The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has, predictably, lit a spark under the box office, earning mega-bucks (it's currently sitting on a $276.4M total - just $7M shy of the first movie's lifetime gross!) the world over. The Francis Lawrence directed movie has also gone over very well with critics, currently maintaining an 89% on RT. There are still those that refuse to acknowledge that these movies are anything more than "kiddie Twilight crap" however, and those stats will probably do little to change their opinion on that. But, if you happen to be someone who took a chance on Catching Fire, were you pleasantly surprised? And if you were already a fan, did it disappoint at all? Vote below and have your say in the comments section.

After seeing it felt just like the first one, same format and everything, peasant town, go and do the interviews, go to the training, do the hunger games, they get out. Literally just like the same thing, still enjoyed it however.

Meh, I'll see it on DVD eventually

Anyway, yeah cjspade it actually was pretty similar in overall structure, but there was a LOT more going on with the characters and the actual plot. I also really enjoyed the first one but felt this improved on everything I didn't like about it and then some.

@ALmight

Its CB-related. They sell Hunger Games stuff in comic book stores, its sci-fi. Get over it.

Never saw the first. Was dragged into seeing the second.

Not bad tbh. The fake relationship aspect was grating, but that ending was pretty tense for a pg13.

I'd imagine people who'd seen the first would be more satisfied.

Just saw it last night. I had a lot of problems with the first movie (I'm a fan of the books) and from character development to tone, they had everything wrong in the first movie. They focused more on the games than on the characters therefore there was no emotional attachment which made **spoiler for those who have yet to see** Rue's death lifeless and free of emotion. The shaky cam sucked, the acting was bad, no chemistry between the actors. Everything was bland and the tone was far from the books.

Catching Fire was my favorite book of the trilogy and they perfected it on screen. Every important detail from characters to story was covered, they had character development, nothing was bland or dry, the acting was actually top notch, the film was intense and suspenseful, had emotion, you can understand and see the action, you got a little bit more understanding of Katniss' relationships with Gale and Peeta but because of the first films lack of attention to character and relationship development, we can never understand her relationship in them (I'm not saying EVERYTHING should have been in the movie but, it should have been at least 2 hours and 40 minutes, the first one that is). The movie was just fantastic. Best sequel I've seen since the last five Harry Potter films and by far the best blockbuster of the year. You guys are in for an absolute treat with, Catching Fire.

I'm actually excited for the film franchise now because they got it right the second time around. Woohoo!! Deserves every penny it makes.

Also, we'll never fully understand part of what makes Katniss so tick because they didn't explain (whereas they did in the book, the first one) where her dad is. That I felt was, important.

This is what i am saying. Catching Fire is best action movie of 2013. None of CBM come near Catching Fire

For me, the overall best movie of the year to me is still, Prisoners. Really want to see, 12 Years a Slave though.

Unmissable. Easily the best movie of the year, and I loved Man of Steel. I've said this before, and I'll say it again-if these movies were based on graphic novels instead of regular novels, people on this site would have swooned over the movies. And most of the hate it gets on this site comes from 3 different sources:

1. Marvel/Thor fanboys who are upset that it's kicking Thor's butt and has stolen all of Thor's thunder (pun intended.)
2. Trolls who hate any movie that has a female as the main character which makes lots of money (because that spoils their theory that female-led action movies can't be blockbusters.) You could add to that group all the trolls on here who just seem to hate female characters. (Seriously, it's amazing how much hatred female characters get on this site. I couldn't even begin to count the number of comments deriding characters like Jane Foster and Darcy in Thor, Skye & Simmons in AoS, Wonder Woman even though she doesn't have a movie out yet. All the posts calling for Black Widow to be killed off, the ones that hated Pepper getting into the action in IM 3. About the only female character who hasn't got much hate is Scarlet Witch, but I fully expect that to change after the movie comes out.)
3. Trolls who hate any movie with primarily teenage/young adult characters and even a hint of romance (they all like to compare the Hunger Games movies to the Twilight movies, which is just beyond stupid. The only thing those two sets of movies have in common is being based on novels and having teenage girls as the main characters. Saying they're the same is about like comparing E.T. to Independence Day because both were about aliens.)

@EdgyOutsider, I agree that they should have added some more to the first movie from the book, especially about Katniss's dad, but I still think the movie was excellent. I disagree that Rue's death didn't have any meaning or emotion. Just seeing someone that young forced to take part in and die in the games was very emotional, and showed just how terrible the games are.

Yes...

it was very similar to the first one in plot structure.

At least they expanded the story and the 3rd should be the best.... I hope.

it reminds me of Hangover 1 & 2 were so similar (never saw the 3rd one : )

As for box office, Catching Fire is already #3 in domestic gross for the year, and hasn't even been out a full 2 weeks. It will pass TDW in worlwide box office in another day or two. I think the odds are in its favor (pun intended, lol) that it will pass IM 3 for #1 movie in the U.S. for 2013. Still not sure if it will do well enough overseas to pass Despicable Me 2 for 2nd place or even hit a billion, but I hope it does.

This was great. It really was.
It had the perfect mix of humour, actions, drama and romance.
All in gritty realism and with some excellent parallels to real life politics.

The acting was amazing.
I especially loved Jena Malone as Johanna.

I think it could have a great impact on female driven CBM movies.
It's not a CBM, but it shows that you can have a strong, ass kicking female character with depth as the lead in a movie.

Jena Malone's side boob is my favorite part of the movie ^_^ god damn she's so hot. In all seriousness though, the pivotal scene involving Gale is my favorite part just like in the book. Did I mention Jena Malone's side boob? Sorry :) she's just so [frick]ing hot and her as Johanna was amazing casting and really helped make the movie.

I saw it today and I found it amazing. Way better than all of the cbms this year! Amazing performances and the adaptation was really close to the book. I liked it more than the first one. Can't wait for Mockingjay!

Top five movies of the year (that I've seen, don't expect to see Gravity on any 2013 list of mine at all cause I won't see it)

1: Prisoners
2: 42
3: Catching Fire
4: Now You See Me
5: Thor: The Dark World

It was better than the first but the first hour was a drag. Could have been 20 minutes shorter. The elevator scene was woefully inappropriate humor. Woody Harrelson did a great job. Also, be careful how you critique this film (unless you just say something like "shit movie" then you deserve it). There are 4-5 fans of the series who will jump on you about your maturity level or your immature love of superheroes or comic book movies.
