BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: TWS Opens Huge After Thursday Night Showings

Marvel's Captain America sequel took in a massive $10.2M from last night's screenings, beating Thor: The Dark World's opening figures, and may well be on track to scoring the top April opening of all time. More after the jump.

'Captain America' Opens Massively with $10.2

As I've said before, it'd really only be news if a Marvel movie didn't make a big splash at the BO, but they've outdone themselves this time. Captain America: The Winter Soldier made a very impressive $10.2 million last night from early screenings (Note: Not just midnights). This puts the Marvel sequel on track to scoring the top April opening of all time -- with a possibility that it may even approach $100 million. It also beat the last Marvel flick, Thor: The Dark World, which took in $7.1 million in Thursday night grosses, as well as the likes of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ($8.8M) and Divergent ($4.9M). Does this mean Captain America 3 could be considered a real threat to Warner Bros. Man Of Steel sequel? You'd have to think so!

dougieisrollingthejays - 4/4/2014, 8:37 AM
Thor TDW made 7 million on thursday, and MoS made 9 million thursday.
dopemaster - 4/4/2014, 8:38 AM
ads on this site are getting outrageous.
dougieisrollingthejays - 4/4/2014, 8:38 AM
looks like it could push 110 million if the thursday night openings mean anythning. thats about what MoS made.
GizmoEl - 4/4/2014, 8:38 AM
At the risk of continuing a Marvel/DC flame war.. It's worth noting this is an April release. A spring movie beating out a summer blockbuster is interesting.
MrCBM56 - 4/4/2014, 8:41 AM
Deserves it. Amazing film.
Pasto - 4/4/2014, 8:42 AM

WOW this is really a great movie guys. !!
Lozzy - 4/4/2014, 8:48 AM
This movie deserves every cent it gets. Truly amazing and raises the bar for CBMs.
MrMartinMarvel - 4/4/2014, 8:49 AM
I'm proud to say that they'll be getting my money this weekend.
batman1216 - 4/4/2014, 8:51 AM
I will be going in IMAX in 3 hours. Very excited.
ALegendaryPanda - 4/4/2014, 8:52 AM
Yeah to put it simply, this movie is [frick]ing amazing! 10/10 and probably my favorite Marvel film yet.
SpiderFraud - 4/4/2014, 8:53 AM
The wait is freaking killing me! I have little patience.
LMB10 - 4/4/2014, 8:54 AM
This is the one Marvel movie that REALLY deserves a billion. It is absolutely fantastic.

Glad it's opened well.
Bekss - 4/4/2014, 8:54 AM
At the risk of continuing the flame war...
Let's remember this is Captain América, not a big name 3 years ago. Let's ask ourselves how much money would make a Martian Manhunter movie, or an Aquaman movie.
I'm saying this because the only reference with DC we have is Batman and Superman. I think that's not fair. ;)
0megaDaGod - 4/4/2014, 8:55 AM
I'm rarely one to say "This movie deserves to make a billion" simply because I think it's messed up to claim that only a person who made something I like deserves to be paid for it handsomely

But good lord does this movie deserve this. Not just because I loved it, but because I want every studio making ACTION movies, not just CBMs, to realize how high the bar needs to be raised.

This shit was a triumph
Pigdango - 4/4/2014, 8:56 AM
Just to clarify, Man of Steel made $21 million from Thursday 8pm shows plus Midnight shows. The reason Man of Steel's $12 million Thursday doesn't "count" and Cap 2's does is that Wal-Mart advertised Man of Steel's Thursday shows heavily, while Cap has only ever been advertised as opening today. But if you're comparing like and like, Man of Steel crushed Cap 2.
HugoStrange87 - 4/4/2014, 8:56 AM
I never can see movies that I want to see right away anymore. A casualty of getting older I suppose. Can't see this till Wednesday. Dammit.
JoJo1982 - 4/4/2014, 8:57 AM
To me, unlike IM3..... cap TWS deserves a billion in box office
Bekss - 4/4/2014, 8:57 AM
Wow, I had not read the comments, it seems there is no flame war.
ALegendaryPanda - 4/4/2014, 8:57 AM
My god the action in this movie was so [frick]ing awesome and intense! That first fight between Cap and The Winter Soldier, lawd!!
m0th3r - 4/4/2014, 8:58 AM
@Pig also a summer release..both my kids wanted to see midnight showing but school ruins everything...that could nearly double the number of butts in seats
m0th3r - 4/4/2014, 8:58 AM
Marvels first TWO Billion dollar year?
circuitbreaker - 4/4/2014, 8:58 AM
Man Of Steel made $21 million on Thursday. $9 million was from the midnight showings only. http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2013/06/14/thursday-box-office-man-of-steel-grosses-21-million/
third3ye - 4/4/2014, 8:59 AM
$100M baby, here we go!
Pigdango - 4/4/2014, 9:00 AM
Here's a link to back up what I'm saying.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3692&p=.htm

"Friday AM Update: Before regular Friday shows even begin, Man of Steel has already taken in an estimated $21 million. It earned $12 million from Thursday night's Wal-Mart screening program, and an additional $9 million from general midnight shows."
JoJo1982 - 4/4/2014, 9:00 AM
@omega

Not just that but also to show Marvel studios that wow ppl love these movies
We should make even bigger movies and make more movies each year
rockerdude22 - 4/4/2014, 9:00 AM
The movie was great! Beats out IM1 as my favorite MCU solo flick!

Interesting story: they stopped the movie at one point because somebody's car caught on fire in the parking lot. It didn't belong to anyone in our theater, so they continued the movie then. A guy behind me shouted "this movie just keeps getting better" when that happened
write33 - 4/4/2014, 9:00 AM
Saw the double feature with Cap 1 at AMC.......great time and loved the movie!!!
Pigdango - 4/4/2014, 9:01 AM
In fairness to whoever created the article here, The Hollywood Reporter actually reported this incorrectly as well.
ukboy28 - 4/4/2014, 9:01 AM
Fully frigging deserved, what a brillant action cbm!!!!

@ALegendarypanda

i know right, one of my fave action scenes in the marvel universe :)
Lawliet - 4/4/2014, 9:01 AM
I just saw it! This is the real phase 2 deserves! unlike the comedic dumb childish disappointing IM3 and Thor 2
Pasto - 4/4/2014, 9:02 AM
Captain America: The Winter Soldier deserve more money than Iron Man 3. This film is easily Marvel's darkest movie to date.
McNyagano - 4/4/2014, 9:02 AM
Well deserved!
JoJo1982 - 4/4/2014, 9:02 AM
@m0th3r

They had a lot of 7pm and 8pm showings last night

That's how my little girl was able to watch it
