PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS: Polyphemus Animatronic Head & Tyson Concept Art
Academy Award-winning character effects company, StudioADI, has released two video detailing their contributions to Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. One, features test footage of an unused animatronic head that they built for the blind cyclops, Polyphemus.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters was a disappointment domestically, pulling in $60 million, but internationally the film has been doing exceptionally well, with $92 million. The film is filled with computer-generated effects, but at one point producers were planning to use animatronics to create Polyphemus, the blind Cyclops (Robert Maillet). It didn't make it into the film, but studioADI has posted a video showcasing their work on the project, and a description explaining the change in direction. Below the video & description, is an image of the digitized version of Polyphemus, that was used in the film.
The second video, features lots and lots of alternate designs that studioADI artists conjured up for Percy Jackson's half-brother, Tyson the cyclops.
"Before we take an animatronic on set, we give it as much testing as possible. In the case of Polyphemus from PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, we recorded our own in-house dialog from the script and pre-programmed the lip sync. By the time we shot, the script had changed. Much of the character's dialogue and action would not be settled on until post-production. The result is a heavily digital character. Here's our version." - studioADI
"While Polyphemus was intended to be a bellowing fearsome cyclops, Tyson needed to be a cyclops who was a "fun, cool guy". Easy to say, but what exactly does that look like? That's when the design team at ADI started creating concepts. Whether drawings, clay maquettes, photoshop art, it doesn't matter--it's all just to explore character possibilities. Once actor Douglas Smith was cast things started to focus. Ultimately, the studio mandate was to preserve as much of Douglas as possible. Here are the highlights of the process." - studioADI

Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.
