Sam Raimi On SPIDER-MAN 4; Says Anne Hathaway Would Have Played Black Cat!

It seems Miss Hathaway has a thing for felines. As most of you will know, before the reboot, Raimi was going to deliver a fourth installment of Spider-Man for Sony. Here he talks about his decision to leave the project, while confirming some very interesting rumors..

I still remember the backlash when details leaked on Sam Raimi's planned fourth Spider-Man movie. We knew John Malkovich was on board to play The Vulture, and most fans were fine with that - but when the rumors hit that the character's daughter would also suit up as The Vulturess, well that was different. At the time Anne Hathaway was said to have read for this role although that was never confirmed, but now while talking to Vulture (no not THE Vulture, the website!) Raimi reveals that it was in fact Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat, that she would have played. Obviously Hathaway went on to play DC's take on the feline anti-heroine, Catwoman, in The Dark Knight Rises but did Raimi get to see her performance? "I didn't get to see Batman yet, because I've been working nonstop on Oz, but I hear she's great in it," says the director. "I'm not surprised, because I loved what she was doing with the auditions for Spider-Man 4." Raimi also discusses the "amicable" end of the project with Sony.

"It really was the most amicable and undramatic of breakups: It was simply that we had a deadline and I couldn't get the story to work on a level that I wanted it to work. I was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all. But I couldn't get the script together in time, due to my own failings, and I said to Sony, "I don't want to make a movie that is less than great, so I think we shouldn't make this picture. Go ahead with your reboot, which you've been planning anyway." And [Sony co-chairman] Amy Pascal said, "Thank you. Thank you for not wasting the studio's money, and I appreciate your candor." So we left on the best of terms, both of us trying to do the best thing for fans, the good name of Spider-Man, and Sony Studios."

Now that we've all seen The Amazing Spider-Man, are you glad that Raimi's fourth movie fell apart? Or would you rather have seen what he could deliver given enough time? For the full interview click on the link below.

After all these years, the Vultress thing can finally die.
MrReese - 3/5/2013, 12:43 PM
I liked her as Catwoman especially in this scene

Anne as Felicia tho naw XD
buzzman - 3/5/2013, 12:44 PM
Of course he says that now, after she pulled off Catwoman. I think the Raimi version of Spiderman ran its course with Tobey Maguire. He wasn't terrible, except maybe that 20 minutes of dancing in Spiderman 3, but he wasn't fantastic either. I'm digging TASM - hoping that TASM2 is just as good TASM.
MrReese - 3/5/2013, 12:45 PM
She looked hot idc what Tea says I'd [frick] that horse face with this horse cock XD
MrReese - 3/5/2013, 12:46 PM
"I hear she's great in it. I'm not surprised, because I loved what she was doing with the auditions for 'Spider-Man 4.'"
jessepostal - 3/5/2013, 12:47 PM
Maybe movies would be better these days if directors watched more movies in their down time to see whats working at the moment, what not to do and what's been done.
KeefNCookies - 3/5/2013, 12:47 PM
Raimi blows mad chunks
PantherX - 3/5/2013, 12:50 PM
Well, the more you know.
CaptainObvious - 3/5/2013, 12:51 PM
"Thank you. Thank you for not wasting the studio's money, and I appreciate your candor."

Now let's go waste our money on a Total Recall remake.
LucasMend - 3/5/2013, 12:54 PM
"Thank you. Thank you for not wasting the studio's money, and I appreciate your candor."
Yeah right, they didn't waste money on that godawul reboot. u_u.
CaptainObvious - 3/5/2013, 12:58 PM
@MrMxyzptlk- So making one bad movie negates all the other good films he has done like the Evil Dead trilogy, Darkman, A Simple Plan, the first two Spider-Man films, and Drag Me to Hell?
JorEllinator - 3/5/2013, 1:02 PM
I think he's lying, so people will forget about the Vultress
BenderdickCumPatch - 3/5/2013, 1:09 PM
I smell a lie.
NoJobBOB - 3/5/2013, 1:17 PM
I wouldn't want to see Vulture. Glad that didn't happen.
HellsHammer - 3/5/2013, 1:17 PM
For some reason I doubt this
Rowsdower - 3/5/2013, 1:19 PM
Hathaway used to look hot. What happened?
Spideyguy94 - 3/5/2013, 1:23 PM
Fair play to Sam, I've always respected him as a director and as a person and i will always live spidey 1&2.
PeterParker1991 - 3/5/2013, 1:24 PM
Get over it Raimi. So glad that campy ass trilogy is over...
JorEllinator - 3/5/2013, 1:25 PM
I can't wait for Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 is my favourite horror of all time
PeterParker1991 - 3/5/2013, 1:25 PM
I heard SM4 would've had the damn Vulture and some made up villainess. Raimi's dumb ass was gonna make Felicia Hardy the "Vultress". LAME
uncanny201 - 3/5/2013, 1:25 PM
Sam Raimi isn't even trying anymore.
Godzillafart - 3/5/2013, 1:26 PM
Lot of great aspects to Raimi's trilogy, but I'm happy for the reboot.
DanteSparda - 3/5/2013, 1:27 PM
Time Paradox
CaptainObvious - 3/5/2013, 1:27 PM
@MrMxyzptlk- No filmmaker knows what kind of movie they make until the audience tells them. Directors always make at least one bad movie in their careers and I'm not going to hold SM3 against Raimi when he has 8 other films to back him up. Besides, there are alot more worse comic book movies out there than SM3.
gambgel - 3/5/2013, 1:28 PM
Original trilogy was cool, but too kids friendly to my taste, so yeah, Im glad Amazing Spiderman happened.

It has its little kids friendly momments, but to me it has better quality.
marvel72 - 3/5/2013, 1:29 PM
no thanks,i didn't like her as selina kyle so i definitely wouldn't of wanted her as the black cat.
RorMachine - 3/5/2013, 1:30 PM
The Amazing Spider-Man was decent (at times very good) but being better than Spider-Man 3 doesn't justify its existence imo. It wasn't a patch on Raimi's first two movies.
LucasMend - 3/5/2013, 1:31 PM
Isn't Black Cat supposed to be blond and hot anyway?
ibravosp5 - 3/5/2013, 1:35 PM
Spiderman 3 was a pretty good movie. It had great acting....good characters....the only mishaps I found with it was Peter not keeping his mask on that much, Peter crying a lot, Peter wearing the black suit for only a short period of time and venom not being shown long enough.....
SotoJuiceMan - 3/5/2013, 1:37 PM
The problems that everybody makes clear (the villains, over-stuffed story) are not just the problem, but the problem lay with the tone of the movie. It went darker and instead try to add some darkness with a mix of camp. Especially 3 years before we got a serious Spider Man movie with Spider Man 2. The hype, and overall tone we were going to get we're totally absent in the movie.

Again we have no idea what the first type of idea before Venom was involved, just Vulture being added. The studio is to blame about the forcefulness of Venom.
RPD - 3/5/2013, 1:37 PM
@MrMxyzptlk Maybe in Levi's next life he'll learn english...
JerBear - 3/5/2013, 1:39 PM
@RorMachine
Raimi's Spider-Man movies are extremely overrated. I honestly can't watch them anymore. Any of them. Spider-Man 2 is the sappiest superhero movie in existence. The only reason I'd watch is for the action scenes. The Amazing Spider-Man was a step up from the first Spider-Man IMO. We'll just have to wait and see how TASM2 can match up to Spider-Man 2.
fettastic - 3/5/2013, 1:39 PM
Woulda sucked. We dodged that bullet. Honestly he probably should have stopped after 2.
SotoJuiceMan - 3/5/2013, 1:40 PM
MrMyxzptlk- Define what is a shit CBM? A lot of people here define a good CBM with its script and nothing more. That's mostly what your basing this on because I even dislike Spider Man 3, but there is a lot in the movie to actually appreciate.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 3/5/2013, 1:41 PM
@MrMxyzptlk

Spidey 3 was part of his contract.
Wez - 3/5/2013, 1:41 PM
Sorry but tobey Maguire was just a Whiney cry baby throughout the trilogy and I've seen rocks that can act better than Franco tho he did redeem himself in rise of the planet of the apes! Don't get me wrong the first two films were great but I thought Andrew garfields peter Parker/ spider-man (bar the suit) was closer to source material where I just wanted maguires version to shut up and quit whining!
fettastic - 3/5/2013, 1:43 PM
NO I do remember a rumor that Felicia was being auditioned for. It was undetermined if she would actually be Black Cat in the film though. And this interview does nothing to clear that up by the way.
HumanTorch83 - 3/5/2013, 1:44 PM
@captainobvious you do know that he was behind the lens while Toby was doing that terrible musical right?
I don't care what he says, SM3 is bad and it was his fault. Once he watched scenes back he should've realized how bad I t was and cut it out.
SotoJuiceMan - 3/5/2013, 1:45 PM
TASM portrayed a whiney Peter too. He whined about his parents who Uncle Ben and Aunt May throughout all the years never talked about. Though this is grounded in reality no mention of them as Peter all of a sudden takes the briefcase in the basement that his father forgot for some odd reason.

(I don't wanna hear this will be explained in the sequel, or listen to the commentary kind of bullshit, that's not what a good movie should be based on)
Wez - 3/5/2013, 1:50 PM
SotoJuiceMan that's true but I never felt the need to slap Garfield anywhere near as much as maguire
SageMode - 3/5/2013, 1:52 PM
Why not get an actress thats actually attractive and has the chops to do the role?
JoeMomma29 - 3/5/2013, 1:53 PM
fettastic - 3/5/2013, 1:55 PM
I also recall Sam really talking up Morbius, so it was speculated he was going to include him too. In fact, the rumor was that Dr. Connors formula would be mixed with bat DNA to create Morbius, and possibly The Lizard as well. A LOT of speculation obviously, but nothing about that project was sounding good at all. And of course Sandman was still out there somewhere.

It was heavily rumored that Sony was just as nervous as everyone else and leaked the Vultress stuff to prove to Raimi was a stupid idea it was. When the results echoed around the web, Raimi acknowledged that he didn't have a viable way forward and bowed out.

That jibes with what Avi Arad said not long ago that Sam didn't have a story he wanted to tell. He had done the origin, Spider-Man No More and Dark Spider-Man and there was just no passion to do anything else.

Of course that doesn't quite line up with what Sam said when he first got the gig. He said he was happy to make Spider-Man films as long as Sony would let him.

We had also heard a rumor that Sony was planning for 6 films in the original run.

So yes, Sam didn't like Venom and frankly was too old-school to figure out how to handle him appropriately. He was a trooper and tried to conform him to his taste, but that just [frick]ed the whole thing up. To his credit I thought he paid off the Harry relationship quite well.

He certainly seemed to have lost his touch for whatever reason and it really was time to turn it over to someone else.
PsyBoy - 3/5/2013, 1:58 PM
Yeah of course now he says that.
BeanzReilly - 3/5/2013, 1:59 PM
I think TASM fanboys wanna keep the vultress rumour alive so they can have reasons to justify their mediocre reboot.
pedroparker - 3/5/2013, 2:02 PM
ANNE HATHAWAY as BLACK CAT, ANNE HATHAWAY as CATWOMAN, ANNE HATHAWAY as WONDER WOMAN, ANNE HATHAWAY as SUPERGIRL, ANNE HATHAWAY for PRESIDENT!!

During this interview finally explains WTF happened on World of Warcraft:

"Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, 'Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture.' So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at [Warcraft developer] Blizzard, and it didn't quite work for me. I told them I wanted to make my own original story with Robert, so we pitched it to Legendary and they accepted it, and then we pitched it to Blizzard, and they had reservations, but they accepted it. Then Robert wrote the screenplay, and only once he was done did we realize that Blizzard had veto power, and we didn't know that. And they had never quite approved the original story we pitched them. Those reservations were their way of saying, 'We don't approve this story, and we want to go a different way,' so after we had spent nine months working on this thing, we basically had to start over. And Robert did start over, but it was taking too long for the people at Blizzard, and their patience ran out. Honestly, I think it was mismanagement on their behalf, not to explain to us that the first story was vetoed long ago. Why did they let us keep working on it? Were they afraid to tell me?"

The amazing spider man was SHIT, would have preferred S4. Hopefully TASM2 will be a solid film.
