I think it's fair to say most people like, or have liked Star Wars at some point in their lives. Sure you'll have some that just don't dig sci-fi type movies in general and that's fine, but for the rest of us I doubt there are many that don't like at least one movie from the saga. And yet, there has been some resistance to the news that we will be getting more movies. Maybe it's because some just don't believe they can possibly good and would rather not have them at all, maybe they feel the damage was done with the prequels and can't be undone, maybe they just don't like that Disney have control and have hired J.J Abrams - I'm sure there are many reasons, point is some people ain't happy. But one man who certainly is happy is Kevin Smith. Smith has been a fan for many years, even referencing Star Wars in most of his movies, and he speaks in depth about the new movies and the impact they are sure to have in an interview with THR. He also drops a couple of names to play younger versions of Han and Lando, but I think (hope) he might just be joking.

"Now part of the Disney empire, Star Wars will become as ubiquitous as Starbucks. It's now as American as baseball and apple pie and as universal as Coca-Cola. In our current business climate of outsourcing, Star Wars may be America's last remaining dependable export. So it's a good thing they're taking the expanded universe approach: giving Yoda, Boba Fett and Han Solo their own movies is creatively and financially ingenious. Grouse though they may that it's not 'their Star Wars', every old-school fan will line up to see a Yoda origin story, or to see David Borneaz as a a young Han Solo winning the Millennium Falcon from Donald Glover's baby-faced Lando Calrissian (Yeah, I'm calling it here!).

You can't call it the commodification of Star Wars because the creator himself first commodified Star Wars a long, long time ago in a decade far, far away with toys and bed sheets and inflatable light sabers. Star Wars has always been big business. It's a roller-coaster ride in a theme park: thrilling, fun and good for repeat business. And as you leave the ride, you're compelled to buy a T-shirt and snow globe memento. Disney paid billions for Star Wars, but with the JJ news and now this subsequent info about the spinoff flicks, they're gonna make double what they paid in the first 10 years alone. After that, the financial Force will be with them. Always."

Pretty hard to argue with that. What do you guys think?

I'm looking forward to what they have in store.

And it's David Boreanaz. The first "e" was left out of his last name.

Listen to Kevin Smith's podcasts and hear what he'd do in a Han Solo movie... Space boobies!

I'm glad that after the sequel trilogy they're doing at least 3 solo films. This is how it should work:
Yoda: Should take place before THE PHANTOM MENACE, and show the birth and rise of the Jedi.
Han Solo: Should take place between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE. It could a young, cocky Han Solo meeting up with Jabba and going on smuggling missions. It could also show the rise of the Empire and the formation of the rebel army.
Boba Fett: It could take place after RETURN OF THE JEDI and show a wounded, beaten Boba Fett trying to prove to himself that he is still the best bounty hunter, kind of like ROCKY BALBOA. It could also show the events between EPISODE VI & VII.

Hey Kevin Smith,

mctrinket - 2/14/2013, 8:35 PM
David Borneaz would hardly be passable as a young Han Solo--I'm pretty sure he's older now than Ford was in the original films.
GodzillaKart - 2/14/2013, 8:40 PM
What do I think? I think I'm tired of ads for Smith's shitty reality TV show popping up all over my CBM page.

While most of us are able to only comment about the craziness of Hollywood and its corporate big shots Smith had a chance to make movies and have some impact on films.
Instead of merely complaining about Jon Peters while a speaker at a Con he couldve made films that gave us more quality the the corporate garbage we get from the studios. Smith couldve made films that put Hollywood on the spot.

But instead he blew it. He was content to be a director of crap and smoke weed on the set and make movies that lost money.
So yeah, Jon Peters is an idiot. And Star Wars just got absorbed into Disney and Disney will continue to exploit 3 films made decades ago just as Lucas has done.

And while Smith can point his finger at Peters, Disney and other filmmakers and laugh, he should point to himself as well.
Since he made Mallrats and Clerks, theres been plenty of guys come into Hollywood and make careers and have an impact while Smith smoked his weed and went to cons and told his cute stories about how Hollywood sucks.

So who sucks more: Peters and Lucas and other corporate guys who made some crap movies or Smith who flushed his chance at making films down the toilet and made nothing?

Smith is the like the guy who talks about how great he could fight, and people listen to his crap until they see him fight and see he cant fight at all. Then when he walks up and talks about fighting people just walk away and the buds who thought he was cool think hes a loser because they saw the big talker get that butt kicked.

Smith talks plenty about whats wrong with Hollywood but when he had his chance to do better, he choked and he proved he could do no better.

Ben Affleck's directed like 2 films and already has done more with that opportunity than Kevin Smith has done in 20 years.

If Affleck or someone like him wants to talk about how corporate Hollywood sucks I might listen. But not from Smith.

If I want to know what its like to be full of crap and have a chance to be a director and blow it, then I'll listen to what Smiths got to say. Because thats one thing he knows all about.
bonesmcgee - 2/14/2013, 8:49 PM
Donald Glover is awesome.
DVonShakari - 2/14/2013, 8:52 PM
We'll finally see how Yoda turned into a little green wise guy. It's like Star Wars and The Muppets mashed together.
Joe6Pack74 - 2/14/2013, 8:55 PM
None of the movies will be as good as Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. It just won't be the same. I would like Disney to just lock the rights up and do nothing with it.
GodzillaKart - 2/14/2013, 9:02 PM
@Ror: "most people like, or have liked Star Wars at some point in their lives"

Damn you Ror! I don't like comments I can't argue with!
DarthTesla - 2/14/2013, 9:03 PM
Kevin is the man, and I usually agree completely with his views and such, but David Boreanaz as Han Solo?

You're [frick]in' high, dude.
GodzillaKart - 2/14/2013, 9:04 PM
And...Smith's comments are spot on.
JoeMomma29 - 2/14/2013, 9:14 PM
@joe6pack

Those are some really great points you made, heck they should make you head of Disney so you can manage the SW franchise!

RamonSuarez - 2/14/2013, 9:19 PM
Commodification of Star Wars? Was Star Wars ever not commodified? The whole idea behind the franchise was to distill basic human myths to create a science fiction epic for youngins.
ThePowerCosmic - 2/14/2013, 9:36 PM
I like Starbucks and I bet What JJ Does with the Franchise will be better than episodes 1-3. I'm all for it, I don't care what this nerd says. He has yet to make a good movie. Yep, you heard me, I don't give a crap about Clerks or anything else he's done.
CavEl - 2/14/2013, 9:36 PM
@ KamenRiderJ22 - Kevin Smith's opinion is not important, we didn't need his view on how to feel.
Greengo - 2/14/2013, 9:57 PM
No shit.

And [frick] Danny Glover.
yingyangpalms - 2/14/2013, 9:59 PM
@Marvelgeek219 You must have a soft spot for Smith. That cute.
You 2 would make a nice couple for sure!
But did I say which films the jackass lit up on?
However, I dont see you defending his horrible filmography or the fact he totally failed as a director.

The guy likes to point his finger at Hollywood but he had his chance to do better and did WORSE!

This guys been riding the Jon Peters/giant Spider thing for years. Telling Jon Peters stories has become his career.
Now hes so far down the line he wants to crowdsource "Clerks 3" into production.
Smith's lower down the totem pole than Porn directors and kids posting videos on You Tube of themselves knocking people out in Chicago.
But if you like his crappy movies and love to hear his BS about Hollywood when hes proven he couldnt make 1 descent film in 20 years then go for it!
0bstreperous - 2/14/2013, 10:01 PM

Or Terrence Howard

Also @neorhan nice tan *cough* you ugly mutha[frick]er *cough*
95 - 2/14/2013, 10:03 PM
This guy is a genius. Or a comedic genius, at the least. Awesome casting, especially with Solo.
Timerider84 - 2/14/2013, 10:10 PM
Up next Star Wars the theme park, everything Star Wars, including a to scale Millennium Falcon, Slave I, X-wings, AT-AT walkers, and everything in between.
XavierLehnsherr - 2/14/2013, 10:52 PM
I just want my Marvel vs Disney vs Star Wars fighting game.
arashini - 2/14/2013, 10:54 PM
donald glover's pretty funny. love his work on community
DocDrop - 2/14/2013, 11:41 PM
@Yingy... First of all, what's wrong with smoking weed? 2nd) How did he have a good chance at being a great director & blow it? He's said for the last 20 years he's an amateur who got lucky. 3rd) Who is Jon Peters? I've been listening to Smith's podcasts every week for 5 years and have never heard him mention that name. And Smith's achievements as one of the godfathers of podcasting has to be commemorated. From 1 show 6 years ago to a network of 25 shows and getting paid tens of thousands of dollars a week to do live shows, sounds like he's doing pretty good for himself.
JasonZumwalt - 2/14/2013, 11:56 PM
I'd definitely watch a Tag and Bink movie directed by Kevin Smith.
ScRipt69 - 2/15/2013, 1:01 AM
I love Kevin Smith, and his crew, I listen to his podcasts every week he open, honest and insightful. You don't have to agree with him but why attack him. he's voicing his opinion as most of you are, why attack his below par film career (still pretty damn good if you ask me, Clerks 1/2, Red State, Dogma very very good films) he creates media for millions of people to enjoy, he involves all his friends in what he does, hes an amazing person, if he has an opinion on Star Wars then so what, why attack his credibility oh and YingYangPalms, he's done a shit load more than you will with your life so typing some 1000 word essay on how he sucks yet knowing alot about him in doing so just shows you are one of the internet trolls he mocks in his podcasts week in week out, hate filled little child spitting venom at people for trying to do something with their lives more than what....well what I am trying to do now I guess.
pepe - 2/15/2013, 1:47 AM
... Nobody listens to Smith anyway... Dont care!!!
parkerray - 2/15/2013, 1:56 AM
script69 just slapped some beyotches down to their seats. amen.
TexasTwoFace - 2/15/2013, 2:17 AM
I don't know why anyone would be afraid Disney would make Star Wars too family friendly, Lucas already did that, plus they have a track record of letting the companies they own do their own thing.
TexasTwoFace - 2/15/2013, 2:20 AM
And if you don't think Clerks and Chasing Amy are good movies well then sorry I really never need to hear your opinion on a movie again. Forgive me if I skip your reviews.
