Miniatures Used In LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN
Hit the jump to check out the amazing miniatures that special effects company, New Deal Studios, created for the 2003 comic book movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
When The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen arrive in Venice to stop the Phantom from blowing up Venice, they soon realize they are too late. Bombs that have been planted all throughout the City of Water begin to go off, which makes the buildings collapse and slam into each other like dominos. The group quickly device a plan to stop the domino-like effect, by driving their automobile into the heart of the city and firing a missile. If it works correctly the buildings destroyed with the missile will stop the domino of collapsing buildings. Sawyer, Quatermain. Mina, and Grey take part in this dangerous mission, while Dr. Jekyll decides to stay behind.
It's an entertaining scene, and I give it even more credit for it's wonderful use of miniatures, by New Deal Studios, to help put it all together.
New Deal Studios: "Design, fabrication and photography of Venice miniature effects sequence: 1:5 scale stylized city of Venice with effects including radio-controlled and "endless wire" effects-rigged cars with puppets; car driving through Venice, car launch, exploding theater and sinking buildings. Fabrication and photography of 1:12 scale Tiger Bay English Wharf."
You can see all of that in the video and images below. There is also a second video, in which special effects artist Mike Joyce discusses and shows the warehouse full of miniature zepellins, that were created for the film.

From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac. --Bret Fetzer
