screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Peter Davis, long time producer of "Highlander," will also produce the film. Summit acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008.

Summit's film will expand on the original Highlander's core mythology of immortals battling amongst us, hunting each other through the ages. By tapping its newly minted creative team to take its re-imagination to new heights. Plans call for the re-imagination to spur a new franchise for the studio.

"We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises," said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairman of Summit Entertainment. "Neal and Justin have proven more than once that they can deliver an entertaining and exciting blockbuster."

Added Peter Davis of Davis-Panzer Productions, "Justin and Neal are an exciting directing/producing team and I am confident that they will deliver a truly dynamic film while being totally respectful of Highlander Legend."

In Highlander, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman, must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the fabled Prize.

Justin Lin most recently directed the hit action film "Fast & Furious," the fourth film of that franchise. He also directed "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," and "Better Luck Tomorrow."

In addition to "Fast & Furious," Neal Moritz and his Original Film banner have produced a myriad of action films including the upcoming "Flash Gordon" and "The Green Hornet" as well as "I Am Legend," "2 Fast 2 Furious," and "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

For the love of god, WHY?!!!! The first one was PERFECT, and now they're gonna' screw with THAT?! It's bad enough that we found out:

1. Conner and the immortals are from another planet.
2. Scratch that (if you've seen the director's cut of II), they're from an alternate reality thingie (that was never clearly explained).
3. Even though Connor supposedly 'killed' everyone and claimed the prize, apparently being buried in a Japanese cave for 300 years, it doesn't count (but yet it does in a screwed-up kinda' way).
4. Connor really wasn't 'The One' (even though they show him at the end of I beheading the Kurgan and CLAIMING the prize), becuase his cousin Duncan beheads him in a 'mercy killing' (WTF?!).
5. Duncan finally claimes the prize, but it's not 'the prize' of the first film - this 'prize' is the ability to knock people up (again, WTF?!!).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - they should have ended it at the first ('There can be only ONE!'). Are you getting this, Mr. Panzer?

Two reasons they are doing this: they are out of new ideas and when they see "Batman Begins," "Casino Royale," and "Star Trek" succeed they can't think of not re-booting.

Im pumped for this reboot(wow cant believe i just said thouse words) but its true. The first one was epic...AND THEN we have the rest that ruined it. Hopfully they can make one that will carry over in a trilogy better.

Oh and did anyone notice that in EVERY Highlander movie/ Tv show, after they tell a chick their Immortal they instantly get laid....EVERY SINGLE TIME. Watch em over if you dont believe me

I only count the first movie..[frick] every one of the others and that TV show too. But even that first one had its problems. Some very dodgy bits.

Check out 1.01. Even watching as a kid i cringed. One of the worst line deliveries in film history.

I actually liked the series. It had its problems but it wasnt too bad. The first one was great and yeah the others were not so great. The edited version of the second movie was okay and the EndGame had some decent fight scenes but I am really hoping the remake is good. I cant imagine that it will be but since they are going to make it anyway heres hoping...

The first one was good.

However, it did give birth to the WORST MOVIE SEQUELS EVER!

The two sequels are horrible. There is no continuity between 2 and 3 at all. Both are direct sequels to the original with completely different plots and characters.

I loved the first one. It was low budget and weak in many ways, but like Loganoneil said, he already claimed the prize in the end. Sooo...WTF? If they wanted to expand it, this would be one of those times that a three-tiered film story arc would be appropriate. I am laughing as I watch this and listen to Christopher Lambert's muddled nonscottish French accent. Again, as Ror noted, its the charm of the film that gives a little cringe within. LOL

@ Logan, I'll be honest I was not at all excited about a reboot of one of my favorite childhood movies. It was actually Highlander that introduced me to Sean Connery, I discovered Ramirez before Bond.

Nostalgia kept me from being very happy about this, but you illustrated a really great point... The original was good, but all that followed was a mottled contrivance of convenient chronology and laughable badness. If nothing else this reboot will allow Highlander to feel like a true saga instead of a great beginning followed by an illogical haphazard continuation of a fulfilled storyline.

nerosday - 9/23/2009, 2:38 AM
plus the first one had Queen doing the soundtrack..........priceless.
DeathWalker - 9/23/2009, 5:46 AM
Maybe they can get MIKA for the reboot's soundtrack... "Everybody's gonna kill today, kill today, kill TODAY!!!" Yes, that was sarcasm...

Well i for one liked the show (to an extent) but only saw Highlander3 which sucked as much as Van Damme's Cyborg. So i'm not against a reboot if it means giving the franchise a make-over of epic proportions and a continuity to be revered. If those aren't they're "plan", they shouldn't bother. I bet they get Daniel Radcliffe for it... that's how much faith i have in those guys.

Cant wait for this one
xXkryptoniteXx - 9/23/2009, 7:19 AM
the first one was good. it had lex luthor in it.
superdog - 9/23/2009, 8:11 AM
SdProphet90 - William Panzer was the executive producer on the original 'Highlander' and owns the rights to the property. He's the schmuck who's responsible for all these crappy sequels... and the reboot talk - apparently he's trying to squeeze every drop of blood from this stone.
loganoneil - 9/23/2009, 11:30 AM
DeathWalker- The soundtrack was priceless!
ironknight27 - 9/23/2009, 11:59 AM
why? the first one was awesome!
