Judge Dredd Concept Art And Director Update

Well, its actually more of a down-date! No Director is attached. Slashfilm has some disturbing news about both Dredd and Lobo...
Slashfilm visited the UK equivalent of Comic-Con, the MCM Expo the other day. The major panel saw Andy Diggle, Jock and Idris Elba taking to the stage to promote The Losers. And, Alan Grant at a separate on discussing media/comic crossovers. Slashfilm spoke to all concerned about both the Judge Dredd movie and Guy Ritchie's take on Lobo..

This from Slashfilm...

"Coming off of a question about production and concept design for The Losers and its relationship to Jock’s original art in the comic, I asked Jock about the Judge Dredd picture for which he’s been creating concept art and for which Alex Garland has written a screenplay. I wanted to know what we all want to know: is there a director attached? Quite simply, he said no, “there’s not a director attached at the moment”

More concrete information came from Alan Grant. His soapbox topic appeared to be how aggrieved he was feeling that the Lobo film Joel Silver and Guy Ritchie are working up is getting designed to be a PG-13, which he rightly indicated as going absolutely against the original concept of the thing. He stressed that neither he, Keith Giffen nor Simon Bisley had been called upon to collaborate or even consult on the movie.

It became clear that Grant had no real idea how likely a new Judge Dredd film was becoming. When asked, he told us that neither he nor John Wagner, Dredd’s creator, had heard anything from Rebellion or DNA and that no kind of input from the comic’s team had been sought. This, he wanted us to know, was the reason he felt the first film went so disastrously wrong. He’s clearly expecting the same from the second."

Mmm. Not very good news for either project I'm sure you will all agree..still, lets stay optimistic, at least there is no way the new Dredd movie can be as bad as the last one anyway!(sorry Shaman:)

Looking foward to Lobo more than Judge Dredd.
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 8:06 AM
Ahhhhh BS!!!

THis is great news, JUDGE DREDDS gonna be Awesome!! Better than MAD [frick]ing MAX 4!! ; D

An bring on LOBO! HELL YEAH!!!

Any news is good news!!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 8:14 AM
P.S. The last COFF DREDD movie wasnt a DREDD movie, it was a STALLONE ACTION pic!! No more than that! ; D

Thats like saying The MAD MAX THUNDER DOME was SHAWSHANK material lmao!!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 8:16 AM
I'm really looking forward to a new Dredd movie! The Stallone one wasn't too bad, Armand Assante was a great villain. I just didn't like that they showed Dredd's face right off the bat.

I guess it's always going to be the problem casting a big name actor to a CBM role that wears a mask. There's little marketing value for them when they have their face covered up for most of the movie.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 8:21 AM
they better not recast dredd though. some people on here (lee77) dont like recasting. if its not stallone the movie will blow.
superdog - 10/26/2009, 8:23 AM
IF YOU F UP THE SECOND ONE I'LL BE PISSED.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 8:23 AM
Another reboot. Awesome. I think the term 'reboot' should not be used. They should be called 'deja vu' films. Har! Har!
SirPrize - 10/26/2009, 8:34 AM
@ superdog: Everytime a movie recasts, I conider killing puppies and eating aborted fetuses.
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 8:38 AM

DOG @ STALLONE movie wasnt even a JUDGE DREDD movie??? Eh lol??!

It was JUDGE DREDD by NAME only dude!

Its time we got a real JUDGE DREDD movie!

GERARD BULTLER (or something/ Chin) Keep the Helmet on from start tp finish = $$$$ !!!

An how the [frick] is this gonna be a reboot???!

We aint had a real JUDGE DREDD movie yet lol??

LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 8:40 AM
Lee, you can't just dismiss the news that neither project gives a flying [frick] about the creators of the characters enough to even consult them! Any news is good news? What the hell does that mean!

The last Dredd movie failed as an adaptation and as a movie imo. It seemed to be an exercise in just how far a movie can go to alienate the characters fan base. The mask coming off is just the tip of the iceberg. They completely missed the whole point of the story and the character. And its ironic that they cast Stallone in a part that seems perfect for him because Dredd does not show any emotion and is very stoic..so they cast Stallone and get him to emote??(or try to). He sucked. Add Rob Schneider to the mix and you have a Dreddful suckfest(oh yeah, i went there!). Leee is right, it was just a generic action movie and not a very good one at that.
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 8:41 AM
we havent had a real gijoe movie yet either. so im all for scrapping that pos, recasting, and starting from scratch. you ok with that lee77?
superdog - 10/26/2009, 8:41 AM
the first one was a bad movie, but i'll be damned if i don't watch it when its on, lol. I AM THE LAW!!!!

@ superdog

yeah, gi joe was a gi joe by name only, in fact, dredd was closer to the comics than joe was to its source. lol
CorndogBurglar - 10/26/2009, 8:44 AM
It's disrespectful to not even ask the creator of the property to consult. Douche bag Hollywood egos. Just check out League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as a cautionary tale for what happens when you're ignorant of the subject material and arrogant enough to believe you know better. Not that Moore would've had anything to do with that abortion anyway.
imnotwearinghockeypants - 10/26/2009, 8:44 AM
@ multi

i agree about face time, but thats kind of an actor's ashollery coming through, i'm thinking. how much of hugo weaving's face did we see in v for vendetta???
CorndogBurglar - 10/26/2009, 8:46 AM
You reckon CDB? I actually thought Joe was closer..I actually thought Dredd was the worst adaptation I have ever seen, just in terms of completely missing the entire point. Dredd is a fascist. Mega City 1 is a totalitarian state..the Judges are not "a bit on the harsh side" like they are in that movie, they are cold blooded, ruthless killers. The only nice thing I can say about it is it looked [frick]ing great..amazing cinematography..thats all i Got!
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 8:49 AM
@ROr: F*ck dude! Why did you have to mention Rob Schnieder?!? I forgot that guy existed :(

@Bman: Aborted Fetus would be an awesome name for a rock band
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 8:49 AM
DOG @ Lmao!! ; D

LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 8:50 AM
HOCKEYPANTS-I AGREE, HOLLYWOOD LIKES PUSHING OUT THINGS THAT JUST MAKE MONEY ON GOOD IDEAS AND BLOTCHING THEM UP WITH EXTRAS AND CRAPOLA SO MUCH THAT THE ORIGINAL CONTENT THAT WAS GOOD IS SMOTHERED IN DOO DOO. WHY CANT THEY DO IT THE WAY FANS WANNA SEE IT? BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GREEDY BASTARDS, AND THEY TURN GOOD IDEAS INTO THEIR WHORES AND THEY PIMP THEM UNTIL THEY ARE USELESS.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 8:51 AM
HA HA!!! Thanks for the sympathy, Ror LOL :P

Yeah, LEEE is right! The Last Judge Dredd film was only a Stallone film, which happened to be my ALL TIME FAVORITE Stallone film and easily in my top 10 action films and top 5 comic book films LOL :P Even though they didn't come anywhere close to the source material which i wasn't a fan of prior to the movie. I guess that's what "saved" me LOL :P

I say that Stallone was an AWESOME Judge Dredd and they could keep him all while fixing every other aspect they need to fix. I. E. NO [frick]ING SCHNIDER!!!!! And more Helmet!!! Other than that, Stallone should still be Dredd even though Stevenson and Pearlman would be great choices ;)
Shaman - 10/26/2009, 8:51 AM
@ CorndogBurglar: Good point. I guess it all depends on who's behind the mask.
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 8:52 AM
Yeah @ ROR @ Gotta agree, DREDD was the worst, maybe not CATWOMAN standards but worst near adaption ever!!

Make a okay well good Action movie, bout it lol!

No one that has read a JUDGE DREDD comic book can say it was a good DREDD moviE!

Though @ SHAMAN @ It was one of STALLONES better movies lol an im not taking the pi$$ man, im a big STALLONE fan too!

Its a weird one, its a good ACTION MOVIE but a lame comic book movie?!?! Pity it couldnt of been both, it wouldve blown HOLLYWOOD away!

Hey you heard the news dude! After RAMBO 5, he's filming ROCKY 7, true sh!t! Check out Firstshowing.net!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 8:52 AM
@ MultiPurposePoni: Haha, I was trying to compare recasting with the worst thing I could think of. I felt sick just typing it.
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 8:56 AM
I really hope Rocky kills himself in the next one. And i hope Rambo gets eaten by that beast he'll be huntin'. Can't wait for Expendables though and i really hope he gets to be Dredd again to right the wrongs!!!
Shaman - 10/26/2009, 8:59 AM
ROR-I AGREE THE LOOK WAS COOL, DIANE LANE IN TIGHT BLACK PANTS THAT WAS COOL, ABC WARRIOR WAS COOL...BUT YEAH IT COULD HAVE BEEN WAYYYY WAYYY BETTER..."I AM, THE LAWWRRR, DROP...YOUR WEAPONS OR PREPARE TO BE JUDGED!"...HAHAHA EEYYYHHHHHHHH....STALLONE.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 9:00 AM
Hey if its to right the wrongs, im all for it!!!

Rule one though, keep the helmet on! ; D

Yeah cant wait for EXPENDABLES too!!!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 9:01 AM
LEE-NOTHING IS A WORSE ADAPTION THAN CATWOMAN...THATS MOVIE IS THE DESIGNATION FOR SLAPPING A COMIC FANIN THE FACE MOVIE.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 9:03 AM
hah, yeah he delivered that line like [frick]in Inspector Cluseau. "I am... the law, and i am here, to investigate zee murders"

The ABC robot looked cool alright..but who was he?? Which ABC warrior? Hammerstein? They didn't even give enough of a [frick] to find out about the character..that was the equivalent of what they did to Bane in the Shumaker debacle.
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:05 AM
I EM THE LUH!
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 9:06 AM
ANYONE KNOW IF MILO VENTIMILLO FROM HEROES IS REALLY STALLONES SON?THEY GOT THE SAME JACKED UP SLANT TO THEIR MOUTHS WHEN THEY URRRR URRRR URRRRR....YOU KNOW?
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 9:09 AM
@Ror: Did they NEED to give any more info about the ABC warrior? I mean. . . it was a robot. what else did they need to explain?

@GUN: Catwoman was the CBM equivalent of an aborted fetus, just ask Bman
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 9:12 AM
I dunno Poni, how about everything? Were you happy about Bane in BnR..I mean, he was just a henchman, what else is there to explain?
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:16 AM
@Ror: Bane was a PERSON with a HUGE backstory in Batman canon. The ABC robot was a . . . robot. It didn't need motivation. It didn't need a purpose. It was a tool like the Lawgiver. Did you want that item to have a deeper backdtory as well?

I totally understand that the Dredd movie was a bastardization of the source material, but do we have to worry about trivial details? There were enough problems with the interpretation of the story as is without having to get picky.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 9:24 AM
Obviously your not a 200AD fan! Dude, the robot was only a mindless robot in the movie..that character(actually an amalgamation of a couple of the ABC warriors) most closely resembles their leader, Hammerstein, who is a major character in the Judge Dredd world and features heavily in many stories. They [frick]ed over that character worse than Bane in fact, at least he got to keep his name!
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:28 AM
The ABC warriors were supposed to be "people" ??? LOL :P See, i told you i hadden't followed the comics before LOL :P
Shaman - 10/26/2009, 9:30 AM
No, they were robots, but they went against their programming and turned into sort of vigilantes and bounty hunters..didn't make the Judges very happy! They have their own spin off comic and everything.

Actually, one more thing they did get ok was Mean |Machine Angel..but he should have had much more screen time. And not, yknow, died!

Anyway, I'm not even a complete stickler for complete faithfulness as you guys know, as long as they get the essence right..but guess what! In the words of Bropus..EPIC FAIL. That is the one and only time I will be using that expression:)
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:35 AM
BATMAN AN ROBIN WAS JUST A DISSAPIONTMENT AS A WHOLE.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 9:37 AM
@Ror: I never followed 2000AD religiously, but I've always liked what I did get my hands on.

The point I'm trying to make is how did the portrayal of that robot retract from the story? Was it really that bad of an interpretation? And, yes, it was loosely based on Hammerstein, but no one said it was. It was just a robot.

I'm way more upset that they killed of the Angel gang! What a waste!

If they had gone into depth about The Robot Wars and how the 'warriors' associate with people, it would have been too much for the movie.

I'm sorry bud, but the characters of 2000AD are not nearly as well known as Batman's rogues gallery. What Sh*tmacher did to Bane in B&R was far less understandable than what was done with the ABC warrior in Dredd. I know a couple of long time fans of 2000AD and I never heard them complain about THAT aspect of the movie, whereas nearly EVERY Batman fan thinks the portrayal of Bane in B&R was sh*t.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 9:40 AM
THEY "DUMBTHUGGED" BANE, SAME WITH SABERTOOTH IN X MEN #1
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 9:47 AM
Well, its not about how popular the character was! Its about the liberty surely? and they took a huge one. I was a huge fan of Hammerstein, and so were a few of my mates. 5 reasonable people being pissed off is the same as 5,000..its all relative. I agree that they couldn't have gone into a lot of detail because it wasn't the ABC Warriors movie, but they could have at least attempted to explain some of the backstory, it would have taken the same amount of time as it took for them to explain the made up bullshit that they "found" him in the Cursed Earth and fixed him up. Anyway, yes, i too was pissed about the Angel massacre, but at least they got the characters right..then killed them! I don't get too worked up about Dredd though, it wasn't Dredd..hopefully the next one is..
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:49 AM
LOL "I AM TEH LAAAAA!"

Yep the movie was pretty sucky IMO.
I have never read Judge Dredd comics, but If the comics are anything like the movie, I don't even want to

@ Rorschach01: lulz what's wrong with a little web speak now and again? How come you don't want to say epic fail? Pictures of fail are usually pretty funny. I have made a few of those
DarthMulder - 10/26/2009, 9:50 AM
hahah, i don't know man, something about those words together just annoy me..fail on its own is fine, epic, I have no problems with...
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 9:52 AM
If movies stuck true to the comics, many villians wouldn't die. That's something that a lot of the movie studios don't understand. The bad guy doesn't always have to die.
BmanHall - 10/26/2009, 9:54 AM
karl urban for judge dredd
Anil Rickly - 10/26/2009, 9:55 AM
Yeah, you lot that aint read 2000AD, go an get some 2000AD TRADES, like DREDD and ROGUE TROOPER, ABC etc, you'll know what good comics are, REBELLION has a gold mine IF they use them properly!

GUN @ Lol, i think your right dude! ; D
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 10:01 AM

Man, the trailer still looks good!!?
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 10:05 AM
Leee, I love Rouge Trooper too, but if ever a movie needs to be made from the pages of 2000Ad, its Strontium Dog! Imagine how awesome that would be if done right? They could even tie it into the new Dredd movie if they liked. Guy Pierce for Johnny Alpha, Ron Pearlman for Wulf!

RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 10:05 AM
Infact you can watch the whole movie in 2 minutes lol!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 10:06 AM
@Ror: I understand whee you're coming from. In that same aspect, one can argue that The Dark Knight wasn't "Batman". An interpretation of a character doesn't have to be spot on with the source material to be a decent movie. Shoot, look at X-Men 1 & 2

Even considering my issues with it, I think Dredd was a fun action flick.
MultiPurposePoni - 10/26/2009, 10:07 AM
ROR @ Yeah man, your so right, an great casting picks, perfect!!

Damn, a STRONTIUM DOG movie would be amazing!!

And [frick] CONAN, REBELLION could beat it with SLAINE!!!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 10:09 AM
LMFAO @ Teabag!! : D
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 10:14 AM

GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 10:17 AM
Actually, that's a damn good pic, Anil ;)
Shaman - 10/26/2009, 10:23 AM
@ ror

yeah i would say dredd was closer on spot than joe. keep in mind that dredd was a TERRIBLE adaptation regardless. but if you look at gi joe with the sound muted, you wouldn't even know it was a gi joe movie. thats kind of what i meant.
CorndogBurglar - 10/26/2009, 10:23 AM
I'd be happy with Urban Anil :)
teabag - 10/26/2009, 10:25 AM
@CDB, yeah I guess thats true..to be honest, I was never a Joe fan anyway, thats why It didn't bother me that they shagged the source in the ass..it just bothered me that it was a miserable pile of dog vomit.

That poor dude Tea! haha, serves him right for looking at the camera like that I guess..[frick] him!
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 10:36 AM
LEEE/GUNSMITH/ROR@ lol i like his normal assface the best :P
teabag - 10/26/2009, 10:45 AM
gijoe was a ridiculous pile of shit. i think they should do a picture of the rotund asian kid as duke. that would be great.
superdog - 10/26/2009, 11:02 AM
I THINK IF ROTUND JAPANESE KID SAW THESE PICS HE'D DO A DRAMATIC SQUIRREL LOOK.(WITH DRAMATIC MUSIC ACCOMPANIMENT.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 11:11 AM
WAIT..HOW DID DREAD ARTICLE TURN INTO ROTUND ASIAN BOY?..OH WAIT..MIGHT AS WELL SAY WHY MOST ARTICLES NEAR THE BOTTOM OF COMMENTS TURN INTO BOOBAGE.
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 11:13 AM
@ gunsmith

lol. i think if rotund japanese kid saw these pics he'd commit sepicu, or however you spell that silly word.

teabag - 10/26/2009, 11:26 AM
lee77, like a stripper in vegas, you will just move on to the next poll.
superdog - 10/26/2009, 11:27 AM
The old Dredd movie is my guilty pleasure lol, I know it sucks but its strangley awesome, the comics are amazing tho and this time it would be nice to get a movie that was faithful to those comics, an unknown needs to get cast so that he doesn't get the helmet taken from him. We should never get to see Dredd's face EVER.
Ryden - 10/26/2009, 11:39 AM
i liked sly as dredd
Denn1s - 10/26/2009, 11:49 AM

LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 12:03 PM

Maybe not lol!
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 12:11 PM
Hey guys- new to posting but been reading the site for awhile so please be gentle its my first time.
I have been a fan of Judge Dredd for years (even tried coming up for a script before the first one hit the screen in hopes it would be worth a crap). I was in Screenwriting class and it just seemed like the right thing.
There are a oouple of parts in the Sly movie that I found entertaining- the Block War, and the Angel Gang. But I was a bit of a purist in the mythology- Fergie (totally wrong), Council of Chief judges (time frame of their appearances together wrong just to mention one), Judge Griffin (character wrong and Jurgen was abysmall), Angel Gang (just not hillbilly enough), Judge Hunters or whatever the hell they were called (SJS would have be much more ruthless), not real thrilled with Rico, and just the whole raping of "The Day the Law Died" storyline. Christ, did I actually like anything?

That being said, I am looking forward to another Dredd movie. There are plenty of storylines that are great- the Dark Judges being a favorite of mine. The world of Dredd is ripe for the pickings. Actor wise I think (and I believe someone has mentioned it before) I would go with Jason Statham (with the helmet he would have the look and hopefully he wouldn't have the ego that would leave the helmet on the entire movie).

I too would like to see a Strontium Dog movie- that would be bad ass.

Looking forward to posting more in the future. Be Pure, Be Vigilant, Behave LOL
Synestro40 - 10/26/2009, 12:26 PM
dammit lee77, i thought teabag told you to throw out that picture of his mom!!!
superdog - 10/26/2009, 12:28 PM

LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 12:32 PM
Lmao @ DOG!! Shhhh don't tell TEABAG lol, our secret! ; )
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 12:35 PM
Hey Synestro, welcome to the mad house! The dark judges are a definite must for a new movie. We need to see this happen...

Judge Fear..

"Gaze into the face of Fear"

RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 12:40 PM
Uh teabag ever heard over kill. I like Stallone movies to & wouldn't mind seeing him again in Dredd. I AMMM THE LAWWW!

Spock@ whats over kill?? :)
teabag - 10/26/2009, 12:58 PM
At least Stallone's Judge Dredd movie got the costumes and look of the characters pretty well done. Wolverine, not even close.

Judge Dredd 1
Wolverine 0
shibazz - 10/26/2009, 1:44 PM
LMAO @ TEA!!

Yeah, ive used this B4 but im just HORSING AROUND!

ROR @ Yeah man deff!

Infact that was the plan a few years back that REBELLION will have one of their JUDGE DREDD movies (Yes they was gonna film two back 2 back like originally WITCHBLADE movies were gonna happen too), anyways The DARK JUDGES and JUDGE ANDERSON was or still are planned for a JUDGE DREDD movie! And maybe thet still planning filming two back to back as well??

SHIB @ : D
LEEE777 - 10/26/2009, 1:46 PM
Judge Dredd+1995=SHIT
Judge Dredd+The 21st Century=3 Stars
Lobo+The 21st Century=[frick] YEAH!!!!!!
MrAnonymous - 10/26/2009, 2:10 PM
lol, Shib, thats all that matters I guess! Hey by that reckoning..

FF- 1
X Men 2-0

Electra-1
Watchmen-0

Plus, they didn't even get the outfit right, what the hell was with the mask change? For absolutely no reason they just decided to change the design around the eyes..anyway, enough, I could rant all day about it.
RorMachine - 10/26/2009, 2:16 PM
I'm worried.
Betty - 10/26/2009, 2:32 PM
Ror @ The "Gaze into..." scene never ceases to make say "Hell yeah!!!!!" every time I see it. That just screams future pop culture movie reference.
And I am like you- I noticed in my post and forced myself to stop ranting. Maybe my meds are off LOL. But Dredd can be and should be done alot closer to the mythos than was even attempted. Hershey (wrong, needed to be more hard, hell she is a judge), the penal facility in Aspen (what happened to Titan? the disfigurment of the prisoners). Shit, here I go again... I have to stop.

LEEE777 @ I would expect nothing less but keep to the vigilance ;)
Synestro40 - 10/26/2009, 2:35 PM
LEEE@ your horse doesnt look dark enough lol

teabag - 10/26/2009, 3:16 PM
TEABAG @ lmfao!!! : D

superdog - 10/26/2009, 6:02 PM
Judge Dredd is one of the best comics ever!!!! Looking forward to this redone/reload of a movie. Lets all kick Sylvester Stallone in the nuts!
Number21 - 10/26/2009, 7:26 PM
And another thing, they need to follow the 2000AD stuff, not that DC comic BS they had. No helmet comming off, no clone story. Just hard core enforcement of the law!

Number21 - 10/26/2009, 8:31 PM
21-HE WOULDNT FEEL IT,,I HEARD A RUMOR HE INSTALLED A BIONIC THING, WHERE-AS IN ORDER FOR AN ERECTION HE HAD TO PUMP HIS JUNK UP BY SQUEEZING HIS BALLS, KINDA LIKE THE SNEAKER PUMPS
GUNSMITH - 10/26/2009, 10:39 PM
JON HAMM FOR JUDGE DREDD
ClintEastwood - 10/26/2009, 11:40 PM
Jon Hamm's another good suggestion! I really hope they make another one soon, one that will blow all our minds!!! But as for the helmet, esthetically, i prefer Stallone's waaaaaayyyyyy over the comics version. Stallone's helmet kicked mega ass ;)
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 6:08 AM
The villian of the movie THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, is a good option for JUDGE DREDD.
