MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Director Shortlist Revealed

It's a very short..shortlist, but apparently either Mike Cahill (Another Earth) or Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) will direct the live action adaptation of the classic animated series, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe.

When Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) dropped out of directing Columbia’s live-action reboot of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, names such as Joe Cornish, Rian Johnson, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller were rumored as possible replacements. But it seems none of those guys made the shortlist, as the following gentlemen are said to be in line to helm the project.

There's not much to go on yet, but here's the Tweet from Variety's Justin Kroll

Apparently we'll have a decision next week. Cahill directed the pretty great 2011 sci-fi drama Another Earth, as well as another sci-fi flick which received slightly mixed reviews from this year's Sundance Film Festival, I, Origins. Jeff Wadlow of course directed Kick-Ass 2 and was in line to helm Fox's X-Force movie. If he gets this gig will it interfere with that? One would think so. Anyway, who do you think the right man to bring Skeletor, Ram-Man, Fisto and co. to the big screen is? The Lone Ranger writer Terry Rossio penned the most recent draft of the script, which is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch.

UPDATE: The Wrap have added Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid reboot) and Chris McKay (editor on The Lego Movie) to that list.

They're really gonna make this film?
Ocelot - 2/26/2014, 3:02 PM
Wasn't John Chu meant to be directing this?
MrNiklander - 2/26/2014, 3:03 PM
He dropped out
MrNiklander - 2/26/2014, 3:03 PM

Pasto - 2/26/2014, 3:03 PM

A MOTU movie could be so awesome if done right. I hope it happens.
npamusic - 2/26/2014, 3:20 PM
seeing as how Jeff is in the process of adapting X-Force.. idk..
CherryBomb - 2/26/2014, 3:36 PM
Another Earth was a beautiful, well directed movie.
CommanderShepard - 2/26/2014, 3:38 PM
I grew up on He Man cartoons, so I love the franchise. I would love a great He Man movie! Heck, I even love the Dolph Lungren hot mess of a He Man movie!
SuperCat - 2/26/2014, 3:40 PM
Too bad Chu isn't directing. He could have f@cked this up like he did with "G.I. Joe: Regurgitation."
JoeMomma29 - 2/26/2014, 3:41 PM
Please make this happen, Masters of Universe has so much potential and could be amazing.

Some day I will also get to see this on the big screen some day.

Pedrito - 2/26/2014, 3:42 PM
Nuts!
Masters of the Universe and Thundercats are two totally awesome concepts that I just do not see translating well to live action. At all.
sameoldthing - 2/26/2014, 3:44 PM
Hope they don't make it too PG.
It should be a cool blend of brutal barbarism, advanced science & twisted sorcery.
Keep the costumes very close to the original characters.

Dude, he-man peed on your rug, dude.

He-Man peed on my rug?! F 'n A!!
manofsteel1942 - 2/26/2014, 3:52 PM
What...??? No Christopher Nolan...??
JoeMomma29 - 2/26/2014, 3:54 PM
@ Pedrito

You are nut my friend, these could make great franchise movies and yes they can be put on the big screen. Heck if Harry Potter, Transformers, and TMNT can do it then Masters of the Universe and Thundercats can do the same.
Pedrito - 2/26/2014, 4:08 PM
@JoeMa
I want to believe, buddy! But I just don't know. Time will tell. Focken Panthro driving the Thundertank and He-man riding Battlecat. Boss.
InfiniteMonkey - 2/26/2014, 4:28 PM
SilverHawks!!

Get that done!
Danbojohnj - 2/26/2014, 4:30 PM
Really hope they do this right this time.
NicolausCopernicus - 2/26/2014, 4:32 PM
liam hemsworth would be ok for he-man
MightyZeus - 2/26/2014, 4:55 PM
The studio is really trying to get a Masters of the Universe film made.
NicolausCopernicus - 2/26/2014, 4:58 PM
@JoeMomma29

SaxoWolf - 2/26/2014, 5:11 PM
marvel72 - 2/26/2014, 5:22 PM
another earth was awesome.
GammerDad - 2/26/2014, 5:27 PM
I know this will end up being a PG13, but damn I'd love to see this done really really dark and violent. CGI Battle-Cat & Panthor big picture feel but it will just end up being a toy selling movie.
Rulk - 2/26/2014, 5:31 PM
Bring it!!!!

I'm glad Chu is not on the list. He would ruin it. I like Wadlow but I'd rather see him do X-Force.
superbatspiderman - 2/26/2014, 7:23 PM
Liam Hemsworth should play as Prince Adam and Chris Hemsworth should play as He Man.
Optimus83 - 2/26/2014, 7:45 PM
Cool. ...MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
ComicsBornAndBred - 2/26/2014, 7:53 PM
Wadlow is shit pleaaaaaase pick Cahill. Another Earth was a piece of cinematic genius. Cahill is an actual director. Wadlow directed a film where a girl puked and shitted at the same time ....😑
LoudLon - 2/26/2014, 7:58 PM
"Classic," he says. I was 10 when the He-Man toys first came out (I still remember losing my shit when my mom finally brought me home a Ram-Man -- the local stores in my town were sold out of that figure almost instantly and I had to wait a LOOOOOONG time before they restocked).

At any rat, now I'm 42. And nothing makes me feel my age like someone referring to something from my youth as "classic."

[frick], I'm old...
Panoramacon - 2/26/2014, 8:37 PM
If they base it off the cartoon then it it's making a big mistake right from the start. Stick with the power sword story from the comics that came with the figures.
mgeoff88 - 2/26/2014, 8:40 PM
I would rather see a Thundercats movie or a Biker Mice from Mars movie.

Jonny Quest would be cool too.
A2ron - 2/26/2014, 8:42 PM
I just hope they get someone hot to play the sorceress.
SugarYumYum - 2/26/2014, 9:15 PM
Not a fan, but I would actually like to see this in live action. It could either be good or so bad that it's good. I can see it generating the slew of commonly used memes as well.
loki668 - 2/26/2014, 10:55 PM
Oh, I can see this film changing careers.

"By the power of Grayskull! I'm going to kill my agent!!!"

On another note, this could be another chance for Kellan Lutz to show his acting chops.
nowtheresaBATman - 2/26/2014, 11:30 PM
^Kellan Lutz for He-Man would be perfect.

Eternia, if done right, like Krypton in MOS, would be AWESOME.

@RULK
You forgot Dave's Evil Lyn - smoking hot!

@mgeoff88
You might as well of thrown in Power Rangers w/ what you'd rather see. I feel sorry for kids who grew up in the 90's. If you were born in 78 instead of 88(I assume) Trust me you'd have better taste.
nowtheresaBATman - 2/26/2014, 11:42 PM
MOTU comics are where it's at. Does He-Man look silly when it comes to the 80's cartoon, toys & that rubbish '87 movie? Yes. In the MOTU comics? No. He's a badass cross between Thor & Conan. If a movie was done along the lines of the Thor movies, or MOS it would be Epic.
When you've actually read a MOTU comic, feel free to leave an enlightened comment.
