Milo Manara's SPIDER-WOMAN #1 Variant Cover Is Bound To Stir Up Controversy

But then, that's the point isn't it? Manara (who is known for his overly sexualized/erotic artwork) has put out a really good variant cover for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Woman relaunch. Really good? Try ASStounding! (sorry). Take a look after the jump.

CBR have posted a list of Marvel's Spider-verse solicitations for 2014, and among them was this little beauty below. Yeah sure the horny fanboys will love it, but with the major comic companies (apparently) serious about making a conscious effort to depict their female characters as more than just sex objects...well, Manara's cover doesn't exactly move things forward.

SPIDERWOMAN001Manara-06299

Oh, and here's the slightly less pervy regular cover from Greg Land:

SPIDERWOMAN001-logo-7114a

New Ongoing Series/Spider-Verse Tie-In! Jessica Drew has been an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and agent of S.W.O.R.D., an Avenger and so much more. But nothing could prepare her for the multidimensional insanity that is Spider-Verse! A war is brewing, and every spider-character in the multiverse is a target! But being a target is something Jessica Drew just won’t abide. She’s a woman with a mission and with Silk, the newest spider-character on the block at her side, she’ll have to put all her training to the test if she wants to make it out of Spider-Verse alive! SPIDER-VERSE KICKS OFF A NEW ONGOING SERIES! • Dennis Hopeless (CABLE & X-FORCE, AVENGERS: ARENA) and Greg Land (UNCANNY X-MEN) bring you a universe spanning adventure starring Jessica Drew Spider-Woman and the newest spider-hero, SILK!

Looks like she's gonna take a shit off the edge of the building.
Nomis - 8/19/2014, 1:14 PM
Similar to the poses from the ANT comics! Nearly every on have her butt up in the air!

crawley - 8/19/2014, 1:14 PM
Baaaahahahahah check out the position of the fingers on her right hand.
TheManFromMars - 8/19/2014, 1:14 PM
"ASStounding" would be a better pun, just saying.
JatevinM - 8/19/2014, 1:14 PM
That looks horrible.
JoshuaGraham - 8/19/2014, 1:15 PM
That art is not that great actually, the right ass cheek looks bigger then the left.
Superior - 8/19/2014, 1:15 PM
Looks a bit too pastel to be a cover, but it still looks good. But that's a lot of ass coming from a variant.
TheDudeRusty - 8/19/2014, 1:15 PM
Art is shit-ting over the building.
RorMachine - 8/19/2014, 1:17 PM
Tha man from Mars...dammit..you're right! Thanks:)

I'm not a horny fanboy. I'm just horny.
TheDudeRusty - 8/19/2014, 1:17 PM
Still better than the entire TASM2
Doopie - 8/19/2014, 1:18 PM
already posted as part of another article I believe. It's nice to look at again though
MercwithMouth - 8/19/2014, 1:18 PM
LOL...feminists are gonna kill us all.
SauronsBANE - 8/19/2014, 1:19 PM
LMAO. This is basically a public plea from this Manara guy, saying "PLEASE DON'T EVER TAKE ANY OF MY ARTWORK SERIOUSLY EVER AGAIN"

I'm in utter disbelief that we're in the year 2014, and people still draw superheroes like this. Wow.
Klone - 8/19/2014, 1:21 PM
Why is it good artists (the drawing and colour is nice) have to be lower themselves by doing this?
SauronsBANE - 8/19/2014, 1:22 PM
Even that 2nd cover isn't much better. Spider-Woman's right leg looks like a stump, as if her leg was blown off in an IED explosion, and I have no idea what kind of pose is going on in the background. Absolutely awful artwork.
MercwithMouth - 8/19/2014, 1:22 PM
On the original cover...Why does she look like a double amputee?
SpiderFraud - 8/19/2014, 1:24 PM
Dayum gurl.

@JoshuaGraham

That's because one leg is positioned differently than the other, so the glute reacts accordingly. It's anatomically correct.

And there won't be controversy over this. There's covers that show more that get published on a weekly basis. I don't even see how it's sexualized. People see what they want to see. If you're looking for it' it's there. Not to mention, that when this is published, the title logo will likely cover it.
Superhero96 - 8/19/2014, 1:33 PM
This is too funny.
DangerRoom - 8/19/2014, 1:39 PM
The only things i find controversial about this are her super small nose and humungous lips.
DEFA - 8/19/2014, 1:39 PM
jkajkajkja... looks like body paint.
Elbarto63 - 8/19/2014, 1:41 PM
Are you seriously complaining for this cover? That is Manara's style. Women with very sexy although awkwardly exaggerated and anatomically weird bodies.

The man is a god. Very old school.

A bit of a double-standard coming from the website that will only publish suggestive pictures of female cosplayers.

NoPhucksGiven - 8/19/2014, 1:41 PM
She is in a dumb pose. It looks awkward.
CaptainObvious - 8/19/2014, 1:41 PM
Did Frank Miller draw this.
RorMachine - 8/19/2014, 1:42 PM
"I don't even see how it's sexualized"

Umm..what?

Repoman - not true! https://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/notyetamovie/news/?a=104638

Re-posted for emphasis. That's just...wow.
REPOMAN - 8/19/2014, 1:44 PM

The ratio is way higher for female only cosplay threads.

vtopa - 8/19/2014, 1:44 PM
Its hot. Who cares about this exploitation stuff. We have male heroes with their shirts off all the time.
