We lost a bastard on Sunday, but what a glorious bastard! Merle Dixon went out in a blaze of glory when he went to confront The Governor and his men alone - and probably would have succeeded if it wasn't for a pesky walker getting in on the action. This was followed by his brutal beating and murder at the hands of The Governor, and in a very emotional scene, his zombification and discovery by his brother Daryl. The actor who brought terrible life to Merle, Michale Rooker, was a surprise guest on The Talking Dead afterwards, and thanks to the following transcript from Comicbook.com we can bring you what he had to say in full.

When Hardwick said that Merle became the guy that Daryl hoped he would become at the end, Rooker leaned in and said, “Merle was already that guy.” Rooker added, “You know what. You don’t just become someone new. You know under stresses you do…don’t get me wrong, people do change. But you know that was already inside Merle.”

When asked why Merle let Michonne go in the car, Rooker said, “You know what, I think he got tired of listening to her. She wasn’t needed anymore. I had already figured out I’m going to do this with her or without her, and I didn’t want to listen to her anymore. I’m sorry. Get out of the car, please.”

When asked if Merle went on a suicide mission, Rooker said, “I don’t think it was ever...in my mind it was never a suicide mission. In my mind, it was hitting the beaches. Ok, yeah, granted you may die. But you don’t think of dying. You go and you do your job. My job, plain and simple, I think you already stated it, was to go in, make an entry, take out as many as I possible can and make an exit. Well, you know, the exit thing didn’t happen. Although, I’ve got to tell you, I did make quite an interesting exit, but it wasn’t the one I was thinking of.”

When Hardwick suggested that Daryl stabbed Merle so many times to get back at him for things he had done, Rooker said, “Ah, I think you’re way off base. I don’t think that’s the reason at all. I think you just get into…he was emotional of course he lost it. His brother’s gone. And we have always said to one another, this is not on camera anywhere, but you make that pact, just like we [pointing to The Governor] make that pact as members of Woodbury, you don’t leave anybody alive as a zombie. You’ve got to put them down, plain and simple. That’s the only humane way to do it.”

When asked if Merle’s hart was with the prison, with Woodbury, or just with Daryl, Rooker replied, “Merle’s heart has always been with his brother, and his with mine.”

Awww. Well R.I.P Merle, I think the prison gang are gonna regret not having you to fight alongside em in next week's season finale anyway.

That was an emotional ending. Daryl doesn't even know what Merle did.
TheSuperguy - 3/26/2013, 9:07 PM
I gotta admit, that was a great part not just of the episode, but the whole series. Outstanding couple of scenes.

SmellofDuty - 3/26/2013, 9:22 PM
earzmundo Im betting Andrea will die next episode. Tyreese probably won't I'm hoping that they make him like his comic book counterpart and make him like Ricks second in command/ best friend.
Jaspion - 3/26/2013, 9:24 PM
Better him than Daryl. But definitely a very emotional episode.
You'll be missed big brother.
Jaspion - 3/26/2013, 9:26 PM
I hope Andrea doesn't die, just gets out of there with a big cut in her face.
And I hope Michonne and Rick get what they get in the comic book.
TheSuperguy - 3/26/2013, 9:33 PM
Wondering if they'll adapt Rise of the Governor into a movie?
Webhead007 - 3/26/2013, 9:35 PM
Too bad, I started to like the bastard :(
superherofan21 - 3/26/2013, 9:37 PM
Very emotional ending to the episode. Part of me is hoping that Daryl and the group will find out what Merle did and honor him as a hero.
MidnightMystery - 3/26/2013, 9:55 PM
Did Merle die in the comic? If so, he? I haven't read em yet... :-/
AmazingFantasy - 3/26/2013, 9:55 PM
I hope Governor dies a horrible death.
MidnightMystery - 3/26/2013, 9:55 PM

Please no more spoilers as big as the other day. The people who have seen it can still discuss and those who haven't can visit the site for other news. We can all live together and use this site without massive blowups like we saw on Sunday.

Let's use some common sense here
FancyLemon - 3/26/2013, 10:04 PM
@Midnight Mystery - Merle's not in the comic. Neither is Daryl.
Azazel1 - 3/26/2013, 10:31 PM
This is why this show sucks. They kill off all the good charachters.
Tony93 - 3/26/2013, 10:33 PM
andrea needs to die.. now
Sophisticated - 3/26/2013, 10:40 PM

Ramiel - 3/26/2013, 10:57 PM
RIP Merle. I'm really going to miss that racist bastard.
TimL - 3/27/2013, 12:02 AM
Nice spoiler
Coolwhip - 3/27/2013, 12:11 AM
Thanks for the [frick]ing spoilers, you dumb [foo foo]s. Not everybody watches the show live.
KingEmperor - 3/27/2013, 12:15 AM
@MidnightMystery

Merle and Daryl were not in the comics. They were created exclusively for the show.

ThisIsHeavy - 3/27/2013, 12:28 AM
The wait for Friday is killing me, UK gets Iron Man 3 first, UK has TWD a week later. There's always a consequence...
marchettimarq - 3/27/2013, 12:40 AM
god i hate f@#king spoilers...
MotionPictureFilms - 3/27/2013, 2:55 AM
daryls face when he sees merle was brutal, this and rick finding out about laurie have been the saddest iv seen on tv for a while

SuperSomething616 - 3/27/2013, 5:08 AM
This broke my heart....such a cool but sad ending to Merle...

Really wish they hadnt killed him off but it was a necessary evil with where the story will go...
Facade - 3/27/2013, 5:33 AM
He went out a redeemed man!
ralfinader - 3/27/2013, 5:59 AM

For those bitching about old spoilers: Kristen shot J.R.!

Great episode, and Merle was on his way to becoming a fave charactor. I think Darryl will have no problem figuring out what Merle was up to, he is like a dungeons & dragons ranger. I also hope Andrea gets offed, but not likely, she is the obvious darling of the producers and writers.
kingkrikkit - 3/27/2013, 6:16 AM
Rook seemd like a very odd character to me... most actors distinguish themselves from their character, but Rooker spoke like it was actually him, he even tooka few things said by the host as personal, odd indeed. That being said it was a hell of a way to go out and in the end all it did was piss off Daryl, and thats a bad thing for the governer.
RorMachine - 3/27/2013, 7:09 AM
It's not a spoiler 2 [frick]ing days after it airs folks! Didn't get to see it live? TOUGH SHIT! Maybe don't log on to the sites that cover the show until you do? Common sense indeed.
Bark4Soul - 3/27/2013, 7:18 AM
i admit i had it spoiled for me by coming here, but coming here to me is 2nd nature, while it is my fault for not watching the show, I do think the picture shoulda been something else and maybe read differently...I dunno.
marchettimarq - 3/27/2013, 7:40 AM
@RorMachine - How bout you STFU? 2 days, huh? How bout I am deployed and can't watch the show for another 2 months. I come to this site for comic book news and speculation, NOT f@#king spoilers. There is no statute of limitations for spoilers. Just because you had the privilege of watching the show the night it played doesn't mean that everybody else did - you selfish prick.
stevebrt - 3/27/2013, 8:16 AM
When it comes to spoilers for tv episodes I think you should give a spoiler warning for the first couple of days to a week at most after the episode airs
jp88 - 3/27/2013, 10:42 AM
Daryl already knew what Merl was going to do. once he found Michone and saw that she was free he knew his brother was going on a mission, and he was going to do it alone. Trust Daryl knows his brother, and he knows his bro was only looking out for him.
RorMachine - 3/27/2013, 11:14 AM
marchettimarq, like I said, tough shit! Should we wait until you've seen it? Then it's ok to talk about? You're gonna get spoilers here, deal with it.
TheGreenNinja - 3/27/2013, 2:22 PM
Such a bunch of babies. Spoilers really? How do expect an entertainment site to post anything of interest if they have to mind everyone's TV watching schedule? Has it ever occurred to you to just lay off the net for a while? Trust me you will survive. Sick episode! Loved Merle. Best actor on the show
Smallvilleisgood - 3/27/2013, 3:28 PM
So what Ror is saying is that you must avoid this site if you haven't watched the episode? What about people who came here looking for MOS news or Injustice? Was a massive picture of zombie Merle on main really needed? Or could a pic of Rick been fine, with a title saying discuss last nights ep with a spoiler warning?

Nothing about not different tv schedules.
