Ror Revisits: Elektra Ror Revisits: Elektra

Continuing with the more maligned batch of CBMs out there we have the 2005 Daredevil spinoff featuring the ruthless sai wielding assasin. Is Elektra as bad as you remember? Click for my take..

I said I was going to wade through the crap and dammit I'm a man of my word! After Catwoman I decided to to keep it female and go back and check out 2005's Elektra starring Jennifer Garner.

As I'm sure you all know Elektra was a spinoff from Daredevil in which Garner also played the titular femme fatale. The thing is, I actually liked Daredevil and really liked the Director's Cut. I also thought that Garner did a pretty decent job playing Elektra even if she wasn't quite the ruthless assassin from the comics. So when I heard a spinoff was in the works focusing on the character I was cautiously optimistic. Then director Rob Bowman(X-Files: Fight The Future, Reign Of Fire) was hired. Ok, I never hated his previous movies, lets see what he can bring. Unfortunately he and Fox brought a toned down shadow of one of the most interesting and enigmatic female characters in the Marvel universe.

Now I'm not all about being faithful to the comics as I'm sure you guys are aware. I'm even willing to accept huge changes once they make sense to the story that the movie is telling and they do a good job with it(X-Men: First Class etc), but Elektra is just plain boring! Had they chosen to follow, even remotely, Frank Miller's Elektra Assassin or taken some influence for the essence of the character things may have been different but as it stands the movie version of Elektra is just toothless. Think The Bride from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies as an example of the type of character we SHOULD have had. However Garner once again does her best with the material. She may not be able to convey the cold bloodedness needed but I think in a different Elektra movie with a better story she might have pulled it off. She also looks damn good and we get to see a slightly more family friendly version of the classic red costume from the comics. Other positives? Terence Stamp is pretty good as Stick although he has nowhere near enough screentime. The movie also looks very nice at times and their is good fight choreography for the most part. But we get bogged down in such a formulaic, cliched story with Elektra protecting some kid and her father that it's impossible to care about anything when the sai and swords are clashing. The rest of the performances also range from meh to wretched. The dialog isn't particularly eye rolling stuff but it's never anything but mediocre, uninteresting droning either. The villains are a mass of mute, cgi'd henchmen led by Will Yun Lee stinking up the screen. And whoever chose the soundtrack should be publicly flogged.

Elektra isn't really a terrible movie, there are worse out there. It's just so unremarkable that it makes little difference, and any positives you might take away from it are overshadowed. For the last half hour I found it hard to keep from nodding off. Both Garner and the character deserve a lot better.

I actually really liked Elektra but I never read any of the Daredevil or Elektra comics before I saw it. I agree that the movie has too much romance and that the other characters are forgettable. As much as love Alias and Jennifer Garner, Jolene Blalock was on the short list for the Elektra role originally and should have been cast for the Daredevil movie.

Good review, this movie was pretty damn terrible as a whole.

I still cannot fathom why anyone thinks Daredevil can even be considered decent, that movie was just as bad as Elektra, including the director's cut, which I didn't find all too different except for a couple F bombs. I know they added some material but I couldn't tell because it was a while since I've seen the theatrical release.

The directing was crap, editing was fine, CGI was used poorly, should have stuck with more piratical effects. Fight choreographs were like something out of "Step Up" and the acting...completely groan worthy. The most decent roll was Bullseye, the rest of the cast pretty much blew donkey balls.

Someone paid millions to have this movie made. That's called insanity.

Completely agree Ror, I enjoyed Daredevil and I fought Garner had the look of Elektra and the acting chops to pull it off I just think they needed a much better story. I still like Elektra, and like you said its not the worst cbm, but i just hope with the daredevil reboot or whatever Elektra appears in next that it is worth the character.

I agree. Daredevil director's cut was pretty good. This was just boring. It is on the same page as Van Helsing, I just can't sit through it and fall asleep everytime.

The Director's cut of Daredevil made the movie much better (still think that scene at the playground should have been completely omitted). I still enjoyed it and I think it was much better than X-Men 3.

I liked this movie,
I don't know much about the comic character, but I was mildly entertained. (:

Natassia Malthe was my favourite part! they should reboot 'Typhoid Mary' to be more like the movie version!

I dont think words can express how much I dislike this film. Not my words anyway. I'll wait for Grif to write something, which I'm sure will reflect my own thoughts in a very elaborate, eloquent fashion.

I'll go ahead and be honest - I've never seen this or Daredevil. IDK if I'm planning on seeing them anyway (except I may see the Daredevil extended cut).

Honestly, I really liked Daredevil when I was a kid. And I still don't think it's as bad as everyone says it is. But I do remember seeing Elektra in theaters and HATING it because there was not a single mention of her one true love, Daredevil. Hell, it didn't even feel canon to the movie Daredevil.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 8/11/2011, 10:44 AM
PaulRom, I wouldn't waste the time if you haven't seen them, you're not missing anything.

Pendaghas, what the hell does Conan have anything to do with any comment or this article? Go back up to my previous comment if you want to know why people "slate" Daredevil.

I liked DD iin the theatre. I really liked the Directors Cut. But Elektra sucks. It is definitely one of my if not THE least favorte CBM ever. I mean I really dislike it.
@ROR- The comparison to Beatrix Kiddo (The Bride) was oerfect and that should've been exactly what we got. Ah well.

Yeah, the whole plotline with the little girl and her dad just killed the whole movie.

The wolf/tattoo guy was kinda cool, but overall the movie was just BAD.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller need to team up again and make awesome Daredevil and Elektra movies.

DareDevil (director's cut) is one of my favorite CBMs I never saw the theatrical release of Elektra I did buy the director's cut and I think that movie is alright. The movie had really no strong ties to DareDevil which kinda sucked for me. The fights were pretty cool my favorite part was when Elektra just straight breaks the one guy's neck lol. I don't know it's not the worst one I've seen

I gotta say ROR I really enjoyed the Director's Cut of Daredevil as well. Was it amazing? No but it was enjoyable. I found the director's cut to be more cohesive a film. As for Elektra...I haven't watched it in forever but I think I fell asleep.

@PaulRom Daredevil's worth a watch. Not an amazing movie, but quite entertaining and enjoyable. Needs a reboot, sure, but still not as bad as Ang Lee's Hulk or the F4 films, or even X-Men The Last Stand IMO.
But dont watch Elektra. It's attrocious. One of the 3 worst films I've ever seen.
Ghostt
Ghostt - 8/11/2011, 6:59 PM
Wow, Daredevil fans coming out of the woodwork. Elektra was a better movie than Daredevil, that's how bad Daredevil was. There was no playground scene.

@Ghostt regular DD I agree, but DD Director's cut is a different story. There's a reason many people say that version should have been the theatrical cut cause it was far superior and a good film.
