Clark Gregg On Coulson's Return In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D

Without giving too much away, the actor discusses Phil Coulson's return from the dead (and yes, he WAS dead!) for the upcoming Marvel tv series, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Check out the video interview with Perri Nemiroff after the jump.

In the following interview, Gregg confirms that the original plan was always to kill off Agent Coulson in The Avengers. He was sad to see the character go, but felt that his death had meaning and was happy with the way he checked out. Because of this he was hesitant at first about bringing Coulson back for the S.H.I.E.L.D tv show, until he talked to Joss Whedon about it and saw how it could make sense. He also talks about how Coulsdon might have changed since his "resurrection", and whether his pals in The Avengers who mourned his passing will be made aware that he's back.

Will you be glad to see Coulson back? Or do you think he was better off left dead? Sound off below.

Just read this on ScreenRant
MrYurMomm - 4/19/2013, 5:42 PM
And you made a spelling error in the title, Coulson... not Coulkson
HunterMan - 4/19/2013, 5:47 PM
Apparently people can escape death now either that his death was staged(highly unlikely) unless he was "inhuman"
CoulsonLives - 4/19/2013, 5:53 PM
(If I ever go to comic con... I want an autograph from Gregg)
In short... I live... Fury Lied...
dbapz - 4/19/2013, 5:57 PM
That Asgardian bastard. LOL
brazilianbatman - 4/19/2013, 6:00 PM
the only characters that need ressuruction are Cyclops, jean grey and professor x. Coulson should stay dead forever, sure we love him but he is not important.
CoulsonLives - 4/19/2013, 6:06 PM
I am living proof... Fury is a liar liar pants on fire...
JatevinM - 4/19/2013, 6:08 PM
I really really can't wait to see how this pans out and to see just how pissed everyone gets at Fury because we all know he lied and did some underhanded shit to pass this off. I'm really really interested to see Stark's reaction because he was the "closest" to Coulson
Gunjin - 4/19/2013, 6:09 PM
Clone.
ComiQue - 4/19/2013, 6:09 PM
How do I get rid of these Spring Board Ads. I really love this site but every time a clip or trailer is released I find myself leaving this site to find a non Pre-Aded Clip/Trailer. Its just faster. Im at the end of my rope.
brazilianbatman - 4/19/2013, 6:10 PM
jatevin@ are you also interested to se that the Avengers assembled because of a fake death??? lame!
omkhan - 4/19/2013, 6:10 PM
Arrow = Best Tv show ever
JatevinM - 4/19/2013, 6:16 PM
brazilianbatman@ Either way it goes they were going to have to come together to kick Loki's ass weather Coulson died or not. Actually them banding together over a fake death presents more opportunities from drama and storytelling so yes I am interested in seeing that. Its happening weather you like it or not so get over it.

"he was hesitant at first about bringing Coulson back for the S.H.I.E.L.D tv show, until he talked to Joss Whedon about it and saw how it could make sense"

that must've ben some sales pitch.. very curious on what this idea is that was so powerful that Gregg changed his mind...

we'll see soon enough i suppose
Hulk2008 - 4/19/2013, 6:30 PM
Why a Black Widow spinoff?? Why not Hawkeye??

I like Hawkeye.
TheBoss117 - 4/19/2013, 6:34 PM
While I perfer they'd keep him dead......awwww what the hell, welcome back Phil!
mctrinket - 4/19/2013, 6:39 PM
Happy he's back. I like him and I like the character. So more is welcomed.
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:41 PM
I can't believe you guys are still persisting with the whole "Fury lied" thing when Whedon already said Coulson really DID die, and he's simply being resurrected. Not that he didn't die. He DID die.
MrMartinMarvel - 4/19/2013, 6:42 PM
Hawkeye spin-off would never work.
Hewillrises0609 - 4/19/2013, 6:42 PM
Marvel is a joke
continuezero - 4/19/2013, 6:43 PM
Wait, so Marvel kills off a character and then brings them back to life and so many of you are shocked?

Come on...
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:43 PM
"Marvel is a joke"

I get what you're trying to accomplish, but don't understand why it's so important to you to do so.
PsyGuy - 4/19/2013, 6:45 PM
Black Widow for sure!

I'd actually really like to see a Black Widow / Hawkeye movie.
CoulsonLives - 4/19/2013, 6:46 PM
LOL The only time Whedon resurrects someone... Everyone goes ape $#!%... XD
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:46 PM
@continuezero

I still maintain that Marvel Studios is not at all the same animal as Marvel Comics.

Comics are like Soap Operas, where you have to constantly be coming up with new stories, new twists, etc, and you have to have so many a year so the writers are going to get way out there as far as plots etc. And every now and then, they resurrect people because they want to get back to status quo.

Movies, as most people are probably aware, are totally different. You don't need to resurrect characters constantly when you're only telling three stories, maybe four. The time to tell a story is far more precious.

So yeah, it's weird to do it. If it works and makes sense, then I'll go with it. I enjoyed the character, and have always been interesting in this show.
himynameisnik - 4/19/2013, 6:48 PM
I'm happy to know he didn't just jump in despite his love for the character. It's good that he put the story first, before his desire to return. A lot of respect for Clark Gregg
JatevinM - 4/19/2013, 6:50 PM
Hulk2008@ Because Black Widow is a really great character and there aren't enough representations of strong females on television especially when it comes to the whole live action comic book adaptations.
continuezero - 4/19/2013, 6:52 PM
@ruadh Hey ya I totally get your point, to kill a character in ongoing comics is basically like taking merchandise off your store shelves and burning it. I get it, just saying that Marvel Characters are so strong that it is tough to kill them off, even in movies. Its so very final and with the creation of a universe you want to include as many as possible.
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:52 PM
@JatevinM

I can get behind that. We just found out yesterday that our new baby on the way is a girl, and of course now I'm thinking about the alternatives to Barbie dolls I can get her into. REALLY wish there was more stuff like Black Widow available for little girls. I guess all I can do is Batgirl and Brave...
thorhulk77 - 4/19/2013, 6:55 PM
@YurMomm

Screenrant sucks man.
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:56 PM
@continuezero

Yeah,that's true...it just really seemed like he completely served his purpose. I enjoyed his scenes more with each film, and Avengers just really felt like the high water mark for the character. I'm really into resolution too. I like stories that have a conclusion, and it felt like Coulson's had a very satisfying one.

On that note, I'm seriously hoping the movie version of Iron Man gets a solid conclusion, with RDJ still in the role. I don't need it to be like James Bond. It's one thing I really appreciate about the Dark Knight movies, and I'm sorry to bring up Nolan in a Marvel article...but I've actually still yet to see DKR. But that it's a finite story is really appealing for someone like me.

So, I'm hoping that with Phase 3, the focus shifts to some of the other heroes you're probably referring to, with the Phase 1 ones dropping back to supporting.
JatevinM - 4/19/2013, 6:57 PM
ruadh@ There is still Black Canary, Wonder Woman, SpiderWoman and many others. She also does not have to only play with female action figures.
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 6:58 PM
@JatevinM,

Of course that's true. And I told my son he's gotta help me out and be ready to share his figures when she's big enough. But also I want to get her a Princess Leia doll, but of course that means she's also gotta have Han Solo...
JatevinM - 4/19/2013, 7:02 PM
ruadh@ and Chewie
thorhulk77 - 4/19/2013, 7:07 PM
@Ror

Found a typo in your atricle. You wrote "Coulsdon". Lml
MrYurMomm - 4/19/2013, 7:27 PM
@Thorhulk

That may be your opinion, but its only just that. An opinion, not fact. You don't like it, but I do. So don't rip on personal preferences.
ruadh - 4/19/2013, 7:27 PM
@JatevinM

And of course the droids. And Luke. And this paddleball game, etc.
thorhulk77 - 4/19/2013, 7:29 PM
@YurMomm

Whoa bro, was only kidding around. Screenrant is one of my mains.
MrYurMomm - 4/19/2013, 7:39 PM
@ Thorhulk

Oh, well then i'm sorry there bud. Honestly, it's hard to tell when someone is joking through text. Whenever I do, I just put a "/s" for sarcasm so people will be able to tell. Otherwise they may mistake for a literal sense, much like I just did. Just a lil heads up I suppose.

What the hell is going on?
