A few weeks ago, Variety reported that 20th Century Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was on track for a $68M opening weekend and based on these latest figures it appears those numbers were accurate. It pulled in $26M to $27M on Friday, which puts it on pace for a $68M to $70M 3-day weekend. For comparison: the 2011 film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, opened with $54.8M.

There's one surprise, audiences only gave the film an 'A-' Cinemascore. Kind of schocking since the reviews have been outstanding for the big-budget film. It currently has a 91% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline cautioned, box office figures may encounter a dip on Sunday because the World Cup Final game between Germany and Argentina.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is currently estimated to gross $4.4M tonight and is expected to cross $200M tomorrow; it will end the three-day with about $14M to $15.8M. After that, Tammy is expected to drop about 48% in its second weekend, taking around $11M to $12M, followed by How To Train Your Dragon 2 with $5.6M to $5.7M. Earth to Echo may fall about 33% in its sophomore frame competing for the No. 5 spot at the moment with 22 Jump Street; they both may take in around $5.5M for the weekend. In its second week, Deliver Us From Evil is a frightening 57% off and should take around $4M+.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is being directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), from a screenplay written by Mark Bomback, Scott Z. Burns, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The cast includes: Andy Serkis (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Public Enemies, The Great Gatsby), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, The Harry Potter film series), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia, Wrath of the Titans, Rock N Rolla), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line) and Judy Greer (The Descendants, Three Kings, 13 Going on 30). The film climbs into theaters July 11, 2014

@Mike89

NICKHART - 7/12/2014, 12:08 AM
why is an A- shocking? a 91% is an A-
FastFlames - 7/12/2014, 12:09 AM
I think I liked Transformers 4? Maybe I just haven't slept for like 22 hours...

Wow. Just got out of the theatre. What an awesome movie. Had me stuck the whole movie.

@NICKHART

Cap2 got an "A" with 89% in RT. RT has nothing to do with the cinemascore and is shocking because people expected an "A+", but shocking doesn't mean bad
nailbiter111 - 7/12/2014, 12:27 AM
NICKHART - the cinemascore and rotten tomatoe score usually don't align. As an example: Transformers: Age of Extinction received an 'A-' cinemascore too, but it has an 18% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. You would figure with critcs loving it, and it being popcorn-friendly, it would at least garner an 'A' if not an 'A+' Cinemascore.

Best movie this year. Outstanding visuals, probably the best CGI I've ever seen. Amazing memorable performances, Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell are the obvious stand-outs. There was great action that actually mattered and moved the story forward instead of just being there for the cool explosions, and just a wonderfully told story.

This is easily my favorite Planet of the Apes movie
titansupes - 7/12/2014, 12:32 AM
Fantastic movie.
defenderofthefaith - 7/12/2014, 12:35 AM
It's looking like Maleficent might eventually pass The X-men. That's surprising.
TheGrayson - 7/12/2014, 12:42 AM
It was truely an amazing movie. Go go Andy Go!
Humperdink - 7/12/2014, 12:43 AM
I really need to see this but I'll probably have to wait until next week.
loki668 - 7/12/2014, 12:46 AM
Serkis comes to town and finds that there's no business like monkey business!

I know that it's, technically, incorrect but I couldn't resist.
FastFlames - 7/12/2014, 12:47 AM
I want to see this sooooooo bad, but my freind wants me to wait for him to get back from vacation and go see it. I may need a little preview....

I really doubt the world cup finale will affect the box office, the game will be played early morning.
mgeoff88 - 7/12/2014, 1:17 AM
This movie looks amazing for a sequel. I will definitely be checking this out.
lexcorp - 7/12/2014, 1:22 AM

I don't care for Rotten tomatoes, but this movie looks great, so I'll be watching it next weekend. Syfy did a marathon of the originals on Thursday, and I caught Battle of the Planet of the Apes....good stuff.
