Expect to Wait Another Four Years for AVATAR 2

Producer John Landau was in attendance for a preview screening of James Cameron's 3D version of Titanic. At the event he said the sequel to Avatar is still four years away.

Well this seems a bit out of left field, but maybe the writing was on the wall the whole time, and I let my hoping get the best of my common sense. See at first I said, 'Gosh just a few days ago Sam Worthington said he was meeting with James Cameron in a week to discuss Avatar 2.' Which makes you think the sequel could start filming pretty soon, but in those same interviews he pointed out that Cameron had a story all thought out, but hadn't written the script yet.

According to Landau this morning, the first sequel is “four years away.”

So that’s 2016 by a literal count, though we could be bendy and assume that Christmas 2015 would also be an option. Expect Avatar 3 a year later, as the performance capture and cinematography would take place back-to-back with the second film.

Landau promised that Avatar 2 was going to showcase advanced technology, from the 3D camera system used to the CG and performance capture, but also in terms of a higher framerate. This, he says, is the new frontier that he and Cameron are most interested in pushing. - bleedingcool.com

devil - 1/11/2012, 3:23 AM

tweeeeenkies3 - 1/11/2012, 3:39 AM
I like Zoe Saldana...But, Avatar was so overrated!

I couldn't get into it at all...
Oh well.
TheBatman3000 - 1/11/2012, 3:39 AM
......so anyways...can't wait for the Avengers! lol
GUNSMITH - 1/11/2012, 3:43 AM
BECAUSE OF CAMERON ALL OF HOLLYWOOD WENT 3D, EVEN THE MOVIES THAT WERENT MEANT TO BE 3D WERE CONVERTED TO BE SO FOR AN EXTRA BUCK...
ACira - 1/11/2012, 3:47 AM
Totally ok with waiting... seriously, I could wait longer... the longer the wait, the better IMO...

Actually, wasnt the sequel released last year?

...and I thought the story for the 2nd film couldn't be any more stupid than the 1st...
SUPERSP00NS - 1/11/2012, 3:47 AM
We all know why they're postponing it for 4 years don't we? So James Cameron can rip off another near-decades worth of films yet again! "Hey, this film totally took me like... ten years to make? So that's why it is almost identical to other films that took place in the last ten years... *derp*" Most over-rated piece of toot i've seen in recent years.

All negative comments aside... it was majorly pretty in the cinema. All flash and no subtance. For me it should be in the same ball-park as the Transformers films. Fun. Entertaining. By NO MEANS original film-making.

I really hate how people class him as one of the greatest film-makers of our time.

i thought avatar was a good film, looking forward to the sequel when it eventually hits.
Amazo - 1/11/2012, 4:05 AM
It'll take them that long to write an actual story for it this time round! The first was all show,no substance.
Kayo - 1/11/2012, 4:13 AM
that span of time looks like he will be helming another project, probably battle angel.
thalidomide - 1/11/2012, 4:14 AM
The movie was ok.
Jolt17 - 1/11/2012, 4:16 AM
I liked the first movie (yeah...), and saying that I never think a sequel is necessary. So, I can hardly care; it'd even be a lot better if it'll never be made,
SuperSomething616 - 1/11/2012, 4:25 AM
Good...hated that pile of steaming blue monkey vomit!!!
marvel72 - 1/11/2012, 4:27 AM
@ Amazo

Don't rush it on my account.
95 - 1/11/2012, 4:51 AM
I didn't like my experience in the packed retrofitted IMAX theater. Forced to sit close to the screen made me want to vomit. I honestly felt like I was going to die. The movie was epic by all means, not necessarily overrated rather than incredibly overwhelming and horribly paced which led to me not getting well adjusted to the nauseating blue planet. I'm not big on this having a sequel, but the exploration factor of Pandora's oceans and the technology used to film this is exciting. Otherwise, I don't give a shit if it's ten years away.
Fogs - 1/11/2012, 4:56 AM
OH NO!

I misread and thought he said 40 years! Dammit!
theartofoneness - 1/11/2012, 5:16 AM
i dont mind myself.

regardless of what people thought of the story or movie itself the cg was unbelievably well done. The film feels great, and very emmersive. Cameron definitely brought 3D back in a big way. The problem is that the rest of the industry is struggling to create well done 3d effects too. Cameron really should have wrote a how-to for them.

So I dont mind that we have to wait. The movie was good but its not the most rewatchable one out there. I imagine the second might be. But then again, I suspect that it will also be another psychedelic experience like the first. A surreal reality-mind-bender. Imagine watching 100% life-like aliens at realistic framerates. I wonder if it will trip the mind out a bit :D
Amazo - 1/11/2012, 5:17 AM
@Marvel72
lol Hated Phantom Menace! My point was,the four years could be well spent writing a story instead of perfecting effects or building somekind of new fangled camera as Cameron is want to do.Somehow I think we'll get another special effects bonanza with little or no plot again...
spiderneil - 1/11/2012, 5:23 AM
avatar was good **** the haters!
HarveyDent88 - 1/11/2012, 5:37 AM
Worst film of 2009, I don't see why people thought the film was so good?
djohnpi - 1/11/2012, 6:01 AM
I liked the movie and i will see the second one.
Stumblin - 1/11/2012, 6:49 AM
Oh no, what will I do? I know, continue not giving a damn. :)
dahamma - 1/11/2012, 7:02 AM
Whats with all the hate towards Avatar? Is it cool to hate on it now? lol I liked the first one, so I will def go see the second
Ric - 1/11/2012, 7:03 AM
wtf? another 4 years? cmon! avatar 2 better be good
Toxin - 1/11/2012, 7:44 AM
Why the wait? Does James Cameron need to rent Pocahontas 2 then steal the plot (like he did with the first one) and come up with something as imaginative as unuptainium?
Maximus99 - 1/11/2012, 7:45 AM
I think he's waiting for Dances With Wolves Parts 2 & 3.
Ceejay - 1/11/2012, 7:55 AM
Don't give a flying frak, the first one wasn't worth the wait and ripped off more movies than the years he claimed it took the make! It was a gimmick film at best with appeal only to the current bunch of knuckle-draggers who don't watch old movies so had no idea how unoriginal it was!
CPBuff22 - 1/11/2012, 8:04 AM
Can we wait another 80 years so we can be absolutely sure I am dead by then?
HelaGood - 1/11/2012, 8:06 AM
is a sequel really necessary???
hoodedjester - 1/11/2012, 8:15 AM
It looked good but the story was blah and I couldn't care to go see a 2nd one if he made one.

He should make a new terminator in 3D - set it in the future we see at the start of T2 and give us a good humans vs machines movie. That would be sweet in 3D
airbeyonder18 - 1/11/2012, 8:20 AM
I can wait.
Bartman87 - 1/11/2012, 8:30 AM
Sequel? About Cameron's other love the ocean, bad enough the first one was part propaganda, against the military and Government.
Didn't see it in the theaters and even when I watched it I figured the hype must have been in the 3D because the story was sh17 especially after he said that he had worked on it for so long. It was a rehash of stories that have been around as for the CG that isn't a make or break in a movie for me, effects should be good if you are going to be using them as the primary for your movie.

nld3 - 1/11/2012, 8:33 AM
Do we really need another Avatar movie. I would rather see other Cameron movies.
Ranger14 - 1/11/2012, 8:43 AM
I can wait the rest of my life for Avatar 2. Won't be watching it.
Animarcus - 1/11/2012, 8:54 AM
Wow, I can feel the love for mr. Cameron... lol. I have nothing negative to say about Avatar, it was good entertainment. I find it reassuring that one man cannot have all the talents. He remains, for me, a fabulous producer and technical visionary.

Why not do the "Mountain of Madness" movie, is that project a bit too much for him? Feeling chicken mr McCameron?
plasticman - 1/11/2012, 8:58 AM
Rumor has it that Jim Cameron is working on filming in the fourth dimension and once he gets the lens just right production will start.

That or he already as the lenses to bring the 4th and 5th dimensions to film and is simply waiting to let the electronics companys milk all they can out of each technology boost before introducing what he knows.
plasticman - 1/11/2012, 8:59 AM
@ animarcus....Cameron on Mountain of Madness. That would be a dream come true.
LordHuck - 1/11/2012, 9:12 AM
Camron didn’t rip anyone off. He told a timeless story that people have been telling and retelling for a 1000 years. He told it as good or better than anyone before him.
WolvieCBM - 1/11/2012, 9:21 AM
It was a rip-off of many films and stories. John Carter story (Burroughs' novel), Dances with Wolves film and some others. While I don't mind that, and visually Avatar was great, it is sad when someone calls the upcoming John Carter film an Avatar rip-off when it's the other way around.

I don't mind seeing the sequel, because Cameron knows his thing when it comes to technology, so he and Weta will probably invent something new for Avatar 2 which will help a lot of other movies in the future.
TheJoker52 - 1/11/2012, 9:30 AM
PLEASE DONT MAKE A MOVIE EVER NO SECOND ONE , EVER PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A JOKER MOVIE OR BLACK PANTHER OR I KNOW HOWARD THE DUCK NEVER GOT A SEQUEL WHAT ABOUT THAT !!!!in all seriousness this movie is the Titanic of its type , a bunch of whiny bitches loved it , but me i knew the boat would sink and just want to watch them drown !!!!!
Lilvic92 - 1/11/2012, 9:41 AM
You people claim Avatar to be overrated but than turn around and say The Dark knight is the best filom ever made?...What the hell ? Ya'll must have this movie mistaken for The Last Airbender or something.
Rothwilder - 1/11/2012, 9:43 AM
@Intruder

When you are right, you are sooooo right. My thoughts exactly.

People are hindsight hating.
spiderneil - 1/11/2012, 9:46 AM
2.7 billion

and yet everyone hated it? whatever.
I thought avatar was awesome
spiderneil - 1/11/2012, 9:47 AM
that said I would rather see a battle angel alita movie than an avatar sequel.
Mechagino - 1/11/2012, 9:52 AM
Bleck, Avatar didn't deserve to make a billion dollars and it's quite a disgrace to cinema that a boring, unoriginal, and straight out plagiarism would make this much but then again James has stolen before quite a bit.

@Intruder and @LordHuck: Well then, FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS!

The first Avatar was completely overrated. It had a good underlying message, but it focused mostly on special effects & it dragged on & on. Plus, a sequel would only ruin it considering how the first ended. The only reason they're doing a sequel is for money.
