Deadpool Will Break The Fourth Wall In His Solo Movie

At least according to Ryan Reynolds..
So, we know that a "Deadpool" movie is in the works with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role from "X Men Origins: Wolverine". Or maybe that's not exactly accurate, since many fans feel he never actually played the "Merc with a mouth" in that movie at all! Anyway, we have already been assured by Reynolds that his solo movie will be much more faithful to the character from the comics.

When asked about this by Empire magazine today, Reynolds said:

“Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he’s got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall,". And as for his decapitated head at the end of Wolverine, well, “that we won’t speak of."

Ok! As for more updates on the Deadpool spin-off from Reynolds, he adds: “The studio's working on a script and trying to find a director. The main goal is to make sure it stays close to the source material." And as for the fans that felt jilted by Deadpool's first movie appearance.. "I'm one of them. I've always been a fan, at least for the last eight or nine years. I feel a bit of validation because I knew going into Wolverine that there's a huge fanbase for this and I don't think anyone else did."

I have heard enough of Reynolds passion for this character to believe he genuinely wants this movie to be as faithful as possible..unfortunately studios and directors don't always have the same enthusiasm! Lets hope his voice is heard on this.

Update: For reference, breaking the fourth wall essentially means talking to the audience. "The term applies to the boundary between any fictional setting and its audience. When this boundary is 'broken', it is called 'breaking the fourth wall.'" In the comics, Deadpool is often aware that he is a comic book character.

Cool ROR @ Im actually really wanting this movie, just coz i didn't like WOLVIE PANTS, but i hope this DEADPOOL is the real DEADPOOL! ; )
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 9:50 AM
You got me by seconds lee

What's breaking the fourth wall anyway!!! What if there is a fifth wall, or 6th ?
starscream4president - 7/3/2009, 9:51 AM
Seconds... : D

Starscream @ Like the comic book, talking to the reader or should i say audiance if i could spell it lol!
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 9:51 AM
thank god
tyko450 - 7/3/2009, 9:53 AM
its just a shame that all my favorite comics are owned by fox or sony. i love the avengers, don't get me wrong, but i would sell my body for a marvel studios x-men movie!!
CorndogBurglar - 7/3/2009, 9:54 AM
Fox is the definition of Douche!!! They suck
starscream4president - 7/3/2009, 9:55 AM
true dat @CORNDOGBURGLAR.
dellamorte1872 - 7/3/2009, 9:58 AM
yeah, thats why i'm still going to be worried about a deadpool movie until i actually see it and like it. they've pulled the wool over the comic communities eyes many times by making crap movies look awesome in trailers.
CorndogBurglar - 7/3/2009, 9:58 AM
i hope they show how he gets the name "DEADPOOL" THAT WAS THE BEST PART OF HIS ORIGINS STORY. AND THAT'S WHEN HE BREAKS THE 4TH WALL IN THE COMICS. THANKS ROR.
KILOWOGSPOOZERS - 7/3/2009, 10:03 AM
Every one of these fox Movies and actors says "were gonna be true to the source material" and look what happens. Call me skeptical but we'll wait see
superdog - 7/3/2009, 10:07 AM
Im not sure about the whole 'breaking the 4th wall' thing but as long as its not over used it could work nicely!

I think its best just to say that Weapon XI was just a clone or another mutant who coincidentally looked like Wade and coincidentally was called Deadpool, lol!

Still, didnt they promise to be faithful to Deadpool in Wolverine? Look how that turned out! Think ill have to go with 'superdog' on this one and remain skeptical for now...
joshw24 - 7/3/2009, 10:07 AM
personally, i never cared too much for the broken 4th wall. i loved deadpool most when he was in the old school x-force comics a lot. he was a little more like spidey back then, talked a lot of smack, but everyone feared him too...he wasn't looked at as quite the bumbling idiot
CorndogBurglar - 7/3/2009, 10:10 AM
Hey it could be worst, they could stick with the clone Deadpool laserbeam-eyes thingie from WOLVIE PLOPS!

Lol @ Starscream ; )
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 10:12 AM
Hold up guys didnt hugh jackman have this kind of attitude when he was talking about wolverine prior to it being made? and he was a producer on that crock of sheiit!
wards - 7/3/2009, 10:25 AM
i keep my expections low so i'm never disapointed

SHHH - 7/3/2009, 10:29 AM
@ wards

that's why i'm still worried. when its all said and done, what the actor thinks and wants doesn't matter with fox. reynolds even said he wasn't happy with deadpool in BORIGINS, which means he had no say about it when it was time to shoot. and LEEE, hope you don't mind if i hijacked your word, it just fits so well lol
CorndogBurglar - 7/3/2009, 10:29 AM
That's what I'm saying. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear
superdog - 7/3/2009, 10:30 AM
Corndog @ Feel free man! Heh heh ; D
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 10:32 AM
It all depends on if you allow yourself to enjoy these movies or not. If changing things from the comics makes you so mad that you cant enjoy the movie for what it is then be prepared for a life of disappointment! I loved the X movies..well 1 and 2, thought 3 and even Origins were enjoyable. Were they good adaptations? No, but good movies none the less.
Rorschach01 - 7/3/2009, 10:36 AM
There's alot of plagarism on this site corndog so don't worry
superdog - 7/3/2009, 10:38 AM
@Kilo@ They already called him Deadpool in XMO:W Striker says it during his speech to Logan.
Osiris - 7/3/2009, 10:41 AM
I enjoyed all thos movies all well ror, I'm just saying the actors and stuff should stop saying there gonna be true to the material and then not be. Just admit that they are making a
movie based on a comic but not necessarily true to it. It's the lying that losses me off.
superdog - 7/3/2009, 10:41 AM
I figured they would break the forth wall considering the end of Wolverine when Deadpool's head tells us to "Shhh". I feel confident with Deadpool in Reynold's hands. Lets hope Fox dont douche it up.
longbowhunter - 7/3/2009, 10:42 AM
I thought that the first two X films were crap-far too pretentious in trying to get a message across (thanks a bunch Singer!) and the third was just a brainless action film that killed off the franchise. Origins was a decent film if you forgive the major things it changed from the comic book.

Osiris & longbowhunter: as far as im concerned that wasnt Deadpool in Origins! and by the sound of what Reynolds is saying the events of that film wont be mentioned anyway! (thank god!)
joshw24 - 7/3/2009, 10:43 AM
Sweet.

I think the best think to do would be to take his origin from the Deadpool/Death Annual and tie it in with an adaption of the circle chase, but instead of Tollivers will have him be after a mark. You could also tie his origins in with the Sins of the Past miniseries, which had Deadpool team up with Banshee and Siryn to take out Black Tom and Juggernaut. It also introduced the man responsible for giving Deadpool his powers, Dr. Killbrew, who was also a character in Deadpool/Death Annual. The Mithras storyline would be good, but it is too long and complex to sell to an audience unfamiliar with Deadpool.

Supporting Cast: Weasel, ya you got to have him, he could be easily adapted to fit into most of Deadpool's story lines.

Blind Al would be good, but again it depends on the storyline.

Sandi of Deadpool Inc. I think we may be getting ahead of ourselves a bit on her, but she would be good especiallyif they ever go into the Agent X series.

For villains: I think Ajax is need, especially if it is an origins movie, he would be the easiest to translate to film.
I wouldn't mind seeing Garrison Cain i there as a rival merc after the same hit.
Bulleye could have a cameo since he is owned by FOX.
I'd like to see Taskmaster, but his rights are owned by Marvel Studios, so we may get him in an Avengers movie.

Slayback would be cool, but he was never that big of a villain.

T-Ray. Deadpool's arch foe, he would be good, but if they go into the "I'm Wade Wilson!" "No I'm Wade Wilson!" thing, it could get confusing, but I would love to see him in a sequel.

Black Tom and Juggernuts, especially if you are doing a Sins of the Past themed movie, seeing Juggernuts done right would be would cool, because he is the Juggernaut bitch.

Black Swan, cool but again getting to close to Agent X.

Love interests: Vannessa aka Copycat is a must have specially if you are doing Circle Chase or an origins movie.

Theresa Rourke aka Siryn. I'd like to see her in it, even if it is a cameo, but not the little girl from Wolverine 3, I mean X men 3

Bloody Mary is possible especially since FOX owns the rights to the character, but she would have to be introduced in Daredevil first.

Deadpool's(or T-Ray's dead Wife Mercedes(I think) she would be interesting, but would be bette if saved for a sequel.

Let me know what you think

HAWK out
THEHAWK - 7/3/2009, 10:44 AM
I was going to write that up in a Editorial, but I'm leaving for a while and don't have time.
THEHAWK - 7/3/2009, 10:45 AM
I hope with his passion of the character and wanting to stick to the source material, that Reynolds does this justice. My only two fears are: 1) He goes overboard and turns his performance into National Lampoons: Deadpool, 2) Even though he has passion for the source material, the studio execs take their normal route and rape the character and turn it into some sort of Deadpool hybrid crap character like they did in XO:W.
dizzle716 - 7/3/2009, 10:50 AM
The gunslinger/Dark tower series has all kinds of walls that they can break. There is a 4th wall, a 9th wall, a 57th wall, a 354th wall...

There is when you break the 4th wall,, that just means a character communicates to the 'real' audience.

A character can do alot more than just 'communicate' through the 4th wall...One could travel through to this real world, or any other world of fiction.

then not only can you travel from the fictional world to the world...but you can come to this 'real' world in the past, the present or the future. So The gunslinger coul travel to the 60's, the 70's or the 80's or 90's or the wild west or dark ages etc etc etc.
Jojo Risin - 7/3/2009, 10:57 AM
I think that Fox might wise up considering Wolverine Origins hasn't even broken $200 million domestically yet. This one hit them in the wallet so they should learn their lesson.
alten2345 - 7/3/2009, 11:16 AM
screw this film cuz deadpool is a fave of mine...they butcher so many characters and films such as ff4, xmen etc where there is so much stories and source mat'l and it's so hard to fukk the plot up..yet they fukk it up very much...u guys think they aint gonna fukk up d'pool...ryan reynolds is a poser cuz he said the wolvie deadpool wud rock..WTF..dat sucked ballz....u guys are gonna be bloggin and hating in this movie in a 2 years or whatever timing...u guys begged for crap so dont complain when u get it
Anil Rickly - 7/3/2009, 11:21 AM
I hate the whole 'Breaking the 4th Wall" concept. It completely takes you out of the illusion created by a story. This is the only DP characteristic I can't stand. There is nothing clever or unique about it, just an unoriginal attempt to make a character stand out.

Gee, I wonder if Loki will break the 4th wall in Thor. After all, it was Loki who brought Deadpool to the realization that he was a fictional character. C'mon guys, wouldn't that be so awesome if Loki paused the whole movie to look at the screen and utter something mischievous... [frick] no it wouldn't be, and it won't be cool in the DP movie either.
TheMyth - 7/3/2009, 11:25 AM
I agree, it works in the comic..but if Reynolds turns to us in the cinema in the middle of a fight scene and announces he just farted or something im leaving! I wont mind it done 1 or 2 times , like to a video monitor or something, but unless they make it a flat out comedy, breaking that wall will completely take you out of the movie.
Rorschach01 - 7/3/2009, 11:31 AM
Yeah I think vague references to knowing he's Ina movie would be enough. Going all Kuffs on us would be over the top.
superdog - 7/3/2009, 11:37 AM
i just hope Fox dont [frick] this up by changing the costume to show Ryan Reynolds face-Deadpool spends 90% with the mask on but for a movie studio with a big name star in the lead role, they're gonna want to show his face. i can see this going wrong already...
joshw24 - 7/3/2009, 11:47 AM
JOSH @ Its FOX! what do you think? ; )

Well lets hope they prove us wrong...
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 11:49 AM
I have no doubt that Ryan is the right man. And I have no doubt he want's to give us a good movie. But there are two sentences that mean nothing when talking about a film of this genre "We're going to make sure it stays close to the source material", and "This ones going to be darker than the last one". Both are laughable and mean nothing until the film is done.
Howlett04 - 7/3/2009, 12:03 PM
Thank god.
Bandrews1 - 7/3/2009, 12:05 PM
As far as him wearing a mask, somehow they got away with it for Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta. It was a bold move, and it worked.

But that was Warner Brothers. Yeah....
TucsonRican - 7/3/2009, 12:13 PM
So true howlett
superdog - 7/3/2009, 12:17 PM
And with all due respect to Hugo he doesn't have the star power or the pretty face of Reynolds so it was easier
superdog - 7/3/2009, 12:19 PM
oh so hugh jackman wasnt as passionate about his role as wolverine, he worked his ass for both filming it, and promoting it, he even wanted to go to mexico right when the swine flu hit. at the end of the day theres only so much you can do as an actor, perfect example would be christian bale, in TS, he was like a handicap without a good director at his side, its the same guy who resurrected the batman franchise, fox should give the x men franchise to marvel, only then there would be any hope.
realblood33 - 7/3/2009, 12:25 PM
yeah, I'm pretty sure no matter how passionate renolds is we won't see a real deadpool, I mean he said the same thing before wolverine came out, he what a huge fan he was of the source he was and look what we got. Actors have very little say in theses matters.
thwhtGuardian - 7/3/2009, 12:42 PM
Realblood33 @ You are damn right! An i respect HUGH and no one could ever replace him has WOLVERINE ever! Him and SABRETOOTH was the best things in that movie!

About the mask thing ppl! Remember JUDGE DREDD! ; )
LEEE777 - 7/3/2009, 12:42 PM
Don't go there LEEE, it's on my personal top five favorite comic book movies of all times. :P
Shaman - 7/3/2009, 1:14 PM
I'd be very surprised if a Deadpool movie actually gets made. To start, he's not well-known enough (to the general public), and he's not a character that would be easy to translate into live-action. The only way that they would do it, would be to add in some plotline, or failed romance, or something that would just soften the character and piss of any real fans.

hescian - 7/3/2009, 1:48 PM
Seriously shaman?

This guy is the man! He knows the character and is pationate about it he's not in it for the money. They need to get the guys who have written Deadpool before to write the movie.

Superman4
Superman4 - 7/3/2009, 2:38 PM
Makes me wonder what the title of the movie will be, hope it's "Deadpool: The Merc with the mouth." Ryan seems very sincere about this movie, if he stays as true to the movie as he is when talking about it during the process of filming it, it really should be great.

SupermanReturns2 - 7/3/2009, 3:59 PM
@joshw24

i think the breaking the 4th wall thing will work pretty good. i'm sure that's where we'll get most of the comic relief from while the rest of the movie should be all ass kicking. it should sorta be like how zach morris would always narrate and talk to the camera in saved by bell.

and if his costume will look anything like the photoshop pic up there, that's good enough for me cuz that looks sickkk. i'm sure theyll show ryans face alot. i bet he'll always have the mask throughout the movie and have it on when he fights and probably not during the dialogue scenes. then theyll prolly show how his face gets messed up like somewhere in the middle of the movie and then hell have his mask on at all times. i hope lol. thats my opinion.

superdog - 7/3/2009, 4:09 PM
heath ledger hated the joker, and look how that turned out. what matter's is people making a product they can stand behind. was reynold's so hyped to play deadpool, he didn't care how he portrayed it, just as long as he was portraying him in origins. i hope he cleans it up,the fourth wall could be cool, but if it gets overused like bullet time,it'll get lame too fast.

teabag - 7/3/2009, 5:37 PM
reynolds says he's a fan...doubt it..he's a fan after they pitched to him...cuz they raw butchered deadpool in origins...gayyyyy...shame cuz reynolds was ideal for a flash role
Anil Rickly - 7/3/2009, 5:55 PM
Think of the 4th wall in dimensions, we know of 1d, 2d, and 3d. 4d is kinda like separating demensions or universes if you will. The fourth wall is generally found in the presence of a stage or theatre, where theres an imaginary/fictional wall separating the audience from the world that's playing out on the stage. During the performance it never breaks. This would keep the immersion and the reality of the play as you watch it. To sevre that "reality" would be breaking that 4th wall. It can be easy to do, but if it isn't done right it can ruin the rest of the performance.
Hope the clears the 4th wall up a bit.
iNsaneMilesy - 7/3/2009, 6:19 PM
@ GUNSMITH

The whole breaking the 4th wall thing means Deadpool is aware he is a comic book character and is aware of the audience. Kinda like if we could see outside of our 3D selves into another dimension sorta thing.
VenomIsOnMyRibs - 7/3/2009, 6:19 PM
Well iNsaneMilesy actually just explained it a lot better then me so read his.

KEEP THE MASK, COVER HIS BODY WITH HIDEOUS SCARS (WORKED IN SPAWN). THE BAD GUT (UMMM OMEGA RED ANYONE?) OH N DIDNT HAVE A LIL TELEPORTATION DEVICE? DEADPOOL WAS THE ONLY BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO COME OUT OF THE LEIFEILD FIASCO OF THE EARLY 90S. IF MARVEL STUDIOS DOES THIS EXPECT A KICKASS MOVIE
10THTIGER - 7/3/2009, 9:28 PM
hahaha whats the matter myth, you cant see DP and AC Slater fighting over Tiffany Amber Thiessens character. Id like to think DP would win this but i have a strange feeling that the power lurking is Slaters mullet would work much like Doc Sampsons hair.
ThePrince - 7/3/2009, 9:29 PM
@Myth. Let Deadpool himself deal with it.

Found this on the web, excellent pic from Messiah war, which was awesome by the way, did you enjoy it?

THEHAWK - 7/3/2009, 9:33 PM
God I love photoshop!
THEHAWK - 7/3/2009, 9:36 PM
lol, thanks HAWK, I loved Messiah War. Naturally I have that issue and that frame is priceless. Oh, how about the part where he is hitting on Domino. Great shit. I bet Jen liked that part.
TheMyth - 7/3/2009, 9:36 PM
messiah complex was sick...war dragged on too much...needed more apocalypse...archangel was sick...but i luvd x-23's big choice at the end...overall i felt bishop is becoming too redundant "must kill girl"..at least cable #16 shook crap up a bit..needed that!!
Anil Rickly - 7/3/2009, 10:20 PM
@Myth. Man when she is reading X-Force, the house could collapse aound her and she wouldn't know it. But yeah she pretty much loves anything with Domino, and I'm a Cable fan myself so we can find some common ground discussing it. I'm looking forward to the next X-Force myself, I love Clayton Crain's art style on the series, very nice, it helps draw me more into the story.

I laughed so freakin hard when Dom called X 23 "That creepy girl"

And Deadpool's line when Wolverine stabbed him in the head "Logan! I can feel you inside my head! Are you a telapath now?"

SPOILERS

I love Archangel in this, usually I'm not a big fan of him. It was kinda neat Apocalypse said he was proud of Angel. I love when he claimed the girl from Apocalypse, as payment for saving Apocalypse's life.

I'm noticing that Cyclops is becoming more of a douche lately or is it just me? I mean launching X-orce forward in time, without them being ready, was pretty crappy, even for him

Deadpool was awesome. I liked how he hid in a fridge in case the place he was at got nuked, cause he saw Harrison Ford do it, and he ended up there for 1000 years.

Then his confrontation, and destruction at the hands of Stryfe, awesome, very well done, it showed that deep down Deadpool really was a hero and had morals.

I just finished the new Cable issue, sweet!

I was wondering when they would seperate him and the kid, and the part at the end with Bishop, priceless.

Well thats all folks see ya in a week, I take the fatal plunge tomorrow afternoon, then off together to Italy!

HAWK out.
THEHAWK - 7/3/2009, 11:05 PM
what the fuk is up with the dumbass comment. what was so wrong with me saying DP breaking the 4th wall is like how Zach Morris did in saved by the bell? it was just an example to make the concept of it a little clearer to other people. so ease up there buddy, i dont play that. u dont know me and i dont know u so chill with that disrespectful shit and squash it.
HopOff718 - 7/4/2009, 1:55 AM
cable and this whole hope-girl issue dragged and didnt evolve much during messiah war...thank god the story is diverting towards a new direction now....and man how can you guys have faith in reynolds?...ill never forget how he said deadpool was the shit in wolverine...turned out he was just shit!!...fox will butcher d'pool as they usually do our characters...why couldnt marvel pull this character back??...gosh..if they try a gambits origins..then wow..fox will f that up also..marvel should get their characters back...FOX U SHUD BURN IN HELL
Anil Rickly - 7/4/2009, 11:22 AM
Alright. I am a theatre major. I spend a lot of time on the stage people. The "Fourth Wall" is the imaginary wall that LITERALLY separates the performance from the audience. If you look at a normal stage from the audience, there are three walls. The fourth wall is imaginary and it is the wall that starts right there at the end of the stage. When it comes to theatre, when an actor looks directly at the screen or references the audience in ANY way, they are "breaking the fourth wall". The exact same thing goes for movies. Malcolm in the middle does it all the time, it is roughly the same idea that Deadpool has. In the comic world, when a character, such as Deadpool or the Joker, references the audience, or makes a statement that only the audience would understand, it is breaking the fourth wall. One Deadpool comic that i know of has Bullseye walking up to DP and saying something like "Deadpool. deadpool, deadpool, how long has it been?" to which Deadpool responds with (roughly) "Um... Issue 17, Greece". That is a perfect example of DP breaking the fourth wall. That is my definition in utter lamen's terms.

Now. I swear if Fox messes with deadpool, i will get a job there myself just to ensure that they lose the rights to ALL of their Marvel connections.
Jib7z - 7/4/2009, 2:02 PM
Jib7z: i know what the 4th wall is but that is a brilliant definition-i never thought about in the respect that it was a literal wall between the audience and stage, lol!
joshw24 - 7/4/2009, 3:23 PM
Yeah. Like i said joshw24, i'm a theatre major. With any luck, you guys will one day be saying "I know he says he wants to keep true to the comic, but the actors really have no say in the matter". That's kinda my dream. I would KILL to be in a comicbook movie. I wanna play Dick Grayson in a movie version of Nightwing. That would be tops.
Jib7z - 7/4/2009, 9:09 PM
I'm very excited for this movie! Of course he'll break the fourth wall, Deadpool is suppose to.

IF the film can get in a moment like that near the finale i would love to have deadpool/reynolds break the 4th wall with something like " I told you i'd pull it off", et al. for the fans and what not. but if it's gonna be running dialogue, like some govt. suit being a douche and deadpool commenting "this guys a dick" to the audience then scrap it.my problem with films like this are how do you [frick] it up?! you have excellent source material to start with and a fan base. just do the damn thing!
