awesome. better than i expected. even better than an unexpected journey - which i didn't think possible.

The end dragged on way too long and Smaug was talking to Bilbo for like half an hour

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is the first time I've been disappointed with Peter Jackson's embellishments on the story. Tauriel and Legolas is fine, that love triangle is a little much, but the Smaug "fight" scene in the mountain? Way overboard. It completely diminishes Smaug and makes him look like a chump. In the book the dwarves are (rightfully) too scared to even enter the treasure room, and when Bilbo steals something Smaug gets pissed and attacks the mountain trying to find them. That would've been cool to see! But no, we get an unnecessary and over the top CGI extravaganza just because we can. It's just too much for me, and I'm usually really level-headed about this stuff. But overall the movie is good and Smaug looks AMAZING! They just cut out parts of the book and replaced that time with unnecessary filler. Disappointing and disenchanting, but still enjoyable.

I agree that the overabundance of CGI at the end was really a turn off for me. Smaug looked fantastic though.

The CGI-loaded action scenes became a bit much and the dragged-out sequence where the dwarves try to capture Smaug, while a good change to make the main characters a little more heroic, goes on WAY too long (plus, who thought trying to burn a DRAGON to death would be a good idea?). Overall, I definitely enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing it again, but it's easily my least favorite in the entire Middle-Earth series.

Plus, Smaug lived up to all the hype and his conversation with Bilbo was absolutely amazing!

To say i was dissapointed is an understatement!! too much comedy for my liking and putting Legolas and the bint in it really done my brain in!! loved the Smaug bit and Gandalfs scene's. but at the end of the day i took my son to watch it and he loved it so that to me is all that matters.

Just amazing movie. CGI is best of the year with GRAVITY. Very good story also.
silverageguy - 12/15/2013, 9:32 AM
It was simply awesome! It just doesn't make sense to destroy such an epic presentation by being overly critical...just enjoy the ride!
Ragnaroknroll - 12/15/2013, 9:33 AM
@Super12, my thoughts exactly. The interspecies love triangle is an absolutely awful addition and the MacGyver dwarves playing Tom and Jerry with Smaug was ridiculous.

It's a shame because these films are at their finest with scenes lifted directly from Tolkien's pages. Smaug did look amazing though.

Just walked out... Amazing amazing film!

Smoug the Awesome, Bilbo & Gandalf etc... Such an awesome ride!
Didn't think Dragon scene will be like 30+ mins long & even in the 3rd film!

Didn't see it

Hobbit 2 was such a great movie, better then the first I think, the dragon was simply beautifully done, had some awesome fight scenes, the barrel scene was exciting, cant think of any complaints, seen it twice already
hartley07 - 12/15/2013, 7:20 PM
i actually liked the first one better. The things that were in the book they rushed through before you could enjoy it, and then lingered on the extra stuff they added. Awesome fight scenes, smaug was great, but I wouldve enjoyed it if they lingered on the stuff from the book a little longer.

Oh I didnt like the gigantic black arrow/spear. it makes more sense than a small arrow cause you are shooting a fricken DRAGON, but still, in Bard's speech later he says 'i always recovered you'. yeah no crap its like 6 feet long, you think he'd ever LOSE that thing?
JoshuaDBr - 12/15/2013, 8:40 PM
This movie really dragged on and some people don't like that. But I honestly think think the Longer the movie the better. And Smaug was totally awsome!
CaptainMexico - 12/15/2013, 8:47 PM
my friend and I ate some mushrooms and saw it last night, it was EPIC! Smaug steals the show, there's one line he says in particular that will send shivers up your spine. The Gandalf side quest is pretty awesome too, lots of dope wizard stuff. Killer fight choreography too.
Nomis1800 - 12/16/2013, 5:15 AM
That's a lot of money!!

I LOVED the film!!!!! What a spectacle! Smaug was THE highlight, what a Dragon, very very very fierce.
Other highlights were the barrel sequence, the spiders and Gandalf journey in Dol Guldur.

As for the Extended Edition, I hope we're going to see more of Beorn and I know we're going to spent more time in Mirkwood, meeting Thrain and quite possibly also spent more times with the Elves in Thranduil's Hall. I think that most of the EE will be in the first half of the film. Brings it more into balance that way.
UrbanTheEmcee - 12/16/2013, 10:27 AM
